  • What is the number one thing I wish I would have known about nursing school before I started............
Nursing school is rough, and if I would have known the thing I talk about in the video, I think it would have made it a little bit better.

That it's more than ""How to give an injection..." or "How to take blood pressure..." It seems naive now, but I had no idea nurses had to know meds as thorougly as we do. I'm an attorney licensed in California, which is considered the most difficult bar exam in the nation. It wasn't as hard as my nursing tests. 23 chapters in a month. Sometimes I think I'm being pranked. I expect Ashton Kutcher to pop out and say "Man, did you really think you had to do that much work? It's not humanly possible!" But that hasn't happened, and I have a year left, so I guess it's not going to. The sheer volume of material and the level of drug knowledge required are things I wish I knew prior to starting. But I still would have given it my best shot...

Senior nursing student here. I wish someone had told me it's normal to cry and consider dropping out. Took me a long time to realize this was a normal part of the process.

one thing that has really helped me so far is that I study two subjects per day and focus only on those. Trying to cram all those subjects all of your time really stresses you out. By doing this I am able to organize my time and shift on two correlating subjects e.g I studied for my skills and fundamentals one day while I studied patho and Pharm on another. This helped me really see connections clearly and understand them faster where I had time to come back and review them once or even twice! Hope this helps someone. Best of Luck!

Nursing school is a love/hate relationship. I LOVE learning, but I hate that I have no time to do anything, but study and work on projects. The instructors throw LOTS of content on you all at once.
Advice? When you study use a variety of approaches. This includes writing things out, drawing pictures, creating concept maps, reading, watching videos (Nurse Sarah is the best)! Look for a variety of ways to get the content you struggle with into your brain.
    Good luck!

You hit the nail on the head! I was given similar advice (and warning 😂) yet I still did it! I was at a grocery store in my scrubs and a high school aged girl asked me how hard Nursing school is. My boyfriend said I was too negative telling her about it, but boy I was told the same thing and it didn’t matter! Lmao. If you want it bad enough, you’ll walk through fire to get your RN. It weeds out the people who do it for the wrong reasons.

Nursing is like no other degree you'll ever obtain, I have a BA in Psychology but going back to school for a ADN in Nursing was grueling. Its exhausting and draining but it's not impossible especially if you have great classmates. Like my first year professor said "get organized". I work fulltime and go to school fulltime and it is all worth im in my final six weeks and when i see that final grade that shows me passing im going to cry its been two years of 5 hours of sleep a day, 4 hours of driving to work, school and home, 100+ in tolls and gas but I never wanted something so much before in my life! #fall2018

I’m currently going through this RIGHT NOW! I feel like I have zero time for everything. I’m a wife and mom of four. Thankfully my husband is VERY supportive and realizes this is only temporary. He motivates me to study and pushes me out the door to go to the school library and takes care of the house and kids while I’m in school. I also work weekend status. So it’s go go go during the week and work all weekend.
One thing I wish I would’ve done before nursing school would be to take every single prerequisite I needed so that I could focus solely on nursing school classes. I had to take nutrition, abnormal psych, and both chemistry classes during nursing school and it was rough! So that’s my best advice to anyone going to nursing school.
    Love your channel! ❤️

Oh my gosh Selena! I’m in the same boat as you in 2020, I done all my pereqs, switching to part-time CNA on the weekends. My husband very supportive too , you inspired me when you wrote about yourself. Good luck in your career.

In nursing school right now! I was the same way! I knew it was going to be hard, and I knew it was going to take a lot of my time, but I had no idea HOW MUCH TIME. I commute to school 45 minutes by car, go to school, sometimes stay after for group study, go home (over an hour because traffic), read, eat, homework, then sleep, the wake up and repeat. I was also never organized before nursing school! I now have a giant planner, different colored pens, and my month AND weeks are organized by color and planned out. I know I’ll make it, and everyone says it goes fast, but damn what a change! Thankfully I have a super supportive husband that helps keep me sane!

I honestly feel that your video is the most accurate description, however i would add that no matter what field of nursing you go into, nursing school gives you the bare minimum. You learn everything on the job. And honestly, you never stop learning. I've been out of school almost a year and I am still looking things up and setting aside time each day im off to look over things I have encountered.

I wish I had done more journaling when it came to my earliest clinical experiences. It would have been nice to look back and see how much I’ve learned and how I used to think. Plus, writing notes about things you’ve encountered in clinical will give you good anecdotes for your job interviews. Thank you Nurse Sarah for all the great videos. I have watched them since I was taking my prerequisite courses and they got me so excited about nursing.

I wish that while I was taking A&P 1 & 2 I would have created all my concept maps then! I would know everything better and saved myself a boatload of time!

I wish I had known what nursing involved before I started. I thought it would be fun and easy but having to know so much so fast makes me want to cry and I can't believe how much I'm learning and it's just overwhelming and I'm not regretting it but I was not ready for it at all. I do love your shows. You are my Med Surg savior.

Sleep? forget about that when you are in nursing school. And prepare yourself to cry once a week and gain 10 pounds in one semester. I hope this is worth it. But thank you for all the encouragement and experiences. All of our upper class mates love you and recomend our first semester class to watch your videos and resources❤

In nursing school you have to schedule your life around your nursing schedule 😅 not the other way around. There will be times where you even forget to eat because you’re so busy if you have a small break the only thing in your mind will be a nap.

I made a rule for myself that Wednesday the books close at 8pm. I work evenings so Tuesday I work 2-10 (2-11/12 lets be real), wake up at 5-6am on Wednesdays, spend the whole day in class and then work 2-6. I have clinicals on Thursday and Friday so, again, waking up at 4-5am. My boyfriend and I cuddle up on the couch and watch an episode or two of whatever show we're on at the time (Currently Brooklyn nine-nine!). I found that it keeps me from getting burned out and helps me feel more refreshed and focused for clinical the next day. It also prevents a total mental shut down later in the week where my ADD just goes haywire and I waste an entire DAY because I'm unable to focus.

I agree with you totally, I feel the same way. I have no life :( I am in my fourth semester of school, one more semester to go and I can't wait. It is hard and they give you a lot of busy work. I have a great group of classmates that I learn a lot from them and they learn from me. If I had to do it again I would have gotten my RN, then BSN, but I chose to get my LPN, now working on my BSN, RN. I love being a nurse and would not give anything for it. Your videos are great and I watch them all the time and use the information from them. It helps me out a lot. Thanks for all you do :)

I had same experience over here during my diploma n pbbsc nursing. Nursing is not an easy job as other ppl think. In my 3rd year I literally was going to faint in the o.t while scrubbing cause of exhaustion n lack of sleep.

You should mention that in your first semester, before clinicals start, there is no time for leisure. Between the 4-6 50-100 page chapters you need to learn every week, plus extra projects and labs, you wont have time for it.
Personally, I would be a step ahead if I didn't take my prereqs with the mindset of just getting the grade(especially A&P and medical terminology)
    I'm so far behind...=(

What is your take on nurses and social media. Often hospitals do not like their staff participating in social media. But we are human and have lives. Not everything is about work. I’d love your take on this. My nursing school stresses that we leave the social media alone.

I wish I knew how expensive it would be. I had to stop working altogether in my accelerated program and by the time I am done next year, all my life savings (8 years worth) will be gone and i'll be $26,000 in debt. The good thing is that sometimes the ONLY thing that keeps me going is the thought of all the time and MONEY I've invested going down the drain if I were to drop out. I've never been so motivated.
