Just a word of warning about the valve cover bolts - don't torque them down to 12nm; they are lightweight shoulder bolts and bottom out before reaching 12nm. Heaps of folk are snapping them at 12nm, they just need to be snugged down. The service manual suggested torque is far too high.
Valve cover bolts to exact torque while compressing a rubber washer, vs spark plugs exposed to the full pressure of the combustion chamber 'hand tight about right'. All instruction manuals should be read with caution :)
Blowing grit away from the base of the spark plugs was a professional touch!
And marking the parts as they come off was *better* than professional!
Give your bike in a Garage they will do 0% of that what he did in the video and charge you 300€ for the service and of course 21€/Liter for Oil. LOL
Hey mate, thanks for your work. Love and peace from Germany 🇩🇪
A Tip: I did the valve Adjustment and if you follow the steps in this video so far to the point before removeing the Rocker Cover (lift it up a little bit) rotate the crankshaft so far that the rocker carrier RH (right) from cylinder head and the valve springs are pressed down. See 9:07. I is much easier to get the cover of if you take this step. Maybe Dorman was lucky and it was pressed down so he did not had to mention it :D
Sorry just seen this. Nice tip 👍
Great video. I'm in the habit of using a little liquid gasket to help hold the RE tappet cover gasket in its groove. Let it set before refitting the cover. Much easier to align to the cylinder head fir a good fit. Well done! 😊
Fun to watch, you care about your bike and it shows, sounds great too!
Well filmed. Watched lots of before, made me feel more confident about doing this myself. Thanks
Removing the horns is a great touch. Much more room to feddle about! Great vid! Roll on Saturday morning!
Glad you liked it!
Very nice video. I found quite tricky and cumbersome the lay down of the gasket, many times fallen apart when cover was on it at the end I felt lucky achieving the right positioning.
Love the way the bike is looking. But hey, the ding in the tank is still there!
Chris Bull I’m sure there will be more mate !!! I’m rather clumsy
Been watching a few of your videos today and find them to be great and informative. Great looking bike that.
Thanks Pal, appreciated
Excellent video will definitely be able to adjust my 650 now .... love your updates
Thanks for the videos I've found them really helpful, just got a GT 650 a few weeks ago. Walked past your bike today, looks even better in person.
Ah fantastic!! Glad you liked it!
Was so worried that the blue paper you used to plug the spark plug holes would get sucked into the engine as you turned it over! Phew, they didn't get sucked in😀
Yea I had the same concern which is why i didn’t do it the first time. only put them in loose in the top wider part to stop and accidents, any suction would have sucked past. Would have made for an entertaining video though!
Great video, really usefull! Much easier to think about doing a job like this when you have watched someone else do it really well. I havent seen your other videos what happened to your tank or is that something we shouln't mention. Could probably be masively improved with those tools they use inside panels and tap in high spots as you go with panel beating (little) hammer, maybe a little filler then brush paint damaged area and blend with ever finer wet'n dry. Great job with valve clearances and cool bike.
Just what I was looking for thanks for a great video, I'll be doing an adjustment on my next oil change, so I'll probably watch it several times.
Thanks again, Ride Safe.
How happy I am that I don't have to do this that often on my bike ;)
Very Informative - thank you.
And so relaxing!! 😊
Clockwise or anticlockwise is really splitting hairs as far as valve clearance is concerned. As long as the rockers are positioned on the cam base (and a few degrees this way or that way off TDC on the compression stroke really doesn't matter). What matters is whether clockwise or anticlockwise force can potentially loosen the nut on crankshaft, while turning it.
Definitely it will be useful if I ever buy a RE👍🏻😅
The happy music seems to make such work much easier! :-)
Good video mate. Informative and to the point. Thanks! Will be useful once I have the 650
Enjoy your videos and your wife's contributions - how about installing the TEC Stinger 👌
Thanks Robert, I'm waiting for the twin pipe from Tec, and then I will do.
prefer your videos when you talk us thru it,,
Nickel bonne vidéo simple et efficace. Tu l’as trouvé où le manuel d’atelier ? Merci
Hi, I've just watched the official Royal Enfield video and they turn the engine clockwise 🤣
When asked, RE's UK technical support center said to turn it anti-clockwise.
See the previous video, "The Great Valve Controversy".
@@daveinwla6360 it probably doesn't matter but I have always done it the way the engine rotates.
@@fazer094 - Yes, I also think that it doesn't matter - because of the many degrees of crank rotation during which the cam lobe is not in contact with a tappet, and the valve clearance can be set anywhere in that range of degrees.
When you turn the crank anti-clockwise from the left side using the tool, the timing chain is going in the direction as if the engine is running, this ensures you are not stressing the slack side of the timing chain where the chain tensioner runs👍
Nice video 👍 I'll come back to this when I do mine this month.
How did you remove the old sealant from the gasket?
Btw..Your rocker cover and casing looks nice shiny, the stainless plates also come up incredible if you use a buffer.
Thanks again ;)
Cheers. I like a slightly tarnished look on mine but I know what you mean my mate polishes his and its like a mirror!
Cracking job mate 👍
Lovely tutorial. Thankyou
Hello my friend. Could you list all the tools you use and have? That would be extremely helpful for those who want to do their own maintenance. Thank you!
BTW, if it hasn't been mentioned, a (north American) 1/2" lag bolt head fits into the inspection cover in place of the 14mm Allen socket which few home mechanics will have. Undo and reinstall using vice grip pliers.
Thanks Robert
I have been watching your video from past two hours, of Interceptor 650, i really like the way you have build it so neat and mean ! totally buying the bike.
1. Can i know what Tank bank is yours (Orange)
2. Have you comeup with any Soft luggage Options or Side Panels for long Trips ?
My tank bag is a combination of a Kriega tank bag converter and then a alpkit drybag strapped to it. I'll do a little video on it sometime. I've got various options re soft luggage, but I want to make some side frames first. Thanks for watching!
HI dude! I am buying my Interceptor next month and despite all negative gossip here in Brazil,I decided to take the risk and go for this bike.I will change it a bit, customize it,and my question is,if painting the engine in black may affect the working temperature. Many thanks for your useful videos!A hug from Brazil! Take care and nice rides!
Marcelo Vianna - get it you won’t regret it! I’ve seen a few painted black. I can’t imagine it would make that much difference but I’m no expert. There are also some black covers available from Thailand I think .
What is the negative gossip about?
@@kotimoto most of them about the Himalayan model fortunately, because I am purchasing an Interceptor.
@@makj44 agree, Himalayan was plagued with issues, however the interceptor was designed by Ex Triumph engineers, they control quality. Which is evident from the new bikes.
@@kotimoto that's the reason which moves me to have my Interceptor next month, dude!many thanks for the comment!
Having just adjusted the clearances after turning the crank the incorrect clockwise direction; do you think I need to recheck them or do you think the clearances should be accurately gauged despite rotating it backwards?
Phaedrus I’m sure they’ll be fine pal. I’m tempted to check mine out of interest though!
First you can hear it (there should be a light clicking / ticking sound like a “happy valve is a sloppy valve (in range of course ;)) and Second it is not Necessary to recheck
Hi Mr Dorman. Just about to do my first valve adjustment. Do you reckon i could do it with the tank still on?. Cheers Ian
Doubt it. Its very easy to remove. You can’t lift your abs module without removing tank. Ensures clear visibility as well if you remove. Cheers
Bro the crank needs to be rotated in clockwise direction....please confirm and let me know why too
amigo muy buen video gracias
How do you get the gasket to stay?
Hi Dorman... do you applied any sealant to the gasket before fitting the header cap? Thanks
Hi, just on the oval part on the left side of the bike, only where I show it on the vid. Cheers
Hi mate. It seems you were right the second time. The magneto bolt on the Interceptor is not a reverse thread. I stumbled upon this video and it shows the magneto bolt being removed. Sorry for this never ending controversy but atleast this will finally put this issue to bed. And it seems the manual was actually correct. Heres the link:
ruclips.net/video/-KfgrmvCAbc/видео.html
P.S watch it from 2:46
@@McFaddis I found a solution to this controversy. Just put the bike on the center stand and onto a high gear and turn the rear wheel in the forward direction in increments until the mark is aligned with TDC. No need to even remove the crankshaft hole cover.
Was that copper anti-seize compound ("copper grease") that you put on the lobe of the cam cover gasket?
Dave InWLA - Hi Dave, no it was instant gasket. There is a bit of black sealer on there from factory so a potential leak point.
I could do with some help finding the right and what repair manual to download of the net any help please.
Don’t bother mate its junk 😂.
Seriously though not sure now, cant remember where i got mine had it 2 years. Hopefully its been sharpened up since.
Complimenti
Atenção... Verificar as folgas da vela de ignição.
Why does the fuel tank need to come off?
Just makes it easier, after all pulling the tank isn't too difficult
Re *clockwise vs. anti-clockwise* turn of the crank: Could it be that it *makes no difference* ?
The valves being adjusted are closed, and the tappets are over the base of the cam lobe
(where the lobe is circular), and the tappets aren't affected by small amounts of cam/crank
rotation. The play in the engine, especially in the cam chain, is probably too small in either
direction to allow a rising part of the cam lobe to touch the tappet and to affect the clearance.
Or maybe I'm missing something? Does the cam chain care which way it turns the cam?
The risk seems to be skipping the cam chain messing up the valve timing, I can’t see that happening however at such slow careful rotations.
@@DormanDiaries - Yes, I think that's it. The goal is to have a straight pull by the crank sprocket on the cam sprocket without an intervening tensioner. Assuming that the crank turns anti-CW as seen from the left side of the engine, and since the timing chain tensioner is inserted from the back of the engine (as seen in the workshop manual), one would expect that one should turn the crank anti-CW to avoid putting slack on the drive side (the front side) of the chain. But the workshop manual consistently throughout shows graphically, and textually directs, a CW rotation. There is even a caution box that says, "DO NOT rotate crankshaft anti-clockwise". The workshop manual that one can find as a PDF online, is for the 2019 BS4 Interceptor. Perhaps it has been revised for the BS6 model.
👍👍👍👍👌👌👌
Installing the valve cover sucks....
