    On a trip to Norway in December 2018, my wife I were having dinner at a random burger restaurant in downtown Oslo when Einar came in and sat down behind us. We couldn't believe the luck, considering we are big fans of Wardruna and we were listening to them for the entire trip. We also listened to the entire Ragnarok album over and over on a separate trip to Iceland. Driving through the Icelandic landscape with this music playing was a completely surreal experience. Nevertheless, before we left, I was able to talk to him briefly and get a picture together. We couldn't believe the odds of being in that city, at that exact restaurant, at that exact time, for him to sit behind us. Amazing experience.

    How.....how is it possible that I, a swiss with basically zero relation to norway, see this video of a song so beautiful and touching, that i suddenly have something in my eye and got chills all over my body? We must never forget, that music is able to reach places in our hearts and souls, that we never thought it would possible! And that's probably the best thing humans are capable of.....making music!

      @Tarkhun legendary Tur/Turan=Thor. The people of Tur/Thor and their descendents have spread to so many nations from the original Turan (land of Tur/Thor). Many became TURks in Türkiye, many others became Germanics in Western&Northern Europe where many regional names or family names also refer to Tur aka Thor (like Thüringen in Germany). You are one of these descendants. This music resonates with these ancient times. It's sort of a encryption in your dna which is now re-discovered and re-awakened by the music.

    Voluspá is the first and best known poem of the Poetic Edda. It tells the story of the creation of the world and its coming end, related to the audience by a völva addressing Odin. It is one of the most important primary sources for the study of Norse mythology. Henry Adam Bellows proposed a 10th-century dating and authorship by a pagan Icelander with knowledge of Christianity.

    English Translation :
    Silence I beg of all holy races
    higher and lesser, the sons of Heimdallr;
    You want, Valföðr, that I tell well
    old tales about men, the first one I remember.
    The years flowed, there Ymir settled,
    There were neither sand nor sea nor cool waves;
    Neither earth nor sky,
    But a gaping abyss, nowhere grass.
    The sun grows dark, the world sinks into the sea,
    Bright stars disappear from the sky;
    fire and smoke rage,
    the heat plays high with the sky itself.
    Brothers wil fight and kill each other,
    cousins (sisters' sons) will betray their kinship;
    Standing, Yggdrasil's ash shakes,
    the ancient tree groans, a giant becomes loose.
    Now Garm howls greatly before Gnipahellir,
    the rope will break, Freki will run,
    Of wisdom I know much, I see further ahead
    Ragnarok of the gods of victory.
    She sees rise up a second time
    the green earth from the sea.
    Waterfalls fall, the eagle flies above,
    he who on the mountains catches fish.
    She sees a room standing more beautiful than the sun,
    covered in gold in Gimle.
    There the faithful will dwell
    and enjoy pleasures forever.
    Then comes a mighty one into the ruler's seat,
    powerful from above, he who rules over all.

    I found the English translation, for anyone interested:
    Silence I beg of all holy races
    more and less, the sons of Heimdallr;
    You want, Valföðr, that I tell well
    old tales about men, the first one I remember.

    The years flowed, there Ymir settled,
    There were neither sand nor sea nor cool waves;
    Neither earth nor sky,
    But a gaping abyss, nowhere grass.

    The sun grows dark, the world sinks into the sea,
    Bright stars disappear from the sky;
    fire and smoke rage,
    the heat plays high with the sky itself.
    Brothers wil fight and kill each other,
    cousins (sisters' sons) will betray their kinship;
    Standing, Yggdrasil's ash shakes,
    the ancient tree groans, a giant becomes loose.

    Now Garm howls greatly before Gnipahellir,
    the rope will break, Freki will run,
    Of wisdom I know much, I see further ahead
    Ragnarok of the gods of victory.

    She sees rise up a second time
    the green earth from the sea.
    Waterfalls fall, the eagle flies above,
    he who on the mountains catches fish.

    She sees a room standing more beautiful than the sun,
    covered in gold in Gimle.
    There the faithful will dwell
    and enjoy pleasures forever.

    Then comes a mighty one into the ruler's seat,
    powerful from above, he who rules over all.

    This is a wonderful piece of music dedicated to the accounts on Ragnarok! I love the imagery especially, particularly with seeing Freki and Geri running around, alongside the repetitive shots of Nornir spinning the Fates (thread). As we are looking back and forth on the misty fog, we are continually sent back to the Norn and her thread, speaking to the repetitious nature of Ragnarok. Unlike the Christian view of what the 'end' may look like where it is a final -end-, Ragnarok is seen differently. It is a continuous process and simply marks a rebirth; not an end.
    Speaking of Ragnarok, the most telling imagery of this is in the breaking of the tree. We see this through the bark that has been cracked and pushed out, marking a visualisation of Yggdrassil, the ash tree, the world tree. Of course, there are plenty of other smaller indicators, such as the bones and dead trees we can see around the forest, but I think this is the strongest.
    It is interesting to see Einar alone in the woods, which I think is something we should think on as well. Rather than being surrounded by various little things happening at once, the Skald (Einar) is alone in the woods with only his lyre and later Odin's hounds. It's a shame we did not see the raven's Huginn and Muginn, as that could also have made some great imagery. but either way, this is a tremendously well video that really does the sagas justice. As always, his vocal composition of this song truly gives these 1,000 year-old words the justice they deserve. I believe that the single instrument and lone voice really sells it. Voluspa was not composed with an orchestra, but would most likely have been sung by a single of small group of Skalds and instruments. So, by singing it alone, it really gives a historical and almost an 'earthy' feel to it. It makes the song feel just that bit more authentic!
    Well done, Wardruna. As always, you've raised the bar.

      The only thing I might add is that in the credits we can see 3 different wolves were used and are you positive the wolves aren't representing something else from Norse mythology? There are many different things they could represent. This video has been the trickiest one of Einars to fully break down for me

    • @calebback395
      @calebback395 5 лет назад +2

      @@TheCodeMaster191 Hi,
      It's possible, of course, but they may well have used 3 different wolves because of the shots they needed. One could have been a replacement etc. I think the main indicator that it is Freki and Geri is in fact that there is never no more than two wolves. It is the same when depicting Hugin and Munin. For instance, if I were to point towards some songs, such as Corvax Corus' song regarding the two birds, you never see more than two in one shot. Pairs are fairly common within Norse Mythology, and Freki and Geri are probably the more identifiable of one of those. It certainly did take me a few takes to break down the major parts. There are things I've also only just picked up after rewatching, such as the boiling of the water (another attribute of Ragnarok), so it's possible I may have missed a third wolf!

    • @tabiabias
      @tabiabias 5 лет назад +3

      Since Voluspá is the Prophecy of the Seeress, I would say that the elderly woman in the video is not one of the Norns but rather a Volva. Spinning the threads was closely associated with the act of seidr. Also, since Ragnarok is the main theme here, then the wolves are definitely not representing Geri and Freki but rather Skoll and Hati, since the two are destined to swallow the Sun and the Moon at the onset of Ragnarok.

      @@tabiabias To add to this breakdown of the video. Do you think it is drawing parallels between the strings of the Volva and the strings on Einar's instrument? Is it suggesting einar has some control over his own fate or he simply has to play the strings he is dealt while the Volva can create them from scratch completely? Maybe I'm going to far but it goes from the Volva's strings to his own which suggests something
