"If you find yourself constantly escaping from reality, then you need to work hard to create a reality you don't want to escape from." This really spoke to me. I find myself constantly wanting to check my phone if I'm frustrated or unsure what to do next in the day. I think I'm doing better by having a to-do list that I complete throughout the week but I still struggle to hold myself accountable. Here's to creating a better reality.
I never write a "to-do list". Instead, I mix up the words to make it less like a chore and more like something that's even more important and fun. I write a "success plan". Start writing "success plans" and you'll notice that you will start to take action sooner and procrastinate less. :) Who wants a "have to do" list when you can have a PLAN for Success? Sounds better right? Same thing applies with schooling and work life. Instead of saying "I have to study" say "I get to study". Reality is, if you live in a technologically advanced world, you are lucky. Not everyone does and it's easy to forget that. Try to be more grateful and you'll realize even though you are not where you want to be you are somewhere other people dream to be...

A bit extreme, but I just keep my phone tucked away in my closet for about 90% of the day on most days. My desire to engage with technology is quite low (even though I have a tech background and have been on the other side of the algorithm) because it’s a vortex in which time disappears, guilt arises, headaches form, and overall it’s never as satisfying to use in the first place. It is actually quite satisfying and enjoyable to just be bored. In my opinion, boredom breeds creativity. Boredom (while intentionally keeping the phone away) allows me to seek joy from other sources, such as cooking, admiring nature, drawing, nature walks, etc. it allows me to be “free” in a busy, noisy, over stimulating world. boredom with the phone in hand, on the other hand is a different story. Anyways, just keep the damn phone in a drawer somewhere, and go live life everyone 🙃 there is much fun to be had. If anyone here is a 90’s kid, you know we had our ways of having fun “back in the day” without all the technology stuff

You're not wrong. With quarantine and not being able to do whatever else I did before this pandemic, when I am not working, I spend nearly 90% of my day on my computer or phone. I found myself scrolling/consuming whatever I could on socials during my free time. Decided I needed to stop and went cold turkey. I am on day nine of no social media (besides the occasional YT video.) I have found doing other things and staying off my phone, interesting. It was hard at first. Asking myself, what should/can/could I do? Now, I have a long list of things I want to do and plan to do. But at the start, sitting with that anxiety and discomfort you talk about, I felt that and am still feeling it. The boredom and almost feeling like I could be and should be doing something else. Great video. “Social media steels your time” Meaning, all this time wasted is distracting you from the real you. Your life in real world!!! Cause time is the only unit that has not negative value. Lost time is that, lost for good. No recovery, no going back. Keep it up!!!
“You need to work really hard to create a reality you don’t want to escape from”. This is big because it implies being intentional with your daily life. Like the video says I think intentionality is key here. To not allow ourselves to get into that “doomscrolling” habit where we’re just on social media because we’re bored. That takes being mindful like the video says. Between 2019 and 2020 I had to spend a lot of time being more mindful of my thoughts than the average because I nearly died and was suffering from some PTSD from the experience. Being aware of my thoughts helped me climb out of that dark place mentally. The exercise of doing those mental checks dailiy has helped during the pandemic to help me limit my time on social media. I don’t always get it right but being mindful makes a huge difference. And I second the recommendation of reading Digital Miniminalism. Such a great read!
"If you find yourself constantly escaping your reality, then you need to work really hard to create a reality you don’t want to escape from." - I loved this
I have clicked on the like button a few seconds before you told :) The problem it's not just the algorithm of every site on the Internet which tries to keep us as much as possible in the net, it's also our lack of privacy. Most people are not conscious about how much information we give (voluntary and free!) when we use an app, when we visit a site... So people need to be aware of two facts: the time they spent in the Internet and the data they are giving. I hope I have explained myself correctly, sometimes it's difficult to express what it is inside and specially in a language that it's not my native language. Loved the video. Greetings from Spain.
“if you find yourself constantly escaping from reality, then you need to work really hard to create a reality you don’t want to escape from” best line in this video
Me: „Today i‘m going to be productive!“ Bald Head: „Hey, look at this notification, about why this notification and algorythm is ruining your life.“ Me: „Sounds great!“
I had such FOMO after I dipped out on FB 5-6 yrs ago but it was the best thing I ever did. I chose to focus on real-life instead of reel life...highly recommend it.
It's funny that im here after having disabled all my social medias for a week now. At first everytime i went into the bathroom or was eating or laying down I'd go to the front page of my fone and click on instagram, twitter, all that stuff. Then i realize i had uninstalled them and would do something else. The results were not impressive but satisfying, i started to focus a little more on my university stuff and i saw myself having more time for everything, i could play a game that i like for a little bit, do work, workout, and at the end of the day I'd feel way better because i was not in a rush for any of that
I needed this video right now. Yesterday my phone screen time was 14 hours, because I couldn’t control myself from phone. My morning usually starts from reading a book and having a good cup of tea away from my phone, but yesterday I understood how it got me again.. Couldn’t accomplish anything..
GUYSSS!!! I use the app 1Focus to block all of my social media on my Mac and it's great! For youtube (I can't block it since I need it for school) I use the ''remove recommendations'' chrome extension, that way those colorful thumbnails won't distract me, you can also hide comments, home recommendations, and right recommendations. Setting timers for each task is super helpful as well. Reminding myself of how bad I feel about myself when I get nothing done helps too. Good luck!!!! I believe in you! Don't let social media steal your time! Go live!
I love this video, it helped me acknowledge how the algorithm keeps me in a rabbit hole of watching content instead of producing them knowing full well that I'm self conscious about only having 17 Subscribers
I found your channel while I was on vacation and I thought "I'll stop doing social media things!" then I realized that since I was on vacation I had literally nothing else to do with my time
I think conscious behavior is important for most actions. ✨ Whether it’s binging on TV shows or overeating or even day dreaming! The solution is to get disciplined about being conscious and recognize when the behavior is likely to cause harm. Thanks for sharing this topic and your thoughts 👍🏽
Yes! We need to be conscious of our behaviour and how these things work! I also try to control my social media usa with blocking apps (10/10 recommend) so I'm not so tempted all the time. It's hard to be disciplined all the time so having that little help has been good for me.
2:57 inner locus of control. *Reclaim your power* To break out of the algorithmically controlled life: Remove yourself from the external noise, gain insight into your ownself, try things out and see what works for you. *Check in with yourself regularly* 7:19 instead of using Social media to escape your "boring" life, embrace your life. *Create a reality/ life you wouldn't need to escape from* 7:03 *work on your relationship with yourself* so you don't need to rely on technology to distract you from yourself. Well Ig it gives the consumers the content that they are interested in and look forward too instead of throwing random videos/posts. So the person would enjoy that!
I've found genuinely interesting channels thanks to RUclips's algorithm with videos that - I feel like - improve my life to a certain extent. It's a bit of symbiotic relationship in that regard. They get to analyze my viewing behaviors and interests and serve me relevant ads (as long as I don't block them) and I get a quick and easy way to access relevant information.
No one is stealing your time, it is a choice in the moment. When consuming so much it is becoming a problem in your normal life, then it needs to be managed.
I literally had this same realization the other night after watching a very sad video in my RUclips recommended. It really got me to think about how invasive RUclips is (and any other social media that points their super computer algorithm at our brains) knew that showing me that particular video would influence as heavily as it did. CRAZY times we live in.
I have trouble with the internet because, I have to use it for my study, but at the same time it is super distracting. You can't just shut off a part of the internet by yourself. It comes down to not looking and that is hard if you are doing something that is boring. I get distracted just by sitting behind the PC, whatever I do, since it always reminds me of a serie, a youtube channel or something else online. It's getting out of hand >.
There are some browser extensions (leechblock), some study / work methods (pomodoro technique) some concepts (time blocking) that have helped me in the past and that can help with this. I'm trying to reimplement them into my life now as they were definitely useful back then. Don't be harsh with yourself when you have setbacks (when, not if, as there will be some, smaller or bigger), life is a marathon and not a sprint and even one year is nothing compared to the 40/50/60/70 that you'll live after the current one.
Also, ultimately everything is an habit. For example now I have the habit of going to youtube as soon as I sit in front of the PC, which I'm slowly trying to transform into the habit of doing relevant work as soon as I sit in front of the PC, no matter how much work I'll do then (two minutes are enough!). zen habits (from Leo Babauta) has one book about how to build habits that's quite on point and really nice.
I’ve had time restrictions on my social media apps for a few months now. It cut my Instagram time from 2-4 hours to 5-10 minutes a day. RUclips from 8-10 hours to 8-10 hours. Okay RUclips is my crack I can’t stop
So one thing I do and really get positive results with is breathing conciously. 15 minutes twice a day. But dont press yourself into something you have to do! When i feel bad (thats very often) i feel it in my stomach. Maybe you know this...When i do the breathing, i try not to make pauses between breathing in and out. And then you do nothing else but concentrate on the bad feeling in your body, wherever it may be. you dont think about the reasons why you feel bad or about solutions to this. You just focus on the body part. In my case its only the stomach. If you do this, you do the opssite of escaping, you dont avoid feeling. And I think thats the most important thing in modern society. You easily avoid the needs of youself. If you feel bad, you just watch a series, netflix, instagram whatever. Only to avoid your bad feelings about yourself. That is doing more harm to you in the long term. I still fight with myself very hard over this. But I came to a point, when I started to like these breathing pauses (in the beginning, its very very hard). Its some "me time". And over time I started to feel better in general. Hope youre all fine. Much love from germany.
I suggest taking up a hobby like crafting, knitting or something along those lines. I am into larp and while I can't go to any conventions at the moment, I take the time to sew and embroyder and not only is it creative and productive, it even takes my mind off things and is kinda like meditating, because you're so focused on the thing and most movements are repetetive. Even doodling does that. and that's something everybody can do. It doesn't have to look good, it's about doing it at all. I personally think, I haven't really been bored for years.
"As entrepreneurs, we must constantly dream and have the conviction and obsession to transform our dreams into reality - to create a future that never existed before."
What I learned is that: to become a person who can control his behaviour. Be okay with being bored like no to social media and instead do the traditional entertaining thing like playing basketball or etc. (Things that don't involve social medias or digital things) Also use the social media in a limited way.
Thank god for spreading this kind of message! Self responsibility! My perception of our culture is that of entitled victims. I live in New England, every winter, ice happens, although we should do something about it, it’s also up to people to remember, it’s f-ing cold out, I better watch my step. Same here in your virtual concept. There is so much, free, instant access to information. I try to use it to be my best me, as independent, responsible, altruistic as I can be today. I think the age of frivolous lawsuits made there scare on culture and right after that media and advertising pounding away the message “you deserve “ . I stopped watching cable 15 years ago, back then in one commercial break it would be said 2-3 times in different commercials. This got my sub click.
Recently i tried to use this approach when you set limits on your apps. But bro, when you have this button like "Do you want to turn off time limits?" It is indeed complex to decide correctly and just stop using your smartphone. More over , sometimes you very need to check your messages for instance and you have to switch it to offed one because you have just spent all the time by checking unneeded data
I love listening to you. You´re so very good at explaining things in a simple yet precise way. Even though I know why some stuff really are not doing me any good (like spending countless of hours online) it´s so much easier to really make sense of it while listening to you. Thank you for constantly making me think about and question my daily choices and also for making me laugh out loud often!!
I think youtube has become such a big thing in my life that I don't even know what I wanna do or what I like doing apart from watching random videos on youtube. Sometimes I spend hours and hours here just to find that one useful video that makes me think I didn't waste my whole day on random videos instead of learning something I really want to learn, but I say I don't have enough time
Man speaking from his heart . so genuine not just try to get his content out there but instead he's spreading awarness and most kindest possible way . a typical Canadian always.
I got inspired by Nathaniel and the the 'literal human egg' (sorry Joey 🤣) to get off social media for 30 days in January, and added 30 days of yoga to that. It was tempting to go back sometimes because of lockdown, as I felt leaving social media was disconnecting me from my friends even further. But I texted them and said I would look at all the memes and stuff they sent me in February. I reinstalled the apps yesterday and after awhile of catching up, I didn't miss using the apps that much anymore. I still get carried away and get distracted sometimes but I noticed the impulse of checking notifications and scrolling diminished a lot! I am even tempted to repeat this again for a month starting in a couple of days, it really contributed to feel more in control of my time :) Ps. if you don't want to go cold turkey on this, I recommend installing some google extension that blocks youtube recommendations and blocks social media newsfeed. That way you are not bombarded with new information and just check what you really want to. :)
Thank you for the good content, I can really relate to this. In fact I have blocked youtube entirely for a few days. But sometimes i just need to inform myself about an ongoing topic or need to watch some interview/talk for university. I´m still figuring out how to find the right balance, but here are a few less radical steps that helped: time-limit on my macbook, having separate youtube accounts for education/entertainment, only using youtube on one "entertainment-device", not going to the start-page but only to the subscriptions-page.
One side of the fence: some of the smartest people in the world training algorithms to continuously improve the accuracy of the output On the other side: simple humanoids who saw a Better Ideas thumbnail and clicked fast In all honesty, until these behemoth tech companies are disincentived from collecting every morsel of data possible then we stand no chance 😌
1. Realise you're the one in control of your actions. - Take a level of ownership over your decisions and how you're spending your time. 2. Acknowledge that you're prone to getting distracted and try to create friction. Make social media less accessible. 3. Take out a pen and paper try to think how you'd ideally like to spend your day. Measure how much and when you want to spend time on social media. 4. Use app timers. 5. If you use sm as an escape from reality, create a new reality that you are not likely to want to escape from. 6. 6:50 to 7:12 7. Have a boring day. No information consumption. Live in that fomo, that anxiety, that loneliness and that discomfort. 8. Journal your concerns and your gameplan. 9. Go outside. Exercise! 10. Be aware that these apps are profiting greatly by your attention and your time.
Social Media kills your attention span. The fast moving TV Ads are the original culprits. With subliminal content for years on, they have paralysed human creativity and made the masses slaves to brand content, messaging, gimmicks etc. SM is carrying the baton forward on a more personalized level. Human creativity that's stuck in a rut can only come out or manifest when we are with ourselves, people & nature. Talk, write, read, to focus more, do more & create more & consume less.
I quit social media (except youtube and occasionally reddit lol) midway through lockdown and have felt less lonely since then. In my free time, I now spend more time on hobbies and projects that make me happy or at least give me a sense of accomplishment. Scrolling and posting was more stressful than I even realized at the time. I think if I ever go back and fall into old habits it'll be easier to quit since I'm less attached to it now. Also, fully deleting your primary accounts (after downloading all the data and pictures and things) is so freeing. You don't need your identity to be some static thing that is publicly available for everyone to judge.
"If you find yourself constantly escaping from reality, then you need to work really hard to create a reality that you don't want to escape from" - love that dude

Absolutely true, the social media algorithm just keeps us busy with nothing.
The algorithm recommended to me this video about why the algorithm is bad 😂
It's clearly getting way too cocky.

I think it's because you are probably subscribed to this channel.
Thanks for making this video. You're such a realist and I appreciate your help

The problem it's not just the algorithm of every site on the Internet which tries to keep us as much as possible in the net, it's also our lack of privacy.

Dude, i thank the algorithm for recommending this video and thank u much more, keep this great work up!
Whether it’s binging on TV shows or overeating or even day dreaming!

Does anyone ever defend algorithms? The contrarian in me wonders what those arguments would be like.
Probably their arguments are the algorithm gives me what interesses in and makes me happy so it's good.
The core issue is TOO MUCH...the excess of things are what ruin it...
do it
I really like the way he explains reasons why "big tech" loves us getting addicted to our phones. Thanks for the insight!!!
No one is stealing your time, it is a choice in the moment. When consuming so much it is becoming a problem in your normal life, then it needs to be managed.
Thank you algorithm, you made something good, you put Better Ideas channel on my recomended.
How to roast Cody Ko in a god honoring way
"We are not the customer we are the product" hit me like a brick wall.
"If you find yourself constantly escaping from reality, work really hard to create a reality you don't want to escape from."
“I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” -Mark Twain
Nice, a discussion with a literal human egg, I love that guy!
Thank you for this video, I quit social media for 30 days and it was great but now I've got the apps back I find myself scrolling mindlessly again !

(Things that don't involve social medias or digital things)
Also use the social media in a limited way.

The algorithm has just saved me with this.

I am even tempted to repeat this again for a month starting in a couple of days, it really contributed to feel more in control of my time :)
Ps. if you don't want to go cold turkey on this, I recommend installing some google extension that blocks youtube recommendations and blocks social media newsfeed. That way you are not bombarded with new information and just check what you really want to. :)

Mindfulness > Algorithm Indulgences🙂
Thank you for the good content, I can really relate to this. In fact I have blocked youtube entirely for a few days. But sometimes i just need to inform myself about an ongoing topic or need to watch some interview/talk for university. I´m still figuring out how to find the right balance, but here are a few less radical steps that helped: time-limit on my macbook, having separate youtube accounts for education/entertainment, only using youtube on one "entertainment-device", not going to the start-page but only to the subscriptions-page.

6. 6:50 to 7:12
7. Have a boring day. No information consumption. Live in that fomo, that anxiety, that loneliness and that discomfort.
8. Journal your concerns and your gameplan.
9. Go outside. Exercise!
10. Be aware that these apps are profiting greatly by your attention and your time.
i wish this guy did hot ones but instead of having celebrities he'd interview people with strong internet addictions and help them
Social Media kills your attention span.

For me, outright quitting social media was the best thing I ever did, so I think at the very least trying it out is key
lol I found you from codys video
I quit social media (except youtube and occasionally reddit lol) midway through lockdown and have felt less lonely since then. In my free time, I now spend more time on hobbies and projects that make me happy or at least give me a sense of accomplishment. Scrolling and posting was more stressful than I even realized at the time. I think if I ever go back and fall into old habits it'll be easier to quit since I'm less attached to it now.
Also, fully deleting your primary accounts (after downloading all the data and pictures and things) is so freeing. You don't need your identity to be some static thing that is publicly available for everyone to judge.
