London's Olympic Park still remains in continuous use, including even its Olympic Village. It is possible for the Olympics to leave a lasting legacy for the public with proper future-proof planning
Not necessarily. Sydney's 2000 Olympics created a stadium still used today, the Olympic village was successfully sold as housing as planned afterwards, etc.

@@wildthornberries8746 So many to list them all, but here are some examples. First, the cost of the party was $17 million to $22 million, not $635 million. Second, the video portrayed the Shah as a party maniac that just spends money frivolously. They failed to mention that the cost of the party was originally 4 time higher, and it was the Shah, who personally cut down on the scale of the party. Third, was the video mislead the viewer about the intention of the party. The party was not to fulfil Western Leaders (both sides of the Iron Curtain, and Non-Aligned Nations also attended), but to bring Iran to the world stage and boost tourism, similar to how the Gulf States, are currently doing (like hosting the World Cup). The Shah realized the the 70s, what the other Gulf States only realized in the 90s, that the oil revenue will run out, and that Iran needed to diversify into other industries (such as tourism) to survive. The Shah was way ahead of his time, too bad the people didn't see it, and was deceived by a con man (Khomeini).

I mean they just recently only broke the halfway mark of their former GDP per capita... And that's with the help of all the extra women now in the workforce... But then you're neglecting the absolutely massive increase in demand, (and therefore price) for crude in a country which supplies double what it consumes. ...that's 3x the price at little change in drilling costs (in Iran's case), for an export that makes up almost 1/3 of their economy, due purely to *_outside_* factors ...that's like if 3 Trillion dollars per year randomly started growing on trees in the USA, but despite that, and despite everyone's wife getting a job for the first time ever, the income of the nation was somehow only half as much as before. ...but then I told you everything is much better there now. Now I could understand some people (in the city, at least), being more unhappy back then despite having (basically quadruple the [expendable] income), simply due to the cultural shocks that went on in the 50s to early 60s..( I've experienced that myself..). But even if that was the case, and even if it didn't resolve on its own in time and strict adheerence to Shia faith was the only way, people can do that on their own without a national mandate.. I'm not saying EVERYONE wants this, but "long live the king", "Reza Shah, rest in peace" and the likes of these have been some of the loudest voices chanted in the streets of Iran. Plus, I think it would be foolish to mention this "party" (which was the celebration of 25th anniversary of a nation, and attracted lots of tourists, put Iran in the minds of foreign people as a civilized country) as the reason the monarchy "fell", and not mention the Oil Crisis on the 70s (particularly 73/4) in which the West wanted low price oil, and simultaneously wanted to sell ITS products with "normal" prices. the Shah stood against this, and then we have the Conference of Guadeloupe, and some times later, the Shah falls. let's not forget that according to recently declassified documents of the US, Jimmy Carter was in touch with the damned Khomeini, and supported his cause, sth that the next president, Ronald Reagan called "a betrayal of a key alley". so please, I urge all of you, to stop with ur "assumptions" and ur "occident-centric history", and go talk to an actual Iranian who lives in Iran, and see what they have to say.

You're applying the sensibilities of a ruler to a puppet who was in power precisely because of the same florigen powers who he was buying supplies from. The French and the British where instrumental to giving power to the shah because the previous prime minster (a much loved hero to his people) decided to nationalise the oil companies that belonged to these powers which left them very, very angry. So in true imperial fashion, they ousted the prime minster and put in place a western educated skirt chaser who would be there lap dog as long as they gave him support. Please take a look. , as an Iranian interested in history, I have to correct the article 1. First, the money allocated for this celebration came specifically from the oil crisis of 1973, although it should be noted that it was compensated later. 2. Second, inflation in the 1960s and early 1970s in Iran was 0%, and economic development was 15% (a growth rate comparable to South Korea). The assumption that people faced economic problems is completely invalid and illogical. Even having a conversation with an older Iranian or searching online would clarify this. 3. Third, public protests peaked between 1977 and 1979, and before that, a figure named Khomeini was not widely recognized. The images of public discontent are related to that time.

@Excalibur you have to see the mind of the emperor, he was a narcissistic. He wanted to show his status at the top, as a rich, important and better living. He wanted to be famous. He thought the French food was the best because it was expensive and considered one of the best of the world by some publicity. So he wanted the to of the French food, and even better than most of the French's ever eat. He had in mind that the Western countries where better, and some envy. He prefer to give to Charity instead of helping directly with his job as a leader, to be recognized had a good person.
Excalibur he did not abandon everything, he was still a religious person. He had personal flaws, but he wasn't westernized in all senses. You could see from his interviews that speak English with Persian accent on purpose. He is not ashamed of his heritage. He spoke openly about his beliefs in English interviews, not Farsi. He even mentioned that he was saved by Imam Zaman (AS) from drowning. Keep in mind he didn't say this publicly in front Iranians, he said in an English interview. Every person has flaws, you don't know how hard it is to govern a country unless you are in that position. With great power comes great responsibility. If you are sheep in power, the wolf will eat you up using every tools he has under his hand. We've seen how the wolf ate him when he didn't want to kill people for power.
Excalibur I understand what you mean by the mindset of our people. I never said somebody needs to be religious to be a nationalist, but I mentioned his religious beliefs to show that he wasn't as westernized as some claim him to be, because one of the usual characteristics of those fascinated by the western culture or in other words westernized people is to hide their religious beliefs or downright deny them. Shia Islam and overall Islam was the religion of the majority of people and it was connected to the culture to a great extent ( a lot what Iranians used to do and do and the way they talk came from those beliefs, that's what constitutes to their culture, their way of life). I also disagree with what you have said about Islam. Just because one religion spread from a specific piece of land, it doesn't mean the religion is exclusive to that area, specially when in Islamic theology it mentions that Islam is not just for a specific race like Arabs. In some sources, the religious figures scold Arabic tribes because of their betrayals and praises people who are pious even though they don't know Arabic. In our belief, just like Christianity and Judaism, Zoroastrians were led by a prophet, but the original message got distorted over time for the same reason Christianity and Judaism changed in our belief, that's just Shia belief, I'm not saying this for you to agree, I'm saying this to show you that in Shia belief Zoroastrianism isn't something completely disconnected to other religions and exclusive to Persia. Also, it is highly unlikely that all Zoroastrianism beliefs originally came from Iran. Zaratustra was a prophet in our belief, that's why you see the Zoroastrians were allowed to practice their religion, but they were taxed just like Jews and Christians (this can't be said about Hinduism and Buddhism). We don't think Zoroastrianism was the original religion of all Persians, it was at one point the religion of Persians though and not in its current form definitely. Also the whole point of religion is not satisfy fanatical nationalist aspirations, in my opinion religion is a set of beliefs that guide people both in this world and afterlife. It should be logical and supported by logic, otherwise it's false, so if there is something that people used to believe and arguments were made on why they are false, and there was no counter argument, then you can't force people to follow that religion just because it's their so-called original belief. About the revolution, these religious fanatics beliefs root from Muslim brotherhood, and have no basis in Shia belief since Shias don't consider any of the governments legitimate before the dawn of the last Imam (AS). They failed to mention that the cost of the party was originally 4 time higher, and it was the Shah, who personally cut down on the scale of the party. The party was not to fulfil Western Leaders (both sides of the Iron Curtain, and Non-Aligned Nations also attended), but to bring Iran to the world stage and boost tourism, similar to how the Gulf States, are currently doing (like hosting the World Cup). With this documentary, I understand why the Iranians at that time wanted to overthrow the Shah.
Now, Iranian are pissed of their decision. Crying over our current Islamic regime. Which spends much MUUUUCH greater money on supporting terrorism and war. Spreading terror and "WORD OF DEATH" all around the middle east. Causing chaos and mismanagement in Iran. Before the revolution, Iran was a safe, calm country Best place for tourism and peaceful gathering of nationalities. yes, indeed, Iran wasn't fully developed, But, It was slowly moving ahead, like other countries.
Now, Iranian people don't have any respect around the world, they think of us as wild terrorist people.
at embassies, airports and other places overseas, they treat us like some inferior people.
It's what the revolution brought, chaos and word of death.
Shah, even with his disqualified manners, had a peaceful vision.
in an alternate reality, we could maybe meet in a bar on the islands of Iran.
Having a genuine discussion with freedom and peace of mind.
Best,
@Hernando Malinche You guys are both clearly making so many assumptions... But man, are you sure the collapse of their economy wasn't responsible for both more women working and fewer births?
... I mean they just recently only broke the halfway mark of their former GDP per capita... And that's with the help of all the extra women now in the workforce...
But then you're neglecting the absolutely massive increase in demand, (and therefore price) for crude in a country which supplies double what it consumes.
...that's 3x the price at little change in drilling costs (in Iran's case), for an export that makes up almost 1/3 of their economy, due purely to *_outside_* factors
...that's like if 3 Trillion dollars per year randomly started growing on trees in the USA, but despite that, and despite everyone's wife getting a job for the first time ever, the income of the nation was somehow only half as much as before.
...but then I told you everything is much better there now.
The real issue is everyone outside the cities: they are hard up today.
@@ChadDidNothingWrong You missed the part about sanctions. Also, data shows that there is a negative correlation between wealth and population growth. Better economy => less kids.
@Bert Actual Iranian here, born and raised in Iran in a middle-class family. Name one country that respects Iran that is not a terrorist Islamist, or a Commie?
and to the rest of you lot, actual Iranians today (the majority of which is under 35/40 years old), regret the revolution and abolition of the monarchy, and many are calling for the return to the CONSTITUTIONAL monarchy, as seen in the protests of the last 2 years.

The party was a big advertisement for the country to attract tourists from all over the world. The Queen Farah recalls that previous to the party people of the world thought that Iran was just a big desert with no history, no contribution to the history and so forth.

*OH MY GOD!!!* He @~?£ing did, the Shah literally revitalised his entire country.
If he wanted to show off Iran's strengths he should've sourced locally as much as possible. Using foreign labour and importing foreign eggs obviously wouldn't have sat well with the people whose money was being used. What a mad man.
Essentially. Most of that money went to foreign companies and foreigners instead of Iranians. All because the Shah had "taste".
He jus said that to cover his shit. It's not true infact. He jus wanted to be the king of kings.
Say what you will about the current regime in Iran with all its terrorist and expansionist policies but at least they're loyal to there people. Western democracies will forever place there own interests way before human rights and so called international laws.
Daha Solomon loyal to their people is extremely false, social oppression has never been this bad. They will quite literary kill any amount of people to remain in power. The shah did not try to cling on power when the riots got bad. Funny thing is, french bbc was the first channel to introduce Khomeini, think about that for a reason.

Please take a look. , as an Iranian interested in history, I have to correct the article

The part that astounds me is that Iranian food wasn't served. There's an Iranian restaurant about 30 minutes from me that tastes absolutely amazing.
They wanted French food.
These revolutionary thoughts were introduced into the religion by Khomeini (his teacher was a brotherhood) and the Marxists, those thoughts were popular during those days. So, I don't think it's Shias fault at all. Even scholars such as Shariatmadari and Borujerdi and Khoei and opposed him, but nobody listened.
This whole party sounded so 'keeping up with the Jones'', as if he was embarrassed by what Iran could offer so he imported everything trendy instead. Iran/Persia are famous for many things and their food is incredible, why not show it off?
