Here is a friendly FAQ for people who might be wondering about this series.
Q: What’s with the film grain on the episode footage?
A: It’s to alter the footage to help avoid getting flagged by RUclips’s copyright system.
Q: Why isn’t anyone else in this series?
A: Many of the core members of the abridged series live in other countries or states as well as being very busy with their own schedules and projects. They don’t feel doing these over Zoom/Discord would allow them to do the format they’re looking for.
Q: Why isn’t this on the main channel?
A: There are several answers to this one.
It’s the kind of content this channel is used for. Like all their other review or podcast format content.
RUclips’s algorithm can be punishing if you post too many different types of content to your channel. So, it’s in their best interest to keep non-scripted content on one channel and scripted (HFIL, X in X minutes, Unabridged) on another.
As this is a weekly series, they most likely don’t want to flood the channel burying more important series like HFIL on the main channel.
It’s probably safer to avoid putting videos that contain footage from DBZ on the main channel even if altered.
Q: Will they announce season four once this is done?
A: No!
I like to think the fans that don’t ask for season 4 are the real ones!

Yeah honestly while there is a part of me that wants a season 4, deep down i know it'll never happen and i am a ok with that. It ended on probably the best ending ever.
I've made peace with S4.
They've explained why so much and seeing the same patterns that affected them affecting others and causing undue stress on RUclips just adds to my comfort with no S4.
We're getting good content anyway, and the team seems happier. It was a rough time for many, but it's been years at this point.
I've had my time to get over the free Internet content that no one owes me.
I do sometimes dream that the stars will align and S4 will happen one day but I've made my peace with DBZA ending at the Cell Saga.
I was in college when the second season was premiering. The amount of times someone in our house would wake people up in the morning by announcing "MAKIN' TOAST!... *toaster dings* BUTTERIN' TOAST!" always got at least a chuckle.

The Omni King is Popo’s kid, this is canon and you can’t change my mind.
It is my personal headcanon that Popo is enjoying his retirement on earth after handing over the family business to same of the kids he hand across the multiverse. One of the cat brothers got the local district.

I just imagine like a crossover with the abridged series and the main series. Abridged Popo makes the Omni king mad so the Omni king tries to erase him, it seems to work, then Popo appears behind the Omni King and says “you thought bitch” and just slaps the Omni king into non existence.

He does go "Now inject this man with some science!" and then follows up with: "delicious, magical science!" The joke being that he's saying magical even though he just claimed he doesn't believe in ghosts, which is honestly the funniest part to me.
It ties into Yajirobi throwing Goku a Senzu, and Goku says, "Sweet, sciency magic!"
Scientists believe in science because it is magical, magicians believe in Magic, "because science".
EDIT-So funny because everyone accepts Senzu, and prefers them to Healing Pids.
4:27 Seeing as Goku got significantly more childish and dumber from Season 1 to 2, I'm citing the brain damage as the in-universe reason why that happened.

that said his anime fear of needles always meant a lot to me as someone terrified of them myself. growing up and seeing the almighty Goku himself also being scared of them made me not feel so bad about my phobia.

I always figured the Popo joke was because of his introduction back in Dragon Ball. Goku has just defeated the would-be world conqueror Demon King Piccolo and climbs to the heavens to train with Kami only for this strange genie man to hand him his ass.

I actually love Bulma’s character in abridged. Her voice actress absolutely kills it every time, I wish we more people appreciated that too!
Eh. Can't say I liked Bulma. But the cast did a fantastic job and only got better voicing the characters as time went on.
By season 3 her bulma voice is basically flawless.
Honestly the VA for abridged Bulma is infinitely better than rials Bulma in the actual dub of dragon ball

I just caught one the other day I hadn't caught for over a decade. In the Cell saga when he's destroying Nicky Town there is a restaurant called L'Anus Serré which means The Tight Anus. Even better this is the same restaurant Krillin takes 18 to in the DragonShortZ Ep 3. In that he also mentions that he had the reservation for years which means this is the restaurant Marron made the reservations to before she got him for insurance fraud. They truly blow my mind with their attention to detail.

8:23 "Oh hey, it's raining" was so wholesome and sweet. And so freaking relatable. I live ina really dry state, and for me it's more of a "is it raining???" but that part made me smile.
The reason you cared is WHY DBZA is something I watch and rewatch it every time I meet someone who hasn't seen it. You are so far beyond the best dubbing. You guys raised the bar so much in terms of writing comedy with heart, that I just can't go back to original DBZ.
Writing that can make you laugh while making you emotional is SO HARD TO DO and you have my eternal gratitude and respect for making our lives a little bit brighter with what you did.

It's interesting that this comment would actually make them sad, as they really dislike people saying their show is better or a replacement for the original show. Kaiser in particular has said it makes him uncomfortable and defensive. I'm with them in that it isn't better than the original show - but there's obviously nothing wrong with having that opinion, it's totally fine to like DBZA more. I just don't think they'd appreciate it being said that way as much as you intended.
@@shadowflame68 good to know. glad you understood my intention. I loved DBZ as a kid, but I couldn't go back to it as an adult, but DBZA makes me feel what I felt as a kid every time. It makes sense they would feel uncomfortable with the comparison, as they are riding on the shoulders of the work of the originals, but they nevertheless reached for something that others couldn't, and added something very special to the universe and fandom that wasn't there before.
People who resent others for trying to improve are miserable, bitter failures and shouldn't be taken seriously about anything.

See, I kinda go the opposite way. I think season 2 was peak. I like DBZA first and foremost for the lolz. TFS are such great comedic writers when they let themselves be. I respect the change in focus with season 3, but didn't like it as much because it simply wasn't what I enjoyed most about it.

I always attribute Popo to magic, because as we discover with Buu and Moro, magic is a huge force in Dragonball.
True, but I think one of the main problems with Dragon Ball is that, when it comes to characters who use magic, they are either killed off immediately (Babidi) or they completely abandon the magic concept and go for the raw strength (Moro).
Or Baba from DragonBall (Who is Roshi's Sister!)
How about the Dragon Balls which are also magic?

idk if it was translation or filler, but im pretty sure i remember popo was supposed to be an embodiment of "earth." like hes the earth's spirit
so in my mind it makes sense he gets powerful moments, as the people living on earth are more powerful now (goten and trunks and goku)
About the people saying you guys take abridging too seriously. Honestly, I like your guys' more serious method of abridging with some jokes here and there more than the whole just joking around every scene. It feels more real and passionate than just making fun of the original. Your Hellsing Ultimate Abridged series was, in my opinion, a perfect blend of jokes and seriousness.
I enjoy the gag oriented shit but I think 2.9 checked that box better than their first season
I'm glad y'all tried harder. Season 3 especially was something special. It was easy to tell there was a shift in the writing, and it was for the better. It allowed for more serious moments, and you could really connect with the characters.
Just realized this, but, Popo was that "another visitor" the doctor mentioned.
Meaning that he went to the first floor reception, told the guy he was here to see Goku, probably followed the doctor to the room, left immediately after he opened the door, flew outside of Goku's window, just to say "not all of them" at that exact moment.
I did like the self-insert Kaiser joke at the end, it still holds up well as a gag and made me laugh waaay too hard the first time I saw it. Thanks for doing this guys.

I ADORE the little shot of 1st form Freiza at the very end of the season 2 intro. The fact that Garlic Jr., Imperfect Cell and Perfect Cell have the same thing in their intros is great. Super underrated part of the series in general. It really sells the looming threat of the season, especially with the all-white eyes.
Odd thought, but that shot (which may be the same as in Bardock's vision) doesn't actually happen, since Goku met Frieza in his fourth form.

The shot I was referring to was when he’s got all white in his eyes and it appears just before the logo and the shot of SSJ1 Goku.
Kaiser's scream as eldritch demon Popo comes for him is my favourite joke in these early episodes.
Who the hell said DBZA was just another dub for the show? To me, it is an enhancement: a light and hilarious version for older audiences that would absolutely never have the time to watch the entirety of DBZ. Just look at Blind Wave and how two of its members were introduced to Dragon Ball through TFS
TFS is like the Crowbar Collective- they remade an IP that they have a deep and abiding love for with the benefit of hindsight and advances in technology- and the second halves of what they adapted are superior to the originals in almost every way.
Hell, both of them even revitalized their respective media communities- DB Super would not have reached this level of success in the West if it weren’t for TFS building hype
@@ianmason96 I sorta disagree here. the TFS fanbase is a drop in the water compared to the larger dragonball fanbase. not saying it isn't impactful on the youtube space but to say its one of the main reasons super is popular is a huge overstatement

@@spiro3142 I would kinda disagree with both of you. I don't have time to go back and watch even Kai, let alone original Z (though I have supported the official release with home media purchases), but I will go back and rewatch Abdridged. So, for me, it has become a substitute.
I also think it's simplistic to say TFS was reponsible for DBS's success in the west. I think the fairest comment would be that, during the great Dragon Ball content drought until Kai came out that TFS was carrying the lone, dim, torch for the franchise in the west. What difference that made will always be impossible to guage.
Back in high school, that "Making Toast" was on everyone's phones as a notification. You could be walking down the hallway and just randomly hear "Ding, Butter and Toast." Its crazy to think just how much TFS seemed to permeate the culture at my high school. DBZ stuff was suddenly everywhere, just as they were entering the Namak sage. Its like they hit their stride and everyone agreed they were the next big thing suddenly. This would continue well into college. I will die on the hill that they were one of the main reasons Dragon Ball remained in the public consciousness well after the Dub ended.
Bulma is a world class scientist! She should have been going mad with how much stuff there is to study about Namek!
Maybe but she was more of a scientist of technology rather than biology. I know some people that are completely into one but couldn't be bothered too much about the other.
One of the best things that super actually did is make Bulma an actual character again.

Just because they are involved doesn’t mean they should be. she doesn’t develop meaningfully at all in super. Dragon ball super in general is just terrible from a writing perspective.

I was so pissed off at the Fake Namek saga when i originally watched DBZ, but this is one of my favourite episodes of Abridged. Just everything about the Fake Namekians 😂
DBZA is one of the formative shows in my life. I was sad that you decided to end where you did, but I'm incredibly happy that it ended on a high note. I vaguely remember there have been shows that I eventually stopped watching because it began to suck... but because this one ended on a good note, I remember it well.
I don't think Lanipator gets enough credit for his hair. That con clip of his short hair is what I grew up with, to me being surprised by his covid afro but digging it, to him killing the long hair. Sweet hair my guy.

It's still amazing to see people starting reactions to DBZA. Like if you search it now you'll see a bunch of people who haven't made it to episode 10, others near episode 30, some near episode 60 and a bunch reacting to HFIL.

The Qui & Vegeta scene is one of my favorites… when Qui tells him the scouter was on the entire time… Vegeta’s sudden realization & Lanipator’s performance on the “GODDAMMIT NAPPA” gives me chills every time. It’s as if I could actually hear Vegeta’s scream from space.
I say I like it more than his rage scream later in the season.
20:10 I have to say, I actually think that joke aged surprisingly well. If it was just Krillen's comment or Bulma's comment I wouldn't think so, but the Woman Driver joke followed up with the Asian Driver joke then immediately glossed over with the Sayain joke is actually pretty funny imo. Maybe its just the rule of 3s but I think that aged better than the other edgy humor in season 1 & 2.
About the conversation at the beginning,
I feel like some people just didn't understand why DBZA took off so much more in the later seasons.
The character dynamics and switching the form of comedy is what solidified DBZA as THE abridged series.
Not sure if this is appropriate but wanted to mention that when you guys dropped the episode 10 rewatch 2 weeks back I had taken some LSD and "Vegeeeeeeeta.... I'm watching you" is what triggered the most insane trip of my life

Dbza has made its way onto tiktok and there are users who haven't seen the show asking if it's the actual English dub. You guys did an excellent job.

Despite the flak you guys receive, I think doing a more serious style of abridging was the best possible thing to do. I really think it was one of the defining factors of your success. While other abridged series were very short-lived (most not even going past 4-5 episodes) yours has passed the test of time (well, this and ygotas). And the more serious nature of yours drew more people in. While still having great comedy, you guys also gave us great character interactions and serious moments that kept people coming for more.
Delicious magical science is one of my favorite lines in the whole show

It just was confusing the first time, because we (or I at least) didn't expect that random German sentence out of nowhere, so I didn't get it until I catched 'Pisswasser' and thought to myself "Wait, are you crazy?" 😂

I always thought the running joke in the season is that Bulma is being completely reasonable and everyone is trashing her because this arc made Bulma inexplicably hatable.

I've said "Now inject this man with some science" every time I handed somebody one of the spare EpiPens I keep and I honestly forgot where I got it from.
I always felt that Bulma successfully wielding Popo's name to fly the ship was her Crowning Moment of Awesome and it carried her through the season for me. XD
It's the fact that their revising their work as they see it, you can really see how they've grown as writers/producers/directors/actors
The comedy between each season grows and matures as you guys continued to develop, which is fantastic. It felt like that too matured with the audience rather than being stuck in the same rut of jokes.
I think it's because you refined the characters in your own way that it would make doing the Buu Saga abridged a nightmare. Having abridged Popo lose is something I don't think can be written!

with how good they got at editing they could just have had Popo leave (maybe to chat with his buddy Zeno) for the important bits. The heroes would be like "but we need you Popo!" and he's just be like "....Bye..." because he doesnt care lol

Toryiama wanted Bulma along for an adventure and because of his writing style in that he wrote by the seat of his pants and just couldn't figure what do with her.

@@Zacman1123 Well Toryiama is no Eiichiro Oda in that there was never a plan for Dragon Ball and that often actually worked to it's benefit. This is an example of places where it didn't.

Can I just say... as a film score nerd... I absolutely--with my whole god damned chest--LOVE that you used the end credits theme from Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country for the sequence where Popo takes Bulma to Jupiter. It just fills me with such happiness.
Your choice to acknowledge, but skim over the filler was one of my favorite parts of the show. The whole Garlic Jr. episode was just perfect and exactly what I had been hoping you would do, right down to Popo just eating all of them at the end.

I'm so glad to finally get confirmation that the fake namekians were a reference to some of my favorite "villians" from ATHF. I've seen numerous reaction series to DBZA and nobody catchs it lol
I always saw Mr. Popo sort of as the Tom Bombadil of the DBZA universe. Unexplained seemingly unrivalled powers, mysterious demeanor and he's just there.
I believe those may have been my actual words, and I seem to recall you thought I was pranking you when I offered. ;P
Seriously though, you guys made something that I love on an equal level with the original series (if not more in some respects) and I'm glad I could help in some small measure.
One of my most favorite jokes from the series was the spaceship being controlled by Popo's voice. The whole Popo bit in general was just hilarious.
I used to work with Corey! I can't remember if I was watching an episode at the office or just made a reference to DBZA but I remember him getting excited and telling me about helping yall get better footage and he pulled up and episode where he was mentioned in the credits. Glad yall remember him so fondly!
I still love TakaLoki.Yall doing creator commentary has been awesome because there were a few jokes along the way that I was like "I know there was a joke there, but I'm missing the reference." so this has been awesome.
I'd say episode 11 is my favorite DBZA episode since it was the turning point of the whole parody.

I did, and I still prefer TFS's version.
Truth is, toriyama isn't cut out for the kind of story DBZ became. DBZA S3 is what happens when people care. When the creators aren't lazy enough to just forget vital plotpoints & keep trucking forward as if they themself didn't write it.
I will say there are times when it DOES just switch over into an updated but funny dub of the original. The biggest example being episode 37.
That being said, I think the abridged only works so well if you've seen or have working knowledge of the original.
Like DBZA is good on its own, but having seen the show (or even re-watching the abridged) lets you enjoy it more.

I watched the original show before I watched DBZA because a friend in highschool brought it up to me one day during school. Got home and watched episode 9 and thought it was funny and went back to watched the previous episodes. Kept up with DBZA after that. Loved the DBZA version of the cell games because of how much better it was than the original series on the regard of consistency and development of characters that needed it.
There is precedent for the parody being superior to the original. See also Sword Art Online Abridged. My old roommate and I used to say that SAOA is the only justification for the existence of SAO.
Funny thing about Popo's strength: One of the daizenshuu lists his power level as around 900 during the Piccolo/Saiyan sagas. Dude could have put up a fight against Raditz.
There’s no question in my mind that this series became as big and stood the test of time as well because you took it more seriously. I think saying you should’ve just taken it less seriously is just people underestimating how much work making good stuff is.
My new headcanon is that Popo is the former Omni-king (considering the voice of Zeno sounds almost childlike, whereas Popo is deep and dignified, like that of a king), who has retired to a backwater universe with a sub-par mortal level so that he'll be left alone, but his very PRESENCE is destabilizing fate and the universe around him. So more things keep happening to earth, heroes and villains keep popping up on the planet and doing battle, which amuses him, but with Goku it got to the point where they could actually get TO him, and he had to interact with them at last. This then started a snowball effect of more powerful people that were able to get to him, drawing stronger people to challenge them to this planet. And yet he still never comes into the spotlight, just the heroes that he trained to face these threats. Funny that, huh? x)

I loved the editing meta joke into irl popo. Love it all, felt very iconic is the only word I can think of. Love meta humor like that. Don’t see enough of it.
I just want to say, as a writer myself, it's amazing getting a peek behind the curtain for a series I hold in such high esteem. Love hearing all the little stories and details about their process making DBZ:A. Really looking forward to their commentary on the Cell Saga.
This where the brick-joke juggling and foreshadowing truly began.
The biggest thing that always bugged me was the edits were done it seemed at 30 FPS expected where the animation is 24 FPS. Just made it always slight unnatural, but still amazing and I love you all!

On the topic of people criticizing you guys for trying. I've often said, that eventually you guys hit such a mark of quality, that to keep it there (and you did) the episodes coming out slowed dramatically. Which, is fine. I'm certainly happy with how they turned out....that said, I don't think I could handle waiting the same amount of time for the whole
buu saga. So when it was announced that you weren't doing the buu saga, I was sad but it made a lot of sense to me, and I was fine with it.
What I didn't foresee, are the amazing shortz and HFIL. Man those are good. Great job guys.
