Why Zellige Tiles Are So Expensive | So Expensive

Zellige tiles are one of Morocco's most valued and recognizable art forms. But this type of tile isn't cheap, especially compared to other popular machine-made tiles. A square foot of Zellige tiles can cost $50. Compare that to ceramic subway tiles, which might only cost $0.15 per square foot. The craft of making Zellige tiles is centuries old, but it may be dying as young artisans lose interest in the trade. So why are Zellige tiles so expensive? And how is Morocco preserving this valuable art?

There is nothing called Moroccan heritage ( it’s called Islamic Art 😂😂😂😂 Western schmucks .
One of the great things I saw in Morocco, the country has many amazing things like the Couscous the Tajine and the carpets, Argan.. it's so underrated

@@mimiMiriam-dv8wd😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 you clown
@@mimiMiriam-dv8wdthe only clever one is you the others are all stupid.
@@mimiMiriam-dv8wdI challenge you to come up with evidence that the tiles are Algerian. We want a place where they are made in cargholia, or the name of a person who makes them. O motorists, your country is 62 years old. There is no comparison with the Moroccan Empire.
The porcelain and ceramic industry began in Morocco, especially in the city of Fez, in the year 789 AD, that is, twelve centuries ago, and it is still manufactured to this day. It is an ancient industry.
Hhhhh no zelij is in morocco befor islam
The Moroccan heritage 🇲🇦🇲🇦
The funny thing is that some newly created countries arround decided to have some sort of heritage and started nicking the Morrocan one which has been built up over centuries and centuries to bring up to where it is now! To my opinion Morocco officials in charge were slow to react, how ever thanks a lot for your video sir.
Don’t mind those people. Ignorance and stupidity blinded them and made them try to jump on a heritage that’s known worldwide that’s a Moroccan heritage. Gold will always shine.

The clay from which these tiles are made is only found in the areas surrounding the city of Fez. Therefore, this industry only exists in this city, from which the name of the Fasian court was taken.
Great heritage of Morocco 🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦
Morocco 🇲🇦 👏
Thank you Business Insider for shedding light on this art form.
Working with clay really has given me a place where I can engage in some healthy introspection, sort of all you can really do when you're in the studio alone coning clay and making bowls or plates or whatever. I really hope more young people are able to find their way into it because its a beautiful medium and the world would be poorer with out Zellige.
In Morocco we make Zellije and build palaces with whereas some others print it on their football national team cloths.
yeah we know.. karghulian people!
Algerian zellij. They are just exploiting people's ignorance. With many traditions from Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, they promote it. for them. It is only tourism

Morocco has to protect this valuable heritage before it's too late
it old medieval cities, Syria, Palestinian and Lebanon most of "Damascene house" with beautiful ornament, tiles and arch destroyed, included fort, castle, palace, traditional building, market, caravanserai, today Gaza, almost all heritage site and old medieval building mosque, church etc destroyed. Mororccan-Andalus and Levant-Syria have similar roof architecture because of Umayyad. Iraq-Iran have influences of Abbasid. Egypt=Fatmid.
@@safuwanfauzi5014 can you give me an example of the similar roof architecture?
@@anissbenthami They can't!
@@safuwanfauzi5014 the ummayad didn't last long in north africa and especially in morrocoo, to have an influence of any kind, their invasion was resisted for more than 60 years and after they took the region they lasted for less than 30 years in which they were hated by the population cause they were violent racist colonizer thiefs, and their only goal was looting the locals, until the revolution against them started in the year 740 and they were kicked out from current day morroco for good, after they were defeated by morrocan revolts in the battle of bakdoura and the battle of al achraf. Architecture wise, you can see the real oamayad architecture in the omera palas in curent day Jordan, and you ll realize that it has nothing to do with the glorious handcrafts and architecture we have in morroco.

A perfect example of how difficult trades used to be in the past and why the tradesmen often died relatively young or destroyed their bodies in the process.

Fes heritage ( Morocco)
The Zelij technique goes back to 10-11th century. It started in east of Algeria with hamadid dynasty, a branch of zirid dynasty. The zelij travelled to andalousia (present south of Spain), then back to Algeria, but in Tlemcen this time, and finally reached Fez which managed to keep this tradition vibrant
Loooool. You liar. No evidence. No shops, no artisan, no craftmanship in kargholia. You mostly have big mouths, specialists of stealing and appropriation of the culture and the heritage of you neighbours. Shame on you.

I challenge everyone who says that Moroccan tiles are not Moroccan to bring us a workshop that makes them in the country or the name of a craftsman to learn that they are Moroccan heritage and you only find them in Morocco, such as the caftan, argan oil, tagine, and couscous. The origin is Moroccan, and the rest is imitation.

in this field you have to begin as child, now law forbid to engage children at work, this is the big threat to this industry, cause when a child begin to reach the teenage or above he resist to the orders and can't accept instructions and begin to be more rebel and this is why the majority fail to continue in this path. patience and dedication are keys here

hahaha the moroccan wanna be clowns AKA algerians claimed this to be part of their heritage XD they dont even know what the symbols mean and how this whole thing is made . to those i say , the only way for you to be moroccans is to pledge alegience to our king or wait for us to annex you as we did during the almohad and almoravid dynasties .
You have no history, the king of morocco used to rule all of North Africa, once the king left u were left without identity and mixed with the French, don’t even try or I’ll remind you your dark history .
