I Lost All My Motivation While Remodeling This Bathroom
It’s been over 2 years since I started to remodel this bathroom. It’s been a massive renovation where we tore the bathroom down to the stud. With working full time this has been a slow process but there was a long period where I stopped working on the bathroom dude to a loss of motivation. This is a story about my struggle with motivation.

How to install shower valve and pex water lines
Great handy work and video work!
😍
When you attached the shower wand to the wall…it did not scratch your tile ?
@@tonycopelyn8730 you mean the piece that covers the hole.
@@Drewdoode is there something that fits on the backside of the wand holder that protects the tile from being damaged by metal wand holder as you screw it onto the water inlet line?
that lazer level saved your ahh tho
@@disturbedmushroom_Live at least there’s that!
yeah, no
Am doing those tile but square ones if tile is your trade takes time get use to all the imperfections
@@gustavouribe518 not much time.
I had an air vent in the same bay as my plumbing so I couldn't use a 2x4 either. I used a 1x6 which allowed me to slip it behind the ABS and fastened another small 1x6 on top of the 1x6 to get my fixture to the correct depth.
@@xuser9980 glad you were able to make it work. We wanted to do it in another bathroom but couldn’t because the abs was occupying the whole space.
This was brilliant! I want to make a similar thing in our house and finally came across the exact video I was looking for. Thank youu. What a great job you’ve done 🙌

Cleaning? How expensive?
We clean ourselves so it’s relatively cheap. Just the price of scrubbing bubbles bathroom cleaner. Not too difficult to clean either.
Love you attention to detail. Noticed that you did not run your pipes through shutoff valves and wonder why? Asking because I’m installing a similar in-wall mounted faucet and wonder if I should include shutoff valves
@@ub03764 I see them the same as shower or tub valves. Shut off valves could be convenient for a leak but either way the wall has to be opened to fix a leak.
Does the drawer have to be recessed on the bottom/ you're drawer has an overhang underneath?
@@frankfranco5152 it actually has bump stops that push it out more. It needs to protrude past the front edge of the box in order to have space to push it so it opens. The drawer slide is recessed a bit but then the slide is adjusted forward so the drawer sits out some.
I agree glue down is a better method, especially in older properties where there is constant movement. I’m planning to glue down chevron engineered wood on top of cork underlay, but my subfloor are not super even Victorian floor boards. Do I put a layer of plywood under cork? Or do I put cork and then ply with wood on top?! It’s my first ever floor and I am so nervous. Help!!!
@@deedots2878 Hello! Is the floor slanting in one direction or are there dips in the floor?
@@Drewdoode dips in the floor…and it’s slated towards the middle. Not massive perhaps a cm or so
@@deedots2878 you can buy floor patch and spread it on the dipped areas. You spread it on like thinset. The other option is putting self leveler but it’s a large job. I’ve not done that before. I’ve used the patch and it worked good.
@@Drewdoode Thank you for your advice! We removed some hardboard and the floor patch they had use some years ago was all cracked and contributing to the noise. I dug deeper and was advised to purchase a special wood floor grade ply and fix it well to subfloor, that should fix levelling issues. I am just wondering whether to place the cork between subfloor and ply or between ply and chevron top layer? I will be glueing down. But I’m guess I can just experiment once my materials arrive and see what makes better sense. To be fair, half the pro’s I have come across were playing the guessing game too

Is it matte finish? I am looking for something matte, ive used venetian before and they are very shiny. Also, is it porous? Venetian would look wet with the moisture, but it dries easily. We just bought another house and Im seriously looking at using Portola. Im glad I found your video!
@@Overeasy159 thanks so much for the comment. It’s matte. It would have a sheen if we used the protective coating but since the bathroom is not closed off and large I’m not too worried about moisture and opted to not use the coating. We also didn’t want to make it shiny haha.
@@Drewdoode thank you so much for your response! And your bathroom is perfection, beautiful.. great job!
@@Overeasy159 thanks so much!
Sheshh best editing out there , I thought I was watching a movie
Thanks so much!!!
Why do you have to soak it? Is that with only zellige? Or any tiles?
Since zellige is natural and porous it absorbs water. If you don’t soak. It’ll absorb water out of the thinset causing it to be too dry once placed on the wall and it won’t be as strong of a bond.
Hey nice work. I like the edits on the video. You have a great eye for lighting and staging. As for the tile work. I am a tile contractor and I think you did a great job. Cle Zellige tiles are tricky and you did well. I have a few videos on here also of this kind of install and your work is comparable in the finished product. Not perfect but with this tile, perfect is just not a real thing.
Thanks so much for the feedback. I’m going to check out your videos so I can learn more.
How has maintenance been? Easy to clean?
Not too bad. I want to try and use an electric scrubber brush on it. Maybe I should make a video on it.
We’d love that!
It looks soooooooooooooo good!! I did my kitchen in the same. Had a panic attack in the beginning because it looks rough in the start. But be brave, cause the end product is so worth it. Nice job.
Sooooo worth it. I kept thinking I was doing it wrong.
I think your videos are very well done and your install work looks top notch. We have Brizo fixtures as well but I have been unable to find the temperature adjustments on the tub filler. Are you familiar with the adjustment procedure? Thanks!
I didn’t know there was a temp adjustment other than positioning the rotating handles? I thought it was similar to faucets? Is yours too hot or too cold?
It won’t go above 100. Everywhere else is 120. Most have a mixing valve but I can’t find one.
@@12Cainepolo do you think maybe the handle is positioned too far back and not opening the hot water line enough?
I will test and report back. Thanks!

How do you go about planning your projects from top to bottom
We usually create a mood board of what finishes we want then take measurements and then demo. I might have to make a video on this process!!
@@Drewdoode that would be a great video , coming from someone who wants to renovate myself but don’t know how to start, it’s daunting, not knowing how to tackle a project for the first time and have it come out professional like you have created
@@iph2 I def will plan to make a video like this. Thanks for the idea!!
Crazy how small changes make big impacts
I love the art of photo and video.
My hands were dry as shit from yesterday 😂
Haha the thinset dries them out lol
What’s your opinion on multiple bathrooms. Keeping the style consistent on all 3 or have each entirely different
Initially I wanted all the bathrooms to have the same finishes products but I think that’s more often done in quick flip home renovations. I think style can be consistent but each bathroom should have its own identity.
Beautiful job filming this! I don't think Zellige tile will ever not be a showstopper.
Thanks so much! So happy with the outcome. Have you used zellige?
@@Drewdoode We're getting ready to put it in our kitchen (backsplash/wall) this week, first time with this type of tile. I live near LA and bought from Zia, the 4 inch squares. I accidentally found your great video yesterday!
Also, I don't think I mentioned, but your shower turned out gorgeous
@@audriesharpe5729 Thanks so much! And the square zellige looks amazing. Your kitchen we’ll be awesome with zellige backsplash.
Wow
Dude this is clean !!!!!, quick question did you also place like plastic under ? I notice companies use plastic under engineered wood flooring
Plastic is for a moisture barrier on concrete subfloor when floating floors. Since we utilized the glue down method on concrete subfloors we used cork underlayment. The cork underlayment also acts as a moisture barrier.
@@Drewdoode how much did it end up costing for the 1700 sqft in materials total, you’re actually the first Iv seen use the cork underpayment and glue , actually seems solid and longer lasting
@@iph2 So we paid about $0.80 a square foot for the underlayment. $150 for adhesive to glue cork to the subfloor and then $1000 for adhesive to glue hardwood to cork. This process is worth it if in the budget. The floor is so solid and it’s quiet and has better temp retention. We actually learned how to do it on RUclips from someone named @Mrdoityourself
@@Drewdoodeappreciate the advice, solid work
@@iph2 let me know if you have any other questions!
What do you do for your main job, are you self taught ? I really wanna start Reno by myself but feels daunting
I’m a physical therapist! I’m all self taught. There’s a lot to learn but I learned it all online. It’s doable and a lot of it builds on each itself. Let me know if you have any questions.
what do you cut the valve and threaded brizo valve with? i know its 7/8 and then the stub out 1 1/2 inches. just dont want to mess the threads up
Are you talking about the hole in the wall where the fixtures passed through?
Zellige isn't overrated but I think that by using one color you're ultimately limiting yourself in what you can do and are missing why zellige is so highly prized. I'm not saying that you need to make an intricate mosaic for you shower, but I think the monochromatic design trend that is seen a lot in western countries, particularly America, is overrated to the point of being pretentious.
I see the art in having a mosaic style zellige for sure. Does not fit our style but I can appreciate the art.
You should have more subscribers!! Great content!
Thanks so much!
We're in the process of kitchen reno now and we decided to go with Zillege 4x4, or at least we want to. But seeing this finished product, it's gorgeous and all but can't imagine cleaning it will be fun. Maybe easier to clean in the bathroom where you can water jet it, but in the kitchen grease, hmmm. Maybe not.
We were actually just talking about the same thing. We were considering it as a backsplash in the kitchen but decided otherwise due to the challenges of cleaning grease off it. It’s possible just challenging for sure.
