so so worth it, if one can afford it and has the patience to install it. An affordable option, though you won't get the unevenness authentic Zellige offers, is Amagansett tile, by Ivy Hill, offered at home depot. It's limited colors, but it has that opalescence and uneven tile face to it. I used it in my bathroom and it's stunning. The other thing is, to give that Zellige look, it to stack the tile like you did, not where one tile is laid over the seam below the two tile below(like you typically lay brick). I love Zellige and it does come in some incredible colors. It's timeless elegance.
I’ll have to check out the Amangansett tile. I think you’re describing 50% overlay pattern right? I think that would def help create some unevenness and texture!
We're in the process of kitchen reno now and we decided to go with Zillege 4x4, or at least we want to. But seeing this finished product, it's gorgeous and all but can't imagine cleaning it will be fun. Maybe easier to clean in the bathroom where you can water jet it, but in the kitchen grease, hmmm. Maybe not.
We were actually just talking about the same thing. We were considering it as a backsplash in the kitchen but decided otherwise due to the challenges of cleaning grease off it. It’s possible just challenging for sure.
Your bathroom turned out great! How do you find the day to day maintenance for zellige? Does the unevenness make cleaning difficult? I’m worried about water settling in the uneven spaces causing mould growth. But it looks amazing!
Please tell me this is your second or third channel; I don't think I've ever come across a YTr with such high content production quality and yet fewer than 500 subs!
Since zellige is natural and porous it absorbs water. If you don’t soak. It’ll absorb water out of the thinset causing it to be too dry once placed on the wall and it won’t be as strong of a bond.
I had a question! How was cutting the tiles on the finishing edge of the shower? Was it difficult to do / does the tile break easily? Thanks!! Love the way it turned out ! I should be installing mine in the next month 😊
It wasn't too bad at all actually. Occasionally the the edges chipped and we had to redo but overall it came out pretty cleanly most of the time. My tile saw is the table push type. That might have helped some.
@@funtimesindeed if you’re okay with the look you may want to consider using grout lines which will help with the unevenness. It will just take more time. You can find tiles with similar thicknesses and also push more or less into the thinset to get it even. The look is amazing on the floor!
Hey! I've tried calling the tile manufacturer but they don't have any answers for me. Maybe you can help: I'm installing zellige tile around a fireplace hearth. Small square footage. low traffic. The subfloor is concrete so I have to use a Ditra membrane. I'm assuming this is ok with such a thick tile? My second question is: how thick of a mortar bed is appropriate for these thick tiles? Its amazing how little info is out there and I feel like this is more like masonry then tile. TIA!
@@funtimesindeed Hey there is definitely not a lot of info out there and a lot of tilers won’t even install zellige. I’m totally down to help! So if you have concrete subfloor you actually don’t need the ditra. Since concrete doesn’t flex like wood subfloor it can be installed directly onto the concrete. Using ditra is fine too though. Thick tile shouldn’t matter on the ditra or concrete subfloor. Ditra just requires tile larger then 2x2 I believe. We used a 1/4”x1/4” square notch trowel. We back buttered as well. I think any smaller may not get coverage. And larger not needed.
Zellige isn't overrated but I think that by using one color you're ultimately limiting yourself in what you can do and are missing why zellige is so highly prized. I'm not saying that you need to make an intricate mosaic for you shower, but I think the monochromatic design trend that is seen a lot in western countries, particularly America, is overrated to the point of being pretentious.
