I bought the Sigma 50 mm f1.4 art as I was so pleased with my Sigma 35 mm f1.4. I use it on my R6 with an adaptor and it works fine !
For the money, Sigma ART EF lenses offer incredible value. Can buy 2 or perhaps even 3 for the cost of a single RF lens.
There is an extra cost and hassle with mirrorless glass as it locks you into only one manufacturer's camera system. Getting EF mount lenses gets rid of that hassle as instead of having to sell and re-buy all your glass to use on another manufacturer's mirrorless system, all you have to do is buy an adapter.

FWIW, the older Canon EF 1.2 L is razor sharp in the middle after f/2. I love the rendering of the old 1.2 wide open better than the newer lenses. But if you want razor sharpness, it's about one stop away. I've found that to be more versatile for my uses. You have a choice of dreamy rendering vs razor sharpness in one lens with a slight compromise to the aperature.
Exactly, I so agree. This lens shines for portraits taken wide open, the results are simply amazing. I haven't encountered any of the issues in real life but im sure if i start "testing" for them they will appear, who cares. Also, the weight is very nice for this kind of quality, a huge difference from the other two lenses, who wants to lug those around besides professionals who absolutely require it ?? Also you can find great quality copies second hand as the build quality is fantastic. Before judging i'd say look at sample images taken with this lens. Also don't forget, many youtubers are great at testing but not at taking amazing pictures
Man, the RF puts the old EF 50mm to shame. I've used both and when I used the EF on my EOS 5D Mark II back in the day I always struggled to get really sharp images. Now I know why! I've used the RF 50mm f/1.2 on the EOS R and it is crazy sharp and contrasty.
Yeah, the EF 1.2 bokeh looks pretty bad if there's some contrasty features which you can't avoid every time. The new lenses are much more smooth, I'm glad we have such tech advancements.
Given the huge price difference, you'd certainly hope there's a corresponding performance difference.
@@raksh9 their optical design is very different. The design of RF50 1.2 is very complicated makes it high cost.
Actualy using old lens on old DSLR body is recipe for focus problems.

EF was built with DSLR in mind. And it was a main go to portrait lens after 85 f1.2 for over a decade. Even with 5Dsr.
If you plan on a hardcore cropping and pixel peeping at 500%, then you need to look elsewhere ofc. Otherwise you can still take award winning images with it and no one will ever know. Been using mine for over a year on 80D and have zero complaints.
yep, for portraits you dont' need to see every pore on a person's face.

I just bought a 50 ART for my R so this video pleases me. It's tack sharp from wide open in my use so no complaints.

Really important for budget hunters! The EF 50mm STM is quite nice, but I have a feeling the RF version is way better. Maybe it costs double the EF's price, but I watched a few videos, and the sharpness and bokeh seems to be better.
I just thought that a comparison between the RF 50mm f1.2 and the Sigma Art would be nice and then, 5 seconds later i got this video recommended.

I’ll keep my Old Ef lens unique photo pleasing softness character, not overly tack sharp that shows face blemishes that you spend so much time in photoshop. If you want tack sharp go to F2 aperture
It really is a lens that defies logic
I had that 50mm Sigma Art when i was using my Eos R. Absolutely loved it and with R i did'n have any problems with AF that i had while using all of my previous DSLR's.
So Canon has introduced an AF lens that beats Sigma on image quality with exception to vignetting and distortion - both of which are easy to correct in-camera or in Lr. It's surprising it took this long to do so. The Art lens has been available since 2014 if I recall correctly. And I absolutely love mine, even more so now that I have a Nikon Z5 and don't have to worry about calibrating the thing for the DSLR viewfinder.
I would wait for Sigma to make the DN version of the Art series. So far they all've been great.
Yeah, it's rumoured that Sigma will release RF mount glass 2021.

@@Soul_Visuals_Photography In an interview a Tamron rep told that they are also working on RF glass. It was supposed to be released already this year but there are delays (probably do to COVID). So it might not take too long to get more alternatives.

It would be really nice to get cheaper high quality options from Sigma and Tamron because often only the "L" marked expensive Canon lenses are that really high performance level. And the cheaper Canon lenses aren't that good - though there are exception of course. Sometimes even if they (non "L" Canon) have good picture quality they might suffer from other problems like really slow AF.
So I have planned to buy two of the lenses I use the most from the native Canon line up but save money and get Sigma (or Tamron) for other focal lengths.
I love my Sigma 50mm on my R6!! It’s a keeper for sure!!
I'm keeping my old EF 50mm F1.2! Not that I could afford anything else, but I happen to love the look I get with that old thing :-) And it cost me less than a new Sigma.
The EF 50 is one of those lenses that goes against normal testing. What do I mean by that? I've been shooting for years and I've had some fantastic sharp beautiful lenses but I kid you not the lens that has made me the most money and gotten me the most love is that 50 mm ef. Everything he says in this video is correct but sometimes certain lenses exceed typical testing
@@marcusnartatez Totally agree! There's some magic in that lens that just gets me the results I want every time. I use that one and the old EF 85mm F1.2 for about 80% of my work or something like that. Not planning to switch any time soon :-)
That RF picture quality looks so nice - but for a hobbyist the price doesn't 😞. Let's hope that Sigma hurries up with RF DN models!
I have the RF 50mm f1.2 and R5 combo and find that the sharpness varies based on lighting and distance to the camera. A 3/4 length portrait in very soft light seems to lack sharpness when compared to the RF 85m 1.2 in the same conditions. Still a great lens though!

Excellent as always, i still think the order for "best value for money" is: Canon 1.8stm < sigma 1.4 Art < Canon RF 1.2. All the others in between are disappointing
What about the brand new RF 50mm 1.8?
So it seems like the RF lens of course has superior optics all around, although the Sigma is right up there at least in the center. Here's the kicker though.....Sigma Art lenses SUCK at focusing on DSLRs. I once had a 35mm Art lens and it missed focus all the time even after extensive calibration; it would miss sometimes front focusing, sometimes back focusing, so it wasn't correctable with calibration. It's a consistent theme, at least on DSLRs. Have you noticed any major improvements with focus accuracy with Art lenses on mirrorless bodies? That's a huge dealbreaker. I know the RF lenses are remarkably accurate even wide open.
The ART lenses focus perfectly on mirrorless. Mirrorless relies on contrast detect autofocus, so there's no longer a problem

I've been pretty happy with my Sigma 50mm Art lens - especially adapted to the RF mount. But the Canon's RF f/1.2L has a clear edge of superiority...this image quality different is significant enough that I'm considering selling all of my Sigma primes for this new one - I never thought I would say that!
When using EF version I never complained about sharpness. I like colors, bokeh and its ability of renedering.

It would be interesting to see how Canon's new RF 50mm 1.8 compares to the RF 1.2 and the EF 1.2/1.4/1.8 of yesteryear. It supposedly has a new optical formula over the older lenses.

The higher price, the better quality. Usually, people pick EF 50.12 for its unquantifiable aesthetic feeling.

I have the 50 1.2 and I love it. The fact that you can shoot wide open and it’s almost perfect from there is amazing. The technical achievement of that will not let me sell it. Now I’m just patiently awaiting the rf 600mm review. 😊

Great photo examples and superb efficiency in what is best, good, and fair about each. I would have loved it if you could have included the Canon EF 50mm 1.8 STM lens to see how that would fare against these expensive beasts. Great review again though.
One thing that you’ve missed to mention here is that the EF50L delivers the most life-like image, with great perception of depth and great micro-contrast due to its low element count, while the other two are truly modern, highly corrected, very flat lenses, especially the Sigma. And yes, the EF50 also has great soul, it is one of the lenses that you will always buy again after you sell it. And yes, lenses like the EF50L will show technical flaws wide open. :) Not everything in photography is sharpness, mate... Cheers.

Wow the RF lens looks freaking AMAZING. I think as canon gears more towards mirrorless, the price of the lens will probably go down as well, since mass manufacturing something tends to reduce the overall price. The Sigma is an insane value tho and I even read that some of the focusing issues that Sigma lenses have actually (for the most part) disappear when used on Canon mirrorless bodies. Easy choice!
Just out of curiosity, what is the focusing issues that Sigma lenses have? Can they be fixed in camera?
@@Brittow Hey, something about the way their autofocus system worked with canon DSLRs was really shoddy. My Sigma 18-35 had unusable autofocus on my 7Dii, sometimes focus would be nearly right, other times literally meters off, both front and back, at random. Because it wasn't consistent in any way, it couldn't be corrected. But it totally disappeared in LiveView, and has no issues whatsoever on my new R5
I had the EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM from 2010 to 2016, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art from 2016 to 2020.
Now I got the RF 50mm f/1.2 L USM ... and it is a phantastic lens! So sharp, such a wonderful bokeh!
Factor in the price, 50EF f1.2L can be had for about the same price as near new Sigma 50ART. Double that price won't be able to get an RF 50F1.2L just to put into perspective. There isn't enough used rf f1.2L on the market and plenty of EF 50L from various year model available.

I love this! I just picked up the EF 50mm TS-E-and despite it "only" having a maximum aperture of 2.8, it's likely the highest resolution lens in my collection, besting the RF 24-70 and other tilt shifts I have. I wonder how it would stack up against the RF 50mm 1.2? I can't wait for Sigma to "crack the code" of RF, because I would love to pick up a few of their fast aperture primes. Hard to justify the Canon versions, as nice as they are.
The sigma can be found for around $600, if you are okay with adapting that is the clear winner.

Didn't expect the old Canon to show up so poorly in this test! Not to say it's a bad lens, but that fringing even at f2 was more than expected. Great review/comparison as always!

I went for a used EF 1.2L at 840€. First the RF is out of my budget, second - for sharp street photos I'm gonna use the upcoming RF 50 1.8 and finally: I ordered a drop in filter adapter by Breakthrough so EF is further cost efficient. Could have gone for the Sigma as well but I wanted to experience something different than my photographer friend with his Sony a7 iii and the Sigma.

Because of your review the R5 is really high on my wishlist, but i'm still note sure if this is a good idea since I might have to buy new lenses if the old ones woud become terribly _unusable_ .
Eg.: I have an EF 70-200 f/2.8 lens that already costed a good fortune. Now I wonder how it compares to the RF 70-200 f/2.8 that costs about 50% more than the lens I already have.

I heard about the 50 RF front element will moving in & out because of the autofocus. Is it true and is it annoying for video shoot?

Very interesting review and pretty much how I expected. Sold my sigma 50 art 3 years ago and always regretted it and bought a second hand in excellent condition for 300 dollars. How well does a sigma 50 art focus on a mirrorless canon camera ?

Ef 50mm f.2 is one of the my favorite lenses. Its sharpness in the middle is quite good in this comparioson. I'm slightly surprised. The difference in image quality between the central and peripheral areas becomes the individuality of the lens.
The Sigma has a "weird" look and you can see it a bit more clearly around 4:40 for about half a minute when you zoom out. It's less contrasty, as if there is a colour layer with just a fraction of opacity over it.

1:27 use an adapter with that ring and you have the same features available.
Due to my taste the RF 15 mm F1.2 is worth the money. It is so amazing what this Lentz is delivering! It really pops And your images look out of the crowd.

Great comparison. I bought the older ef 50mm 1.2 for my R6. It’s small, cheaper , lighter. As the video shows it has colour fringing but that’s easy to remove in post-p. ...I Also own the brand new rf24-70. ...I do wonder if the new RF lenses will loose the magical characteristics that make images look real. My zoom mentioned is very clinical. Good for my commercial work. The older 50 will be for my creative shots wide open. Best to all. Keep snapping 😃

I'd heard the Canon EF F/1.2L was kinda crap, but damn. All things being equal except my budget, give me the Sigma.
As a working professional I can tell you all the people yes you are correct but in real life there is a reason why many professionals to use this old ones.

sigma 50 art eye af with canon r5 or r6 is bit weak with full length shot for models . close up shot is fine .

I understand that EF-L “2” significantly improves EF wherever it occurs. Is this true? It would be interesting to compare with RF where comparable.
I don't think that the price of the adapter should be a factor when comparing lenses, since it's pretty much a must have nowadays, otherwise you'll be paying thousands of dollars in a limited natove lens selection, and it's not like you have to buy 1 for each EF or EF-S lens that you have.
which u will pick art 50 or EF 50mm ?? which better bokeh? would u pick 50mm 1.2 even the sigma is more Sharper??

I have the 5D mark IV, if you have the possibility to choose one EF Lens for the same price, used. Would be Sigma or Canon ?
Iv'e owned both lenses and used them on the 5dmk4, the Sigma Art in practical use is way better optically than the EF version, virtually distortion free with very little CA at wider apertures. Make sure you calibrate your focus on the 5D4 through Focal software, that way you'll get a higher AF hit rate.
As much as I'd like to choose the Sigma 50mm, it just doesn't match the same color science the canon lenses have, the canon L lenses have much better color contrast reproduction. The Sigma colors remind me of my ef 50mm stm lens, just sharper :/
Have you, or can you do, a video with these lenses on the r body with the Fotodiox Pro Automatic Macro Extension Tubes?

How would you say these lenses compare to the Sony Zeiss 55mm? The RF and Sigma both look sharper in this video, but it's hard to tell if that's due to optics or a factor with the videos themselves (e.g. differences in RUclips compression).

I guess i’m keeping my Sigma ART lens. I love and hated that lens at the same time because of inconsistent focus on DSLR but isn’t a problem in mirrorless. But when it did hit the focus right, it was sharp and beautiful. Just not consistent even after sending it in for calibration.

How do you know if the lens out performes the camera? "If you have a 20-26mp sensor the difference won't be as noticeable"

Good stuff. I've been super happy with my Sigma Art 50 lens. Bought it when I had my 80D as my main camera and still use it with an adapter today on my EOS R. It's been fantastic. And I like Sigma's colors a bit better than Canon's for the portrait work I do.

I mean....Canon never updated the ef f1.2 for years, so seeing and old developed lens from many years ago is expected to be poor :/
