  • I never can find much information about the edge retention and durability of San Mai, one of Cold Steels most used blade materials. So I took a brand new SRK in San Mai and cranked on it a good bit to test the edge retention out. To my surprise it held up pretty well and is fairly durable. Just may need upkeep more then 3V or other good steels for outdoor knives.
    Link for SRK in San Mai cost is around 120$:

    I still stand by that the SRK is the best bang for the buck survival knife. I had the 3V and still have the SK5 versions and I liked them both

    I’ll admit that I’m a fanboy of 3v… that said, I’ve made knives with 5160, 1095 and even 1080 that perform amazingly well. Edge geometry and heat treat are just as important as the type of steel used, to an extent. I love my SRK 3v, btw!

    1:20 Cold Steel have a video on RUclips on the edge retention of the Trail Master San Mai III. The test is staggering and has to be seen to be believed. For example, the rope cutting test ran out of rope before running out of edge! Check it out!

    Did u notice any loosening in the handle? There’s a guy on RUclips who did a video on the 3v version and it was loosing up bad in the handle. I’ve been reluctant to buy this knife because of it. Love your channel buddy

      I’ve not had any loose handles on any of my srk’s. Heavy normal use no issues on almost all the options. Original carbon v, aus8, vg10 san mai, sk5, cpm3v both Italy and Taiwan. I think I know what guy you’re talking about and he’s constantly throwing every knife he has then complains when things get loose from hitting the handle first.

    Punch-wise, JOE X shows that the SRK 3V is no better than the cheaper versions. The SRK is not a pry bar, the tip is fragile at the start, regardless of the steel or the super steel : there is no miracle.
    As for the balance between toughness and maintenance, personally, I prefer resharpening VG10 rather than 3V, and SK5 rather than VG10.
    The Cold Steel SRK VG10 San Mai is not garbage, as some say. And as you rightly say in your video : there is theory, and there is the reality of the field 👍

    • @cerberus1994
      @cerberus1994 Год назад

      So what do you suggest out of the three SRK's?

    • @ludoA.K.A
      @ludoA.K.A Год назад +2

      @@cerberus1994 The best SRK is still the one you can afford (obviously) and use without fear of using it, I would say.
      Knowing that the tip is really really really... pointed and very sharp, and that with use the Kray-Ex material can come off the tang of the knife. Some users complain about it, as surely as Secure-Ex sheaths are sometimes very well adjusted, sometimes a little loose but most often much too tight to the point that you have to force like a brute to get your knife out and in... It's random, about the sheath and the handle, which the scalpel-like tip is not, no matter the steel.
      For a user who takes care of his equipment, the SRK 3V is in theory the strongest : powder metallurgy steel, regulary sized carbides, good balance of characteristics, satin finish out of the box but oxidizable, flat grind like the first SRKs in Carbon V steel. IMO, it's a waste to use CPM 3V steel on a modern SRK, with user feedback about the handle coming off and original tight sheaths dulling the edges. And in Europe, at 200 EUR per knife, it's a waste of money unless you like betting.
      The problem is not because of the SRK design : it is rather the quality control at Cold Steel which is lazy today (the Magnum Tanto 3V steel tests : a piece of art on the outside, a quality random inside that a normal user will never see. But still, it's true.) The black coating of the SK5 is good but could be improved ; the San Mai version has this weak point of laminated steels, the asymmetry, if a laminate has a problem, the whole sandwich becomes fragile.
      There is no better option today : each version of the SRK has qualities and defects to consider before spending your money.
      The most important thing is to have fun with your knives 👍 : there is little chance of doing like JOE X and DBK with them, and they have enough money to buy as much as they want, I suppose.
      PS: I own three SRKs. An SK5 version, no rust, no more tip but no play in the handle, I use it to do what I won't do with my ESEE 6. Two San Mai versions. A knife remains "in the showcase", very shiny but with a badly machined counter-edge ; I use the other knife for day hikes, and making souvenirs from green wood that I carve gently (a Morakniv Companion HD stainless steel accompanies it for messy work: 130 EUR for the SRK San Mai VG10, 15 EUR for the Mora).
      The tip and the counter-edge are perfectly symmetrical on this one, nothing protrudes.However, it has a flaw : a layer of 440 steel covers the cutting edge for about 1 cm at the tip of the knife (the side where it says "SRK". The other side "Cold Steel San Mai, Made in Taiwan" does not have this visual "problem". But it reveals a relaxation on the side of Cold Steel. 130 EUR, that's my limit for a knife whose possible problems I knew.
      That's the reason why I probably won't buy the 3V version, too expensive in Europe. ESEE too is expensive but they had no faults when I bought them (a 6, a 4 and an Izula 2). Still happy, I would say. Plus, the construction is not the same too. But pretty good job for their 1095 steel.

      JoeX isn't the best content creator for how good a knife will be. He puts it under EXTREME abuse that no ordinary knife user will do unless they are TRYING to destroy the blade like he does. I think all SRK knives are excellent. Get the one you can afford. CPM3V is slightly better than San mai for normal field use. It holds the edge longer. But on the flipside San Mai is easier to sharpen and its cheaper. It also can get slightly sharper than CPM3V but the extreme sharpness goes away fast in the field. You can't go wrong with either version.I like and own both.

    • @ludoA.K.A

      @@jonathandiamond6801, nobody said that JOE X was the best : there is no one better than others since everyone has their preferences (we are still waiting for a second destruction of Survival Lilly's APO 1S, considered too light by viewers.)
      But among the enormous range of knives available today, he is the only one (to my knowledge) today who tests them without being afraid of "scratching the blade". It's always interesting to see what the inside of a knife is made of, especially given the selling price of certain models. Otherwise, all knives cut and can be sharpened : no RUclipsr who reviews knives invented hot water.
      It's my opinion.

      @@HeavySetTactical409 I'll add my two cents here. Hopefully your still on the fence because I've owned a CarbonV Recon scout since 1998 and a Trail master in the same since 2002. If you want a more convenient outdoor belt knife your holding it in this video. When you want a large camp knife the 9.5" blade does everything better than the RS 7.5" blade. I rarely use my RS after getting the trail master. IMO a 5/16th inch thick 7.5" blade makes it feel like a crowbar. Short and stout, but way too heavy with not enough length or leverage for chopping.. It's like a happy medium that's bad at everything. To large and thick to skin a deer or do food prep, too short to be an effective chopper, and pretty much just as heavy as a trail master to carry around.. Get the trailmaster 1st before you entertain any thoughts on having a Recon Scout..
