two words, "Chinese knockoffs"'. If I remember correctly, when I was a kid, in my neighborhood almost every kid had videogame console in their home. I would hear them playing Mario or Contra. But the sad part was that they were playing on bootleg consoles (cheap Chinese knockoffs). This was back in 1998. India was already filled with these clones. And people were buying them at a cheaper price. From a business point of view Nintendo didn't find it worth investing in Indian market. But times have changed rapidly since 2008. After mobile phone boom Nintendo should rethink about their investment opportunities in India. I don't like how India is heading towards gaming (in case of mobile gaming). Indians deserve better than these cheap mobile phone games with pay to win models.
The primary issue is not that cheaper knockoffs are there, but that international prices are too high for the low Rupee value... and the buyer base is limited and have low purchasing power in comparison to even China. If anyone is to be blamed, its the Indian traditions that scorn people for playing games as a type cast of immaturity etc. This wont change anytime soon, and as long as this is the case, they would never invest here since language conversions, new server additions etc. are not worth the investment for the few players they may get in India. Not much money can be made if their business lies in purchase of games rather than the console and Indians cant really afford to be repeat customers over several years

I am a Pokemon fan. I upload Pokemon gaming videos on RUclips lately. I don't know the financial status of most of the commenters here. But as a student and a fan of Nintendo consoles I would like to share something realistic from my own perspective and probably the perspective of many common children like me. You see I am a science student in class 11th currently. Now as you know in 24 hrs I am out of my home for about 12 hrs only for school and tution almost 7 days a week with few exceptions. So playing the games without studying is a lot of hectic. If I play once a week, I just do it a lot and then upload videos by breaking the raw one. I have been playing Pokemon Scarlet on my PC by emulator and it almost works fine with recent updates. Now I don't like piracy. I would love to give some support to developers. But see the sum that is spend behind my education is around ₹4000+ which is my school fees excluding tuitions and accessories. A single Pokemon Scarlet/Violet Cartridge costs around $60 which is almost ₹5000. Let alone a Nintendo OLED which is $400 which is on Flipkart is ₹32000-₹40000. After all these expenses you see for mediocre students and children who are prime targets , console gaming becomes a dream or rather a status symbol. Nintendo would never succeed if prices aren't dropped for regular common men like us. And I am leaving the fact many Indians don't even have a proper smartphone for contact. Console gaming becomes more expensive than education itself.....
Nintendo does not do marketing, if they targeted Tier 1 cities in India they can easily sell their console to the target demographic of 10 to 18 years of age. Yes the games are expensive even for tier 1 standards but I believe, if parents are buying Ipads, Iphones and other accessories this is another cheaper alternative for entertainment. No need for 18 year olds to buy a gaming PC for 1 lac or a big console for 80k that they can't have portable use for. Nintendo can heavily capitalize in the Indian market but they won't because, their Nintendo they can't market or run a business but yeah they can make great games
