I mean, you're allowed to have that opinion but plenty of modern bands do it live with no auto-tune and no second chances. Come up with something better...
This song was used in Ghost. This was a live performance and it was flawless. That voice is epic and we will never hear another voice or song sung like this. Bobby Hatfield had a once in a lifetime voice.
After viewing about 150 reaction videos for this tune, I just now realized he had no "feedback" speakers at his feet on the stage. One small microphone, a very fine band behind him, a live TV audience surrounding him (nerves?!), and his raw talent -- this must be saved as an American treasure in the Library of Congress.
I am 81 and have heard several artist before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

@@theresarandall7448 Agreed. IMO the ever-present activities of most all background dancers adds nothing at all to the songs and is simply an annoying distraction , IMO. The reaction of most ladies even today indicates how gifted both these incredible artists were when they first appeared on the scene. I know a lot of guys over the t=-years have said the same thing "Man! I wish I had that voice", referring to BOTH artists. I sure did and I was singer a few years ago. My voice was in the range of the baritine, Bill Medly. Even though I have the same vocal range, I do NOT have his pure soul. I have never heard anyone who did or does even now. One syllable and his voice is instantly recognized by anyone who lived through their era. Bobby Hatfield was not even in a 'field of of singers'; he was the ONLY man with a voice, delivery, and a purely natural presentation like that. Their teaming up created a never-to-be repeated emotional experience. God in His wisdom, broke the mold after Bill and Bobby.
Back in the day, you got one instrument and you dedicated your life to it. These days you can download an entire studio and most people don't spend as much time with the entire suite than people back in the days spent on one single device. You had to become a local act first before they considered you for a global market. Today, they sign up artists, write their albums and immediately market them globally to maximise profits.
@@liquidminds yep and that's new bubblegum factory songs and guess what these songs you won't remember 50 years time compare to timeless classics like righteous brothers and others
@@Jeffro5564 there's still good musicians all over the charts. I mean, not the singers or bands, but the hand full of producers in the background, who write and produce every song and manage to get people to buy it over and over and over again. And the few bands that are actually good musicians, playing as a band, don't really participate in the stupidity that is the music industry.... they tour and sell their merch. They are happy, despite not being played on the radio.
Spot on, today social media allows budding artists who may have taken years to come to light to be in our faces almost immediately, but the flip side is that is dilutes the talent pool so much. The kids that perform today have not earned their dues in any way shape or form, that's not their fault it's just that the music industry is out of synch with today's market. There is little time taken to develop and nurture craft and musicianship, nowadays if you look good and can even half hold a tune you are marketed as a "big thing". Too much is getting "dumbed down" for the sake of just getting content out there and maximising profits..
You asked if this song was from the movie 'Ghost'. It was used in 'Ghost', but was first released in the early to mid 1960s; long before the Movie. As for where the other brother was during this performance, he was there, as was their parents. I think he might have been playing an instrument for the song, but then perhaps he joined the audience to see his brother perform the song. This song has a special place in my heart, as it moves me deeply. The was a girl at one of the High School dances I attended who came to me and asked me to dance with her. She had been burned over a large part of the right side of her face and body, but unlike most boys at that age, I did not look so much at the outer appearance of a girl; rather I saw her inner beauty, and this girl whose name was Jamie had great inner beauty. Yes I danced with her, and it was 'Unchained Melody' that we danced to. We were cheek to cheek as we danced, which to me is the only way to dance with a girl to this song. I was on Cloud Nine that night!
Something about how gentle his runs are give them far more power. The effortless and quiet and simple beauty of his voice is just crazy. Don't get me wrong, I love some power house vocals. Whitney Houston on the National Anthem, Celine Dion on everything she sings, James Brown 'Man's World', I love those crazy loud belts that people can do. But THIS is some crazy talent. To have so much power in such a soft and controlled voice. It's really hard to think of a comparison in that way.
The song was used in "Ghost" but was originally written in 1955 for a movie about prisons called "Unchained". Hence the name "Unchained Melody".But when Bobby Hatfield sang it 10 years later (the Righteous Brother here) the song became world renown.

So this was Bobby Hatfield, half of the Righteous Brothers duo. The other half was Bill Medley. They usually sang duos, with Bobby’s counter-tenor voice (that means he can reach the same notes as a female soprano!) and Bill with his bass-baritone voice - listen to that deep rich voice in You’ve Lost That Lovin Feelin. Anyways, this was a solo song so they flipped a coin... but it was still very much a team effort because Bill arranged the music for both the studio version and for this live version, and he also played the piano in the musical backing. I’ve left more info in the general comments section for this video, if you’re interested ...

This is a live recorded performance. No other record of him singing this exact version. I've seen at least one video that they did lip sync; it was identical to the album track. But not this performance. No lip sync here.
In my humble opinion: Simply the greatest live performance EVER!
Bobby Hatfield’s voice, that song - it’s like a prayer. I have a recording of him singing Somewhere from West Side Story. I’ve listened to it hundreds of times and it still gives me chills. He was a gift.
Thankyou Nan Rod, I hadn't heard it - agree it's a prayer and touches the soul
This was the love song for boys who were in Vietnam to their wives and sweethearts back home.
“Wait for me... wait for me.”
“Are you still mine?”
gives me goosebumps every time I hear this song! Jamel's reaction just makes it better.
Bobby had a cold that night and this is their first national show, coast to coast, with his mom in the audience. No Pressure!
Watching your face while listening to him hit those high notes was a double scoop of fun!
👍🏾🤣
Smooth Soulfulness of Bobby Hatfield RIP sir.
This was my Cousin and his wife's (my friend) song. They passed away, young, in a boating accident. We played it at their funeral. They mentioned the river to the sea, always gives me chills 💔
My dad took my younger brother & me to see their show in our small Appalachian Tennessee town. It was my first concert, and I fell in love with not only my dad again, but also this new “Blue Eyed Soul”, as it was known at the time. I was over the moon happy! Thanks for the memories, Jamel! There’s a reason why I so love your reaction videos, and it’s why yours are the only reactions I watch!😊
I’ve heard numerous artists have a bash at singing this song, but none of the could ever reach the high notes that he did so effortlessly! He makes it seem so easy but it really isn’t! Beautiful!
PLEASE LISTEN to LeAnn Rhimes.
I think that MAYBE (??) she might be the ONLY Other Singer who does justice to this BEAUTIFUL SONG, But FOR SURE The Righteous Brothers VERSION WILL ALWAYS BE THE BEST 👌 VERSION To EVER BE RECORDED (EVER).
His BEAUTIFUL 💙 BLUE EYES ARE SO DREAMY, may he Rest In Peace. 💔 😢
Plus, it was recorded live! No lip-sync! 😍😍
Exactly 👍🏾
No auto tune either! Pure voical magic.
Exactly! No auto tune!
No need for sexy dancers either
Back when it required actual talent to be a famous musical act.
And the truth is, If they appeared today, they would destroy their concorrence!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your show is so good….fun watching you sway and hardly any interruptions!💋❤️👍
He sang and made it look so effortless as if he was just having a good conversation and man the world listened
Well said...
One of the most stunning performances of a tune ever.....moves me to deep emotion every time. Beautiful song done magnificently.
Jenn Righter... You might want to reword 'how gentle his runs are give them far more power.'
Awwww. 😂💛
Meat Loaf. Powerhouse.
@@brianwilson3952 Lol, love this humor haha.
@@JennRighter At least you got the joke. Lol. 💛
Great comment..it is crazy good..I know what you mean
The song was used in "Ghost" but was originally written in 1955 for a movie about prisons called "Unchained". Hence the name "Unchained Melody".But when Bobby Hatfield sang it 10 years later (the Righteous Brother here) the song became world renown.
Al Hibbler sang the original give it a listen.
@@petej3800 I know who Al Hibbler was _ I will.
in 1955, it was done by Vito and the Salutations, and they weren't the first either
@@josephobrien8019 Joseph, Thanks for the info. In 1955 I was 4. When the Righteous Brothers did it around 1964-1965 I did not even know Unchained Melody came from the movie about a jail prisoner. As a teen I never understood why it was called Unchained Melody. What was unchained about the melody? Shows you how ignorant I was about the song until just recently.
Oh, I got the "chills" with this one!!!! so smooth!!!!
Thats the best live singing performance I've ever seen and heard.
Better than studio, too.
Sorry, but it wasn't live. He is an incredible singer but he was lip synching here. How can you tell? First of all, where was the band? Whenever you don't see a band it's a sign that they are lip synching. Second, it''s really, really hard to match up your mouth with the recording for every second of the sone. There are always parts where it doesn't match up exactly. Watch at @ and @, his stops singing but the singing continues, for just a little bit. Third, the recording equipment back them was primitive compared to today and it would have been nearly impossible, on a live performance, to exactly balance the volume all of the various instruments and his voice like they are balanced here. Also, televisions stations back then didn't want to take a chance that a wrong note would be sung and would insist on lip synching. Think about all of the songs performed on American Bandstand or ALL of the other variety shows, all were lip synching. He actually has a fantastic voice, but this performance was just not live.
glaxo welcome: It was indeed live. Listen to the studio recording, he doesn’t end it anything like this, there is no big finish like this on the studio recording.
@@glaxowelcome1907 The music was recorded, but he sang this live. That's why no band.
"I thought these dudes were black!" And I lost it lol. That's what everyone thinks. Amazing Bobby with his golden voice.😍
Got my first kiss to this song. Absolutely magical and divine. Great memories.
I got mine during the movie silence of the lambs.
Guessing many babies were made to this song as well lol
I’m 74 years old...Fantastic! Just had to close my eyes and sway back and forth to the music! Thank you, Jamel. I watch you all the time, you take me back to my teens. Thank you!
50s,60s,70s best decades of music, I'm glad I witness many great performances.
"Unchained Melody" was first written and released in 1955. A bunch of folks recorded it but this is the best.
👍🏾
Do the Oldies version with Vito & the Salutations!
@@stevecasucci7136 I heard that version before but didn't know who did it. Fun, but I'll still go with Bobby. Thanks.
@@stevecasucci7136 BTW, a young Leann Rimes also has a good cover.
The Brit, Jimmy Young did a pretty good version too, maybe a little too 'clean' for some, but he can definitely sing!
Bill Medley, the tall guy, deep voice, sang a song from "Dirty Dancing" with Jennifer Warnes called "Ive Had The Time Of My Life", a MUST hear!
Yes!
The loveliest love song ever.
This song was around long before "Ghost."
That's how it came into my life. But my momma remembers when it was cool long before, too.
Yep 1965
Pretty sure he knows it was long before that, but I think he's just referencing that for someone his age it was popularized heavily by that movie.
@@davidjack7418 doesn't seem like he knows. "Ghost" is not the reason the song was popular. It was a hit 25 years before the movie came out.
@@elaines5750 It also re-entered the charts in over a dozen countries including the US Billboard Top 100 as a result of the movie "Ghost", so yes it absolutely was popularized by the movie for many people that may have never heard it before. It charted in 1965 and again in 1991. One can respect the original and the attention it gained due to a popular movie at the same time.
Truth doesn't have to try hard. Bobby was feeling every word of this heartfelt song. In turn I felt the Love he expressed so honestly.
I played this song incessantly when it first came out, and then when it was re released after the movie Ghost came out. God, what a gorgeous voice Bobby Hatfield had! And the production of that song was amazing. Miss that music being on the radio.
I mean if this isn’t one of the most beautifully sang song.
R & B and soul music sung by whites back then was called "blue-eyed soul."

One of the great belt buckle polishing songs of all time. 😉 And sung by a first class tenor. RIP Bobby Hatfield 😭
You're exactly right, soul isn't a color it's something that comes naturally, it's a feeling that gives you the ability to express something from the heart and make the listener feel exactly what you're talking about, take Chris Stapleton and Tennessee Whiskey, that is soul, love me some soul music!!
Greatness I didn't now how to dance but this song put me on the dance floor ❤
Chills every time! Beautiful voice, beautiful love song.
"Where was the other one at? That was just the Righteous BROTHER."
I LOL'd
There is another one, Bill Medley but they flipped a coin for this song. Thank goodness Bobby won! History was made!
@@ingfig1 Yes. Bobby was a counter-tenor, and a lot of sopranos couldn't reach the high register that he could. Most people think those high notes were falsetto. They were not.
@@dawnaberry8452 .. yes, I heard one of the “reactions” by a singing coach who said that it was full voice not falsetto - so thank you for corroborating. He was an amazing singer.
This was an era where people had to be able to sing. Performing half naked wasn't even an option. And I made a mistake during your last reaction. It was this song that someone suggested that Dimash sing. Either one would make my day.
👍🏾 Yeah he could sing anything
Chandell, yep, either one! Lol
He is more intuned to SOUL than a lot of "brothers" I have heard singing. What I love the most, is that this is WAY BACK in the 60's, when you couldn't really fake your talent.

Great reaction video! Really enjoyed your reactions and input of this great song.
It was the music of Ghost. The song was written 1955. The Righteous Brothers did not write it, but this is, hands-down, the best version ever recorded.
Pure magic how did we go from that to 2019 what went wrong
🤦🏾♂️
No lip synching, no studio filters just a man ,a mic talent and soul. Nuff said! The song was put out way before ghost. You are looking at the beginnings of authentic blue eyed soul.
Most likely the pinnacle of blue eyed soul. Everything else was just floundering at the foot of this monster of a performance!

That was a beautiful performance....REAL talent!
