It's interesting that 'The Hobbit' was published in the same year Disney released their first movie length cartoon: 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarves'. That was 1937. A good year for children's fantasy.
I truly love Tolkien; and I love The Silmarillion. Nevertheless I will give you some (unsolicited) advice: Read and reread Tolkien. But postpone as long as possible reading The Silmarillion. Read it after you have read everything else by Tolkien. Instead I suggest the following: The annotated hobbit, Leaf by Niggle, Sir Gawain and the green knight, Pearl and Sir Orfeo (this is a translation by Tolkien), The Father Christmas letters, The book of lost tales (2 volumes).

I didn't realize those were both the same year. I guess that really was a seminal year for fantasy.

Thank you for that. I think I may try to follow your advice.
