My Grandfather was a POW here for over 500 days. He was with the 45th ID and one of the greatest men I have ever known.

    Jeżyk, Józef

One day in early April 1945, Józef Jeżyk, a Polish worker who had been sent to Germany, was plowing a field near Moosburg, Bavaria when, to his great astonishment, a man dressed in prisoner’s garb approached him. The man introduced himself as Artur (Arthur) Flaks, and informed Jeżyk that he was a Jewish refugee who had just escaped from the death march leaving Buchenwald for the south. Jeżyk, realizing that prompt action was called for, hid him in the bales of hay on his wagon - just in time, for the SS soon turned up looking for their prisoner. Jeżyk drove Flaks to his employer’s farm, where he arranged a well-concealed hiding place for him in the hayloft, without the farmer’s knowledge. Jeżyk provided Flaks with civilian clothes, brought him food, removed his bodily waste, and made sure his presence was never discovered. In risking his life for Flaks, Jeżyk was guided by humanitarian motives, which overrode considerations of personal safety or economic hardship. Flaks stayed in the hayloft until May 1, 1945, when he was liberated by the American Army. After the war, Jeżyk returned to his native town in Poland, while Artur Flaks stayed in Germany, where he kept up a correspondence with his rescuer.

On January 8, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Józef Jeżyk as Righteous Among the Nations.

My uncle was liberated from Stalag VIIA on April 29, 1945. Are you going to do an English version of this video?

You can switch on "subtitles" in the settings (gear wheel) and select an "automatic translation". This is not always perfect, but mostly understandable.
