I don't think Phoenix was portrayed as an evil entity in the trailer, it seems to be a symbiotic relationship with the main character (see how one of his attacks is a phoenix wing?)... Ifrit, on the other hand, might as well be an evil summon. Another thing I found interesting was that they said, "the legacy of the crystals has shaped our history for long enough." Does that mean they're killing it? Maybe the crystals themselves are "evil" this time around?
I have ZERO issues with a dark fantasy, "Final Fantasy" at all. To me it's going back to that special era of FFIV-FFVI and I lived through that. It has an Ivalice overworld feel and a more serious "mature" game. I don't get how people want cute and charming but yet have a serious and engaging story at the same time. I've been wanting and waiting for a more oldschool medieval FF game. Do not sleep on the creators of FFXI and FFXIV, those worlds are pure Final Fantasy to me. You should at least buy FFXIV and play through the main scenario, you can work through it in a month easily I think. It's wonderful. I don't get the whole naming the character at all since the story isn't like Elder Scrolls where you make the hero and all that. I get it for channel reasons and everything but GameDave has to name his character Dave. What if it's like a female lead character? Davette? ;) I can always adapt to more current battle systems, I mean heck, I Platinumed Bloodborne and The Witcher 3, which you have to complete on Death March so modern RPG battle systems I can role with.
@@Captain_Neckbeard just have to get used to it, that's the point. Adapting to new and different battle systems just takes a bit of skill and patience. I love the chill and relaxed gameplay of turned based RPGs but so many of them you can outlevel the challenge.
-Gladiolus said "Rah-muh," but other characters said "Rah-moo." -There were moogles in Type-0, so it's possible for them to appear here. -A hard "c" sounds correct for Coeurls. -The fireball spells look more like FF7R, not FF15's giant explosions.
I had not enjoyed a singleplayer final fantasy game since 12 until 7R came along. That part also makes me cautiously optimistic. But a lot less so then I was for 7R. I adore FF14, and having Yoshi-P and other FF14 vets working on FF16 sounds super fucking promising to me. 7R also broke that streak of me not liking any singleplayer final fantasy games that I had for over 10 years. So that also makes me more optimistic. One major issue I had with FF15 was the combat. I loved 7R's combat, and apperantly a dude that worked on the combat of DMCV and dragons dogma is the combat director of this game, which is also super exciting to me. I also love the darker medieval setting. Final fantasy can be almost anything in my eyes. Dark or lighthearted, inviting or uninviting, medieval or sci fi. As long as it is good, I am down. And a (almost?) straight up medieval setting feels more than a little refreshing at this point. Especially with FF7R being a long running thing. So honestly, while part of me is still cautious, I mostly feel free to be really optimistic and excited again.
I think Joshua summoned both Phoenix and Ifrit. I think in his rage, he unintentionally called ifrit. So think of Phoenix and Ifrit as the light and dark side of the kid. Summoning 2 entities has never happened before, Even the soldier says is impossible after Ifrit appears.
It's funny you mention the overuse of crystals in the recent FFs, the trailer itself has a meta commentary on it lol. "The legacy of the crystals has shaped our history for long enough". Yoshi P's team seems to like making meta jokes, we also got a dragoon floor tanking which is a FF14 meme.
Much like you Dave, I'm cautiously optimistic. But it is nice to have Try's input here - I know he's mentioned FFXIV on his Sunday night live streams before. I've watched it a multitude of times and I'm not sure what to think yet. It harkens back to very old school Final Fantasy, but also has hints of Witcher as well. Certainly different from what I'm used to with a FF game.

If you all want to get acquainted with what direction Final Fantasy XVI will be taking just play Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen. It's basically Devil May Cry with way more RPG mechanics and a Dragon's Dogma with a final fantasy coat of paint sounds fantastic to me
The trailer made me recall of Final Fantasy 2, including the remake for DS. Remember the team characters parents and whole town were ripped off in the beggining of the game, so the story was very serious. Actually, this is the first Final Fantasy since 9 that I am really excited for. I had expectatives for 13, but it ended being very boring, trying to use MMO's style into a single player game, I hope this does not repeat here
FFX had summons that fought with you technically. Its mainly that the series, through more tech, gives you more options and widens the way things are used. Summons are still an "ability", but they get more clout than just just an animated sequence that goes away you sit and watch it. All Square really does is expand old systems with more options. Might just be people getting older that are overwhelmed with those options, not me though, my 36 year old self. Maybe its because I have played every FF since 3, so I know about and can feel the evolution they've made over the years, so it never really feels "not FF" to me. That action rpgs have been a thing since the first Star Ocean, from way back. I just...have people forgotten what rpgs actually are like and headcanoning just their favorites?
Dave perfectly summed up my attitude when he said, “I don’t have time for this.” Yes, I know he was talking about FF14, but there are just too many great games out there I want to play and not nearly enough time. No way I’m committing to any “epic” game unless it really grabs me. And this did not. Monster Hunter Stories 2 on the other hand, that had me excited from the git go.
@@scottmichaelhedge5055 Nothing bad in it but for sure it's something new for the series, where you ALWAYS had party members controlled either by you or by your comrades (MMORPGs).
I'm cautiously optimistic for FFXVI too. It gave me a Game of Thrones vibe. If it has the combat systems of FF7R and a compelling story I'm down with it.
Find a fantasy 16 looks really good and I believe it probably will get an m rating. I wish I knew the name of the main character in The final fantasy XIV trailers, A realm reborn and Shadow bringers , the main character that's in all the final fantasy 14 trailers, I don't know that character's name. He is absolutely a great looking character. Of course we all know nobody's as good as cloud but I think the character from final fantasy 14 is very handsome. The CGI trailers not the gameplay trailers. Heavensward, I think that's the name of the trailer.
I genuinely think SquareEnix should get a new art director to handle Final Fantasy main line. I'm so used to this art style that the trailer doesn't look so impressive / next gen anymore.
I don't have much time to game either nowadays but FF XIV is pretty pick up and play it puts story before mmo stuff and it's even easier than ever to jump in right now.
FF16 is like the early FF games I agree, it looks like 14 but 12 as well, also 12 was Mediterranean Medieval based and character models did not look JRPG like, the tone of the trailer reminds me of the Ardin Expansion of FF15. I hope the airships are magic based, no real technology please.
I am just enjoying these FF normies with no FF14 content being super confused with FF16. Missing out on FF14 is like Dr Gero from DBZ not getting data from Namik and missing the entire super saiyans arc.
They may not know that a person who worked on the combat from that will be working on this game. But if you meant "nobody mentioned other action rpgs" than yeah. But I am afraid a lot of the FF fanbase kinda forgets action rpgs like Star Ocean or Tales existed alongside FF for a long time. Dragon's Dogma also being a cult classic that is very niche means it went under many a radar. To some turn based battles are the only way rpgs should be played, silly, but sadly that is the way some think.

Now it takes 7 years to make it super epic n pretty.but there's just so much that's unforgettable. After 10, and than playing 12 a bit than seeing 13 and starting it, I was just done
Final Fantasy 9 is my favorite game of all time. And obviously favorite FF. So this is the closest to classic 1-5 FF as we got since 9, so I'm so happy. I just ain't thrilled it's not turned based. But I'll take it if it ain't made for babies like 15 and have zero challenge and all flash no depth (12 was close but story and characters were awful and story was rushed so didn't give me that FF feel)
The game looks pretty generic westernized FF..pretty much like your generic Devil May Cry/FF15 button mashing clone... IF what you guys say about it being a nameless hero with a job system, it will then just be an Elder Scrolls Copy...man im really not buying the hype bandwagon tbh. SO far its pretty "meh"
Final fantasy is dead dude. I can't stand the whole action rpg transition squarenix has made. Its just not the spirit of Final fantasy. I liked 12 but thats about it I hated 13, 15 was overrated, X-2 was terrible. FFX was squareenix last true Final Fantasy.
