I'd suggest to react to the criminally underrecognized Travis Orbin. This guy basically smokes anyone in terms of complexity, technicality and overall musicality.
When AAL came to Japan, I happened to see him in a coffee shop. He was listening to music through headphones, so I went over to see what he was listening to and found out that what he was listening to was the sound of a metronome.
Matt Garstka has his own level! He usually starts a new album cycle playing the parts same as the album live once he becomes bored or has played it a couple of times he starts to challenge himself and play the songs with new patterns. Saw them twice live during the Madness of Many album and the second time he changed A LOT of things.
I love seeing someone willing to tell people to leave if they don't like the content. Not only the best drummer, but the most confident of RUclipsrs, too. You're a true champion.
as someone who is learning spanish, i love being able to watch with spanish captions and see the differences with syntax. especially in a real world use of specific vocabulary (drums/music) outside what i see in school or on an app. thanks for your amazing insight as always. much love groovefather.
I feel we are spoiled because most people who pick up English seriously as a second language focus on using words in their proper way and making sure to have a good variety of words to describe things that native English speakers don't use often because we have cut out a lot of filler stuff in our own conversations. Of course he's also a RUclipsr and probably has some sort of script on him or in his head.
You are freaking hilarious, entertaining, humble. And amazing when you play, and/or commentate. “You think you can do this. You can not”. Lmao. Love you man. The absolute best. Love you man
Old Matt Garstka looks like he'd play Magic the Gathering with you on a quiet saturday afternoon, current Matt Garstka looks like he'd full body suplex you if you looked at him the wrong way.
You are an ace of a communicator. Your drumming is second to your ability to translate the art/science of drumming. You could create a cooking channel and it would be an effortless subscribe for most of us. Love your passion.
The craziest thing about this is that I would consider this as one of Matt's more accessible songs and it's STILL this hard to pull off. God damn. You are both kings though. You should invite him on for a video! He's a really down to earth dude.
Thank you for introducing this amazing talent to those of us who didn’t know. Your videos are a joy to watch; I laugh, I shout “WHOA!” I shake my head in wonderment, and am ultimately inspired to sit down and practice to learn something new. You are a blessing to the drumming world, sir, bravissimo!
I love your break downs and reactions. The technical aspects from a musician of your caliber help make things seem at least attainable. I listen to a lot of animals as leaders. They are amazing!!
Matt is a beast. Watching him performing live and seeing how he stands out even with tosin abasin casting his shadow over everyone is a unique experience
@Dr. Worm True that. I just feel like people only mention Tosin or Matt and I feel like Javier deserves to be spoken about more. Big fan of his side project Mestis.
Hombre, realmente me gusta este video porque me encanta mucho esta canción, Matt es uno de mis bateristas favoritos de todos los tiempos y también me encanta sus videos. Tomar una clase contigo sobre algo que me inspira tanto fue increíble. ¡Gracias, maestro!
I am not a musician of any kind and was completely riveted to this video start to finish. You are great and thank you for 20 minutes of entertainment. Your breakdowns are fascinating and your playing is unbelievable to me. Thanks.
one of the things that impresses me the most about matt (besides his monstruous technique) is his kit. usually drummers that play prog use these bombastic and enourmous kits, with so many cymbals that you wouldn't know how to use, all these toms, double bass drum, and stuff like that. but matt's kit is just normal, not exaggerated, with everything you need to play complex stuff anyway.
I love that you get exclusive presentation of the isolated drum VIDEO! Keep breaking it down boss. I eat it up. Thisdude has been blowing my gaskets for years now and im so glad to see I'm not alone in my admiration. I love your commentary and reviews of the performance of other drummers - thank you for taking the time to share your understanding and knowledge to help other understand the magnificence you see and hear
Excellent. Love it how an awesome drummer like you Estepario appreciates other good drummers and giving credit where it's due. Lots of new rubbish musicians think the sun shines out of their arses whereas you stay humble and a mentor to drummers. Rock on and I'm so happy to have discovered uou this week. Grazia pera questo and greetings from South Africa 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽

This is an absolute unbelievable video. Not only does this highlight how amazing matt is but shows how brilliant you are too! Amazing music sense! You are incredible. Thank you for doing this! I loved it!
Last year I had the pleasure to watch Matt play that song live. It's definitely incredible, he's a very unique drummer. Thanks for this video, it was awesome!
Matt also did the drums (in one take) for Casimir Liberski's album Cosmic Liberty. Hardest minimalist music ever. Check out the track "Strident Laser Shard", and just wait for it. Be sure to have both a solid understanding of rhythm and to be absolutely not sober.
Just came across this EStep - and really cool to see that you've done a breakdown here of Garstka's recording this many years ago. It's interesting to me that the elements you seem to consider the most challenging are the fusion elements that are very Weckl / Caliuta inspired. The 16th 'e' accents on the ride and the displaced fusion breaks are almost right off of Weckl's Multiplicity. This is an important part of his repertoire and one of the things I love about his playing, and love playing, too.
Love the vids, and incredible to see him tracking. Wow! Ever see John Theodore when he was with The Mars Volta? Came to mind for best prog drum performances. Cheers mate.
This is a perfect example of pure talent throughout the entirety of the band, Animals As Leaders. Each of the artists in that band are undeniably, masters of their craft.
do your thing man, every single video i have seen on this channel has been awesome so far. one handed covers, drunk green day cover, awesome shorts, motivational content and reacts. you're my go to guy when watching drum vids. I only recently found out about Chris Turner from Oceans ate Alaska with the song "blood brothers" which i cant wrap my head around. maybe a bit too much for a reaction video, but def. worth a watch if you havent seen it already. have a nice day and thank you for the entertainment.
So glad to see Matt get his credit! Hes incredible. Absolute technical monster.hes just as good live too,got to see them in Seattle! My favorite is his drum playthrough of red miso and brain dance
So, your breakdown of this song is AMAZING! I'm so glad to see somebody like you "a lot like me, but better lol" give these little nuances the attention they deserve. Here's the thing, I'm sort of one of those old school guys you mention. I've been told I'm what you'd get if you put Danny Carey, Abe Cunningham "Deftones", and Mike Portnoy together. I add, that you'd also have to take about 70% of their ability away lol. But I heard Animals As Leaders, in the oddest place, YEARS ago. I heard them on the radio channels that were on Digital Cable. I have never been able to make much sense of what they do. I just listen, drool, and enjoy lol.
Not a drummer, but I really do appreciate polyrhythms and ostenatos, a huge influence in my guitar writing process is incorporating unorthodox rhythms. AAL does a great job of this.
That WAS a lot of fun! Thanks Estepario!! The thing about Garstka and AAL imho, there's not enough space. You're getting blasted with notes for 45 minutes, and it gives most listeners a headache. Stuff one of their tunes in the middle of others, and it's a hit, because they're monsters. I guess what I'm saying is that I prefer music that expresses emotion and or conveys a story more than the "wow look at me and how awesome I am at my instrument" music. And that lots of notes are great, but it needs contrast.
Reacciona a "Satellites" de Matt Halpern, o a alguna canción de Periphery. Me encantaría que desglosaras alguno de sus temas y poder aprender de ellos y de ti. Gracias por todo!
Quality content for sure ! At least some commentary videos with actual study and relevant comments! Thanks man, you put a lot of heart in your work, it really makes the difference! Inspirationnal at EVERY LEVEL! If I had to suggest the next video's topic I'd say one of Raymond Hearne from Haken, or obviously the great Gavin ! xxx
The one thing i have taken away from el estepario and all of his other videos is his total and absolute passion for his art! He is the true definition of a drummer. If he keeps up this love for the skins, i predict he will become one of the big legends.
I've been listening to metal for 30 years. I've been playing guitars and drums for 20 years. As an extreme death metal drummer, I thought we could play anything!!! HAHAHAHA. How cocky I was! I came across your videos. I thought that when I play fast 280BPM - I'm amazing!!! At the moment I don't play any instrument... Out of shame... I would say with my hand on my heart that YOU ARE NUMBER 1 ON THE ENTIRE PLANET!
Silence...the rest. Definitely the most powerful thing in music because of the anticipation and the absence grabs the attention. Would you consider commenting on something from Chris Turner's solo album "steezy"? Thanks man, you rule and congratulations on the completion of your band's world tour!
I'm no drummer, but I enjoyed that. Matt is the beast, so are You. BTW Matt made some vids of process of making of few songs from Parrhesia - mindblowing
Thank you for saying drummers compose which is why any group making music, every musician is composing and deserves all credit creating and writing. Everyone loves you ❤
I'd recommend checking out Chris Allison playing The Glass Bead Game for your next breakdown video. He's got a really smooth feel and his control over odd time signatures is inspiring.
I've seen Plini a few times live and Chris Allison is such a monster. Glass Bead Game blew me away the first time I heard it. Was going to see AAL live as well, but it was canceled due to Covid....then the rescheduled date was also canceled!
Matt Garstka aside (he's a f***ing monster), I want to thank you for this reaction/review. I love your reaction videos and this is one of the best! I love how you are technical in your comments but also underline musical aspects. You are really teaching us mortals something, so thank you! Last but not least, I like how humble you always are, despite being one of the few (very..) capable of playing certain songs. Massive respect for you and your work! 🙏
This is the best "reaction" video I've seen. An actual reaction, and not just a video of someone watching another video with drool coming out of their mouth. Thank you!
I 100% agree that he is on another level and one of the best if not the best active drummer today. I don't have enough drum knowledge to explain why he's the best but he has been on the top of my list since he joined AAL. great video
LMAOOO i love the way that this dude does react videos because, i do this when i watch movies LMAOOOO nobody wants to watch with me. i think they're just missing every fuckin thing that makes a movie special. i don't even know if we're watching the same movie, even though i'm sitting with them in the same room watching the same tv. blows my mind honestly. i appreciate the love and attention he gives here so we can learn loll 2:20 yess this dude is letting us know of the musicality of the cymbals. i love it. it's easy to think that drums are all just the same note because we're taught it's a rhythm instrument, but hoooooow WROONG. every single hit has its own tone and resonance and makes its own music. and the players that go back and forth with the tones also, they can make a drum come alive
Mike Mangini Or Riccardo Merlini for their speed with one hand just as you are also a candidate for excellent one handed playing Mike’s coolest thing in my opinion is playing cymbals upside down (other than his incredible composing ability as a drummer)
Great analysis of my favourite drummer, by another incredible drummer. The man who can play any song one handed, is still in awe of Matt. Btw, watching a whole live set is something else. He adds so much to the songs, with solos and more complex phrasings 💦
Why did you did this to me!!??? In my head it relatively imposible to play the drums of this song, now with the isolated drums so we can see all of these crazy patterns and odd time signatures you make me realize that is absolutely imposible times 10 to even do a cover at least sounding more or less like this!!! My god this guy is a machine!!!! An for machines this is a challenging style! And my friend you being able to analyze and play this makes you part of the club of these absurd hyper talented drummers. Thanks for the video.
I absolutely love how El Estepario is quite literally one of the best drummers on the planet, but still geeks out on other phenomenal drummers. That's fucking class.
When El Estepario Siberiano gets excited about another drummer, you know he is special. With Matt being my all time favorite, this really makes me happy!
Love your drum set! The color is very special! You're an amazing drummer my god the speed and technic on you is incredible! Also what's that on your snare?? Cheers from ISRAEL :)
It feels crazy to say this watching the first clip, but Matt has actually gotten so much better since! He was stellar before, but his more recent playthroughs are actually on another level!
Hey there! Thanks for stopping by!
if you want to support my work,
just comment whoever you want me to react next!
THANKS!
@ElEsteparioSiberiano - Matt GarSTka ...not GarTSka ;-) Change "T" and "S'.😀😀😀
What about Nathan Camarena
Thank you for this great videos man

How about a video reaction to the drummer Jorge Garrido ? Hahahha
"You hear it and you think you can play it. Trust me you cannot"
I think you overestimate my confidence
exactly.. it should be "you hear it and you know you can't play it. trust me, you're correct."
No one can hit a ghost note like me. It's alllll ghost notes tho baby 😂
When AAL came to Japan, I happened to see him in a coffee shop.

I'm sorry but if true that's fucking ridiculous. And I love Matt I'm a huge fan.

Not exactly humble by definition, lol... he is the best.
Garstka, Haake and Duplantier are the 3 KINGS of ghost notes in metal drumming
Also Matt Halpern
Jay Postones is criminally underrated in these talks, dude's snare is haunted af

@@Hellion6325 TesseracT stay with tha ghost notes.
Anup has a great style. Very ghostly.
There is no Nobel prize in Mathematics. But maybe there should be one so it can be given to Matt Garstka.

nah. Tomas Haake. Meshuggahs rythms is just more complex. Matt Gartska would be number 2 tho

Matt Garstka and Dave Rucki (Sentinels drummer) are amazing. Thank you so much for breaking down this song!
Mike Mangini
Or Riccardo Merlini for their speed with one hand just as you are also a candidate for excellent one handed playing
Mike’s coolest thing in my opinion is playing cymbals upside down (other than his incredible composing ability as a drummer)
Awesome video as always, ghost notes in Spanish are "notas Fantasma" that's super cool
I've always liked your breakdowns. You are very good at that.
Love Matthew, Miguel Lamas has great single too. Cheers from Palermo (Sicily)
Fantastic breakdown thanks so much.
Love your drum set! The color is very special! You're an amazing drummer my god the speed and technic on you is incredible! Also what's that on your snare?? Cheers from ISRAEL :)
I love your vids you post, I'm not a newbie and I'm FAR from a pro, I watch your vids faithfully your a awesome teacher. Thanks for all your videos
The thumbnail is a master peace!!! And Matt is the one that's pushing the boundaries!!!!
You are really great at breaking down his drumming style. I like your videos. 🙂👍
There's no Nobel price for math.. You could say "that drummer deserves a Fields medal".
It feels crazy to say this watching the first clip, but Matt has actually gotten so much better since! He was stellar before, but his more recent playthroughs are actually on another level!
Fucking so clean! So fucking powerful on the hits! What a savage!
Beautiful breakdown (love the humor as well), and beautiful kit!
