- This video documents the Georgian Bay and North Channel portion of the trip from Port Severn, Ontario to De Tour Village, Michigan. This area is on the northern shoreline of Lake Huron.
Why are you very lucky when you add two of the most beautiful places I know in North Channel. You are absolutely right as you said in your video there is so many beautiful places to visit visit in the North channel but even on the George in Bayside going up from where you did there is a lot of places on the way but it would take you a very long time and probably get stuck here for the winter if you linger too long. My mother and father-in-law have been going to the North channel for probably the last 25 years or so and they say it’s the most beautiful place to sail too or boat too.
An exceptionally beautiful place for sure, worthy of an extended exploration.
Loved the cottage view Canadian stuff - do understand that anchors could impact Hydro "power lines".

Detour Village is 45 miles away from the point where Lake Huron ends and Lake Michigan starts. The line that separates the two is the Straights of Mackinac. General it's when you cross under the Mackinac Bridge.

All of Ontario refers to electricity as "hydro". This comes from the very beginning of electrical power when all electricity came from hydro electric power plants at Niagara Falls and other waterfalls in the province. The utility was called the Hydro Electric Power Commission of Ontario and later changed to Ontario Hydro then again to Hydro One at least for the distribution portion. Nowadays, power comes not only from hydro but from gas powered plants and nuclear power but everyone still calls it "hydro".
im going to have to watch these in order but the angry cottage owners are worldwide, our local complainer's (australia)born before 1960's have complained about oyster farms that have been in existence for over 100yrs, there now a problem because of the view also, we have had them protest about boat ramps as they are a noise problem due to early bird gets the worm...was never a problem until they moved to retire...keep up the good work slow bells..
We are a boaters too and we live in Ontario Canada and have a boat actually on Georgian Bay and we do the North channel quite often. Every summer we have found in some areas a group of cottagers or people who may not even be from Canada who own cottages in the northern region have tried to shoot voters away from Lake area‘s that are good anchorages. but that letter they gave you has no merit in any way in any court, I would say these are self righteous people who have no legal standing on the waterways in Ontario, the only thing you cannot do in front of cottager homes or a long certain waterway is more off to their property. As long as you are in the water with your anchor or anchors you are more than legal to stay there. We have come into arguments with people on the shore before some of them nice , Not.During Covid we had found a very interesting thing because we were doing in North channel during the shut down. We found a lot last boat up there from the states of course and a lot of empty cottages. Finding out a lot of northern cottages are owned by Americans . From my traveling abroad I have found out one thing there is good people and bad people some are grumpy and some are nice.

Have you discovered the affinity that granite has for collecting and holding fiberglass? I learned long ago that keeping them apart is a smart choice. There certainly are some beautiful places to anchor up there and it would be really nice spending some vacation time enjoying it. Too bad time didn't allow you to stay longer, before heading into Lake Michigan.
Agreed. Lake Huron has some of the best cruising ground in the country. I would love to go back there a few times with a kayak or canoe on my car and explore that area a little more.
When you go through Little Detroit.....on an opening that looks narrow but is very deep go slow check your props ....there have been found fishing nets that illegally has been set there....found out by boaters sail boats yachts go through there. When you finally come to a bow facing island go close to port at the opening....there is a hidden giant rock...unmarked to the left of that island...we forgot once & prop hit side of it. Also a watch for dead heads in Spanish river ...the entrance has markers for deep water. The Spanish river gets white caps during high winds along with the north channel but it is the sailing capital of the world.

Yes, at one time our main electric power was generated at Niagara Falls, Ontario using the falling water power. The company was called Ontario Hydro Electric. That was reduced in conversation to Ontario Hydro. Also, sorry about your exprience, but many of the cottages in cottage country are very costly and are owned by Americans who holiday up here. Most of those are wonderful, pleasant people. But some are demanding and rude. It rubs off on some of the otherwise pleasant and polite wealthy Canadians living nearby. :-)
No it is those assholes from Toronto that act like that buy up there.

Buit, about the Loop. I heard there used to be a canal from Cleveland south to get you to the Ohio River. Does anybody know about this and whether it's still there?

Great explanation and guidance on the maps. What app are you using and what app or program gives you the ability to write/draw on the the maps? Thanks and keep up the great work.
Grant Gravois : I use the computer's screen capture functionality to get a picture of the chart, and I save it as a jpg file. I use Microsoft Paint to edit the file, since it is a very simple program to use. But, there are a gazillion programs out there that will edit jpg files. If I have to add circles and lines and text to video files, I use the VSDC editor. To splice everything into the final product, I use a video editor called Vegas.
What ports will you be staying at along the Michigan side of Lake Michigan?
Tony C : I don't really know yet. For one thing, I am new to this area and will have to learn where the marinas are located. There are plenty of resources with this type of information. Another factor is the weather. On a good day, I'll go as far as I can. On other days, I may only be able to travel a half day before the wind tells me to get off the lake.
@@seattleboatguy My wife and I have our boat in St. Joseph, Michigan and have traveled up and down the coast. Good thing about the Michigan side versus the Wisconsin side is that there is a (safe) port about every twenty miles or so. All are good and some very good. Beaver Island is an interesting stop as is Charlevoix, Grand Traverse Bay, Frankfort, Grand Haven, Holland, Saugatuck, South Haven, St. Joseph, and New Buffalo. Problem is you may be running out of time considering the lock closures. I'll check back in case you have questions. You are correct about Lake Michigan being a "salt free" ocean. Enjoy!
@@tonyc5002 : You are right, I am running out of time. And, looks like I'll be stuck in Mackinaw City for most of this week waiting for the winds to die down. But, if I have to wait until the locks reopen, that's not the end of the world. Thanks very much for your info on places to stop along the way.

@@seattleboatguy Unfortunately, that little flying machine has been acting up lately, so I wasn't able to capture much more with it on this trip. Too bad, as we ended up traveling the entire Trent Severn Waterway - both ways - on this voyage, plus a week up on Georgian Bay. I am sorry to hear that you came across a bunch of snooty cottage owners who decided to make up their version of rules and decency guidelines.. very poor canadians, i assure you. enjoying your series, cheers
I'm told that many of the cottage owners come from the USA. I guess they just have a different perspective on things than I do.
If you go back to that inhospitable cove...record the uppity landowners...whenever they approach...have motion detectors ...deer cams ...alarms . In north east Ontario in Plevna area. There is a small lake called Brown's lake...people would put boats in tied up ,later they'd carry small outboard in & fish for years. Some guy bought a piece of land on the lake he built a home on it. His was only house around the lake. Guys would come in & either fish in the boats or from shore on the side of the lake....the man didn't own but only one very small piece of land. He'd come out of his house cursing those men even with small children..telling them to get off his lake & his property....he didn't own it you legally can't own the lake or surrounding. The opp go inform the owner anyone could fish there. He kept doing threats for years ....then he started sinking their boats overnight. Pulling the plug. But had to have eyewitnesses ....so locals set up deer cams. They caught him. ........if you go back to that cove....on dry land before that trip screw the drain plug to your boat in from the inside of your boat....they along with rotten kids that have nothing better to do than swim behind & pull plugs sinking boats
Don't be too hasty to accuse the cottagers along Georgian Bay of being " unfriendly Canadians " . A good many are American and very few are locals . If you think HOA's are bad , they have nothing on the feud between full-time residents and seasonal cottagers. Once the cottagers ( new wealthy owners or 2nd -3rd generation inheritors -who were unaware) discovered that, as tax payers, they could vote and run in local elections, the gloves were off. The locals make their living off tourists, boaters, and they are basically selling the scenery and the cottagers think they own it

They don't own the water !!!!!!! They bought the land ,they own it. They like the water views......they don't own & cannot enforce that!!!! Their are very rude uppity people who try to push you around.before you go back up again check on landowners rights over the waterfront frontage...they own their docks & beach. Hand them a copy of their limited rights ....if they persist...tell them to have a good day ....& inform them if they won't ....that they are welcome to call coast guard, opp,dog catcher, bird watcher, or their plumber out !!!!!I love the north channel next time you go ...go up the Spanish river pass their is mania their very nice big the town of Spanish has restaurants liquor store grocery hardware, ice cream , pizza delivery , gas stations, etc....all walkable. I love that town!!!! It's hard to find in Canada all things located in same walkable town even has sat. Veg market along rr tracks & a bank!llll

Sorry about your experience with the cottagers, some people in Canada are elitist just like other countries. I live on the prairies and have had cottagers tell me not to fish in front of their property, I give them the veterans salute with my middle finger, having served my country for over 20 years, I’ll fish wherever I want! The law in Canada is you don’t own any water you can float a canoe. Like America rich people think they own everything.
There's another one of those 100+ year old swing bridges in Parry Sound. It was manufactured in Scotland and shipped there.
You map of Georgian Bay only encompasses the shore line when that whole chunk of water is actually Georgian Bay. Also, the 30,000 islands aren't just up there in the north but start below Port Severn and work their way up that Eastern coastline to the French River.
Those rude "Canadians" may not have been Canadian at all. My family has owned a place up there in the vicinity of Sans Souci which is on Frying Pan Island and we are very American. I can't say I really blame people for being a little rude. You pay, what... $200,000 on a boat and you think that can sit in the front yard of a 2 million dollar house? They are paying literally 10 times what you are for their little piece of privacy that they probably only get to enjoy for a few weeks out of a year, and then you park your van on their lawn. Who is the rude one here exactly? There's plenty of privacy to go around up there. So many nooks and places to anchor with no one around.
Markers, yeah, as you say... granite rich environment above and below the water line. That's precambrian rock, some of the oldest exposed rock in the world. When your prop goes head to head with precambrian rock, you'll wish you paid attention to the channel markers. I run paper charts and a Garmin GPS with that area as well as the Puget Sound (West Coast) downloaded into it because I do a lot of boating in both of those areas. But I always always refer to the markers first and foremost. Therefore, a good spotlight and a pair of relatively low power binoculars are a must for navigating in that environment. The markers are reflective and shine bright in low light. Of course as time goes on more and more markers are lit up. I don't mind saying, I hate progress.
No one owns the water. Drop anchor where you like and enjoy the surroundings. Some people just have nothing better to do than whine and lay claim to what isn't theirs.
Unfortunately thats what you get in georgian bay, those ppl think they own the fish too
