I never understood how people thought that the politics of the prequel trilogy were "boring". I always thought they were rather fascinating and easy to follow.
King Poseidon I really liked watching out for Palpatine's sly grabs for power.
Me too.
people dont like to think about why explosions are happening, they just want explosions... and so they completely miss the moral of the story, being an analog to both the late roman republic and modern america
I do to. I was 8 when I first saw episode 1 and I never had an issue following it. In fact I loved the politics because my parents constantly made me watch the news and I barely understood it. For the first time it were politics that I actually understood so that got me pretty excited.
It was the way they were shown and how they worked within the movies as a whole that people have a problem with. As shown by the Clone Wars, that political side is quite interesting when done properly
I always found the CIS quite fascinating. It's this mix between naive idealism and cold hearted business. Made up of a lot of senators that mean well but are dependent on the rich business leaders and who's leader is trying to make them lose.
Glad to see the awesome Templin Institute getting a big, well-deserved promotion. Such an awesome channel.
They’re not very good
same, i discovered them from a random reddit post and every video they have done has had superb editing and interesting information, they are very new so they are small yet, but if they keep up this quality they will grow fast without a doubt. Also, the only response i can give to Will Earl above me is, maybe try making a response from somewhere else then your ass, and you might say something less useless.
Spacedock - yes, i'm pretty sure Star Wars explained introduced me to your channel(or was it Trekyards) and once again I've been introduced to another Channel with excellently presented videos that I know I'm going to love. :)
Will Earl, we make up for it with enthusiasm!
Listen not to him. Spacedock, Star Wars Explained, Trekyards and you all at The Templin Institute are among my absolute /favorite/ Sci-fi channels on RUclips. Hands down.
Thank you all for all the hard work you do to put out such great content.
I like how they explain the events as if it came from a Star Wars universe history book. Sometimes I forget the regular people in the SW galaxy don’t know about a lot of things we know about, like Palpatine’s involvement with the Sepratist’s.
The CIS will rise again
Starsystem rights
they sort of did, in the form of the rebellion from 4-6 ~
I see what you did.
"An empire crumbled by its enemies may rise again, but one which crumbles from within, that's dead...forever"

@Slav Squirrel! no the new republic was ineffective in defending planets and focused on its core worlds instead of the outer worlds which was the reason cis was formed, since other worlds were being raped by the inner core
The Prequels missed the opportunity to flesh out the Confederacy, and show that there were heroes and villains on both sides.
So watch the clone wars?
It’s a good thing that The Clone Wars did that!
AnakinDidNothingWrong Ya.... "Heroes on Both Sides" is a quote directly from the Clone Wars.
The Clone Wars made some Episodes on that, especially the Season 3 Episode "Heroes on Both Sides." But even then, the whole show was biased towards the Republic being the victorious good guys. Season 1 and 2 were nothing but pure Republic. Season 3 took some steps with the "Supply Lines" episode, having the Confederacy win their probably first on-screen planetary invasion (one where they completely wiped out the Republic forces on Ryloth), but even then, they were still betrayed as powerful villains, not people with goals. And then the Padme arc where she tried to bring the Clone Wars to an end came, giving the Separatist some character. But that was about it. Probably the last time we saw some good guy separatist characters was another Padme Arc in Season 6, with Scipio and the Banking Clan.
The opening crawl of star wars episode 3 states that there are heroes on both sides
Thanks for sharing this! Hope everyone enjoys the video!
The Templin Institute good channel just subbed
Great video!
The Templin Institute LOVED IT completely changed my view on the confederacy
your channel is awesome, +1 subscriber
Excellent job. Do more of this.
The background music make it seem like the CIS were the good guys, which, they really were.
No they were just less evil than the empire
@@Aslatiel4what so evil about them? It was just a collection of states former members of the Republic who wanted to exercise their right to self-determination and start living without a thoroughly corrupt impotent republican regime. The Republic has been siphoning resources from the Outer Rim worlds for millennia, while giving nothing in return.

Who thought that space politics would flesh out a galaxy so far far away...
Mr.Dr.Professor Toaster A long time ago no less
Many complain about them but even as a child I found them the most interesting part of the prequels. I really wished episode 2 had focused more on the political situation of the CIS, how it worked, what it stood for, how it's relationship is with the republic and all of that. But I think George Lucas was afraid to do that because of the enormous backlash episode 1 had for it's politics.
This was interesting. I haven't watched the clone wars animation and now i'm intrigued. Especially seeing how CIS Senate was effectively betrayed from within by Dooku and CIS Council. I wonder if there's any short stories of CIS senate members realizing how they had been played after Palpatine declared his new order.
I really like the way they kind of made it like an in-universe documentary. No one knows what Darth Sideous did, no one knows about Darth Vader and how he found the Separatists on Mustafar, so these highly important story details are just overlooked completely.
Top tier video mate!
Its so sad to see how Palpatine used both CIS and Republic for his own personal gain in the end.
I know. So many sacrifices were made, so much pain was endured on all fronts, yet in the end it would all be for nothing.
Plus, the confederation was kinda the good guys politically speaking just lead by a evil man who had other motives than what they had.
Yeah it's like either way his empire in the original trilogy would've become a reality. Only difference being they'd probably have more battle droids and less stormtroopers
yeah i'm cisgender. confederacy of independent systems gender.

DeadTroperSociety I hope so... I mean hey, General Kalani is still out there. Perhaps he can reactivate some of the droid factories and get things back on track for the CIS?
The Confederacy of independent systems is the best faction tbh
Long live the CIS!

Correct
FOR THE GLORY OF THE EMPIRE!!!!!
You’re all traitors. We all know that the great Galactic Empire is the only true galactic government.
I enjoy the CIS. I think it would be cool if the resistance reactivated Droid factors and they used them against the first order it would be cool.
Fully agreed.

I loved this video, the cis always goes underapreciated in the analysis front. Altought the background music was a tad too loud in comparison to the narrator sometimes.
Roger Roger! All hail the CIS!

Glory to the Separatist Alliance!
LONG LIVE THE CONFEDERACY! (only time this is acceptable)
This video was interesting to say the least. Liked the girl who spoke about the Separatists.
The CIS will always be a very unique faction in the SW universe. Though i gotta say i still like the Republic/Empire/ first order more. The evolution of one terrible philosophy as it keeps changing political systems across time is intriguing. From rotten democracy to rotten centralized government to rotten overly militarized rump state (yeah, the FO is literally north korea) it's just fun to watch.
If the Confederacy was to ever fail, let it be written in its gravestone that it died of a theory.
P.S I know that was the CSA but still, just having a link with the CIS and CSA on how they formed their own government against a bigger one only to be crushed.
Daniel Ortiz You... You seriously prefer the FO to the CIS ?
My god, what we’ll do with you younglings... Bah, I heard Anakin Skywalker was nearby, I’ll call him.
The space south will rise again!
The Confederacy would've won if Roger had actually shown up when they called for him. Darth Roger was a formidable fighter.
TBH I wouldn't mind joining The CIS
Same.
the narrator of this video sounded like she was reading aloud from a star wars history textbook and i love it
Thank you for this video. Most people just dismiss the CIS as the "other guys in the clone wars" but I think the CIS was a far superior government compared to the Galactic Republic, and it would be cool to see more of them in the future.
Far better than the Republic.
Indeed
I respectfully disagree. While the Republic naturally gave in to rich corporations on policy like many democracies in our world, at least they never let the corporations make the military and then command it. Granting all the power to the head of state is also bad, but at least it’s natural. What do you think happens when you give rich men the power to make and control a government’s armed forces?
The CIS are the good guys!
If you pay close attention to the HUD, you'll note two _Ace Combat_ references. Lower left-hand corner has the display listed as "Sky Eye", while the upper right corner reads "COFFIN N/SYS"
Jimmy Seaver They did make a vid about Ace Combat, specifically about the Union of Yuktobanian Republics, the USSR/Russian equivalent in Strangereal, the main timeline for those reading this who wants to know more about AC
Yayo' Ariowibowo Watched that one. It was fantastic even with the relatively limited information they had.
it's on every single one of their videos
Honestly, the CIS, and the dynamic between them and the Republic have got to be some of the most interesting parts of the prequel era to me.
The CIS was made up of alot of people with good intentions, but like this video showed, they fell victim to the very corruption they left the Republic to escape. There really wasn't a wholly good side in the Clone Wars.
A good ending where there wasn't a shadow council and the CIS actually embraced democracy, liberty, anti-monopoly and anti-corruption measures and finally won over the old, corrupt system, that's too good to be true.
The CIS Were the good guys and The betrayal from their leadsership and "loss" of The war is one of the saddest things in Sci-Fi.
So uhh...#TheCISDidNothingwrong anyone?
@@maximumeffort7096 #TheCISwasgoodbutShadowCouncilwasevil
I don't get why it's called the clone wars and not the galactic civil war. Because the actual galactic civil war was really just a rebellion. They fought with guerrilla warfare, not actual armies. The clone wars are a much better example of a civil war so I just don't get why they named it like this.
This is, indeed, a galactic Civil War, but the Confederacy had completely succeeded from the Republic. It's like 2 countries fighting eachothers, but in a way, the Separatist was once part of the Republic, so it could be considered a Civil War.
As for the Galactic Civil War, you're right, it was a rebellion. But that was only the beginning. After Tarkin blew up Alderaan, half the galaxy got mad and turned on the Galactic Empire. They were donating and joining the Rebel Alliance. They basically turned it from a little rebellion to a big war.
I kinda agree. The Galactic Civil War should've been called the Galactic Revolution or something
theNobleTaco it's called the clone wars because obi-wan mentioned the clone wars in ANH.
The Rebel Alliance had a (semi-)proper army. However, the original movies offered a VERY limited view on the wider conflict. You can check the book "Battlefront: Twilight Company" as a canon example though (it's very good).
Basically, they're called the Clone Wars because that war was already established to exist in the original trilogy. The "clone wars" was a random term that George Lucas threw into his script back when he first made Star Wars with no immediate plans to flesh them out. For decades, we knew nothing about them except they somehow involved clones and that Obi Wan was involved.
+Star Wars Explained I know this is not really your thing but many people are trying to help the Twin Suns Foundation and the 501st Legion provide aid to the children's hospital of Orange County, California, USA. The event is called Hyper Reads Drive 2017 and could use some promotional help that you may be able to provide. Maybe you could make a video on this. You can learn more at www.twin-suns.net/donate or ruclips.net/video/-B4ZrgOow_8/видео.html .
Great, comprehensive video! I wish we could see the CIS Senate in more canon sources
Amazing video! Stunning in sound, visuals and content.
You have a nice profile pic
Glory to the empire
This was an amazing summary of the immensely powerful might of the Confederacy of Independent Systems and how they impacted the galaxy in positive ways also because of many of their senate member's ideals on bringing forth a galaxy of equality. I always like to see people who show the CIS credit:) this was a great video!
Didn’t Dooku betray his own people in TCW show?
I'm a believer in the CIS! Count Dooku is my Count!
Nice to hear a female voice once in a while.

I love the cis I love this video
The CIS is my favorite faction in all of Star wars, and this was masterfully crafted...i like the female voice for a change and thanks!
Question: Why did the CIS want to destroy the cloning process on Kamino? (In The Clone Wars series, a few episodes I forgot the names of) Weren't they being controlled by the Sith, (Just like with the Republic) who needed the clones to fulfill their plan to overthrow the Jedi?
That was AMAZING! Thank you so much for introducing us to this cool new channel. I will subscribe!

This video felt like a legitimate documentary while watching xD
The confederacy of independent systems remind me the Tau empire in warhammer 40k !
The music is distracting for this
If Palpatine, Dooku, and the Council weren't conniving and manipulating the war, the Confederacy would have definitely won.
The Senate I dunno the Republic had the Jedi Order leading the army. That's a huge factor
I agree

This is the best and most comprehensive explanation of the CIS yet, short of spending a solid two hours on the wookiepedia! Thanks for featuring the Templin Institute, I'm going to subscribe to their channel right away.
It's stupid how the war between the Rebels vs The Empire was called "The galactic Civil War", but the war between the Republic Vs the confederacy (aka Separatist) was not called a civil war.
viewport That's because the Confederacy of Independant Systems, unlike the Rebel Alliance, was actually a separate and functional government from the Republic. They had already seceded from the Republic (thus becoming a separate country) before the war started, and their initial intent was simply to break off and gain independence, not overthrow the Republic government. However, the Republic attacked geonosis and started the clone wars (between the two countries). In contrast, the Rebel Alliance wasn't a functional or separate government. It's purpose was not to form a separate country, and it never did. It was trying to replace the government of the existing Empire they were part of with a new government, thus making it a civil war. Hope that helps it make a bit more sense.
Both narrators are very good and easy to follow. Thumbs up!
Such a beautiful voice.
Seems like these should be the "good guys" considering what the republic becomes...
tholian assembly and first common wealth fron andromeda
I really like the concept of this video, how it presents this almost as a report by a historian within the universe, considering they act "unaware" about the Sith and Sidious, and only "speculate" about the Death Star's history. It's very cool!
Fun fact: the Death Star was secretly built during the clone wars by both the CIS and Republic. Dooku told the Separatists Council that the Republic was making a similar weapon so they had to build the DS1. Palpatine told the Engineering Corps of the Republic the same thing. The Death Star was built by those two factions that is why we see it almost finished at the end of Episode 3.
I feel bad for the CIS. They never had a chance...
Long live to the CIS
They underestimated the Republic's power.
Yankee Fan101
The republic had disbanded it's Navy and Army while banning the individual systems from arms buildups.
probably didn't help that the leader of their faction was working for the leader of the Republic
The Republic had the high ground.
Everyone loves droids, everyone loves the CIS
Mustafar must be afar
You made quite an accurate description. I appreciate your accurate and unbiased statements. This documentary also highlights some flaws in the confederate doctrine, which could be reexamined and improved for our second coming.
CIS FOR LIFE
To be honest, I think Star Wars would have turned out better if the Confederates won. And, if you think about it, wouldn't it have made more sense color-wise to have the Jedi, with their blue lightsabers, on the Confederate side whose main colors are white and blue? Just sayin'
Wow what an amazing video that was! I can’t wait to see one about the first order in a few years. I now no longer have to show my girlfriend the prequels I can just let her watch this and then we can just start up with the new ones
If she enjoyed them, she's yours forever.
Awesome!!! Can't wait to see them do videos on the organizations like Project Monarch and the Earth Defense Force in the Godzilla universe!!!
Good background music
Background music?
Honestly if you took away the Sith and Sepratist council working against its own government, I think the CIS would have been an amazing faction to fight for.
The speaker sounds like she's just reading the script rather than being genuinely interested or knowledgeable on the CIS.
Nice Video :)
FINALLY! There are far too little videos that shed the light on the CIS past what you see in The prequels or the clones wars series. Despite what my profile pic would lead you to believe, the CIS are my favourite star wars faction by far! I think they where 100% within their right to secede, and it was the REPUBLIC who stared the clone wars by sending spies followed by a massive army of jedi and clones to genonosis
I liked the perspective it was told from. And the shots used as background were pretty nice.
This voice is amazing. You could read the phone book and I would listen.
Aaron Vietor check out The Centropic Oracle podcast!
Stunning video!! The music and breakdown of the Separatists during the Clone Wars. The CIS is definitely my favorite faction along with the Rebel Alliance. Even though their ideals might have been off-track, they did have differing reason, determination, principles, and naturalism to identify the Republic's inward, growing corruption. Portraying the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS/Separatists) and Galactic Republic as cookiecutter villains and heroes does nothing or little to justify their body of motivation, being on either faction usually boiled down to personal opinions/belief/ideals etc. and political/societal influence over one's planet. To me, there are TWO sides, ONE war in the Clone Wars, while faction has a virtue and vice unto themselves. Good and evil are melded by a single goal while still separate in unity itself.
No one's true purpose within a faction should be defined by "just" the galaxy's principles of good and evil from a worldly, political, and/or social point of view. Only the Almighty (or in Star Wars terms, The Force) has the determination to define purpose and human nature according to faction. That is what and how TCW's "Heroes on Both Sides" taught me about the Separatists vs. Republic without looking at it through black-and-white terms, just diversity and independence. Battle of good vs. evil are motivated by one's choices, thoughts, and feelings. One battle cannot win a war and freedom is the right of all sentient beings.
In conclusion, neither "side" won the Clone Wars. The Empire was the "dark horse" in the race through war, power, and control.
The confederacy always have been and always will be my favorite faction.
Epic scope
It's a pity what happened to the CIS _and_ republic, both were being orchestrated by Sheev and would have ended the same way in the end
The Virgin Galactic Republic vs The Chad Confederacy of Independence Systems
I know I am in the *OVERWHELMING* minority, but......I side with the Separatist Alliance! DOWN WITH THE REPUBLIC! Battle droids are awesome! :D
Thanks,
Wonderful narration.
It seems clear the CIS was in the right even though they were maneuvered in every way by Darth Sidious from the start.
Not much was said of the Jedi counsel, but the war brought out the worst in them and turned many against it's own teachings, ending in there complete destruction.
Awesome!!! Can't wait to see them do videos on the organizations like Project Monarch and the Earth Defense Force in the Godzilla universe!!! :)
+StarWarsExplained +TheTemplinInstitute Do u guys think u can do a similar one for The Galactic Republic n the Grand Army of The Republic
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do 3 videos: one on the Confederate States of America in Harry Turtledove’s Southern Victory 10 part book series; one on the German Empire in the same series; and finally, one on the United States of America in the same.
So from a certain point of view the Confederacy of Independent Systems were actually the good guys. I mean they were right about the Galactic Republic.
1,000 years? The Republic existed for over 20,000 years... Get your lore straight.
Hopefully we can fight in the battle of coruscant in Battlefront 2.
i want to see the Battle of Coruscant during the Galactic Civil War. The Empire was defeated at Jakku, but it's final stand would have been on Coruscant.
