Vanishing Point (PlayStation vs Dreamcast) Side by Side Comparison

- A side-by-side comparison of Vanishing Point between the PlayStation version (PS1/ "Port" version) and the Dreamcast version (Original/ First version).
The Dreamcast version was an absolute beast to look at back in 2001. The PSone version is like one of those 'impossible ports' that we see on the Switch these days, it shouldn't be possible with those specs but someone made it happen.
DC with the easy win, but that's a damn fine looking PS1 version given the hardware. 👍
PS1 did a great job here. Dreamcast looks nicer and that draw distance is still impressive.
The lack of nearly any pop-in for a ps1 racing game blows my mind.
@@Hausbrauen I noticed that too...I don’t think I seen any pop in...
In my opinion, PsX version is better than DC... DC is higher resolution, but PsX have more details (look the train for example), the rocks of the mountain look more real 3d on PsX, while on DC, they look smoother, but less feeling of 3D, colours are also indeed nicer on 32 bit version, incredible.
@@Hausbrauen If you compare PSX with a closer hardware, Sega Saturn, you realize that Sega fans only can cry looking at it.... I played this title on original PlayStation conected to CRT TV and damn! That game looks amazing. Maybe framerate is not the best but track drawing is great. And finally, car control need a training.
@@RobertPLWitek Nah, I detest being a fanboi of *any* company, so I value each console for its strengths as well as its weaknesses. The Saturn was an *incredibly underrated* console -- capable of near-HD resolution with smooth 60fps. What's worth crying over regarding the Saturn, is how poorly it was utilized and marketed outside of Japan. But I agree with you that PSX outshined the Dreamcast a mile in this particular showing, considering what it's capable of by comparison.
The engine and track design were extremely efficient to prevent pop-up and need for fogging. The starter cars were easier on PS1 as the physics engine was sampling at 30fps whereas the DC was 60 fps, which provided greater responsiveness. This contributed in a negative way to the starter cars which had poorer handling capabilities than the sports cars you unlocked later. What a lot of people didn't quite get (at no fault of their own) is VP was designed as more Test Drive meets Ridge Racer. A time trial game where the challenge was learning to drive cars with vastly different performance capabilities as fast as possible through a closed course. In a nutshell, you learn how to control each car at the edge of their performance capabilities and rewarded with better cars as you progress. The Ford Explorer will not control like the Audi TT but that isn't an excuse for how difficult the starter cars were for players. If you stuck with it, the later cars were a visceral experience drifting through corners at top speeds. This is where the game really shined but the learning curve was too steep to get there.
The PlayStation version is a technical marvel. The development team chose the name 'Vanishing Point' because it has no draw distance pop-in or fog on the Dreamcast. The fact they also achieved this on the ancient PS1 hardware at the time is insane. Even stuff like Gran Turismo 2 had obvious pop-in.
I actually prefer it over the Dreamcast original despite running at half the frame rate, if only because the physics are less floaty. It's a fun arcade racer either way.
Agreed on all points. Well said!
Came here to say this.
Are you sure you aren't perceiving more floatey feeling of the physics simply because of the halved framerate?
Looks and sounds quite good for a PS1 port. The stages retained cosmetic features like the first stages train and wind turbines. Interesting vehicles to select from especially racing in a Ford Explorer and Ranger.
I played the hell out of this on both consoles and it looks great either way. Easily one of my favorite games of that era!
Both versions give me a different nostalgia trip lol. PS1 has that unique shader and those nearest point textures. While I never had a DC I had a Voodoo 2 in my family PC and DC visuals remind me of playing PC games in the late 90s.
Damn... the draw distance on this game is really quite good for a ps1 game. Don't think I saw any pop-in at all!
a lot better on the dreamcast but I will say the the psx game has a certin charm to it.
Exactly. I grow up playing PS1 version and I loved and still love it. Even though the graphics on DC are in another league they retained almost everything on the PS1 version
Extremely competent job on the PS1 port. This game looks good in the original hardware as well
I’m amazed they got this game to run on the ps1. Great stuff 👍🏻
Such a hidden gem game. It would be more populare if it was released on ps2
Dreamcast easily and the DC probably isn't even breaking a sweat
As everyone else is saying, this is an incredible port to the PS1. I was shocked that I did not see a single polygon pop in, in the distance. It’s very clean on DC, but kind of flat in aesthetic for a DC game as well. I think they could have pushed the system a decent bit further without introducing any fog/pop-in.
Looks like the PS1 has refined controls and runs a bit slower paced, to its advantage.
Dreamcast all the way but the PS1 port was pretty good too despite being quite buggy at times.
e no casso do Dreamcast
yeah it played ps one games better than ps2 did
Sí, jugó mejor a los juegos de PS One que a PS2.
I played both versions, I can’t explain, but on ps1 it was more pleasant to play, it was the car’s handling on dualshock that was noticeably better. The Dreamcast had its own cool racing hits, these are txr1-2 and msr, but I also lacked control there, such as dualshock gave
Dual shock doesn't do anything for racing games. You only need one analogue stick for that.
Agreed, I remember the DC version being SUPER floaty. It just lacked that pick up and play, intuitive feel, a must for an arcade style racer.
I wasn t aware of the ps1 version and loved the dreamcast one. The video are almost the same but thats it. The ps1 version looks like a skin of other ps1 games like ridge racer. Yes it is great job but classic on ps1 where on dreamcast the light, the model and everything else is refine or different.
that kind of game they build the PS1 version from scratch to resemble the original as much as they can, but it's a different product.
Playstation does a great job! definitely to its limits! Physics is amazing
Recently my collection of retro consoles was added to the Sega Dreamcast and Vanishing Point looks and plays very cool even compared to the games that came out already on DC. Of course MSR seems to me a level higher (vibe of the game is different btw), but compared to TXR where the map loading is almost constantly visible - it's heaven and earth. If you have a Dreamcast and you haven't played VP yet - I recommend it.
Vanishing Point has better tracks than most tracks found on Ridge Racer -games.
But, while playing, you simply can't help but wish that this game would control exactly like RR Type 4, or RRV.
Hence Vanishing Point is misleading title for this game.
"High pressure racing" should be proper name for this.
It was called vanishing point because there is zero pop-in. It's a technical title.
Although not as smooth looking as the Dreamcast version. The PS1 did a wonderful job as I see details that put that system to its knees.
The menu confirm sound sounds just like the Silent Hill 2 menu confirm sound
Despite the differences, the PS1 version looks quite good compared to its competitor, leaving it in a respectable position, however, the DC version is for obvious reasons the undisputed queen in this match.
Versão do PS1 muito boa. Toda jogabilidade e conteudo (pistas, carros, modeos de jogo etc) é exatamente igual, a parte sonora é igual, as CGs e menus iguais etc.
I loved both versions, the game's difficulty can drive one crazy though.
Had the PS1 version runs at 60 fps it would play much better than Dreamcast due to its having better controller of the two, Dreamcast is still the coolest controller ever but it just not comfortable to use and analog stick are slippery plastic.
Very nice work on the psx, very playable. The Dreamcast version is awesome, i really like this game
I always wonder whether the DC would have run MGS2 at levels close to PS2
Yes Dreamcast could, but definitely couldn’t handle the particles effects at a reasonable framerate without it being nerfed. Scene and character geometry would have to be cut down. Also multiple discs would have to be used and new control scheme due to dreamcast lacking buttons and 2nd analog stick.
@@waterheart95 I don't think poly count had to be lower, since Shenmue 1-2 pushes more polygons than MGS2
@Jigsaw2383 If they want to hit a good framerate, they would be cuts, and mgs2 does a lot of polygons for details on the textures and also physics objects.
Then, the lighting would take a hit.
Enfim ✌️
I finally watched it. Por fin lo he visto. I've first heard about this game from PSM.
I've been wanting to check this game out since. Basically similar to Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare.
Básicamente similar a Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare.
Not bad on the PS1, I think on it's own the game is impressive. However when pitted against the DC version, this is where you can clearly see the 4 year gap in technology. You have properly filtered textures, higher color depth, additional geometry in the background and on the vehicle along with better lightening.
5:59 seems to have more detail on PS1. The arch has holes in it all throughout
On PS1 it's just a flat 2D billboard object so the holes are just texture transparency. On dreamcast it's a fully 3 dimensional object of a certain thickness so texture only holes would look wrong (and making actual round holes would just be a waste of polygons). A little bit ahead there are similar objects which again are flat 2D on PS and have a kind of peace sign shaped (3 straight lines) gap where on DC it's again a 3 dimensional object with a gap that is filled with a billboard texture with oval decorations in the same transparent texture technique. There are many such differences throughout it and on no occasion does the PS do something beyond the DC, it's always the opposite. Which makes sense, it's still a great version on PS and they paid attention to detail to make it every bit as impressive for that hardware utilizing it to the fullest and not just removing things and calling it a day as you'd see many times on DC ports from the more powerful machines.
The Dreamcast version is perfect.
The draw distance on PS one is huge comparing to most of other PS one games
Ps1 original still looks gorgeous!
Id definitely take PS1's lighting effects for 30fps on Dreamcast. Its like its barely there on dreamcast...
Keep in mind that the PS1 was a lot older.
What about frames for Dreamcast?
Graficamente fico com a versão do Dreamcast, obvio
DC version obviously wins, but the PS1 port holds its own.
20fps on ps1 but very beautyfull.. impressive. On Dreamcast is very nice, in 60fps easy
Dreamcast would have held its own against PS2.
it did for a while...
Same can be said for Saturn and ps1. Both were fantastic and underutilized consoles for their time. Sega started getting cocky and sIoppy, and damn, did it cost them.
@@Hausbrauen PS1 got to maxed out its hardware as it gets but Saturn was the one underutilized with its weird hardware they were on a try hard mode adding two CPUs and eight processors that barely anyone but SEGA themselves know how to use it, hell even SEGA themselves were struggling with its hardware.
@@barebarekun161 I agree for the most part, mostly to my point. Sega's entirely-avoidable mistakes with the Saturn alone doomed them out of the console market years later. Otherwise both Saturn and Dreamcast could've easily dominated their console generations, and Sega would've continued to succeed in the console market.
Such a strange moment in gaming. It’s my opinion that people were genuinely unaware of the existence of the Dreamcast. It’s the only explanation.
The answer is, everyone already had ps1 and they were waiting for ps2. So if the game is on both ps1 and DC may as well get it for the system you have.
@@Lightblue2222 it’s my opinion that most people were unaware of the commercial availability or existence of the Sega Dreamcast. The PS2 was untested. The PS1, like the PS2 was a commodity and not even vaguely exciting. It was like a plain white plate upon which food can be served and Eaton off of. It’s basically functional. The Dreamcast was a special and exciting machine that charmed all who experienced it.
The upcoming release of the PS2 was not a particulars exciting or eagerly anticipated event as you and _many_ others suggest.
The narrative that the anticipation of the PS2 destroyed the commercial viability of the DC is cannon historical narrative at this point despite not making any sense.
People are well aware that hype is hype. 10% of people enjoy the dream that is hype and will jump onto the first shipments. It’s a shame it took like 4 years before the PS2 had much worth playing.
It’s a shame Sega pulled out the race whilst they were in first place. It’s a shame Blockbuster took all the DC games off the shelf the very day after the DC was announced discontinued. Worldwide. It’s a shame the media did not support the Dreamcast.
@@Lightblue2222 yes. People are unable to distinguish between the graphical capabilities of the PS1 and Dreamcast. Consider $200 expensive and decide that instead of purchasing a next generation system with an existing rich catalogue of games for basically small change is not the best idea when they could pay significantly more for a machine with only shit games. Because it is impossible to sell a system and it’s games once you’ve bought one.
The Dreamcast had a massive advertising campaign, people knew about it but didn’t trust sega after the Saturn
@@alexwilliams7530 absolutely! PLUS sony had the opposite: more trust and hype than imaginable :) even pc people like me expected that to KILL anything (even PCs) :D
I love PS1 version the graphics look great
The Dreamcast is the winner , no lie Dreamcast is far superior than PS1 , best console all time + graphics power Experience
without crt tv and rgb cable you cant see the real graphics of ps1,this one looks so pixelated as if it was hooked via rf cable,ps1's graphics are so much sharper and less pixelated
I played the Dreamcast version back in the day. It was a game i desperately wanted to enjoy, but the handling was so bad. I think i completed it. Is the PS better in terms of handling?
Nah dreamcast version has better handling physic rather than PS1 version
@@25Berlina really? I didn't think it could ever be worse. Thanks :)
They're both identical in handling. The game is a skill check, and the cars auto center, so you need to tap the controls rather than hold a direction and learn to drift properly around corners. Once you get good and progress enough, you'll unlock tuning and can go in-depth with flywheel inertial, suspension, breaks. You can make any care as great, or terrible, as you please.
The PS1 port looks better than GT2 in graphics.
Does this one have a hood view?
I don't really think the PS1 version is a port. Just because of the release dates.

PlayStation was a beast.
Cool game!
People knew about dreamcast here in Europe but everyone wanted to play Fifa, Final Fantasy and Gran Tourismo. Instead sega gave us the shity WWsoccer 2000 , sega gt and phantasy star online without a real story mode
impressive for ps1 standards
and the world chose the ps1 instead 💀

Dreamcast wins!
@@JoaoGabriel-sv3wmIf companies were still programing for Sega Saturn in 2001 then this game would definitely be possible on that platform. By 1998 they were really starting to come around to how to really use the saturn. I remember an article I read in high school with developers that were disappointed that developement moved on to other systems because they were creating game engines for saturn and playstation that had advanced graphical effects similar to how the 6th gen systems were. With dynamic lights and shadows, compression techniques for texturing and other things. They were dissappointed because their work didnt really get to see the light of day and they thought the systems had more to give. Especially the Saturn. There are some example videos out there from some of these works. Sadly I also cant remember what magazine this interview was in since it was the early 2000s and over 20 years ago.

playstation 32bit vs dreamcast 128bit playstation win
That gpu in the PS1 is ridicioulsly feature packed the built in video codec makes the video look just as good as the Dreamcast video.
They used the same video file quality for both due to disc space limits.
Dreamcast can do Mpeg 1 decoding natively, while ps1 uses mjpg which is not built into the ps1 gpu, its part of the mdec .
@@waterheart95 That was one thing that blew my mind about the original PlayStation, it played actual video clips, like the clips in Tony Hawks Pro Skater, along with FMV's such as Tekken and Tomb Raider's cutscenes. I mean after the SNES/Mega Drive that was hugely impressive. Especially how in THPS1, they had video playing on billboards in the background during actual gameplay.
DREAMCAST WINS
Ps1 gran1 feel
Reflections on ps1 are reversed, the car is smaller and polygons are wobbly, but it was compared with a superior hardware, so did a fine job. Dreamcast wins
Nope. PS1 wins as usual against dreamcast. Nice try fanboy.
Polygons are better than this one,if it was hooked on a crt tv with rgb cable it would be looking way better
@gllmll7227 ps1 had to split the bigger polygons to reduce the wobbling artifacts and make up for the lack of perspective correction anyway, all games did, as for crt monitors, Dreamcast also had a CRT output.
Dreamcast best
Lovely game but It's kind of sad that PSX ports to Dreacast just upressed the game and filter textures. Dreamcast can do so much more
If you check the dates, the DC version is the original version.
The PS1 version is actually the port here. Also, the Dreamcast version features higher poly car models as well as 60 FPS.
The op is actually spot-on. Regardless of which game/port released first, your points still stand. Dreamcast should've looked *much* better than this in comparison to ps1.
@@HausbrauenI bet Its because they built this game with playstation in mind. If it was made strictly for the Dreamcast then it just may have been a better game on that system. But sadly so many games on the Dreamcast were designed in line with the playstation so they were limited in scope.

I had this game for the DC back in the day and the controls were just awful. It felt like driving a forklift over a road made of butter. I couldn't get into it at all because of this 'feature'.
Cars auto center, you tap the stick rather than hold it. It's game is very easy to play once you learn it, and drifting is super satisfying, especially when you unlock tuning.
