There's something that's really bugging me ia the fact that Erica's last music video she did was when she was 19, which means she was doing music videos around 15/16. Shocking and genuinely sad that she was being exploited and being taken advantage of. She grew up so fast and never got to have a proper upbringing filled with love, guidance, supervision and protection..

I love that this era of music captured the natural beauty and essence of black women. After watching some BET documentaries on video vixens, I wish there wasn't so much ugliness that took place on set; everything from the mistreatment to the sexual objectification left a bad mark on these women. I'm just glad we have this era to appreciate/look back on to see how beauty standards have drastically changed (for the worse).

The video vixen era will always be my ultimate favourite era. So many beautiful women mentioned in this video who fully capitalised and profited from their beauty in their prime years. Especially Karlie, Claudia, Kenya Moore and Serious from Flavor Of Love and Brooke. They all had very successful careers during that time.

That industry is about who you know or who you're willing to sleep with. Anyone on TV who appears to have come "out of no where" did not. They were getting passed around or auditioning for years.

BFTV I love your shared appreciation for the video vixen era. I wish I had a time machine so I could go back and live my 20's during that time. That decade produced some of the most iconic aesthetics and music still to this date. I remember being in highschool and being so geeked to watch flavor of love and wanting to be a video model. I even had and read the Karine Steffens book when I was like 16 lol. I briefly pursued being a video vixen in my local city but then eventually went to college. These videos are so nostalgic and near and dear to my heart!
And can we talk about how beautiful their bodies were?? The natural slim fit look was everything. This is back when you actually had to be baddie. I hope that aesthetic makes a come back.

I was doing music videos last year… this year I’m working on Peacocks Bel Air🙃. A lot of us use doing videos as a way to work our way up. They don’t really use black girls anymore tho mostly mixed ig girls who aren’t naturally pretty in the face. And I’ve been the darkest girl on music video sets multiple times.
