I'd say it's a premise of life in Finland that you can trust people to always do the right and correct thing, like buy their train ticket before boarding. Why would someone not do that? Of course, there are some people like that, and they'll be promptly fined and kicked off the train (at the next station... ;), but in general Finns can be trusted to do the right thing. It makes for an uncomplicated life, happy life. Things just work

Karjalanpiirakka is nowadays usually filled with rice but not traditionally. My ancestors were making those before they had seen or tasted rice. My great grandmother and her family in Karelia used rutabaga because that's what they had. Also the egg butter isn't really a filling, more of a topping. My grandparents also were from Karelia and my great grandmother told me that rice was used as long she could remember, she was born 1880. Rice was kinda expensive and used for "nicer" occasions. Barley, potato mash etc. were cheaper fillings. So rice filling is for sure traditional.

So that was fun, jumping down from the train, trekking in the snow and then climbing back in. 🤣 I live in Finland.
i really like that you travel outside helsinki, it seens that everyone who travels to finland just stays in the capital, while northern finalnd has a lot to offer aswell.

I'm Finnish and I've never experiences the sleeper train haha. But I have taken the train plenty of times and never had any issues with the doors, I felt so bad for you when you couldn't get out 😂

I am Finnish and the train is really cool. I went only once to the Vr train couple years ago expect i wasn't overnight and there was a playground for kids and some random kid came up to me and gave me a necklace, i still have it to this day haha..memories. :)
That train door thing happened to me once too! It was so cold the door was apparently frozen shut since it didn't open like it normally would. And I should know how you open it because I've traveled numerous times in these Finnish trains. Actually had a panic attack after that lol.
Egg-butter is traditional topping put on a karelian pie. But you can use pretty much any toppings you want or none at all. You can also eat it cold or warm (they are easy and fast to heat in microwave).

I used to make the ROI-HKI-trip in an over night train with a seat. Students, prices, you know the deal... Glad you enjoyed it. And as you've probably been told before, just be prepared to move to the next door, the new(ish) trains are notoriously bad in the cold, in the heat and in between.

Finns (like me) don’t use those sleeping cabins/private cabins because they are really expensive. From Helsinki to the north by train in the sleeping cabin usually costs about 120e and if you go by plane it costs 40e if you get lucky.
That is what we have heard! We decided to do the train because it saves us money by not needing to get an accommodation for the night. Flying seemed very convenient as well!

When I was a kid I got to ride in those sleep cabins a lot. Regular trips to my grandparents in Lapland were so much fun, getting to sleep in the upper bunk etc. And definately agree on the movement of the train. It is sleep medicine.
I use them. Nothing beats the convenience of sleeping while you travel, especially when the timing works so you can eat dinner and breakfast on the train. You can even get beer until 3 am or smth depending on Covid restrictions.
The overnight trains are not high speed. They run at max 140 km/h, typically at 120 km/h or so. The daytime trains have a top speed of 200 km/h, 220 km/h at the newest short Lahti-Kerava section.

lmao the reason the door didn't open was because you weren't pressing the door opening button (those small ones over the button you pressed, the other one is to close) but the button to put down a wheelchair ramp, which obviously was not doing anything because the door wasn't open XD sooo that was on you for not pressing the other buttons
I am obsessed with trains, so naturally, I had to watch this video from start to finish! We watched your videos on Peru too and they were very influential for planning our most recent trip. We ended up taking the Hiram Bingham train to Aguas Calientes and Inca Rail back (because it was too expensive to take the luxury train both ways: it was $500/ticket/way). It was an incredible train ride through the Sacred Valley! But my husband remarked on the way back, "what was the difference between trains?" because Inca Rail's coach class was also incredibly nice! Still, it's not fair he made that comment. The Hiram Bingham train came with tickets to the park, a guide, high tea at the Sanctuary Lodge, live music, 5 course meal, all you can drink open bar. We did fall asleep by accident on both trains so maybe we shouldn't have spent so much money. Still, those were the most thrilling train rides of our lives! You both have a great attitude about missing your stop. We love your positiive energy!

I've been wanting to do the Amtrak Coast-to-Coast for quite a while, global pandemics and life situations have plans at a standstill - plus trying to decide which route to take...maybe all of them. Feel bad for you guys for not getting out of the train, that really sucks. I've been in a similar situation years ago with VR's trains where I kept smashing the button over and over again, yet the doors didn't open and when I already started to panic someone else walked next to me, pressed the button once and the doors opened like nothing. Looking forward for the next part of your trip though!
Looks so nice and makes me want to travel that way too. I've done it when I was a kid. I have sleeping problems so the rocking sounds so good. Should probably just go there to sleep. 😄
Doors not opening is kind of normal thing during winter and there are usually not much personel in the sleeping area. You can move to normal area and exit there, but there may be some kind of alarms there, but they are silent, so I recommend doing that.
Did you notice on the Spanish trains that they often don't check your ticket until you are on the train too? That's been our experience at least. We lived in Madrid last year and noticed that the high speed AVE trains now have security checks before you board (scanners for your luggage like in the airports), but the security line is very fast. You can also pay 15 euros more to buy the seat next to you, so you don't have to sit next to a stranger during Covid. We think the Spanish eventually implemented security because of the 11th of March 2004 attacks. I was studying in Madrid when those happened, so I understand the increased security.
Hopefully one day Chad and Claire can visit my country Malaysia, I can suggest you two to visit Langkawi, Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Mount Kinabalu, Tioman Island, Mulu National Park and Penang. This are the most famous tourist attractions in Malaysia. Malaysia is very cheap country to travel if currency with USD. I also suggest you two to visit Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi with watches Northern Light.

Unfortunately you were pushing the wrong button to open the door. The right button can be see in the video above the button you were pushing (the blue arrow). You were actually pushing the button to extend the wheelchair ramp. Really bad luck there were no other people in the train with you.

The restaurant/cafe car at 2:54 was the classic 1980s type Rx. The "push" symbol on the handle of the door has a hand with 6 fingers..! The newer cars have a much poorer design and layout I think. These older ones will be going out sooner than later.
Oo those look really nice actually! We unfotranetly couldnt go in them when we had our overnight train since there were three of us (plus a dog) so it would've cost too much. But the pet cart was also comfortable with very little people, I slept for the first trip but on the way back I just stayed up for the 11 hours so others could sleep :D Overnight trains are very fun
Yea i have had same problems with doors. Once i went out to have smoke becouse it was like 10min stop. I smoked in under 5min but the doors just didnt open, so all my stuff (bags, wallet etc) except my phone luckily. I had to take next train to helsinki, but i got my stuff only arter 2 days for some reason! Otherwise always good experiense with VR

One of the most authentic anecdotes in the Finnish language is:"Works like a toilet on a train" (Toimii kuin junan vessa). You use it when something goes/operates particularly well, even exceeding your expectations. I have no idea where the saying has originated as the toilets on at least the older trains did not always work all that well. Well, at least the saying isn't about train doors, right?
It originates from way back when the toilets on the trains were literally just a toilet seat with a hole in the floor and everything was dumped straight on to the tracks. As there were no moving parts, nothing could ever go wrong with them, hence the saying.
@@jpsuominen This I knew, and have used those also in person being the old man that I am, but sometimes the flap closing the hole was also stuck and the toilet got clogged - so being simple did not make them flawless. But I'm sure you're right in stating that the simplicity was the reasoning for the saying.
I feel really bad for you that the door wouldn’t open because it will leave a bitter memory of VR in the future. I have to say it’s very odd that it wouldn’t open and I think also very rare because that hasn’t happened to me before.I hope that you guys weren’t too inconvenienced by that. They kept on pressing a wrong button. A bit to the right you can see the correct one, two on top of each other. The one they were pressing calls for help someone with a wheelchair, but you need to inform the workers beforehand, otherwise they won't have time to reach you.
How hard did you press the button? You do have to press quite hard for the doors to open. And I actually prefer to get on and off where there are more people. Because a similar incident happened to me as I was trying to get on the train once.

The Karjalanpiirakka doesn't have eggbutter in it, you're supposed to heat it up and put eggbutter on it. But of course you can eat them as is.

We fins use butter on top of karjalanpiirakka. Before that we warm it litlepit in microwave.

I used to add some butter,ham and cheese on karjalanpiirakka and around 30 sec in the microwave.And we have a fast breakfast with some coffee🙂

Doors not opening is kind of normal thing during winter and there are usually not much personel in the sleeping area. You can move to normal area and exit there, but there may be some kind of alarms there, but they are silent, so I recommend doing that.

Finnish trains are so classy...like the country....
Did you notice on the Spanish trains that they often don't check your ticket until you are on the train too? That's been our experience at least. We lived in Madrid last year and noticed that the high speed AVE trains now have security checks before you board (scanners for your luggage like in the airports), but the security line is very fast. You can also pay 15 euros more to buy the seat next to you, so you don't have to sit next to a stranger during Covid. We think the Spanish eventually implemented security because of the 11th of March 2004 attacks. I was studying in Madrid when those happened, so I understand the increased security.
Hopefully one day Chad and Claire can visit my country Malaysia, I can suggest you two to visit Langkawi, Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Mount Kinabalu, Tioman Island, Mulu National Park and Penang. This are the most famous tourist attractions in Malaysia. Malaysia is very cheap country to travel if currency with USD. I also suggest you two to visit Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi with watches Northern Light.
Ah! We can't wait to visit one day! We will keep an eye on flights and watch for when Malaysia opens up one day.

Unfortunately you were pushing the wrong button to open the door. The right button can be see in the video above the button you were pushing (the blue arrow). You were actually pushing the button to extend the wheelchair ramp. Really bad luck there were no other people in the train with you.
We feel so bad for you... but didn't quite understand why the doors would not open? Stay safe, cheers.

You accidentally crossed the polar circle on the train! I think it is a kind of compensation for the broken door in Rovaniemi :)

The restaurant/cafe car at 2:54 was the classic 1980s type Rx. The "push" symbol on the handle of the door has a hand with 6 fingers..!
The newer cars have a much poorer design and layout I think. These older ones will be going out sooner than later.

Oo those look really nice actually! We unfotranetly couldnt go in them when we had our overnight train since there were three of us (plus a dog) so it would've cost too much.
But the pet cart was also comfortable with very little people, I slept for the first trip but on the way back I just stayed up for the 11 hours so others could sleep :D

Yea i have had same problems with doors. Once i went out to have smoke becouse it was like 10min stop. I smoked in under 5min but the doors just didnt open, so all my stuff (bags, wallet etc) except my phone luckily. I had to take next train to helsinki, but i got my stuff only arter 2 days for some reason! Otherwise always good experiense with VR
So how did you finally open the door? We will be traveling on that train soon with 2 kids. I would hate to get stuck on the Train.

One of the most authentic anecdotes in the Finnish language is:"Works like a toilet on a train" (Toimii kuin junan vessa). You use it when something goes/operates particularly well, even exceeding your expectations. I have no idea where the saying has originated as the toilets on at least the older trains did not always work all that well. Well, at least the saying isn't about train doors, right?
It originates from way back when the toilets on the trains were literally just a toilet seat with a hole in the floor and everything was dumped straight on to the tracks. As there were no moving parts, nothing could ever go wrong with them, hence the saying.
@@jpsuominen This I knew, and have used those also in person being the old man that I am, but sometimes the flap closing the hole was also stuck and the toilet got clogged - so being simple did not make them flawless. But I'm sure you're right in stating that the simplicity was the reasoning for the saying.

I feel really bad for you that the door wouldn’t open because it will leave a bitter memory of VR in the future. I have to say it’s very odd that it wouldn’t open and I think also very rare because that hasn’t happened to me before.I hope that you guys weren’t too inconvenienced by that. Also the thing about there being no guards and tickets being checked only once you get on is standard here in Finland. We are a very high trust society and crime rates are incredibly low. Enjoy your time in Lapland!

@@janbo8331 I looked it up and an overnight train with a shower costs €69 from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, that's not too bad. Taking that journey with a car would almost certainly cost more in gas alone
@@emil.soderholm Hmm, interesting. Last time I checked it was that much from Helsinki to Jyväskylä in a normal train/seat. I had to go back and forth because of work, and it was over 50% cheaper to use my car and travel alone.

They kept on pressing a wrong button. A bit to the right you can see the correct one, two on top of each other. The one they were pressing calls for help someone with a wheelchair, but you need to inform the workers beforehand, otherwise they won't have time to reach you.

How hard did you press the button? You do have to press quite hard for the doors to open. And I actually prefer to get on and off where there are more people. Because a similar incident happened to me as I was trying to get on the train once.
