This is the best backhand instruction I've seen, bar none. First he shows you how you need to use your wrist and forearm. That's huge. And he's spot on with the biomechanics of the wrist twisted or cocked back so the bat faces the chest and then using the arm coming forward until right before contact he uses his wrist and forearm. I also love how he uses a credit to recreate the frisbee like throwing motion. This is outstanding instruction.
One of the best instructional sessions on the backhand loop. Clear, and very well explained, and also demonstrated the relationship between the arm and the wrist, and I have always wondered about this. Do I use the wrist, do I use just the arm? If I use both, how does that work? You answered that very well. This is a video I can back to over and over again. Is it unusual that I find the forehand loop so much easier to do than the backhand? Seems to be less moving parts on the forehand. Thanks again for a job well done!
This is great advice. The biomechanics of the stroke explained and also the importance of brushing the ball with a closed bat angle. I would add that it's important to make contact with the ball near the end of the bat as that is the part of the bat that is moving the most, I always play a better quality ball when I manage to do this. Look at the marks on the rubber surface left by the ball after hitting quite a few balls, this his how I realized I was hitting too close to the handle, which I still do during matches.
@@ebatt8803 yes. Excellent explanation of backhand topspin. It will be great if you make a few vids about its and so about forehand tops and about footwork. You're talented teacher as well. Thank you.
Thanks Guy! Love these tutorial videos, looking forward to more videos on backhand techniques. Your camera is out of focus for some of this video, but I know you guys are always improving.
Thanks for the tutorial....i am currently trying to improve my backhand & this really looks great tutorial. I will practice that.... Will let you know how it works...
This is very good, even without Eli, you are a good teacher, one good thing to do on videos would be to do a quick equipment roundup so we can see which bat and rubbers you are using
Great video and timely for me. My backhand shots are "ok" at best (in other words not great). I really want to develop the backhand flick especially when receiving a ball with topspin. For some reason, I do seem to be able to get the flick to work when I receive a ball with backspin but not so well with topspin. Thanks for posting.
Great tutorial even without Eli. ;-) Can you explain, how I can get more spin into the backhand shots? My backhand is good and very powerful. But I want to play slower balls with more spin and I don`t know how.... Most of them are landing behind the table. Thanks a lot and keep going on!
Thank you for the excellent tutorial on backhand topspin. Question: Are we trying to get to a leverage point where the wrist is folded and leveraged against the forearm before the stroke
Rising to the task ,well done Guy ! This was definetly your top appearance so far ,I'm impressed. Very nice demonstration and very good points . I certainly witnessed my kid adopting that pronounced late wrist snap with my kid recently and this has proven aweinspiring effective ,almost like a whip, but pure brushing motion. I 'd love to see a comparison of different backhand topspin techniques and your take on if there is value in adopting more than just 1 variant . Caro loves the balls out full body bh Topspin ,whole body twist variant ,where you hit the ball more to the side of your stomach , but she had to find out this works only for a limited range of incoming balls .How set the breakpoint from using whole body side of the stomach hitting point to the Forearm and wrist dominated ts you beautifully demonstrated? my gut feeling is its more than just a decision of how far inro the backhand corner the ball is,about to go but also a height thing ? In your tutorial most incoming balls were quite high over the net and its very tempting and effective to smash those?
All of that just to flex some muscles! :D Just kidding, amazing tutorial, and on top of that perfectly on point for me as the mid rally backhand topspin is one of my pain points (along with footwork). Thank you so much, I have to view it again 100 times :)
thanks so much very informative... i am a little confussed... you say to release the wrist (and more arm) on contact with the ball however when i watch you in slow motion you seem have already released your wrist way before contact with the ball..
Hi from New Zealand. You have a very natural looking backhand thanks for sharing... Currently I am practicing hitting ball against a board on oppersite side of table due to being in lockdown. May I ask when you are bringing your arm back (to start the shot) as the wrist snaps back naturally.. Then when you start the motion forward with your arm.....are you using your thumb to help bend the wrist forward or are you using the very end of the bat handle as leverage where in contact with your palm of hand.. I can use one or the other.. Which do you use??
Going to try the topspin drive drill tonight, still having problems getting this shot from the practice table into games - my BH is too passive in matches. BTW who is Eli training in Goa? I'm Goan and was lucky enough to catch an Indian National Junior tournament out there 3 years ago, very high standard.
This video helped a lot. I just need some help. When I do a backhand shot, it doesn't go diagonally. I want it to go rightwards to the opponents left (i'm right handed) but the ball just curves leftward to my opponents right side ackwardly. Any tips? Main idea is I want the ball to go cross court diagonally.
Great tutorial. However I think one key point u forgot to mention is to play elbow away from the body. I was not getting the power because my elbow was too close to the body. U r already doing in the video, but might not be obvious to beginners and intermidiate players
I’d say the best tutorial and the most important this video demonstrates the correct technique.
I am poor at back hand.Trying a lot to improve. Thanks for this video 👍
Very simple, easy understand, thank you so much
I've played competitive TT for several years. This video is on point. Excellent coaching!

Excellent video explaining the backhand strokes. Very impressed by your descriptions and how you break down various aspects when striking the ball.
Backhand confidence real issue for a lot of players including myself. Looking forward to seeing the next backhand related tutorial. Thanks a lot!
