This was the very reason I wanted a Genesis when I was a kid. The Genesis brought us very close to having the arcade experience at home. Even games like Sonic the Hedgehog and playing that for the first time was mind blowing with its graphics and sound!!

Always wondered why a lot of sprites looked smaller on the genesis. Specially the fighting ones. Thanks for the video!!..... Hope someday they're able to add more games to the genesis mini 2
Thanks so much for watching! It's always a little disappointing seeing those smaller sprites in fighting games after having just played the original arcade port but to be fair back in the day I was just happy to play something like Mortal Kombat at home.
It's always neat to see an entire shared library side-by-side. In some cases, especially when you do stuff like the Atari VCS/2600 or Game Boy etc, it's just neat to see how came of with a de-make of sorts to squeeze a game from a much more powerful arcade or home system into something resembling the original but with its own twist, sometimes those are fun and sometimes they failed horribly, but those are always neat either way. You get a small handful of titles on the later, more-powerful systems like the Genesis with stuff like the down-port of Virtua Fighter 2, but much of the time on the 16-bit consoles you have more just straight ports. Sometimes they are good and sometimes bad, and your videos show enough of the differences to where you can decide "Most outstanding. Hey, this port on this system is worth checking out" or "Bogus. Heinous. Most non-triumphant. This version of the game isn't worth even watching a clip of let alone playing." Right? That's how I feel: it's just a fun comparison that might get me to try out a game I've never heard of or a port that looks cool that I've not played before. It's not about hating on any system but the opposite: it's just about seeing what's good, fun, different, or bad about each game on each system. There's more difference and changes in ports on the older systems due to massively different hardware, and these comparisons help you find little gems of cool, neat versions of different. Now, usually the best games on systems are the exclusives, and that's the case on retro consoles too of course, but it's still neat to play old ports too especially if the devs did their own thing and made something that's got some unique things going on compared to the original game. I'll have to watch through the ones here that are bonus games not featured in the main season. I can say with certainty that my favorite game in this list is Mortal Kombat 2 since it's my favorite game of all time period lol. It isn't the best port, but I sure as heck had dozens of hours of fun with it. The Genesis port doesn't get as much play from me these days because I'll usually play one of the better ports or the arcade version, but it sits there by my Nomad or sometimes I throw it in the Genesis I have hooked up and gets played a few times a year. UMK3 was fun and one of the most expensive non-collectors-edition games I bought until the last few years. I love love love NBA Hangtime (and of course Jam and T.E.), and think it's a great port, better than the Jam/T.E. ports and College Slam too. The Genesis port of MK1 is why I bought my Genesis in '93 instead of getting a Super Nintendo like I had been wanting for a while. The Street Fighter ports were fun and Samurai Shodown even if they are not perfect by any means. Now, does the arcade win in 99% of the cases? Sure. But, many of the Genesis ports were good enough back in the day, and occasionally, if you like FM synth, a few of the games you might prefer the music on over some of the arcade games' compositions (Matt Furniss' MK1 and MK2 music may not be better, but I do like them just as well as Dan Forden's original tracks). Party on, Bill!
Thanks so much my friend for watching through the whole season from the very beginning! You have a knack for summarizing things so well that I have trouble adding anything because you covered all bases (are belong to us) and add insightful knowledge to everything better than I ever could. You make a point in here too that I wish the many people commenting "this is not a fair comparison" on the PS1 vs DC video would realize; it's not about saying one is better than the other. It's seeing how developers handled these ports on hardware that couldn't stack up to the arcade, well with maybe the exception of Flicky. Despite it not being the best port it's hard to argue against MKII. I too played the hell out of this version and I think it's easy to forget that back then most of us didn't care if a game was 100% accurate to the arcade as long as it still resembled it and was fun to play. There are games like Altered Beast that kind of get trashed online these days that I played to death and I still think is as fun as the arcade even if it's technically inferior in every way. Overall this season balanced itself out. I got to try out games I'd never played like Crackdown and Snow Bros that I loved and had trouble putting down to record other games. On the other hand it had the unholy trio of this channel with Hard Drivin', Race Drivin', and Klax...
@@shotgunl Lol! I'd say the same but I know that's a lie. At some point they're gonna come up again. I mean I had to play Klax for the freaking GX4000 of all systems!

That is something I'd love to do some day. The Saturn in particular had a massive amount of arcade ports between contemporary games and all of the compilations with older arcade games.
I loved Sunset Riders as a kid. In the arcades it was up there with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Knights of the Round, and X-Men for me. Seeing footage of it now where you are just gunning down an endless horde of Native Americans made me cringe pretty hard

It's pretty crazy to think of how far console gaming has come in such a relatively short period of time. The Genesis really held its own with so many of these ports.
That was one of those grey area games. Technically Super Thunder Blade is a Genesis exclusive even though it's basically a glorified expanded port of Thunder Blade. It's basically in the same category of Galaxy Force 1 & 2 and After Burner 1 & 2 where they are pretty much the same game but are considered different entries in the series.
I rather play most of these arcade games on the Sega Genesis. It's funny because when I was a kid growing up I was always disappointed with the Genesis Version of games & always wanted to play the arcade versions all the time. As an adult I replayed those games & found that the Genesis controllers were a lot better than playing with the arcade Joy sticks.
I'd take the Genesis controller over arcade joysticks almost every time too which I'm sure is an unpopular opinion. I'm so used to that controller from having played it so much over my lifetime that it's like an extension of my hand whereas you really need to get the feel for each arcade cabinet.
SEGA GENESIS MEGA DRIVE IS A BEAST Genesis got a lot of Arcade graphics experience home ports , I see so many genesis games very close to the Arcade version in the graphics and music sound + textures , Sega Genesis machine show how is capable to hold everything just like Arcade version There is 7 games super close to the Arcade version everywhere almost Arcade perfect ports it is not a joke ALTERED BEAST ROADBLASTERS SUPER HANG ON AFTER BURNER OUT RUN STRIDER SUPER LOCOMOTIVE
I was surprised just how well it held its own compared to the arcade. There were some others like Snow Bros that were also nearly arcade perfect. It's no wonder it's such a fondly remembered console.
If you bought the Genesis purely for bringing the arcade home you were definitely not disappointed. Probably the best arcade port library of any home console other than the Neo Geo
There were so many and a ton were great conversions. The Neo Geo AES was undoubtedly the best when it came to a 1 to 1 of the arcade but with the price tag and only being SNK games it's super limited.
Neo Geo was around 70,000 yen in Japanese yen. The CD type had an extremely long loading time and hardly sold. I think SNK would have been better off not making hardware.
In 90s i preferred megadrive mainly for arcade games instead of supernintendo (but in graphics supernintendo was better honestly..i dont forget its supreme ,but costly, SUPERFX chip..) 🕹️
In the non-compilation videos I usually do a section of each individually before showing both at the same time with the audio panned hard left and hard right. That seems to be the most common practice for bigger comparison channels than mine.
Why oh why weren't the super scalers attempted on the Sega CD?!? Yeah, the SEGA CD still couldn't do arcade perfect versions of Galaxy Force, Outrun, After Burner or Thunder Blade but they would have been so much better than the regular Genesis versions! Re-do's on the CD of Capcom classics such as Ghouls n Ghosts, Forgotten Worlds or SF2 would have looked and sounded amazing! So many missed opportunities!
I think about the same thing with the 32x. Since Sega was insistent on putting it out they could have made it the budget console for kids like me who's parents weren't about to buy a PS1 or Saturn and they could have ported great versions of 80s and early 90s arcade games.
@@RetroComparisons I would have loved to see those same games on the X as well. At least Sega did the Dreamcast right but unfortunately it was already too late.
Probably not a very popular opinion, but Fatal Fury 2 on Sega Genesis had a much better gameplay than any other version of the game, including the arcade one.
@@DontKnowDontCare6.9 What can I say, I played the SNES, Neo Geo and Sega Genesis. And gameplay factor, the Sega version is just the better one, it is faster, you can do more combos and stuff. You don't even need to trust me, just play it and see what I am talking about.
I grew up during the arcade golden age era, genesis and the Super Nintendo consoles were good but still they were no match for the arcade graphics and sound capabilities, the only console that was able to compete with the arcade’s was the ludicrously expensive Neo Geo which in fact was identical in both graphics and sound capabilities
@@RetroComparisons I guess that was a marketing decision, keep some distance between the arcade and the home consoles in order to make money from the arcade’s which were their true arena/battle ground for prestige. I believe both Sega and Nintendo were perfectly capable to build console similar to Neo Geo but that would be like pissing into the well they were drinking. As far as when did the arcade start started to fade off, I think it was the ps1 that turned the tide, not the Dreamcast. after 32x failure Sega started to lose credibility which eventually led to their downfall
@@JamesBond-gg4wg I think Sega & Nintendo definitely had the capabilities to have the true home arcade experience but it certainly would have cost a lot more so that in conjunction with cannibalizing the arcade side of the business (particularly with Sega) it didn't make much sense. I agree, I think the PS1 era is when the arcade side started to fade for sure but I think the Dreamcast was probably the first regularly priced console that was almost completely on par with the arcade when it came to 1:1 ports looking nearly identical.
@@RetroComparisons When the PS1 and Dreamcast came out I still wanted the Neo Geo console, it was that good. I still wish I was rich enough to get one, in a retro perspective it was still better then all emulations and versions they made for all the console even today, even on the ps4 the arcade game graphics are inferior
@@echelon2k8 Game play is much tighter compared to the arcade I didn't fell rushed like I had to complete the level so quickly Remember this game was released in the 80s so games were more about sight sound and magic back then The Genesis port just nails it the music was superbly done yes there are a few missing voice samples but the points get across as they should Now there are a few differents with the background graphics and color but I don't think it's that much of issue Overall it's a superb port a Technical Achievement
Is it just me but with a lot of these games, except for extra colours, slightly smother scrolling and better sound on the arcade versions, there is not that much difference.
Genesis делало для ваших телевизоров всё, что только могла, из последних сил, из последних дорожек на микросхемах. Но вам этого видимо никогда не понять...
I'm a little younger (born in the mid 80s, raised in the 90s) and I'm in the same boat as you were I didn't see the majority of these games in the arcade either.
wow I never knew how good some of the original arcade games were looking. talk about shitty ports huh. let's do a Genesis vs DOS now :D or any console vs DOS to be honest. I really want to see PS1 vs PC now
i had a Atari st it was expensive then i played a friends master system that was 8 bit and the games and graphics blew the Atari st away then i saw the megadrive a virtual arcade at home i had to have one they were just so good !!
Sega was always really pushing technology and it's crazy to think that not only did the Master System look that good in 1986 but also had native RGB output, something even the N64 didn't have 10 years later.
Sega's hardware was most attractive. Why did they fail so badly with the Saturn when the GENESIS won the Super Super Nintendo? They are completely bad at business. Why didn't they load the Saturn with too many chips and sell it at a loss?
There were so many factors with the Saturn failing between the whole 32x debacle, the cost compared to the PS1, the unexpected early release without telling the developers, originally building it with 2D in mind only for the 5th gen to be all about 3D, and probably other stuff I'm not thinking of at the moment.
The Nintendo brand is like Disney or Pixar. Their original IP simply made the Genesis look like a crude copycat and always second best. It didn’t help that the Genesis had muddy colors which made it look even more second rate and unpolished.
First: Sega never won any console generation. It was 49.1 million versus 30.75 million Secon: Sega got paranoid and designed the Saturn to combat Jaguar. But when it was going to batttle the PS and N64, they added a second microchip, making game development difficult. Third: Stupid business decisions. Shadow dropping the Saturn way ahead of the PS was an epic fail and angered lots of game devs making launch games for Saturn. Fourth: what Sega did with the shadow drop resonated until the Dreamcast era. EA and several game companies promised not to support Sega, leaving them with not a lot of third party games. Fifth: Mr. Sabotage, Yuji Naka.
Space Harrier on the Genesis Mini 2 is not a genesis game, unlike say Darius or Fantasy Zone the mini 1, the ROM can't be played on real hardware. The game is made for an emulator of a console that doesn't exist they called the "Mark V"
@@ribenasquash Yeah it is quite a difference from what you'd normally see in a Genesis game. I'm not sure why that never got released because I thought it was a really fun game that picked up where Super Off Road left off.
I always disliked sega sounds.. they had either a hollow tin can sound cyberball is a perfect example , which let’s face it most 16 bit arcade games had that sound as well as damp sounds..like altered beast, it sounds like he is punching wet cardboard.. or the sounds in columns.. don’t get me wrong I loved my genesis and Saturn , but I might be biased cuz I grew up playing dk, Mario punchout and Popeye in the arcade .

SEGA GENESIS MEGA DRIVE IS A BEAST
Genesis got a lot of Arcade graphics experience home ports , I see so many genesis games very close to the Arcade version in the graphics and music sound + textures , Sega Genesis machine show how is capable to hold everything just like Arcade version
There is 7 games super close to the Arcade version everywhere almost Arcade perfect ports it is not a joke
ALTERED BEAST
ROADBLASTERS
SUPER HANG ON
AFTER BURNER
OUT RUN
STRIDER
SUPER LOCOMOTIVE
I was surprised just how well it held its own compared to the arcade. There were some others like Snow Bros that were also nearly arcade perfect. It's no wonder it's such a fondly remembered console.
If you bought the Genesis purely for bringing the arcade home you were definitely not disappointed. Probably the best arcade port library of any home console other than the Neo Geo
if you want the arcade experience in the 16-bit era it was either
FM Towns Marty, Sharp X68000, Super Nintendo, Turbo-Grafx
There were so many and a ton were great conversions. The Neo Geo AES was undoubtedly the best when it came to a 1 to 1 of the arcade but with the price tag and only being SNK games it's super limited.
Neo Geo was around 70,000 yen in Japanese yen. The CD type had an extremely long loading time and hardly sold. I think SNK would have been better off not making hardware.
The actual best arcade ports, if youre not wearing nostalgia glasses, were actually on the SNES and TG-X.
In 90s i preferred megadrive mainly for arcade games instead of supernintendo (but in graphics supernintendo was better honestly..i dont forget its supreme ,but costly, SUPERFX chip..) 🕹️
Sega: wait till you get a load of the price for Virtua Racing Genesis
Sega killing Eternal Champions to focus on Virtua Fighter is the reason why that turd exists in the Genesis
Nice video.
Thanks so much!
Have you ever considered NOT having both games audio play at the same time?
Until the release of PS, Saturn, and 64, game consoles were made by Japanese people. It was a time when I felt very proud to be Japanese.
@@lowpower2525 Those 16 bit systems were amazing and still are to this day!
@@AnaheimRob Yes! Sega has changed, but Yutaka Suzuki and Mr. Nagoshi are still making them!
It's impressive how many times the Genesis version has actually looked better than the arcade version.
Probably not a very popular opinion, but Fatal Fury 2 on Sega Genesis had a much better gameplay than any other version of the game, including the arcade one.
Fatal Fury 2 on the Genesis is better than the arcade one?
Thats not a popular opinion. Thats a Sega Never Died in the 2000s opinion.
@@DontKnowDontCare6.9 What can I say, I played the SNES, Neo Geo and Sega Genesis. And gameplay factor, the Sega version is just the better one, it is faster, you can do more combos and stuff. You don't even need to trust me, just play it and see what I am talking about.
29:05 Oh yeah!
29:35 OH YEAH!!!
Some of those games, the Genesis looked even better than the arcade!
Yeah the Genesis really showed off its power for a lot of these.
Arcade at home!
Notice the limitations in memory; eg Gouls n Ghosts got 5 megs
I grew up during the arcade golden age era, genesis and the Super Nintendo consoles were good but still they were no match for the arcade graphics and sound capabilities, the only console that was able to compete with the arcade’s was the ludicrously expensive Neo Geo which in fact was identical in both graphics and sound capabilities
With the exception of the Neo Geo AES the arcade games always seemed like a generation ahead until the Dreamcast came out.
Genesis fez muito para um sistema de 200 dólares , uma placa arcade dessas custavam entorno de 1500 a 2000 dólares ! .
They really knocked it out of the park with so many of these.
Mortal Kombat on Genesis didn't normally have blood and was a hidden feature.
That was one of those codes that made its way around every playground.
ABACABB
D, U, L, L, A, R, D
E-swat? R-Type ?
Those are both Master System games. E-Swat does have a sort of port/sort of sequel on the Genesis but that one is kind of a grey area.
i must say,.. this is THE BEST showcase of what the GENESIS DOES WHAT NINTENDONT
The Genesis was a great arcade gaming console.
That Strider port is better than the Arcade IMO and the Music WOW
A lot of these Genesis ports are extremely impressive.
There's no way the Strider console port was objectively better than the arcade. Nostalgia is one he|| of a drug.
@@echelon2k8 That's just my opinion but I have my reason why I think it's better I've played both Genesis is a solid experience.
@@davisdomain2071 What's your reason?
@@echelon2k8 Game play is much tighter compared to the arcade I didn't fell rushed like I had to complete the level so quickly
Remember this game was released in the 80s so games were more about sight sound and magic back then
The Genesis port just nails it the music was superbly done yes there are a few missing voice samples but the points get across as they should
Now there are a few differents with the background graphics and color but I don't think it's that much of issue
Overall it's a superb port a Technical Achievement
ty
Thanks for watching!
COOL ! 💪🏿
Thanks for watching!
32 bit vs 16 bit ?
It kind of varies for the arcade games.
ok
So Moonwalker is okay, but freakin' Midnight Resistance gets a CR strike???
Yeah that makes zero sense. On the plus side I got to use one of my original songs from 20 years ago as a replacement lol.
Poor sega never stood a chance 😢
Mortal Kombat Arcade Edition fixes a lot of the problems of the port
Power of the legendary Motorola 68000
Why Sega combined it with the even more legendary Yamaha YM2612 is beyond any game dev's comprehension at the time.
Is it just me but with a lot of these games, except for extra colours, slightly smother scrolling and better sound on the arcade versions, there is not that much difference.
The Genesis really held its own on a lot of these.
Make snes vs arcade
It's on my list and I think that will be a fun one to do.
Genesis делало для ваших телевизоров всё, что только могла, из последних сил, из последних дорожек на микросхемах. Но вам этого видимо никогда не понять...
Arcade graphics is more detailed and shiny
Genesis es la reina de los ports
born in the 70's rasied in the 80's. i never saw like 75% of these games in the arcade
I'm a little younger (born in the mid 80s, raised in the 90s) and I'm in the same boat as you were I didn't see the majority of these games in the arcade either.
Puyo Puyo is Best!!! AC = GEN
I love Puyo Puyo, it's easily my favorite game in that genre.
Streets of Rage 2 counts. Even though the arcade was Genesis hardware.
I didn't bother with the Mega Tech/Mega Play cabinets since they're not really even a port, just a Genesis game in a cabinet.
@@RetroComparisons Lol. It’s true. But, who ever came up with that idea 👍👍👍.
It’s a cool way to promote a game before bring it home.
@@roldanrosario8292 Oh yeah absolutely! I would have loved it if any of my local pizza places had that when I was a kid.
wow I never knew how good some of the original arcade games were looking. talk about shitty ports huh. let's do a Genesis vs DOS now :D or any console vs DOS to be honest. I really want to see PS1 vs PC now
A ton of these arcade games are fantastic. Lots of good fighters and shooters back then.
Punisher is Pixel Perf ,i mean Pixel Perversion
i had a Atari st it was expensive then i played a friends master system that was 8 bit and the games and graphics blew the Atari st away then i saw the megadrive a virtual arcade at home i had to have one they were just so good !!
Sega was always really pushing technology and it's crazy to think that not only did the Master System look that good in 1986 but also had native RGB output, something even the N64 didn't have 10 years later.
Raiden Trad = bae
Such a great game!
só classicos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
apple arcade games?
That would be funny to do Apple arcade games vs the Apple Pippin if there was any crossover.
your arcade audio quality was dregraded
Genesis does.
What arcade do?
@@RetroComparisonsBelieve it or not, I think piracy actually helped the PS1 become king due to adoption everywhere.
@@believein1 I think you're right that it was a factor in their initial success.
First: Sega never won any console generation. It was 49.1 million versus 30.75 million
Secon: Sega got paranoid and designed the Saturn to combat Jaguar.
The game is made for an emulator of a console that doesn't exist they called the "Mark V"
virtual fighter didnt fair well on the genesis
I'm surprised it even got a release in general. I'm always fascinated by de-makes like that one even if they're not always great.
No wonder why arcades started to die in the 90’s
please index by game name
Unfortunately youtube has a 100 chapter limit so I'm unable to index by each individual game.
They are in alphabetical order so finding the game you want shouldn't be too hard
Arcade>sega gen/megadrive
Y todavía hay quien dice que SNES es mejor.
Genesis Blast Processing
Batman Forever was missing.
That's a different game altogether. Batman Forever: The Arcade Game came out on the Saturn & PS1.
Not the same nightmare as the console version. How do I use the grappling hook again. Oh wait I can’t.
@@AngryCalvin Lol! I remember getting stuck on that as a kid and it being one of the worst rentals ever.
OK Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat is the wrong way around.
I can confirm these are correct with the Genesis version on the right for all games including Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat.
@@RetroComparisons I'm surprised to see a higher colour depth on the Mega Drive, but then it's an old arcade game.
@@ribenasquash Yeah it is quite a difference from what you'd normally see in a Genesis game. I'm not sure why that never got released because I thought it was a really fun game that picked up where Super Off Road left off.
@@RetroComparisons so I see. Super Off Road has a sequel - I never realised! I must try it.
@@ribenasquash I'm not sure if it's a true sequel or a spiritual successor but either way it's a lot of fun.
Sorry but arcade is better
Most of the time. A few on this video seem better on Mega Drive. The vast majority seem better on the arcade, though. 😅
both are ugly
i dont know why sega was ridiculously OVERRATED in US market
