They won't turn back the clock again.

@@andyb619 I just don't see average Iranians being too keen on restoring a symbolic monarchy that, whether you hold respect for the Shah or not, did not allow for democratic rule and which was genuinely puppeteered by foreign governments. When they achieve democracy they are going to be keen on strengthening that democracy, not restoring old institutions that represented an authoritarian past. The Shah did undertake a lot of admiral social reforms, but the reality is he did not let his people rule themselves. That's a poor symbol and message for a new democracy.
I should also say that Iran is not really at risk of Islamism. The revolution, in a lot of ways, was genuinely a fluke. Initially it was overwhelmingly a socialist revolt that was later highjacked by the clergy which took advantage of factionalism. But, honestly, the Iranians aren't themselves that fundamentalist (just their government), and, especially for the young generation, they have become exhausted under the Ayatollah's rule. I don't think a constitutional monarchy would stabilize against Islamism (especially because that political pull would be insignificant in a post-Ayatollah Iran), it would just be a rallying point against a new government.

1 He misunderstood that Shia by nature is religiously more conservative compared to the Sunnis.
2 He misunderstood the religious right in his country and allowed Khomeini to leave the country.
3 He gave Americans unprecedented freedom in his own country. Iranian Police were not allowed to charge or arrest an American National.
4 Iranian Economic Growth and Urban Middle Class were Westernized, but the Rural Masses were not brought within the mainstream. This radicalized the rural classes, which later fell prey to the revolution.
5 Associating himself with Western Values and ignoring local customs and Iranian Values. This brought the Shah and family world fame, but at what price? Iranians became deeply suspicious of the Shah after the coronation ceremony and big party that shook his country’s finances.
6 Egoistic and paranoid! Shah had a strong ego, and he was also paranoid.
7 Shah's Secret Service, the SAVAK did a lot of damage to the monarchy in Iran. Even shopkeepers were working for the secret police and the intelligence in Tehran, and nobody was given a second chance to prove their innocence once caught defaming the royal family.
8 Excessive reliance on the Americans! Uncle Sam was the father, son and the Holy Spirit of the Iranian State. Shah’s support to the USA during the Cold War not only made the religious right go bonkers but also infuriated the USSR. Hence, Shah lost the support of both the hard-wing rightists and leftists over time.
9 Investing in luxurious properties overseas and buying foreign assets. This didn't go down well with the people. The Iranian Revolutionary government tried to get money back from his UBS bank accounts but failed. It was believed that after the Shah left Iran, he took billions away with him, Only in his one Swiss Bank Account, there was rumored to be around USD 4-5 Bio dollars. He also had lavish properties in Switzerland, where he invited world leaders for a meeting. All this opulence damaged the Shah in the eyes of those who were backward and poor.
10 Not allowing a constitutional democracy to take root! He never allowed democracy to take root in Iran. Shah was all in one figure. This didn't help as he was not able to transfer blame like most Monarchs may do when the going gets tough.
11 If I may add one more is that he gave women bikinis but never degrees. Rural women or men never learnt or even given the chance to study. Literacy rate in Iran for women today is 98% while then it was less than 45%. Today 70% 0f Iran's science and engineering students are women. While the Shah spent millions to entertain world powers the rural poor people were starving and suffering

For many years, this old American has had the highest regard for Iran's great history and culture. Along with the ancient Greeks, the ancient Persians had the most profound influence on western civilization. Sadly, too many westerners are fed false narratives to promote their governments' ambitions. In closing, I'd like to recommend the excellent book by the late Paul Kriwaczek entitled In Search of Zarathustra. Far from being a dull academic work, it is a marvelous narrative of the author's travels, experiences, and research. Plus, it draws us all together as one humanity. Thank you for presenting this document of a most marvelous celebration of Iran's history.

They were not Turks but turkish speaking Iranian empires. you will not find any records from Safavid and afsharids kings calling themselves the turk or turkish. they all referred themselves to Shah of Iran. Azeris are Iranic peoples.
