What's really scary is that even products designed for barrier repair can still be irritating depending on how damaged your barrier is. My barrier has been damaged for 8 plus months, and even products like Krave Beauty's Great Barrier Relief made my skin feel like it was on fire. I got that way from trying to overtreat maskne, and the only thing that has gradually helped over time is the La Roche Posay Cica Baume, slathered on twice a day. I also switched cleansers to the La Roche Posay super gentle wash for Eczema (it does have niacinamide in it but it didn't seem to bother my skin, I had been using cerave cleansers for many years but they burn now). I haven't even been able to wear sunscreen, chemical or mineral for a whole month plus now. It's been a huge switch since I have oily acne prone skin but for months I've been bone dry and sensitive and still acne prone. So basically, choose your 'barrier repair' carefully, some of those products might only help later on in the healing process or as a preventative measure.

i suffered the worst irritation few years ago when i didn't know that my skin cannot tolerate alcohol and hyaluronic acid. it made my skin barrier damaged to the point i can't even tolerate a mineral sunscreen. what's even worse is that my job requires me to be outdoor most of the time. i had to wear a hat, sunglass and face mask to make sure that i cover as much skin as possible. it was my worst nightmare. i stopped all of my skincare products and only use cleanser & ceramide cream for a solid 2 months until my skin barrier completely healed. my 2nd barrier damage was last year when kbeauty brands put exfoliating acid in literally every products and claimed that it was very mild and safe for daily use. i even saw a sunscreen with glycolic acid in it 🤦 after that 2nd barrier damage, i only use PHA to exfoliate. now that i understand my skin better, it is a little bit easier to treat damage barrier. i hope you can always make this type of video. lots of love ❤

Hats and sleeves and covering from the sun is an excellent sun protection method! Especially agree with avoiding the high uv times of day, and also you can check online what the uv level is in your area that day so you can plan how much time to spend outside.
For those who find mineral sunscreen more soothing on their skin than chemical, I really like the eltamd uv physical sunscreen (water resistant), or pipette mineral sunscreen. They are both simple formulas and easy on the skin.
Once my barrier improved a bit I started seeing even more improvement in my skin when using these sunscreens! Protecting my skin from the sun makes a huge difference in keeping my skin healthy and keeping my moisture barrier strong!

I'm going through damaged skin barrier now, hence I'm here trying to salvage myself using your recommendations. 😁 I over-cleansed/over-exfoliated myself. A few days ago, I cleaned my face 4 times a day (after re-doing makeup a few times, I'm terrible at makeup and tried to put some on for an event), including using exfoliating toner in my night time skincare routine. My skin then became super sensitive, angry, irritated, and breaks out into small, tender bumps. I thought the bumps were soon-to-be acne spots, so, foolishly, I exfoliated my skin again and put on retinol particularly on the bumpy areas. This aggravates my skin even more, and I end up with red, blistering, tender sores all over my face, and nothing works on them. Like, literally, nothing. Even cleansing my face is extremely painful now. I can only pat my face gently with water, and put on tea tree-manuka honey healing balm on it (I swear it's not even a skincare product, more like balm with healing/soothing properties for wounds). So here I am, watching this vid while ordering some of the products mentioned in this vid online, as this is 2am and I cannot sleep due to the pain on my face.

You can’t see me but I’m nodding along with your video. I have atopic dermatitis (and a sun allergy), born with it, and one of the contributing factors for it is some sort of skin barrier dysfunction or abnormality. I can keep rashes and allergic reactions and the like at bay by avoiding irritants but my moisture barrier is defective in itself so I’m permanently “repairing” it. I don’t itch or flake usually and I can use actives (aha/bha/adapalene) very carefully on a schedule. But I also go to bed looking like my cheeks got a sunburn the nights I do, red, tight and burning. It’s always gone in the morning so it’s not a problem but yeah, although purely cosmetic (my cheeks aren’t more sensitive than the rest of my face usually nor do I have breakouts or capillaries or anything from the flushing) it’s still looks alarming and like I cooked myself in the shower.
I did not know this/walk myself through this reasoning five years ago when I started breaking out like crazy so I went full on French pharmacy acne-fighting routine. That was a mistake. And I didn’t stop until smiling made my nasolabial folds crack and bleed in winter. Good times!

Solid gold advice in this video! 🌟 I have a "chronic barrier dysfunction" with rosacea, and NIOD Modulating Glucosides is the best thing I've ever put on my face. It's one of a kind! Love to see it recommended in this kind of video.
I always focus on bland products that are hydrating and moisturizing, this is what works for my skin best. And I learned how to do this thanks to your advice Kelly! I also really appreciate the encouragement to listen to your skin and do what you think is right. There's a lot of judgment on the internet about the "right" way to treat sensitive skin, and it truly is individual. Once I stopped listening to others and listened to my skin I finally saw improvement.

Hi fellow chronic barrier dysfunction buddie! Atopic dermatitis is joining the chat, how did I not know about the modulating glucosides until right this moment? I’m gonna hunt down a retailer that ships to my country and has it in stock.

@@AwakingOceanborn hello! Best of luck in finding it in your country, I truly love the NIOD Modulating Glucosides serum. Not only does it help calm my skin immediately, but it also has helped to strengthen my skin over time. I still get rosacea flares from my triggers, but my skin adapts and recovers more quickly and with less irritation. Love that stuff so much I always try to get the word out about it. ❤️
Also hypochlorous acid spray found at the drugstore can be calming as well, but I'm not sure if it's good for atopic dermatitis. This is the ingredient in the tower 28 sos spray (not sure if that's only available in the US) which is sold at a high markup. Might be something else you want to look into!

i was number 4 HARDCORE, every single thing at all was making it react. i was breaking out in ways i never have (i dont struggle from acne, aside from random pimples here and there), i was oily, i tried every single product for like BABIES, everything that said no irritation. for a while i didn’t know if my skin was purging or if my skin was damaged for the first couple months, but when i finally understood i needed to repair my moisture barrier, eventually, i was able to heal. after trial and error. things that had moisturized me before were irritating my skin. i started using the skinfix+ barrier repair serum and moisturizer, as well as their oil cleanser and after 2 months i felt like my skin was all healed, i tried one gentle active, NOPEEEEE, cue my skin freaking out again. after 6 months of purely focusing on repairing my barrier, finally my skin had completely healed. i have ZERO affiliation with skinfix at all, but this was my holy grail skin saviour. it has the ceramides, the lipids, etc. then i could bring back in my retinol, and my skin could start to transform for the better. thank you soooo much for this information. this happened to me 2 years ago and i literally couldn’t find any good info like this video. i wanted to ask: when does the cosrx snail essence/snail all in one cream expire? i had to give it up during my time of healing, (even though it should have just helped haha), and i still have most of both products left but i loved them at first !!!!! wondering if i need to replace them.

Buy oil serum. Or good face oil. Every second evening just wash your face, pat it dry, then put oil serum and then some thick barrier cream. When you put water/ hydration on your skin all the good lipids you put afterwards just cannot build on your skin because of water under oils. It’s the best way to repair your skin barrier. I'd go with how your skin feels. I had problems with my skin in the past when it looked perfectly fine but felt burn-y and sensitive, different than it usually feels. Your skin is trying to tell you something.

@@laynaaa I guess I'm just not sure how to treat it since it's not red or irritated or dry

@@MercenaryCupcake I get it, everyone is different. I'd go with a very basic, "boring" routine - gentle cleanser, moisturiser, SPF during the day. No retinol or acids. Everything fragrance free. Plus maybe something very soothing like Niod modulating glucosides.
