I grew up not far from the Piddle on Wareham Common. The water voles disappeared in 1974 due to mink. There used to be native crayfish in the river, hopefully still present. The main fish in the river back in the 70s were dace, roach, brown and seatrout, and salmon plus occasional flounders, eels and mullet. More recently there have been perch but never seen a chub though they're slowly establishing themselves in the nearby Frome.

That’s a lovely bit of history. I’d be really surprised if there went any chub in the Piddle as they are one of our most prolific river species. Really sad about the voles. They are quite common on the banks of our local Canal here in Gloucester.

@@vintagevantics Many years ago the local river board/authority were adament that no chub or barbel were to be put in the Piddle or Frome as these two rivers were primarily game rivers. The Frome has more species than the Piddle; it's had grayling for many years whereas the Piddle, despite occasional references stating otherwise, doesn't seem to have them. The connection of the Piddle to some gravel pits about 40 years ago allowed perch, pike and rudd to become more common in the river. Mink were the scourge of water voles, and although rare nowadays, are still around although the resurgent otters don't tolerate them on their territories. Chub seem to have got into the Frome (barbel, too) through the activities of a group from Hampshire who also stocked them into the Exe, Itchen and Test.
