@@ScheffCity context is everything. His 2nd year began with a full tear down of talent. They were designed to be terrible. When you have bad OL, WRs who can’t separate or catch and a defense who gives up 30, it’s hard to look like you figured it out. He improved each year he was in Chicago. That’s hard to do when they are designed to lose. His ceiling may not be MVP, but pretending this kid is a bum is wild. If Lamar was forced to not run and be a pocket passer instead of what happened, would he even have gotten the opportunity? His coaches were smart enough to know how to coach and use him.

Watch his tape, its some of the most painful film you can watch. He consistently turns down throws because he still can't recognize NFL open. He's late on throws all the time, even worse, he knows when he's missed a window and it leads him to panic at the top of his drop. His best game of the year was against the Lions, where the bailouts looked cool. However in reality, Fields was turning down open throws to bail out and make the game harder on himself. The dude is to slow to diagnose at NFL speed. He also has epilepsy, I don't like watching his head bounce off the field every weekend. What else, had a competent Oline last year, 2 and a half legit weapons in Moore, Mooney, and Kmet. Ask yourself, why did Mooney get paid the off season but Fields highest bidder was a 6th rounder? Because he was getting open, Fields could cut the ball loose far to often. 70+ turnovers in 39 games, mostly fumbles which are directly on him. Like 80% of his sacks taken are while holding the ball for more than 4 seconds, that's an eternity in the NFL. And its not because people weren't open. They may have been able to make that excuse in 2022, but in 2023 he failed with a solid offense around him. 5 separate injuries in 3 seasons that required him to miss games. I don't know what you were watching, but Fields ain't the guy. His runs look cool, but he doesn't process fast enough to be an NFL QB. Probably be XFL MVP in a few years. As far as the Bears always finding new ways to screw things up, that comes down to their inability to assemble a competent Oline at any point in the last 30 years. That was not the case last year. Jones is solid, Jenkins was a borderline pro bowler, the center is a revolving door, Whitehair should've started over Davis but Davis was okay, and then Wright was probably the best rookie tackle last year. They've never committed to protecting their QB. They got Cutler and let him get murdered for 3 years before they did anything remotely competent for their line. They overpaid for bad tackles while Trubisky was here. I think that changes going forward. Their GM is a former Olineman, whos not gonna stand for not protecting the QB.

fields was the 4th highest rated passer on throws over 20+ yards last year. the NFL avg for time to throw has always been 2.5 seconds, which is why they track how many times a QB is pressured before 2.5 seconds. the league avg is around 32% of the time a QB is pressured before 2.5 seconds. fields in his three years in chicago was pressured before 2.5 seconds 44%, 42% and 51% of the time. sure fields might struggle with the short quick stuff, but hes always been great at throwing it deep. the bears are just trash, and could never block. but because fields is such an amazing athlete, he would buy time and end up holding on to the ball way longer than most QBs. and casual sports commentators, like shady, who dont even watch the games and they just look at the box scores, been pushing this narrative that fields cant throw at all. which is just not true. Fields to DJ moore led the league in passer rating last year out of any QB/WR combo in the league.

We had hella missed attempts and drops for sure, but that highest rated QB/WR combo is 100% due to YAC not throws on 20+ yards. If that really is the case and I’m just talking out my ass, 1st rated and 8 rated has a difference of less than 3 points so it’s marginal, very marginal.

@@d3vp131 the bears are a franchise ran by cheap owners and inept front office. what about the bears history makes you think they would ever make the right decision when it comes to a QB. its literally one of the oldest teams in the NFL and not only is it the only team to never have a 4000 yard passer. its also the only team to never have a 30 td passer either. the bears doing the wrong thing when it comes to QB is exactly what you should expect from a franchise run by cheap owners with an inept front office. Until the McCaskeys sell the team, the bears will remain a dumpster fire.
and just when it looks like you got someone halfway decent in the front office in poles. he goes and decides to keep a "defensive" coach. the same defensive coach, whose defense blew a 21 point lead, a 13 point lead with less than 4 minutes left, and the following week a 10 point lead midway through the 4th quarter. this also is the same defense that gave up nearly the most YPC on defense. and also the same defense who on 3rd down, got continually torched. which is why jordan love had a perfect 158.3 passer rating vs the bears 3rd down defense last year. and poles goes ahead and keeps this guy. once the bears finish with a disappointing 5 to 7 win season. eberflus will be fired, and williams will be on his 2nd head coach by year two, just like the previous 2 QBs. and the cycle of the bears ruining QBs will remain.

That being said, as a floor he’s way better than what the three stooges offered last year, and Arthur smith will get him dynamically involved in the run game. I’ll always root for Justin as a bears fan but they’re talking like this isn’t what the bears tried to do for 3 years. Trust me, that was the first thought everyone had “ohh he can be like Lamar.” No he can’t. Lamar is a unicorn. Justin doesn’t process as quickly and Justin isn’t as elusive. He also isn’t as fluid with his mechanics and motion…they’re totally different players. If you run Justin, he gets hurt. He doesn’t run away from contact, he runs INTO it, it’s what I love about him the dude is a warrior. But when it comes to playing a 17 game season at QB, that style does not work well, with him at least. He takes SO much punishment and runs out of gas every 4th quarter. Thats when he starts throwing picks, fumbles, mental errors…it was like clockwork, every week..
Having success with Justin will have to include him making significant improvements as a pocket passer and him tightening up his mechanics. He may look amazing for a few games and he’ll definitely give you some highlights…but being a battering ram QB just doesn’t work long term

Dan inadvertently reveals why Brock Purdy has succeeded while Justin Fields has not. Like usual praise for Fields it's all about his athleticism with the little caveat that he's slow with his decisions. Meanwhile Purdy makes five decisions in a split second. Yeah, that decision making? That's the most important skill for an NFL quarterback. Every draft bust has this rap sheet about how he's got a rocket for an arm and crap like that. The guys that succeed are the ones that can make the right decisions quickly as that's how they find the target that's open, call audibles and avoid interceptions. Quick decision making was Tom Brady's greatest skill. But that's a difficult thing to identify in a prospect so football minds are always looking at a guy's physical skillset. This is why Purdy was drafted with the last pick and gets little credit while a guy like Fields keeps getting another chance to meet his potential despite the fact that he's already demonstrated a weakness at what really matters. A quarterback does need to meet certain bare minimum physical skills, like being able to throw accurately over a certain distance. But if they meet that requirement then the priority should be entirely on the analytical side of his game, if that's something that can truly be identified in college. A guy who can throw a football over them mountains but can't read the defense is worthless.

It wasn't always just the O-line or bad receivers like most people say. The same problems continued after the offensive line was upgraded and DJ Moore was brought in. I hope the best for him, but he needs to gain confidence in what he sees and not rely on athleticism to get out of poor decision making. You can't consistently win games on miraculous plays.

They're gonna put a man to see how well he can play and see if he's a real long-term solution. Will definitely try this in precision. And there will be a few games where he'll get in. In order to know for sure, Justin fields is a long-term solution at quarterback. You're gonna have to give him some reps in. Can't necessarily wait for Russell Wilson to be injured. Or you can't necessarily wait till you're up. By like 40 points in a game, you can't depend on that in NFL

But not when he has lead league in touchdown passes average more than 230 yards passing a game last year. He literally set out 3 games worth of time last year and still had over 3600 yards passing. For you to think this you most of only seen two games of his last year. I got nfl ticket I am not ravens fan. But I will say every quarterback I watch last year Lamar Jackson was in the top 8 when came to passing the ball. When his hot in rhythm when it comes to passing the ball I only seen two quarterbacks look better when they are hot when it comes to passing that ball on each phase! Stop it! He can’t read a defense and struggles with coverages and protection slides. He also stares at receivers.
I hope I’m wrong, but I doubt that one year removed from these traits, he’ll be leaps and bounds better
