I think a hybrid solar diesel system would be better. Keep a battery Bank charge run on solar whenever possible. When the batteries Get Low start the diesel bring everything up to full charge then if you need to you can run completely on electric and be very quiet. To a submarine hearing that diesel engine shut off means death. Now they don't know where it is. It's only a small step to put anti-submarine grenade launchers on Deck. They're 80% effective if you have targeting
you can eliminate the need for a long tail of passive sensors or a towed sonar array if you program it to receive data from existing sonar arrays already installed in the pacific and atlantic ocean.. it does need its own sonar but with existing wireless tech getting better, tapping into the network of permanent sonar arrays under the ocean is a good advantage..
It should be noted that the US and China are not the only counties with this type of autonomous sea vessel. Denmark produced the Stanflex 100 mine warfare vessel which, like Sea Hunter, can be manned or unmanned. The Stanflex 100 vessel comes in two versions: MSF and MRD and is usually supported by a Danish Flyvefisken (Stanflex 300 class corvette). This technology was developed during the late 90's and introduced to the Royal Danish navy in the mid 2000's. The USN had a trial of the system in 2008 and this lead to the current program.
Concept is killer the execution of its mission meaning man in the loop is comforting. Killer robots are worrisome and can be problematic for all concerned.
The problem is that this is good for ONE thing. It can't do those hundreds of things a guided missle destroyer can do. It can supplement the fleet but it can't replace ANY ship in the fleet. It can't do anything that would require any human interaction. Its basically just a floating sensor platform that could be used to attack another ship. Which is only a small portion of what a ship does at sea in anything but a war time scenerio.
Thankfully nobody said that the Sea Hunter is going to be used for actual combat. It's essentially a seaborne version of the role that various aerial reconnaissance drones already in use by militaries around the world do. You can probably add weapons to this thing easily, but in that case they're gonna need to add remote control capabilities to make it effective in combat, and this thing is supposed to be completely autonomous. The Sea Hunter is just a floating sensor platform yes, because that's what it's built for.
It was a project announced to the public silly Edit: Even if it wasn't announced, it doesn't take a big imagination to think up unmanned boats when we already have driverless cars and UAV's.
You always have to assume this is what they want you to know. Blindly copying this idea might be very bad for you, because perhaps they already discovered it doesn't work but hope you waste money trying to copy it. Or perhaps they show you something with Diesel engines when they will be fitted with electric engines when they are deployed. Et cetera.

This is all about the money. BTW don't think for one second it will be unarmed, eventually it will be armed some how.
You guys really think the Navy hasn't incorporated anti personnel weapons into the ships defensive armaments ? 1. They'd need to stop it or slow it right down without being blown up trying. 2. They'd need to get aboard and stay alive despite its defensive systems. 3. They'd need to get thru its no doubt booby trapped human access points. 4. They'd need to know exactly how to quickly deactivate its drive system and gain control of its specifically designed encrypted networked mechanical operation systems. 5. They'd need to do this without the ship self destructing, frying its own electronics or being blown to bits & sunk by a US missile to prevent it from falling into hostile possession. They'd need to do all this while the US Navy was watching every move and trying every way to kill them ! You guys are talking about it like someone's hot wiring & stealing Bubba's pontoon boat ! LOL

How would a vessel like this deal with emp attacks? When we are talking about war with pier countries emp becomes a serious concern, not just emp from nuclear weapons, as countries are developing alternative emp weapons as well. A crewed vessel would seem less susceptible and could capable of replacing parts that fail due to emp attack.
I have no data on this particular vessel but as someone who worked in the defense industry for decades, I can tell you that pretty much all US military electronic equipment is emp protected.
Back in 2009 I was based out of Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, our shop was in an old hanger where we housed our boats, part of the hanger there was a group who were developing and testing a smaller system like Sea Hunter, but used a winged sail plus solar powered motors, was supposed to be able to be underway for months at a time with no support. I worked in counter piracy in the South East Asia AOR. Pirates would attack commercial fishing boats, kill the crews, strip the boat of anything useful then sink it. I asked one of the engineers how are you going to stop someone from boarding it, stealing all the equipment? He said they have cameras with satellite links.... I said so now you can watch them stealing all your stuff, We have very loud alarms that will scare them away...So you can watch them shoot the speakers! We can call a partner nation to intervene, So you think someone like Indonesia or Philippines will get there before everything will be gone? They were building this boat to work in SE Asia but they had no idea how things really worked in SE Asia. Our tax dollars at work!
Small drone ships and planes are undoubtedly the future of scouting, but I don´t think they could replace bigger ships, if that were the case we would be using only missile boats and coast guard vessels. Especially in a battle you need ships that can survive some damage and carry bigger loads.
The intent of vessels like these is to offload tasks that would be too cost-inefficient for larger ships into smaller, cheaper platforms. Basically you no longer need to use a cannon to kill the proverbial mosquito.
Wow: I didn't realize we have perfected an internal combustion engine! One that never has to have the oil checked, or changed. That always starts on the first try--always. With fuel and oil lines that never leak or clog. And, what about those electronic devices? Never have to be re-booted. Never go off line, even if, as thhe result of little fractures, salt water gets in to system somehow. And they are really cost effective. I mean, if they need help, or discover an enemy, there will be an old outdated ship with sailors that will be close by to take care of the enemy. So if we have a hundred of these wonder ships wandering around the world, we probably only have to have two or three hundred old style mannned ships (you need more than 100 because manned ships have to rotate crews, put into port for fuel, maintenance and food etc). Boy, quite a cost savings. I thought we needed a Navy to protect our nation and fight the enemy. Of course I an old fart (80), with outdated ideas.
the ships would operate out of a manned battlegroup capable of servicing the drone regularly. they would almost always have people nearby. but a speedboat full of techs is cheaper than a 2-300 man crew.
Redundancy. Lots and lots of redundancy. Sure, things break. give it enough backups and it can last a while. Also pretty sure these aren't I.C.E., but rechargeable electrics. If they have I.C.E. on them, they will probably be very small diesel battery chargers.
The search and rescue application for civilian emergencies is off the charts!!! Plane crashes or ships sinkings. These vessels don't have the limitations of a crew to stop it from looking for the plane or ship!!! It can go day and night!!!
so what happens if an enemy locates it and boards it? is the whole vessel then vulnerable to being taken over and the software being compromised ...its still got way too many what if's for me
Unfortunately, as should be 100% obvious, we are not in any way in a world where mankind has moved beyond armed conflict. Very, very far from it. The best way to prevent it is to be very, very good at it.
Usually military technology finds its way into commercial and consumer markets. The military is almost always on the cutting edge of technology because of threats around the world that have been around for thousands of years. In other words, they get "toys" first. Your type of thinking is exhausting to say the least, always downplaying threats and maligning those things and people that keep you safe from those threats. If you are so smart, maybe you should start a company and design things like this to accomplish what you think is worthy. You do realize though that something like this costs a ton of money. Hope you got that kind of cash laying around. Have a nice day!
And this is just what they showed us. There is no way anyone can convince me that these are unarmed. Metal that thinks for itself, no thanks. Where is the 9/10 of the rest of the money per day going to then?
The purpose of making it Autonomous is so it cannot be hacked like a remote controlled vessel. Regarding "frogmen" it wouldn't be of much use to risk boarding it as opposed to just shooting it. It is akin to a satellite in that it simply reports data so other assets know where the potential targets are. Even knocking one out reveals enemy locations.

@@willfriar8054 Consider for a moment how large the solar field would need to be.
you can eliminate the need for a long tail of passive sensors or a towed sonar array if you program it to receive data from existing sonar arrays already installed in the pacific and atlantic ocean.. it does need its own sonar but with existing wireless tech getting better, tapping into the network of permanent sonar arrays under the ocean is a good advantage..
Didn't Startrek TOS "The Ultramate Computer" M1series, was fully autonomous?
So DARPA is the real world version of Skynet? LOL
Darpa is more like the floor Q works on in the James bond films. They design and test everything from bandages to warships.
Unmanned who will protect these ships to keep others from looting them on the high seas for Tech..
This is how the littorial combat ship was advertised, hoping it will not go down as the same as the LCS or Zimwalt destroyer.
Wow, I am a retired 28 year navy vet. How would I have seen the world with these, am I being replaced? Yes.
The design reminds me of the Bangka that the Filipino fishermen use.
Catamarans are rad af! I love them!
Diesel powered so what's it's range & where is it getting fuel? What is it's self defense capability?
Things just keep getting better and better
So who in DARPA is passing info to the Chinese?
It was a project announced to the public silly
Edit: Even if it wasn't announced, it doesn't take a big imagination to think up unmanned boats when we already have driverless cars and UAV's.
A question, why does an autonomous ship have a bridge with windows and a safety fence around the deck?
Maintenance probably
Seacharger made it from California to Hawaii in July 2016.First unmanned vessel to actually make that trip… before Seahunter.
They all seem to be headed to Hawaii. I think we should man a recon mission to see what is special about the beaches and waters in that region.
whats to stop someone from boarding it and destroying it or stealing it? if it doesnt have any defenses

Im always confused on why the U.S. Government always shows what kind of technology we have to the entire world.
Trust me, they don't.
You always have to assume this is what they want you to know. Blindly copying this idea might be very bad for you, because perhaps they already discovered it doesn't work but hope you waste money trying to copy it. Or perhaps they show you something with Diesel engines when they will be fitted with electric engines when they are deployed. Et cetera.
Damm you grinding hard with the “dark saga”on youtube love the videos since the beginning keep on going!!!!!!!!
I can see this becoming the hunter of Russias proposed doomsday torpedo, the Poseidon. Slow enough to loiter around any proposed launch site or submarine carrying such, and then able to attack if it does go anywhere near a friendly target. At a very cheap price.
Detecting is one thing, getting a targeting lock is different. Poseidon is a nuclear torpedo which movies at a fast speed.

Oh my gosh thank you for circling the ship in the thumbnail. Now I know where to look on the thumbnail.
We shall see, autonomous is one big unknown. If we control it remotely can somebody board it and take over? or add their own sensors, or manipulate what it is sending? The questions are endless. This is all about the money. BTW don't think for one second it will be unarmed, eventually it will be armed some how.
I would hope the billions spent on stuff like this they would of thought about that. American's aren't that stupid.
@@-CLUMSYDIYer- I beg to differ, I could list a few of recent stupid things but....

One thing is being autonomus, another is being unmaned, is it both ? Will it than make decisions alone on where to attack a sub or will wait for commands ?
Question: What's the one thing dumber than making an autonomous warship?
Answer: Making an unarmed autonomous warship.
For now we'll just call it a "scout/surveillance system." Once we test and perfect the technology I'm sure it won't be too hard to attach some weapons

@@pookatim Would that include antenna's radars and other things on the surface that use electromagnetic radiation as part of the function?
@@timthorson52 Yes, the systems are designed to shut down in the event of EMP and quickly switch back on when the electronic pulses subside.
Our tax dollars at work!
ah ,thank you for this insight on why I hate people even more ,wasting money on things that will be fucking useless
I can only track diesel subs? Are those the ones we really need to worry about?
Small drone ships and planes are undoubtedly the future of scouting, but I don´t think they could replace bigger ships, if that were the case we would be using only missile boats and coast guard vessels. Especially in a battle you need ships that can survive some damage and carry bigger loads.
The intent of vessels like these is to offload tasks that would be too cost-inefficient for larger ships into smaller, cheaper platforms. Basically you no longer need to use a cannon to kill the proverbial mosquito.
What's to stop bad guys from just taking the ship or using it for target practice?
The second you take humans out of the concept of war, you loose the humanity that stops the war happening.
You must not know about history. Wars have never ended since they began.
It prevents casualties on our side.
Humanity failed in preventing Russia from attacking its neighboring countries
China has many more people. This helps even things up.
Didn't realise JavaScript was so powerful
It can go day and night!!!
skynet incoming .,. rise of the AI . . eehh wtf
so what happens if an enemy locates it and boards it? is the whole vessel then vulnerable to being taken over and the software being compromised ...its still got way too many what if's for me
Also arsenal ship. Give it a lot of VLS and pair it with surface attack groups and have the crewed ships able to launch missiles from the drone ships
@ 3:13, I didn't think we still had active battleships and if we do why choose a battleship Why not a P-3 Orion drop an active torpedo?
ummm how is it spider like , and what clock is ticking ???????
This would be a neat ocean mapping tool, but everything has to be a weapon. So exhausting

These videos get so many details wrong. How did you manage to confuse the LCS and the Sea hunter just because they both trimarans?
It looks like they have taken inspiration from the "Ocean Adventurer" yacht for that boat.
The best warships in the digital age
What would keep Pirates from boarding the vessel?
what about storms in sea? will it sail through real waves easily?then you think about hackers and frogmen boarding it
The purpose of making it Autonomous is so it cannot be hacked like a remote controlled vessel. Regarding "frogmen" it wouldn't be of much use to risk boarding it as opposed to just shooting it. It is akin to a satellite in that it simply reports data so other assets know where the potential targets are. Even knocking one out reveals enemy locations.
Can the Sea Hunter be boarded by an enemy while at sea? Can an electrical charge be sent through the hull to thwart pirates, etc?
Just amazing times we all live in …
