Hi Xtatic. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. If you can track down a fully working Auto S2 you really can't go wrong. They are great cameras. Cheers, Howard
I have the II, IIA and IIIA. The IIA is my favourite because of the better shutter combined with the small size than the IIIA. The Auto S2 looks like an attractive camera that I will try and fing as well as the Auto S1.6. Thank you for your in-depth descriptions of these old Konicas.
Hi. Nice collection you have there. The Auto S2 is a great camera and if you can get one with the meter working properly you will not be disappointed. I don't have the 1.6 but I'm sure it's excellent as well. Good luck. Cheers, Howard
Nice video Howard, I've just bought a Auto S2 from a charity shop online which I'm.hoping has at least been checked to see it releases. Your videos are superb.
Hi soldierloz. Thanks for the nice comment. The Konica Auto S2 is a great camera, the Konica Hexanon lenses were exceptional. Hopefully everything works as it should, but it is a fully mechanical camera so even if the metering is dead the camera should be operational. Have fun, Howard
@ Thank you indeed Howard. Please … call me Laurie, very honoured to make your acquaintance Sir. Yes once the camera arrives I’ll let you know how it pans out. If the meter works that would be amazing! Laurie
Howard, an update for you my friend. 🙏🏻 I received the S2 through the post this morning and unpacked it. Initially when I first inspected it, it looked as if it had just come out of its box! So I had a play with it and then found that it wouldn’t cock or fire so I thought I had bought a “duffer”. Then I noticed that the timer was half way across so I helped it along a bit and it fired. After that all was good. The lever must have moved across a bit in the post. Next I found the interior of the range finder windows to be a little dusty so in I went and cleaned those up. Nice now. This left me with the light meter (yes I could have checked that first but I would have used with an external meter anyhow so no dramas). I popped in PX125a, pressed the test button and the meter sprung in to life! Unbelievable! Finally, I wanted some new light seals for it so I popped down to my local camera shop and showed it to my friend in there. He said it was mint and hadn’t seen one this nice in over 20 years! It’s now a battle between the S2 and my Minolta 7s as to who gets a film first! Have to say the 7S well worth a look. I like the 9 too but the 7S gives back a little bit more control. Anyhow Howard, I thought you’d like some feedback and it’s thanks to you that I was able to learn all about the S2 so thank you! Sending regards from 🇬🇧 Laurie
I have one and it's in excellent shape ... the lens is a little wobbly a little bit .. it's built like a tank ... I've never taken any pictures with it but what I've read is the lenses awesome .. the guy I worked with traded me for that camera and a case knife .. and he told me that there was a camera guy that took it apart and cleaned it ... I'll probably never take any pictures with his camera because I have a Nikon F4 , and a Pentax MX , a Minolta XD ... this camera came out the year I was born 1965 ... the Konica Auto S2 the one I have is like new
Hi. I think you should at least put a roll of film through the Auto S2, assuming it works as well as it looks. It was one of the great rangefinder cameras, and since the rest appear to be SLRs it would be a new experience. Cheers, Howard
My grandfather is giving me his old auto S2 and I plan on taking it up on a trip to North Carolina. I've got a roll of Fujifilm speed 400 I am going to use.
Hi James. Assuming that this camera is working as it should, I'm sure you'll be very happy with it. They are right up there with the best of the Japanese rangefinder cameras. Cheers, Howard
I have a Konica C35 FD, which is the Japanese version of the Auto S3. Nice, compact camera about the right size for a day out street shooting. My weighty Yashica Electro GL is nice too, but just a bit cumbersome for long periods!
Hi Yat. That's good to hear. I think that the camera might have been modified to handle 1.5v batteries earlier in its life as quite a few were but either way it's great that it's working well for you. These really are very nice cameras. Cheers, Howard 📷
@@thumperstrauss4431 Hi Thumper. Yes that is the battery but they are quite expensive. There was another comment here where they said that a cheap 1.5v 625 battery worked for them for both colour and B&W films Cheers, Howard 📷
Thanks for the video Howard! I recently purchased a Auto S with the idea of harvesting the lens to convert it into a M42 mount to use on my mirrorless camera. But after getting the camera and seeing how good of shape its in and how attractive the camera is, I just don't have the heart to rip it apart and destroy the camera for just the lens. You said in your review of the Auto S that yours had a sticky shutter and blades. Was it hard to get access to the backside of the lens to repair those issues? I've taken apart another old rangefinder to harvest it's lens and its pretty much a wild mess back there. Looking more like a clock or watch with all the levers and springs. Any advice to gain access to the shutter and blades would me helpful. Thanks again for a great review!
Hi ChasWG. It was many years ago that I pulled it apart. I remember that I removed the lens board after removing the leatherette. It was a big job. You could try dripping some lighter fluid in to the self timer mechanism and some of the other gaps, but don't overdo it. Cheers, Howard 📷
Hi Mary. These are two very different cameras. The C35 series are battery dependent, compact, point and shoot, automatic cameras. The AutoS/ S2 were the last full size flagship cameras. Fully mechanical and not battery dependent. Much heavier and more serious cameras. All are very good depending on what you want. Cheers, Howard 📷
I also just bought an broken S2 with 15$, after CLA it came back like new but still remain some issues, speed runs about 1 stop slower, some fungus and stains on the coating, auto exposure not working, I have shooted 1 roll and eagerly waiting for the results
Hello, Howard! I caught that, but I thought it was a little brief (understandable as it's not the topic of the video). I should probably rephrase my question and ask if you could elaborate on it (perhaps in another stellar video).. Excellent video as always👌
