"He so down" - welcome to the entire Smiths discography.
t james I thought the same exact thing
Yep!
lol
Having been a Smiths and Morrissey fan for 30 years now, I've known a lot of fans of theirs who had things like depression or bipolar disorder, but were lifted out of those feelings at least in part by these songs. It's like hearing a song for the first time and saying, "Yes! That guy knows exactly how I feel!". Also, since the early days of the Smiths, fans have been throwing flowers onstage during the concerts, and Morrissey dances with the flowers in hand. Morrissey fans also have a tendency to climb up on stage to get a chance to hug him, and he allows them to. Morrissey is also a longtime vegan and animal rights activist. The music of Smiths and Morrissey appeals to the outsiders, the ignored, the lonely, the depressed, the LGBT community, the celibate, the awkward, and the black sheep. The fact that people have been climbing up on stage to hug him for 35 years speaks to the fact that the songs are written for those who are deprived of love and acceptance. And to paraphrase a Smiths song, "Ask me, I won't say no, how could I?".
In other news: Water is wet! ;P
The Smiths are one of the best bands of all time. The blend of Morrissey's heavy deep cynical and at times brilliantly funny lyrics with Johnny Marr's beautiful music is one of life's biggest and most exquisite joys! Morrissey really is up there with Oscar Wilde as one of my all time favourite writers.
Exactly. I never really got music before I got into the smiths, it feels like someone made tailored music for me if you know what I mean. It’s so so perfect that it makes me feel connected to it. I’m only a teenager but I can tell that Morrissey and the Smiths will forever be my favourite band because there is nothing quite like them
This charming man _ Is so iconic!!!!
The scene in Ferris Bueller where this plays while Cameron’s having his epiphany is so wrenchingly perfect
Perfectly said. I love that version, and it is heartbreaking.
The verison you hear in Ferris Bueller is a cover by Dream Academy@@jacknewman9256
My favorite band since I was a teenager. The songs are still perfect ! I love them!
My favorite song by The Smiths is also in my top twenty all time favorite songs: Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now. Great lyrics.
I love that song too. But I hate it when I'm in that actual miserable situation and the coronavirus is not helping but making it more difficult now.
"I would go out tonight, but I haven't got a stitch to wear" 😂😂 Love that tune. God bless you Morrissey, you legend.
Ministry26 my oldest brother used to sing that to my other brother when my other brother was grounded...always makes me smile 😊
He is one of the best lyricists
You’ve started down a great rabbit hole. More Smiths, then Morissey as solo artist
The guitarist for The Smiths, Johnny Marr, just worked on the amazing new James Bond song with Billie Eilish and her brother. And Morrissey is an icon, he's wonderful.
wait Marr did that, he is one of my all time favourite guitarists
The idelibel music of my youth. Oh teen angst! This Charming Man is the absolute best. Marr's signature guitar sound will forever live.
God Marr is such a great player so often overlooked.
@@pedrogab8151 Have you ever checked out Marr's autobiography? It's called Set the Boy Free. Worth a look. Cheers.
@@gorey4more837 I haven't but I will now. ty
gorey4more alvey Agreed. This Charming Man is by far my favorite smiths song, that riff is iconic at the least.
@@pnw8836 I hear that guitar riff in This Charming Man, and it is quintessential Marr. Blissful. Gives me goosebumps!
“He sounds down!” Welcome to The Smiths. Lol
You have opened Pandora’s box with Morrissey/Smiths. He just released a new album.
And it’s his best for many a year. Absolutely love it.
29memyselfandi it’s a great album and love it too
He’s brilliant.
Your Musical attention span is incredible , and Your response can be so halarious . For a Young lady that's so Courious about Old School Music , it's amazing how far ahead of Your time , You Are about it .
When Cameron from Ferris Buller’s Day off kept staring at the picture in the museum. Great song!
The Smiths- There is a light that never goes out
Morrissey- Seasick yet still docked
WOWWWWW I forgot about 'Seasick' OMG what a killer
We'll Let You Know is also great! Your Arsenal is Morrisseys best solo album.
@@scotthandler3314 how sad are we? And how sad have we been?
@@kristianstocksen5755 We'll let you know. But only if you're really interested.
One of my favorites from them. Thanks for doing this.
thank you for watching
India Reacts been with ya since the beginning
Check out their song, How soon is now.
Vlad Hogan Hell yes, their best song in my opinion.
@@jkt4748
All the phonies love that one.
It's like when someone says Light My Fire is the Doors best song.
Gimpy McChillwick Are you a paid troll? Or just naturally an asshole.. My bet is the latter of the two.
@@jkt4748
Better than a phony
Gimpy McChillwick Phoney? Due to the fact that I like that particular song? Get a f’n grip.
The Smiths are great:
"Asleep" - more sadness
"Panic"
"Some girls are bigger than others" (don't let you trick by the begining)
Some girls mothers are bigger than other girls' motherz
Asleep is probably the saddest song ever created lol
The Smiths are great. Although you haven't chosen any of their great songs.
Asleep. What a song
"This Charming Man" is a song about a country boy who comes to the city and becomes a male prostitute. The charming man is his rich client. At least, that's what I got out of it and knowing a bit about Morrissey in general.
Nah
I don't think that's what it's about.
I think it is literally just about a confused (and out of place) boy who punctures his bike on hill who is greeted by a guy who pulls up in a car and offers him a ride. The guy then asks him to go out dancing/drinking that night but the boy is either too poor or too insecure to go. However 'why pamper life's complexities', he wants to be adventurous.
The bit about the ring though I have no idea.
@David Clinging I'd give these song facts a read plus and direct quote from Morrissey:
www.songfacts.com/facts/the-smiths/this-charming-man
@David Clinging Well no-one knows for sure. I was referring to Morrissey's quote about not having enough money or clothes to go out. Which is really what the song is about, not sexuality like other people say.
For the hillside bit, that is your interpretation, I never have that image appear in my mind when hearing this song but if you do then good for you.
@David Clinging I see that line more about Morrissey (or whoever the protagonist is) allowing himself to hitch a ride from this stranger. Why question if nature will make a man of him yet so he can fend for himself when it's clear he doesn't have to do everything alone. I think the line literally means why ponder about life and desolation when I could just get it in this car and have live. The leather runs smooth - a well kept upper class car - extremely welcoming to a boy in poverty so why not get in?
You can hear a version of this song in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, when they visit the Art Institute in Chicago.
aaaah, dipping your toes into the 80's New Wave pool. temps are fine jump in and enjoy it!!
Pewww
Have always loved the Smiths, thanks for choosing. Been watching a few ‘reaction’ you tubers recently and you are the best.
I concur. She's excellent. I'm so glad she's reacting to this group. Peace and Love
Saw this and immediately clicked! I LOVE The Smiths so much! Such good music and love Morrisseys voice
I must learn more about this band. The lyrics really gripped me.
Florida Hiker . You haven’t heard off the Smiths ? 😧
You should they have some amazing songs, love the lyrics, he says stuff you never expect to hear. So different from the crowd. Morrissey is an iconic person who will influence for hundreds of years.
Yes! Go down the rabbit hole.
They're fantastic! Good luck on your journey exploring such an awesome band.

Where there's music and there's people
And they're young and alive
Driving in your car

Because I want to see people and I

Driving in your car
Oh, please don't drop me home
Because it's not my home, it's their

And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine
Take me out tonight
Take me anywhere, I don't care
I don't care, I don't care
And in the darkened underpass
I thought oh God, my chance has come at last
(but then a strange fear gripped me and I
Just couldn't ask)

Awesome! You always have the best reactions and a quick understanding of the lyrics. I recommend How Soon Is Now? by The Smiths. It’s not only their most popular song but also one of my favorites.
Haunting guitar riff.
It was popular for the beat and riff but the phonies love it best.
How Soon is Now was so overplayed. I recommend "Handsome Devil." Should be an interesting reaction.
Music is used in Ferris Buellers day off in the art museum scene. The cover by Dream Academy is used though.
Dream Academy's cover is absolutely gorgeous ... both in terms of singing and instrumentals .. one of the best covers in music history ever...
She's diggin' Andy Roarke and Mike Joyce hitting the rhythm! Love it!
I love your perspective and insights I never thought of as a 30 year long time Smiths fan.
Please Please is from the time I was in high school. Now it reminds me of how bad it feels to have your heart broken for the first time when you’re a teenager. It feels like your life is over. Now it’s a happy song for me because life got better. That sad little kid I was finally got happiness.
I cried and laughed and wondered to these songs in the 80s ❤️❤️❤️
Morrisey is a interesting character. He was smoking hot when he was young. I had a crush on him in the early 90's. The Smiths had some great music. I wasn't as into his solo stuff.
His solo isn’t as great, but Viva Hate is pretty equal I’d say.
Morrissey smoking hot… there is hope for all
@@liamfraserobrien When he was young he sure was
You have an amazing gift of being able to interpret the lyrics, and as a smiths fan of 30 years I can say that you are always so spot on, with all the smiths reactions I've seen you do you just nail it ... even more so with your emotional reaction, you are able to groove along with the music but you are obviously paying close attention to the lyrics. Please please please ... do MORE Smiths and Morrissey songs. "Asleep" "I know it's over" "well I Wonder"
what a lovely person you are. Nice reactions on your part. Thank you for this analysis
Great song!! Great reaction!!
thank you
You're doing my night with your reactions, I'm binging now ❤
The Smiths, Been listening to them since I was in Junior High in the late 80s...❤
Good to see some younger folks from the community reacting to an all-time fav. The Smiths are up there for me with Prince and Bootsy Collins. I remember being that depressed 15-year-old in the mid-80s hearing "Bigmouth Strikes Again" for the first time. The feeling was ineffable. I was absolutely hooked after that. Morrissey is... uh interesting nowadays. I own all The Smiths albums and many of Morrissey's solo work. I'm glad you enjoyed the songs.
You hit the nail right on the head “this charming man” is causing all those things we can relate too.
Listened to charming man thousands of times and it still gives me goosebumps
2 minutes of pure heart break.. What a song..
India you are so right about This Charming Man! Very good!
If you haven't already check out How Soon is Now. One of the best songs of the 1980s.
Am sooo glad you enjoy our British music 🙏🙏🙏
I'd recommend listening to the live album they released, Rank, which was recorded in Hammersmith, Hamburg and Manchester. I was lucky enough to see them live andvthey were absolutely superb, a lot heavier and unlike some other bands, they were and are masters of their instruments and brilliant players and composers. Rourke and Joyce are very much under rated as a rhythm section.
So much talk of Moz and Marr, and rightfully so. But Rourke and his amazing bass lines are so intricate and solid they are the true "hidden" genius behind The Smiths.
You are awesome thanks for your real ness vids. So fun!! 💕👏
"There is a light that never goes out" definitely one of the best pop song written.
I think you’re truly fabulous, India! Very few people really *listen* to songs the way that you do, and you have so much empathy, kindness and open-mindedness. I’d love to have you as a neighbour and friend, but that would be a bit difficult, seeing as I live in London 😘x
Your explanation of both songs is so on point!
I was in my early 20's when these guys hit the music scene. They resonated with a lot of young people who were reserved and lacking in confidence. The Smiths articulated their feelings. A very important band in the history of music - just don't listen to them for too long! Such honesty and introspection needs to be taken in small doses!
Beautiful song amazing band ❤
I always find it interesting that folk get so many differing interpretations and emotions from songs. Several others have 'reacted' to this song and the ones I've seen all seem so different in what they perceive. And that is one of the beauties of music.
So nice to see you react to The Smiths. One of my favorite bands.
This charming man always sends shivers down me back weird
love this band thanks for reactions xo
Headmaster Ritual, Hand in Glove and Handsome Devil are my faves
My two fave Smiths songs. Good on ya, mate!
One of my favourite songs 😍
The Smiths! Fookin A
Hell yeah.
Yeah rock on dude.
Slayer and Smith's yeakkhhhh
Once you hear ‘How Soon is Now?’, instant hook.
Welcome to the best band EVER! India, any smiths song is an experience. Love them so much.
you have listened to the sad one, you have listened to the full of energy one, now is time to listen the crazy mixed emotional one: there's is a light that never goes out ! uuuuhhhhhf (that youll understand)...
This Charming Man changed my life! What an incredible song!
Love these classics
Love it. Another reaction that shows India's open mind. But I will say that I've never quite interpreted the song that way. He's not questioning why the Charming man is paying attention to him. Its simply a tale of meeting an older man who charms the pants off him. (terrible pun intended)
My favorite band ever, and This Charming Man is my favorite song from them. I could literally recommend their whole discography, but I’ll suggest Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now and Ask
Morrissey has one of the best voices in music. Pick almost anything from The Smiths & it’s a winner!
Love your enthusiasm. The older I get the more I like The Smiths oh and Elvis for some reason
Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What is one of my favorite songs.
Well done for giving a few more Smiths songs a go, The Smiths are the most important British band of all time.
I fell in love with this song as a kid when I heard it in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Beautiful song! this charming man is also a banger
I've known about The Smiths for many years but didn't care to listen to them until this one time I was driving and listening to the radio. A caller requested This Charming Man, I raised the volume to see what all the hype was about this band. I was instantly hooked as soon as I heard that song.
Morrissey is the BEST!!!
Morrissey is a legend. His new album sounds great too
love your reactions :) and how you interpret the lyrics
THANK YOU FOR REACTING TO THE SMITHS! 👏👏👏They weren't just a band, they were a movement in social culture. Morrissey's iconic lyrics spoke to the shy, the misfits, the outsiders, the misunderstood. They don't call him the 'Mozziah' for nothing! 💗
You nailed Morrissey’s personality perfectly in your description lol.
I'm very impressed you reviewed The Smiths...
This is someone crying out for a big hug
YES I saw the thumbnail and yelled "YES!!!!!" cncjdbhf
Awesome band
the boy with the thorn in hs side is my favourite smiths. high tempo
over here we leave the u out of favorite because we believe in being economical.
I had a Smiths tshirt in high school with this green image, an artist friend of mine made it for me, I was way cool back then lol
Please, please, please reaches deep down into your soul
The soundtrack to my youth. ❤️
I love that you have Alice from Wonderland behind you!❤
The Smiths...bite size nuggets of sorrow. Shoplifters of the World Unite, London, Ask, Golden Lights, Oscillate Wildly, Stretch Out and Wait, the entire Strangeways, Here We Come album...all great Smiths songs.
U wouldn't believe how hard that guitar part is. It took around to play it just right. Johnny Marr is amazing! J
"There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" by The Smiths & "Every Day Is Like Sunday"
Beautiful
A lot of their stuff is really funny too
The lyrics almost always manage to make me smile 😆
There's a light that never goes out
Best Smiths track bar none
You finally did my favorite band!
Yes, The Smith's! Also, check out Morrissey's solo hit, "Every Day Is Like Sunday"! Fantastic song that is halfway between these two songs; it's very melodic and catchy, but also plaintive and kind of brooding. It's one of my favorites of Morrissey's solo works.
Bad recommendation
@@ari8184 well... everybody's tastes are different. I guess. I love that song.
"Why pamper life's complexities when the leather runs smooth on the passenger seat" yes you nailed it ;)
Morrissey is a Northern poet, his lyrics are ridiculous. The first line is
"Punctured bicycle, on a hillside desolate." Beautiful.
You should listen to the version that was included in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" which was by The Dream Academy, who also made "Life In A Northern Town" which is a song that will take you on a 4 minute tour of audal heaven.
The Dream Academy's "Remembrance Days" is one of my top 20 albums.
@@RandomJane104 it was pure sonic joy! I'd say they were maybe 15 years ahead of their time.
Dream Academy's version is actually a really beautiful reinvention of The Smith's song, I really prefer Dream Academy's version by far ... The Smith's original is great too and they wrote the song , so, credits to them of course ...
Long title and short song. Masterpiece. Period !
youre feeling this arnt you ... im down the road from morriseys hood . i would love to see you at a brit pop / mod night . youd love it and its like our version of soul music
Did you say "1994" or "1984" ?
India, I love your face expressions. "Please, please, please" is dearly known for its usage in the famous Matthew Broderick film Ferry Buller's Day Off, during a scene in a museum.
The Poet Laureate that is Morrissey! A genius!
