MetalJesusRocks I dunno if this is supposed to be a complete collection or not but I actually have a version of Wing Commander 2 that you didn't show in this video.
Working at Sierra was FMV done in high res? Like they had some FMV on dvd with full high-res copy. This was my dream that they would come out with fmv games useing the full res videos.
Wing Comander Prophecy was my favorite game in 1997. Now I have a original sealed Big Box at home. Hard to find after al this years of hardcore Kilrathi hunting. And the hunt still goes on! Cool collection from you. Very impressive 😊
Wing Commander III on the 3DO is definitely one of the best games on the system & just a great game overall. The FMV was so well done & really immersed you in the story. To this day when someone says that all FMV from that era was terrible I can't help but think to myself that they must not have played Wing Commander.
Today's "But will it run Crysis?" was "Will it run Wing Commander?" back in the 90s. So many great memories playing this series, especially the spinoff Strike Commander.
Retro Game Players Me too! But I had a Power PC Macintosh so I couldn't play it :( (edit: Apparently it was also released for Mac according to Wikipedia. That's news to me!)
If you're looking for a more complete collection, they made a second run print of the movie a few years ago on DVD and Bluray. Also, the Wing Commander Academy cartoon series was released on DVD a few years back as well.
The Wing Commander series was one of my favorites! I played them all and got so immersed into the story and game play. I remember being shocked almost devastated by a certain turn of events in the story. It is great when a game can bring out real emotion in you. I wish the series would return!
David Culp Star Citizen is in the works. Unfortunately it isn't a direct sequel, but it is a spiritual successor(made by the same company/dude) and it looks like it is coming up nicely.
Loved Wing Commander II and Privateer. Privateer was such a step up at the time and blew me away. I used to work in a video game rental store in the early to mid 90's and our copy of Wing Commander II came on 15 double density disks. An absolute nightmare to keep track of with people returning it with missing disks but amazingly, at the end of its rental run it was all still intact.
I still fire up my Wing Commander 1-4 games about once a year-year and a half. I think the story and even gameplay hold up. Great video man, I'll probably end up playing wing commander this week now lol.
Your passion for big box PC games always shines through. I see myself collecting a few of those in my future. You have also prompted me to pick up a copy of the the GBA Wing Commander Prophecy game. Thank you for your videos, I truly look forward to them.
This takes me back. I've been on the Wing Commander bandwagon since Day 1, and - like you - based some of my upgrades on whether or not they'd be enough to help me play the latest Wing Commander game. I played every one of the PC games, and even enjoyed Prophecy (which many seemed to dislike). That said, I'm still upset that Privateer never went anywhere. There was so much potential.
I'm still kinda salty about Privateer 2 I know some people say its a Wing Commander game its not at least to me. Privateer 2 had iffy game play and little relation to the WC universe
I loved Wing Commander 3! I got it when it was released for playstation. Mark Hamil was awesome in it. Never got to play the fourth one, but i want to now, more Mark Hamil is always good :) Very nice Wing Commander collection MJ, thanks for sharing.
Yeah, to me DLC is a modern development in gaming. DLC is proportionately small game alteration, like skins, guns, maps, and a couple missions, and they are DOWNLOADED. And the initial appeal was that when you got a game, and if you had the internet, you could expect more periodic inexpensive/free DLC to expand your experience. It is game content that is quickly and easily obtained. But back in the day, I don't recall games ever doing that much. Broadband wasn't a thing yet, so downloading a single image of porn could take several minutes, let alone actual game content. If there was any expansion to the original game content, it was in the form of purchased retail physical media, not downloaded, and it didn't come around very often. I felt fortunate if a game developer released a patch to fix bugs. But any expansion of content meant my mom driving me to Babbage's to buy a box for a highly anticipated expansion pack.
Loved Wing Commander. There were several novels released as well that were good. "End Run" and "Fleet Action" were great! They fill in a lot of background universe. Like the Battle of Earth
I used to work at Software Etc in the mid 90s and still have the pre-sale advertisement box for W. C. 4 Price of Freedom. So amazed to see some of your collection pieces!
Even though I never played these games at the time, I always wondered what they were like and I really liked this video. I think you should consider doing more videos like these. There are so many game series that deserve a video. I would suggest covering some of the following: Tomb Raider, MSR+Project Gotham Racing, Out Run, Soul Calibur, Tekken, Street Fighter and Zelda. These are just a few, but there are so many and you ought to start with the series that have a special meaning to you. Thanks for so many great videos. Greetings from Copenhagen :-)
Been a sub of yours for a while now and I love what you do. This is my favorite game franchise from my childhood. Started off on three at a friends house and got the game for my birthday that year. My dad liked it so much he brought home four the day it came out. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
It was interesting and should be noted that The Kilrathi Saga did not include either of the two add-ons for the first two: Secret Missions, Secret Missions 2: Crusade, Special Operations, and Special Operations 2. They were, however, officially released to be downloaded and installed. Thankful I got them at the time and still have them burned to disc. Love the series, have each and everything you listed minus the WCIII film canister version as I had never even heard of that, and now.... I must seek it out. AMAZING video.
This Harkers back to my child hood. I had all this stuff and remeber the day when I was scrounging up the money for a 8x CD Rom drive and adding 2 mg ram stick to Running WC3. And yes I paid full retail for my ticket to see the movie. I'm surprised on the whole pilgrim plot device and the movie could have been so much more. Grest job!!
The original Wing Commander was the game that got me to buy a sound card for my PC -- the Sound Blaster. Before that, I was just playing the game with the beeps coming out of the internal speaker in the PC. Such a night and day different experience with the proper sound! Loved it.
funny fact, retired adult film star Ginger Lynn appeared in Wing Commander III lol I think this is the only time that this has happened in the history of gaming but I could be wrong ;)

I like how you can hear the *ping* noise in the Wing Commander movie from the enemy sonar. Because sound can travel through space, right? Jürgen Prochnow used his whole Boat experience here. It's also amazing how they shove the wreck of the fighter craft off the carrier and the wreck drops down. There must be quite a gravity source below the carrier for that to happen.
If you weren't around at the time first WC-games came out, it might be hard to understand all the fuss ;) But let me tell you at the time when, let's say, 3 first ones came out. They dropped peoples jaws to floor. They had animation and music, that you would not believe at the time. And nothing else, but high powered PC made it possible. Fantastic presentation, all the stuff you got with the big boxes... That's the truly golden era of PC gaming. And I think a golden era of all gaming, too. I remember seeing them at my friend, who at the time had all the bells and whistles PC, with everything anyone could want. Just the start animation with the orchestra and the sound, blew me away. Hearing that with the top of the line sound card at the time, was something to behold :) A very nice collection MJR!
Loved playing the Wing Commander games and as some others here I was over the top when seeing Wing Commander III with quality of the movie cut scenes that took it to a whole other level. I wonder if this franchise will be ever rebooted properly.
Hey man, I have been watching your show for a long time. Love the content and you seem like the type of dude I would chill and vid out with on the regular. THIS episode however, really rocked. Wing commander is one of my all time favorite franchises. I played a lot of the PC big box games, and remember Sierra fondly from the era you were working there. Thanks for another great episode, for the contributions you made to games I played growing up in nowhere Maine, and for helping preserve this glorious history for others to enjoy in the future. Keep doing what you are doing. Class act sir.
Though I could care less about Wing Commander, you're obvious passion for the franchise made this very interesting and enjoyable. It was cool to see all the different editions and their add-ins. Played the original as a kid.
I'm so sad PC games don't do these big boxes anymore..They are so COOL! All the extra stuff they include really shows how much they loved working on it, and how much they loved the franchise
I agree, but disagree with this..I shouldn't have to buy a special edition of the game thats worth 100s of dollars to get something like a map or stuff
omg Privateer 2.. i lost sooooo many hours on that game, that fmv was amazing at the time. It's basically what got me in both PC gaming and space sims... good times
Dude wing commander 3! I remeber playing this on my 3do when I was a kid. Im 36 now and have fond memories of this franchise. Actually makes me wanna get my 3do back
This was the most epic PC game series from the 90's IMHO. Loved every one of these games and played the crap out of them. The hard drive requirements, especially for Wing Commander 2, were nuts at the time. I think WC2 with its speech pack was about 25-30 megabytes. My hard drive was 130 total! I did think the packaging on Wing Commander 1 was very misleading at the time.. They wrote "what you see is what you play" yet the game really did not look as pretty as the box art. I remember calling Origin and asking them how to turn the detail settings up to get to what the box looked like, and they fessed up to me :). What sold me ultimately was the solid gameplay and story. Super Wing Commander was an awesome port on the 3DO played a lot of that one too.
Very interesting vid! this was always one of those series that i avoided because i didn't know the history/story and it seemed like that was a major component of the games. Interesting to hear a "postmortem" from a true fan. Also, very glad to have the mention of the movie version; it was definitely a "cable classic" for many years; delicious pulpy fun :)
Wing Commander was one of my first pc games. A great video game that was definitely inspired by Star Wars... which in a way made sense that they got Mark Hammil to do 3 & 4. Also the humor that Tom Wilson (better known as Biff from the movie "Back To The Future" )brought some great humor to the series was a great addition. I also own the Ps1 versions of WC 3&4... it seemed like the Pc versions ran a little smoother.... but still great that they made it available for home consoles as well.
Seriously, though: Luke, Biff, and Alex in the same "movie"? Sold! The idea that two cult icons and one of the best actors in the history of film were brought in to make my favorite game series even better? Yeah, I was in heaven.
Awesome! I bought the Kilrathi Saga box at a fleamarket a few months ago, but I had no idea that it was rare. Not that it matters, I'm not selling it anyway, but fun to know that I got a good deal for once.
Great video. I owned many games in the series and enjoyed the movie. I had the original running on a 386sx 16mhz with only 2mb of ram so the joystick hand did not appear. When I upgraded my pc to 4mb of ram I saw the hand and it was amazing.
Dude I have been hoping you do something about your Wing Commander collection on this channel. My favorite gaming franchise of alllll time. I only have a few big boxes left to find before I have my entire childhood collection back. Great big box pc games here!
Wing Commander back in the 90s was a BIG deal, games like this turned people into PC gamers for life. What was the submarine game that had all the FMV and you got to choose how your character responded when talking to other people? I remember being blown away by that too. 90s PC games are a favorite of mine and I usually stick to console, some of them are just so strange it was literally the wild west of gaming I love it
My first experience of Wing Commander was on the Amiga and that was a very clunky affair to say the least. I then bought a 3DO and Super Wing Commander was an absolute gem 👌🏼 and that remains my favourite Wing Commander of all time although 3 comes pretty close.
I was a huge WC fan back in the day. my copy of WC4 was a DVD special edition that came with a DVD-ROM Drive and Decoder board (Before most computers could handle DVD decoding on their own)
Huge wing commander fan here, had all the pc games, even got the advance preview in the theatres for the movie, and I also own it, very underrated movie
Awesome stuff! 👍🏻 That "SUPER Wing Commander" is still a mystery to me, and I still have to watch this as a YT playthrough. I know there was supposed to be a RTS game, I think in the early 2000s, but that project died for several reasons. This franchise needs a hard-reboot, or a soft-reboot-continuation, one way or another, there's potential for more games. Personaly I liked the interaction with the characters, for different situations/outcomes, pros & cons in battle, or romance, the most, that stood out. Something I loved in "Front Mission 3" as well. It's something that nearly vanished today, unless It's an RPG.
I find it so crazy how he genuinely still enjoys these old games. If I went back and played old school games I'm sure I'd think they're super shit because they look so bad.
Great great great game series!! I played only the first one on an old 386.. I recently subscribed to EA Origin Access and now have access to the games...no tweaking with DosBox required... the original games just work! It’s amazing how I just picked up the old one again and was able to play it relatively well...
Wing Commander III was the first WC game i ever played and it blew my mind wide open. I was completely immersed in this universe and when i heard IV was coming out i was so hyped, shame i had to play it on my ageing 486 pc. Nevertheless i still played it and loved it.
Gosh I was such a huge Wing Commander fan. I still have all the of the manuals and guts from the boxes, including the Kilrathi Saga stuff. Sadly I don't have the boxes themselves. When you get older "life gets in the way". Big Regret.....
26snoopy82 yup! It is a spiritual successor, so unfortunately I doubt it will be tied to Wing Commander in anything other than easter eggs. That being said, people keep whining about it not being officially out yet, but it looks badass as hell! Plus they have dev logs damn near every week. I say they should take their sweet time to craft an excellent game.
GAMES SHOWN: Wing Commander (1990) Super Wing Commander Wing Commander II: Vengeance of Kilrathi Wing Commander Academy Wing Commander Armada Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom Wing Commander: Prophecy Wing Commander: Privateer The Kilrathi Saga Privateer 2: The Darkening Wing Commander Arena
oh man i totally forgot about that wing commander movie, i think i saw that in the movie theater back when it came out. i knew it was going to suck but it was wing commander so i had to see it, lol.
So I couldn't post this on Twitter cause it's too long. But was able to post other fun stuff about these tittles and things revolving around them. Wing Commander III was the game that got me into the Panasonic 3DO. It was also the tittle that introduced me to Ginger Lynn. Flash forward several years later, in 1998 I was living in City of Industry and heard that Ginger Lynn was going to be at Spearmint Rhino there. I went and I was cheering like the nerd that I am. I won a bid on a piece of garment she was auctioning on stage... AHEM!!!! Well, she told me to collect it after her performance at the autograph booth. When I went to collect she asked me what was my favorite movie with her in it. You can imagine the look on her face when I said "The Wing Commander Series" She gave me a huge hug... and yes, she was still naked. And then the expression on her face changed further and she asked me: "So... Before tonight... You've..." And I interrupted and said "I had never seen you in the nude before. I'm here cause I thought you were great in Wing Commander III and Prophecy." She had me sit next to her for a while as she signed autographs and met fans. We talked through that time about her other non adult entertainment movies she's been in. I have to say that she was such a nice person and I'm so stoked to this day that I got to meet her. I haven't met anyone else from the WC series, and if I get to meet Mark Hamill, it would be Wing Commander III that I would ask him to autograph for me. Thanks for this video.
I vividly remember the release of the download only, free stand alone, WC: Secret Ops. The game was part of a Origin experiment with new distribution models. It was released in weekly episode packs every Wednesday;, they took forever to download on my dialup modem - they were either like 30mb or 90mb every week, after a much larger download that first week. They even offered the characters recorded dialogue as a separate optional speech pack download. As someone who frequented the usenet board I remember this was like really the last hoorah for the franchise, we got the movie and then that was really it.
really into the choices you make in some of the wing commander games, it was pretty much the mass effect of the 90s which is awesome. I know I can play them off gog.com but I like to collect pc box games, thanks for the vid jesus
Awwww... I had like half of that, also lotsa posters. Much was lost, a few boxes, guides and the card game are still left. the card game never made any sense to male at all but i loved it. Would love to jave a time capsule for playing privateer
Excellent. I still have Wing Commander III for mac from years ago, Mac. Only got so far in the game as the Mac got ripped off. Loved what I played and I do like the Movie too. Nice vid, keep up the great work
I loved the ms-dos vga graphics back in the day and was kinda jealous. The only version I've played was the Amiga version though. As always great content, thank you & rock on!!!
I miss big box PC games. So may of them had cool stuff in them. I found my WWII Online box the other day and it had technical manuals for all vehicles from the war listed.
I owned Wing Commander 3 back in the 90's when I was around 15 years old. I stood my girlfriend up several times 'cause I was playing this game on my father's Power Mac. Don't know what ever happened to it. I wish I still had it!
The Wing Commander series is why I backed Star Citizen and am really looking forward to even more content than what we can play already. Those complaining about how long the game is taking just don't know about or understand game development. It's only been in development for 5 years. Compare than to other games like Diablo 3 that took 11 years, L.A. Noire took 7 years, Grand Theft Auto 5 took 7 years, StarCraft 2 took 7 years, Shenmue took 6 years.
I have 3, 4, 5, and the Kirathi Saga. I still have vivid memories playing the Heart of Tiger. It drained my 486 DX4-100. This game really made me want to buy a Pentium. And the memory it needs was a lot back in those days. It takes two minutes to load one mission. I was 13 and I barely read English. I had to pause the video to study very sentence. On the final mission, I couldn't understand the word "cloak" and got stuck in the space for hours before I figure out how to proceed to Kirathi homeworld. I spent countless hours to watch every cutscene. Then I was disappointed by Prophecy and the movie. Wing Commander games are still my most-beloved collection. Strangely, my boxes did not come with any maps in your video. Maybe it's a regional difference.
If you like these videos about old PC games, please give this a LIKE and SHARE. Thanks so much!
Megadeth.
MetalJesusRocks I dunno if this is supposed to be a complete collection or not but I actually have a version of Wing Commander 2 that you didn't show in this video.
Hi MJR, you don't have the special DVD-ROM edition of the Wing Commander 4, which has DVD-quality video?
Working at Sierra was FMV done in high res? Like they had some FMV on dvd with full high-res copy. This was my dream that they would come out with fmv games useing the full res videos.
That is an awesome collection!!! :D

I completely agree! I've played the game on every system and the 3do was the best port for Wing Commander 3.
Today's "But will it run Crysis?" was "Will it run Wing Commander?" back in the 90s. So many great memories playing this series, especially the spinoff Strike Commander.
ohhh Strike commander. Dayum yes that was a good game. Probably my fav flight sim of all time.
Great stuff. This really took me down a nostalgia highway. Loved Wing Commander and Privateer.
When I first saw Wing Commander 3 in the store, I was like WOAH Mark Hamill is in this!!
Retro Game Players Me too! But I had a Power PC Macintosh so I couldn't play it :( (edit: Apparently it was also released for Mac according to Wikipedia. That's news to me!)
Marcus!! Get back to work!
And the guy in the lower left looks like Sting.
Retro Game Players I jus wrote that then saw your post lol or similar
His career was going really well at that time
Loved Privateer and damn I got so into Privateer 2 Clive freakin Owen man!!
If you're looking for a more complete collection, they made a second run print of the movie a few years ago on DVD and Bluray.
Also, the Wing Commander Academy cartoon series was released on DVD a few years back as well.
Dude... You are a proud for all the pc community. Great collection!
This brings back so much good memories...thank you
So glad you enjoyed it

This is an absolutely fantastic overview of the series Metal Jesus, thank you!!

DarkRaptor99 Agreed
Oh wow I never knew it was on SNES. Wing Commander 3 was my fav PC game growing up. Loved it. With a force feedback joystick it was awesome!
I loved Wing Commander 3! I got it when it was released for playstation.
Mark Hamil was awesome in it. Never got to play the fourth one, but i want to now, more Mark Hamil is always good :)
Very nice Wing Commander collection MJ, thanks for sharing.
Don't kid yourself. Modern DLC is nothing like complete PC expansion packs from back in the day.
DURRRRHURRRR your name pairs perfect with that statement and I agree 100%.

The crazy thing Origin did an episodic expansion with Wing commander prophecy, but like you mentioned broad band wasn't exactly common yet.
@@DiGiTyDarKMaN I read it in Ace Ventura's voice.
Loved Wing Commander. There were several novels released as well that were good. "End Run" and "Fleet Action" were great! They fill in a lot of background universe. Like the Battle of Earth

Hey MJR, I think you've made a lot of Wingnuts happy today. I have loads of love for this series, thanks for showing the love.

funny fact, retired adult film star Ginger Lynn appeared in Wing Commander III lol I think this is the only time that this has happened in the history of gaming but I could be wrong ;)

Oh yeah! Keep this nostalgic games alive and keep making this type of videos. Excelent job man!
What about the Wing Commander Academy? It was the animated series from 1996.
Tony O. No one likes to talk bout that.
Fantastic show. A lot more serious than a lot of saturday morning cartoons were back then. Loved it along with Exo-Squad and Battletech.
Hey man, I have been watching your show for a long time. Love the content and you seem like the type of dude I would chill and vid out with on the regular. THIS episode however, really rocked. That's what the collectors editions are for
I agree, but disagree with this..I shouldn't have to buy a special edition of the game thats worth 100s of dollars to get something like a map or stuff
Instead of big boxes you get loot boxes.
Thank you very much for this travel in time ! Wing commander is a great franchise.
this is my favorite game series of all time
Toss-up for me between WCII and Privateer for favorite title.
Tekt0nix agreed, those were the golden years for the series.
omg Privateer 2.. i lost sooooo many hours on that game, that fmv was amazing at the time.
Love your channel dude. Good vibes always
OH MY GOD!!! Wing Commander totally changed the way I was playin' at the time. I LOVED this saga.. And Mark Hamill in 3 and 4 totally ROCKS
I was obsessed with these games back in the day
Liked in the first 5seconds purely for your awesome megadeth T-shirt lol 🤘🤘
Megadeth put on a great show! They rocked it hard at the Tacoma Dome
MetalJesusRocks Cool :) I saw them last year at download festival :) 🤘🤘
MetalJesusRocks I have the exact same shirt from when they were in Norway.. great band, record and show!
Great video ! I remember those well and had so much fun playing them :)
3DO version of WC3 is hands down the best version. I highly recommend it!
To me this rivals your GOLD BOX SSI collection!!...good on you!!!!! thx again for another great video!
hey hey metal jesus , awesome video man , wing commander on snes was the first sealed game that i added too my collection
Wing commander 2 came with my first cdrom. That got me started on the series. I bought 3 and got 4 with my DVD drive
I played WC 3 and 4 on the Playstation, loved those games, loved them to bits.
Excellent video. The Wing Commander games on the 3DO were my favorite.
That "SUPER Wing Commander" is still a mystery to me, and I still have to watch this as a YT playthrough.
Ahh wing commander I played the SNES version quite a bit as a kid. That got me into games like homeworld, and freelancer
Great great great game series!! I played only the first one on an old 386..
I recently subscribed to EA Origin Access and now have access to the games...no tweaking with DosBox required... the original games just work! It’s amazing how I just picked up the old one again and was able to play it relatively well...
I love these games! Prophecy is my favourite!
I love those games. I hear Chris is now making a huge game called star citizen.
Michael Milligan I agree! Plus they have been making it since 2012 I want it to be finished by now. But I agree take as much time to fix bugs, etc.
GAMES SHOWN:
Wing Commander (1990)
Super Wing Commander
Wing Commander II: Vengeance of Kilrathi
Wing Commander Academy
Wing Commander Armada
Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger
Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom
Wing Commander: Prophecy
Wing Commander: Privateer
The Kilrathi Saga
Privateer 2: The Darkening
Wing Commander Arena
I had Wing Commander 3 for the Playstation. The loading times were insane, but I felt like I was playing a movie.
oh man i totally forgot about that wing commander movie, i think i saw that in the movie theater back when it came out. i knew it was going to suck but it was wing commander so i had to see it, lol.
great vid..brings back some great times...
It just shows how much you get for your money ,buying a game then and now
A pile of worthless cardboard and dead-tree manuals. If it didn't have monetary value I'd happily throw it in a bonfire.
Love your channel! Rock on :)
Do more game sagas like this, but include more gameplay and more of your opinions on each.. u rock MJR!
I remeber having the originals on diskettes with included blueprint posters of the ships. It was so nice
Played the SNES game growing, it's still one of my favorites. Always wanted to play the PC games but never had the chance. And the movie is a classic!
Hey dude, great video.
always great content from the metal Jesus!
Thanks so much :)
MetalJesusRocks 8
Excellent. I still have Wing Commander III for mac from years ago, Mac. Only got so far in the game as the Mac got ripped off. Loved what I played and I do like the Movie too. Nice vid, keep up the great work
This series needs a revival
With the ACE COMBAT team giving it pep
I loved the ms-dos vga graphics back in the day and was kinda jealous. The only version I've played was the Amiga version though. As always great content, thank you & rock on!!!
I miss big box PC games. So may of them had cool stuff in them. I found my WWII Online box the other day and it had technical manuals for all vehicles from the war listed.
This looks pretty fun. Nice collection as always MetalJesusRocks. I might have to buy the 3DO version.
Retro Basement Gaming & Anime I can vouch for the 3DO version. It's excellent!
Sounds good, I will have to grab a copy off of good old ebay.
Wing Commander rules baby!
Awesome collection Jason!
I owned Wing Commander 3 back in the 90's when I was around 15 years old. I stood my girlfriend up several times 'cause I was playing this game on my father's Power Mac. Don't know what ever happened to it. I wish I still had it!
Are you going to play Star Citizen ?
I'm following the development of the game closely... Looks interesting so far!
you can play star citizen right now I'm pretty sure
