    What you said about hydration 🔥🔥this is SO true. Hydration and humectants are really absolutely fundamental and crucial for the skin’s integrity. There is in my mind almost never too much hydration and that’s why I adore essences and toners and layering multiple thin layers of hydration. It makes a huge difference on the overall skin health and the glowiness of the skin. I have combo, inflammatory prone acne skin and which tends to easily get dehydrated and very sensitive and hydration is my favorite thing, I adore essences and toners; to plump my skin (i am almost 39) and honestly i have very little wrinkles and i am pretty sure this has to do with skin hydration and obsessive daily wear of spf 50 plus reappliying it thouroughly.

      @@KellyDriscoll absolutely! And it’s a very good preventative measure for little fine lines to not deepen and become permanent, and even just lines that are already there, simply plumping the skin with humectants make them lot less visible.

    Kelly! You really knocked this one out of the park! I related to every single one of your points, all gleaned through my own bouts with broken barriers and overblown credit card bills. A few thoughts to corroborate your observations:
    #1: Double-cleansing is fine, but I felt like I HAD to do it, even though I'm a guy who doesn't wear makeup or water-resistant sunscreen. Since I streamlined to a single gentle cleanser for a decent duration every night, my skin has been happier. Do it if you NEED it; otherwise, skip it if your skin is doing fine!
    #2: I did eventually learn not to let all my products dry down. For me, it came down to I just didn't like the extra "friction" of fingers swiping across a mostly dry face. Plus, it's faster!
    #3: Hydration makes everything better: better absorption, better plumpness, delayed/minimized onset of static lines, better glow, and just a better all-day feel. But you CAN overdo it, so find your sweet spot.
    #4: How many winter breakouts did I have trying to find the right RICH moisturizer (because I thought that's what I needed) when the reality is my skin LOATHES products with too many fatty acid barrier constituents. For me, five ceramides, cholesterol, and other fatty acids is just TOO much; I get irritated skin and red bumps. It's funny that you flashed the Vegreen 730 moisturizer as that segment began, because that's what I found works for MY skin all year long. It's a PERFECT mid-weight smear. So don't buy what you THINK you need; buy what your skin actually LIKES.
    #5: Seasons do matter. Find some go-tos for every annual shift. And it's fine if most of your routine stays the same. We're all different and you may find you don't have to make drastic changes--just a few subtle tweaks here and there.
    #6: I also had to try ALL the things, and it did not go well. Just because something has great marketing points doesn't mean you have to have it. Identify the products that work with your skin and address your specific needs, then stick with them! You will save a lot of money (and face-ache) in the process.
    #7: I luckily never felt the need for super expensive products. I think I bought a $120 face oil once (that I didn't need because my face doesn't actually like or need face oils), but that was as far as it went. You can create a great routine from inexpensive brands, especially from Korea, which are often now cheaper than U.S. drugstore.
    #8: Just because something worked for your favorite content creator doesn't mean it will work for you! So don't go buying wholesale routines before you figure out whether or not you A. need them or B. they will get along with your skin. Pay attention to your own triggers and weed out products based on your personal experience.
    #9: Stop beating your face up. You don't need 8 actives in your a.m. and p.m. routines. Let your skin breathe. It can only take so much. Your skin barrier will be so much more agreeable and only goodness flows from that.
    #10: Notice what foods trigger your face issues. How many times did I think a skincare product broke me out when in reality it was the crap I had eaten for four straight days?

    • @KellyDriscoll
      @KellyDriscoll  4 месяца назад +2

      I love these perspectives! Especially number 10, it's super individual but food and even some medication and vitamins have been worse for breakouts than skincare for me! Being in tune with that is so important!

    A lesson that I learned, and something that has almost become a mantra for me when I’m struggling with an issue is this: sometimes the cause of the problem isn’t skincare, and oftentimes the solution to the problem isn’t skincare. My skin is very reactive, so when I’m kind of flared up, it’s easy to think “Ok, what product am I reacting to now?” Or is it the frequency of use, or something like that? And if I just do enough research, I’ll find that miracle product that will soothe my skin and calm everything down. But, of course, there are tons of other reasons why my skin gets grumpy. And if I start switching up my skincare, that might make the problem worse, or at least more confusing! Most of the time, the answer to my skin problem is for me to just chill out, stay consistent with my skincare (which is already simple and soothing), and-more than anything else-give it time. And best of all, it’s free!

    • @KellyDriscoll
      @KellyDriscoll  4 месяца назад +1

      Oh that's good! The solution isn't always skincare, it's easy to get caught up in the cycle of trying to buy our way out of an issue but you're right sometimes there's deeper stuff we need to be working on that could be influencing our skin.

    There are some exceptions to damp skin & layering. When using low pH acids like glycolic acid or salicyiic - I always let them sit on skin. I do not leave my skin damp and immediately go to layering next serum. And the same actually applies for ascorbic acid (pure vit C) - it is best to let is absorb properly. Otherwise I do the damp skin as well :) But in case it is low Ph product, I wait few min up to 10 min.

    • @CherylE6119
      @CherylE6119 4 месяца назад +1

      @pocchakko I would think vitamin C derivatives are fine to layer faster (if in serum form). The lower pH products (or active vitamin C) is best applied to dry skin to avoid irritation. Glycolic acid is a smaller molecule so if the skin is damp it can penetrate deeper and possibly be more irritating. I feel it's more about the pH of those products which vitamin C derivatives should be more neutral and not acidic.

    We always hear the skin RUclips experts talk so highly about the wonders of Hyaluronic acid for dry skin. You were the first one that I heard talking that it may not be so good for dehydrated skin. My skin is very similar to yours. Why did you say that “gel like moisturizers, with Hyaluronic acid was not good for your skin”? Thank you Kelly! I am learning SO much with you!

    • @KellyDriscoll

      I'm actually going to have a video that discusses popular HA products and I go into why the ingredient isn't always super hydrating so look out for that next week. But in short, HA is a molecule that can pull hydration close to the surface of your skin and if the conditions are right (the environment is dry, skin barrier is weak, the moisturizer isn't occlusive enough) the hydration evaporates. So for me in the experience I shared here in the video, all those conditions were met and the HA made my skin dehydrated!

    • @CherylE6119
      @CherylE6119 4 месяца назад +1

      This might be an A, B conversation and I should C my way out but......I follow Dr Shereene Idriss and she states HA is such a buzz word that everyone is familiar with and so it sells product. It's frustrating it is in so much skincare!! She prefers glycerin and other humectants. Yes I agree if there isn't enough moisture for the HA to draw from, it will make your skin drier. That's why HA always should be applied to damp skin.
      Thanks Kelly! Excellent video!! 😊

    I especially agree with the last point. Having figured out an effective routine for myself, I have also discovered that my acne is directly linked to my gut health, hormones and nerves, so no matter how stellar my routine is, internal processes do their damage occasionally - I am simply more confident that I can manage it better. I have a separate routine for such occasions, know how long it will take to bounce back, know which ingredients I need to keep out of my routine for a while (niacinamide wrecks my skin when it's sensitive). And cutting out sugar and dairy has switched my acne-control to easy mode - it has made a tremendous difference.

    Holla Kelly, I very much agree about the importance of hydration, keeping in mind what your goal is with your skincare, being consistent with what you use to see results in your goals and having a balance between the active ingredients and the health of the skin barrier, It is also very important that the products you are buying do not exceed your budget, because if you do not take that into account you cannot be consistent with your routine and all that learning also took me a long time to learn. Another thing that I have been learning is that my skin changes as the years go by, because now that I am over 40 years old my skin is more delicate than when I was 30 and I have to use gentler products to get the benefits I am looking for and another point too Importantly, sunscreen along with maintaining a healthy skin barrier is the basis for success in what I am looking for with my routine. I found this video very important and useful for those who are starting to put together their skincare routine. Thank you and I hope you are very well 😘

    my observation/hypothesis is that switching things up works wonders from time to time. and I don’t mean products, but more so the routine itself. for example, I guess you as a skinfluencer with a lot of things to try&test can sometimes make your skin extremely happy by going shortcut, like simplifying and also using old favourites. while someone who’s very basic may benefit from adding steps&products. nothing is and endgame, but sometimes when you feel like your skin is having none of it, whatever you’re doing, you may want to try a rather contrasting route for a while. reasonably so, of course, not like getting two steps higher in tretinoin dosage or putting away all of the jars&bottles, but just really changing habitual routine while still thinking of your skin needs

      Layer a lightweight toner on your skin a few times. You don't need to add a lot of different products to achieve a high level of hydration. The key is to find the texture that works best for your skin type! That way you can stick to the activities that work for you and not complicate your routine too much. Maybe Soon Jung Relief Toner or Round Lab Doko Toner would be good. Isntree Green Toner is also incredibly light.

    I just turned 42. Some of the things I’ve learned, I always double cleanse no matter what. If I’m not wearing makeup, I’m still exposed to dirt and pollution and I want to cleanse it out as much as I can.
    Learn about ingredients. Educate yourself. Trends aren’t always the best thing. Do what is best for your skin.
    Get acclimated with sunscreen early. It makes a HUGE difference later on in life.
    Skincare can help so much, but don’t be afraid to get extra help from a dermatologist/spa. I had some serious hyperpigmentation and my skincare products just weren’t cutting it. So I saw the derm and I’m now on tretinoin and also had a CO2 laser done.
    Mode isn’t always better. More retinol, more vitamin c…is not always key.
    Consistency is key!
    Your diet DEFINITELY affects your food. Sugar is horrible for your skin. Eating a diet high in fruits/vegetables and healthy fats will make you glow from the inside out. 😊
