Genius! SpaceX Dragon to rescue NASA's Hubble Telescope & ISS from falling to Earth...
It's been about 30 years since Nasa astronauts saved the Hubble Space Telescope on an immensely daring mission.
At the time, it was perhaps the most daring mission scientists had conceived of.
In short, Hubble was launched in 1990 with faulty optics that produced blurred images. Fortunately, however, the space telescope, which orbits Earth, was designed to be physically repaired by astronauts.
Fast forward to recent years, the legendary space telescope one more time calls for help.
Genius! SpaceX Dragon to rescue NASA's Hubble Telescope & ISS from falling to Earth...
To be honest, this concerns Nasa so much since unlike before, the agency is now facing major financial trouble.
But, all hope is not lost!
Fortunately, Nasa now has a reliable commercial partner, SpaceX, who promises to save them from rock bottom.
Discuss everything about this in today's episode of Tech Map.
Genius! SpaceX Dragon to rescue NASA's Hubble Telescope & ISS from falling to Earth...

I am 72 and as long as I can remember, NASA has Always had budget problems
Thing is NASA has already accomplished the mission that it was created to do.... beat the Commies to the Moon. Ever since then, it's only purpose has been to set up pork lines.
I'm 80. "All" government and their initiatives have always had budget problems... and "real" spending problems. And that in spite of their taking 3/4ths of my earnings and counterfeiting... and still having to borrow.
This is what it is all about - We needed a vehicle to handle routine maintenance on our equipment. The Spacex vehicle is doing what it is supposed to do.
Tech Map I really think SpaceX is proving my point about Dragon is already doing the job that Starliner was supposed to be doing more then ten years ago.
Yes, your thought is correct
I trust Musk and the SpaceX team. If they say that they can save Hubble with the aid of Isaacman. Think this would be a pivotal part of the public/private cooperative partnership. Nasa shows a need and leverages the innovative abilities of SpaceX/ Musk to find solutions. Isaacman should also be celebrated for offering to use one of his Polaris missions at his expense to save Hubble. Pretty Noble offer. Seen any other folks willing to drop $250 million to aid a space programs?
Yes. They can do this if Nasa need
@@techmap9la NASA no lo necesita...tiene otras prioridades. Que inocentes sois, los latinos somos menos crédulos con las instituciones estatales.
England. Hubble is a symbol of American peace and exploration. Something the world does not have much of these days. Please don't let Hubble die like some old piece of junk. I'm sure there are hundreds of scientists pleading to use it. America has lost the Arecibo radio telescope, one of the finest on earth, due to neglect and poor maintenance.
Save Hubble!
SpaceX will do this if Nasa need
Public outcry is needed.
NASA should have dumped Artemis a decade ago at least.
Boeing is falling apart these days due to major management problems. Many in the aerospace industry doubt they will survive more than a few years.
They don't have a choice. Congress tells them what to buy and controls what money they get to do with it. The main mission of SLS is to keep the pork barrels full of slop. And if NASA has to scuttle the science program to do it... they literally do not care.
Bring her home. When done....no burnup.
If all SpaceX is doing is boosting Hubble into a higher orbit, it sounds like a reasonable approach. SpaceX has to practice docking in orbit anyway, so this sounds like a perfectly good time to do that.
I thought we were just going to boost the orbit for now. Replacing the equipment takes a good 18 months of training with the equipment and needed space suites.
Doesn't SpaceX have new space suits ready to go right now?
Contains old information: first Polaris Dawn scheduled for 2023?
Hubble is needed now more than ever. I am not surprised about spacex coming to the rescue, it does have the best safety record, reliability and adaption possibilities, along with being the cheapest. Oh, and that its the only NASA partnership craft that's available
Nasa denied this 😫
Son's help will be of great service to science!
Well i think this is a great idea.
GO SpaceX!
There are a number of "HARD" points accessible on the 'outside' of Hubble. Bolt several reaction wheel "Quads" (+ dedicated solar panels) to Hubble's exterior. Interfacing control of the 'Quads" should be 'Child's Play" if NASA uses the talents of the engineers and technicians presently being used to keep Hubble alive.
"Starliner will not be ready until April..." of what year? When was this video produced???
Well this video said Polaris Dawn will fly in the 4th quarter of 2023 ....
Starliner will fly 3025
Exactly, badly produced video, AI generated robot voice, as well as AI generated script that no one even looked at before regurgitating this awful video.
Russia's launch ability is degraded to the point they are not launching any new space missions soon.
Makes you wonder if the transport of US astronauts and cargo was the primary source of funding for them.
NASA has 4 copies of the Hubble telescope just sitting there. They are former KH-11 spy satellites and all they have to do to make them operational and usable for looking out at the stars is to replace the mirrors with new ones. They might also replace the computers for faster image processing and maybe update the communications system so that the images come back to Earth faster. The point is, they could do all of that work on the ground and then use a SpaceX bird to put the darn thing in orbit.
Excellent stuff bro
Glad to hear that, thank Claren, my friend
Dragon can easily be fitted with a robotic manipulator arm.
Wrong.
Stupid.
Place Hub on the dark side of the Moon's surface. Then you wouldn't have to worry about 'gyros' or interference with Earth, and relay data via Moon sats.
ket e kerkoj te beni bashke. jo urretje te jeni bashkuar. duke qeshur.
No worries. Uncle Elon will take care of it.
My thoughts go to all the other space junk up there, Stuff broken or maybe repairable . Some thing that adds something useful for several other missions . Like a tug with bays and small versions of the arms on the space station.
Research the Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle from the early 90's
JUST DO IT.
Nasa is concerning about this
Why not get some of these Colleges that use it to pay up and also use the same trip to do some Sicence things they want done to pay fpor it, not to mention also put the X Sats up at the same time!
I think NASA should be the FAA of Outer space managing and overseeing launches.
And Nasa will never launch anything?
Genius nasa/Boeing already saved Hubble.
The upcoming Starship booster could take a space-tug (like the x-37) to orbit and after Hubble repair, travel to the ISS and dock it there for future missions. The current vehicles cannot do the Hubble repair at this time.
I will make research about this for another video. Can you give me more info if you know
What would NASA do if not for SpaceX.
US aerospace industry will be similar Russia's
Dump the SLS and NASA would have the money!
Scriptwriter and Editor haven't been checking the development of SpaceX's own EVA suits.
No one considering putting one of Rocketlabs 'kick' stages in to Dragons trunk to deliver to Hubble, to push it higher? Heck, take a couple up to the ISS and push it higher too.
My questions concerning Hubble: how large are the gyroscopes that need to be replaced? And would one mission be enough to complete the repairs or would there need to be additional flights? What exactly are the necessary requirements to complete the repairs and boost Hubble into a higher orbit? Inquiring minds want to know. 🤔
I suspect that Elon has already begun covert design concepts for a Canada arm adaptation for starship and/or dfagon
Why you think so?
I'm with you. I've been in the hallways of Hubble and NASA and have heard the kinds of conversations that go on. Never say never.
Just so much fanfoy I nearly heaved.
Sounds do-able. There is only one Hubble and it’s already up there. Cheaper than replacing it. And maybe when they bring it home they can take up the one that’s currently hanging in the Smithsonian and let it do the next 30 years!
The Hubble at the Smithsonian is just a mock-up. It is in no way suitable for space. It was dressed up to look like a functioning satellite for museum display purposes only.
Trust Elon.
Yes. Because Elon has SpaceX
Exciting video thank you.
PLEASE !!! elon's crew and isaacman money , redesign &/or extend dragon trunk , and OR send second dragon cargo .apollo/soyuz had an adapter .... too many possibilities to say "caint do it"
How about Starship?
If anyone can do it, SpaceX can! We have the latest tech and tools from SpaceX. Look how far they have come so far. Only limitation is our imagination.
Attach Hubble to the International Space Station.
Can't. They are in different orbit and Hubble is in higher orbit than ISS.
not feasible.
But we have moneys to wage war after war. 😢

For those living under the rock? Like there is only one rock? The saying is "for those living under a rock"

The US has very little if any space program right now without SpaceX. That may change in the next two months or so but even then you have questions of reliability and and sustainability by Blue Origin (and Group) and the BE* engines. Although NASA continues to support development of a "private" space station, SpaceX will launch what is expected to be the worlds first commercial space station in 2025. The new space station, Vast Haven-1, will then be "followed by two spaceflight missions to the new space station". SpaceX says that station will then be connected to a much larger station already under development. If you select a provider other than SpaceX, implementation cost of any program would be many multiple times more than SpaceX. My money is on SpaceX. I believe they will fix the Hubble too, unless an alternative multiple lens system comes along that is better and cheaper. I've seen reports that they could just pickup the Hubble and bring it back in a Starship.
The world of space?
I'd like to meet your proof reader.
"Living under the rock"?? Who wrote this ridiculously poor script?
grab the telescope and bring it to the space station and do walks from the ISS air lock then release
Impossible. The orbits are ttotally different and at different altitudes; the delta v required is too much.
bring it back and repair it
too risky for the telescope. Must fix in orbit.
How? We don't have anything big enough to do it
Bring it back how? It went up in shuttle cargo bay. There's nothing - currently - flying big enough to haul it back to earth in. Any possible repairs would HAVE to be done in orbit.
@@billmullins6833 Elons got that thing he's building. But still, bringing it back would be the end of it.

The ISS is a Spaceship!. Put it in orbit around the moon or MARS!
It is more expensive to do that
Space x? They will never find it. Go team go.
Spending More Tax $$$ on a Dinosaur??? Why? Put the Tax $$ Into Upgrading JWST advanced capabilities OR Build a New One OR Advance the New Super -Scopes in Chile!
Give the hubble to space x.
I suggest building a replacement using the SECOND mirror that was built and ground at the same time as the mirror actually flown in Hubble. This mirror should still be available as it was stored in case of need. The new telescope would lack the defects of Hubble as originally built and can include up to date instrumentation and support systems. It should be possible to launch using Falcon 9 even if "tricked out" with additional capabilities. Hubble as launched weighed about 11.5 tons, Falcon can lift nearly double that to low earth orbit according to SpaceX figures.
Why don’t they ask Boeing to save NASA? Oh they can’t get their rocket off the launch pad
Haha. On Starliner?
There is nothing new here.. rhis is years old info 😢
I thought we were told that The Dragon didn't have enough 'trust' capacity to keep the I.S.S. alive till 2030-36 ?
ISS itself is too aging, no one can save it. out with the old, in with the new. Always is true
Hubble at the end of it's life cycle:(
Spacex don't have an airlock or arm. You think spacex can't duplicate those from 30 years ago or develop new ones that work better. Musk could carryout repairs and boost its orbit in one mission probably be ready before the engineering is complete for the Hubble upgrade
So if we have the far superior James Webb telescope, why do we need to fix Hubble?
It's different technology. Different wavelength detection spectrums. Hubble: Observes primarily in the visible, ultraviolet, and near-infrared spectrum. James Webb: Specializes in observing in the mid-infrared to the far-infrared spectrum, which allows it to study objects and phenomena that emit infrared radiation, such as cool stars, galaxies with high redshifts, and dust-obscured regions where stars and planets form.
why not maneuver Hubble to the ISS so they can service and repair it?
You need fuel to move a satellite.

Space X has save the America tax payers millions in launch costs with superior engineering and hard working dedicated employees. Unlike older pork belly profit centers with cost overrides that cost America Billions over the years and deliver little. Nasa has poorly managed many projects with revolving door management. Good people within the ranks are tying to get things done but it seems management is paid better if it takes longer, or never gets done. WCDB
That's the secret rule of any government - expand or die. So use every excuse to spend more, hire more, tax more and borrow more - but don't actually eliminate the problem. That's what happened to the War on Poverty, War on Crime, War on Terrorism, and so on.
If they can do this, I would love them for. ❤😂. I thought we could drag them over to the moon and use them there. By the time this is done, will end up, moving it all the way out to Uranus. We’ll just keep making news space stations and move them the older ones further out the solar system.
We'r not going to be dragging old space stations anywhere, That's far beyond our capabilties.
@@tomperone9338 I don’t let arbitrary people make comments out here, so unless you can prove that you have a degree in engineering that backs up what you’re saying, I could care less. That’s all I hear out here on the Internet from a bunch of fools that act like they know what they’re talking about. Tell me where you got your degree and engineering at.
For rescuing Hubble, SpaceX could create a stripped-down Dragon capsule, no crew, outfitted with reaction wheels and gyros, and send it to dock permanently with Hubble. Dragon would then be used to boost Hubble as needed, and the reaction wheels and gyros on board the Dragon used to point the Hubble for its picture-taking mission.
Hubble was not designed for "docking" with other spacecraft. Its hardware was not design for robotic servicing either. It took the dexterity of astronauts to fix it the other times. It also required the stability of a very heavy, stable Space Shuttle with a robotic arm to hold it in place to work on it.
Not sure how easy that would be to actually hookup wiring wise (Communication between Dragon's gyros and the Hubble.), but there is some merit to that idea.
@@Kr0N05 I'd think that there really wouldn't be any need to hook up any wiring or direct communications between Dragon and Hubble. Both would be controlled from ground bases. The only "connection" between the two would be the docking of the Dragon to the Hubble. The Dragon would be instructed to do the pointing of the combined craft to the desired target and Hubble would be instructed to take the images and transmit them to the ground.
no they can put replacement gear on a separate rocket and get it orbiting in sync with Hubbles orbit, send a second rocket with people and tools. Nothing would be a better demonstration of our ingenuity than that. The precision required for Hubble to function is contained within the Telescope, as are the algorithms and programming. Attaching a massive object like another capsule would not be practical to how Hubble is designed to work and might actually screw it up. The planning for such a mission might have already been done. If you remember what one crew member said to John Grunsfeld as he was leaving the Hubble the last time, he said "get a good look at it, its gonna be a while before you see it again". Makes me wonder what he meant by that at the time.
Keep it up there and make a hotel.
ISS?
What? It's about the size of truck.
One main solution is space X and the Spaceship.coming soon. Forget the rest!
It was never made to be doc k to though, just attached to the shuttle arm. I think it'd be pretty difficult to put an interface on Dragon to attach to it. Plus it might not be able to have thrust on it.
Why not build a new Hubble Telescope of it in same orbit and deorbit it into atmosphere
Do you have any idea how expensive such a project would be? If they don't have the money to repair Hubble they FOR SURE don't have the money to replace it.
I think that ISS. should be refitted and sent to orbit the moon it would be a lot cheaper than building a new one
The ISS is in orbit around earth at about 250 miles above the surface. The moon is 1000 times further away.
You’d need a rocket powerful enough to get to the ISS and have enough fuel left over to haul something with a mass of just under a million pounds all the way to the moon. That’s more expensive.
Do two things. Put a Ukrainian flag on it. Then, make an announcement that the Hubble has found Gay chickens on Pluto. Money will fall from the heavens.
Excellent satirical point!

Such a feeble understanding of the economics our government makes possible.
“For those living under a rock . . . “. What an insulting comment made by the commentator! Downplaying the James Webb telescope was also very diminutive. Makes the rest of the narrative suspect as to relevance or validity.
I concur. as a lifelong writer/editor, I would never begin a technical article by suggesting that my reader was living "UNDER A ROCK"! Sounds more like the insults you might expect from Marxist rags like MSNBC and CNN.
I think the first thing your reading program needs to learn is how to pronounce "Eee-Veee- A". It is not pronounced like the female name. As to HST, what is needed is an intermediate Docking Module (IDM) carried in the Modified "Trunk." It would alleviate the need for Dragon to dock with HST. Instead, once deployed on orbit the IDM would attach to the aft end of HST. IDM would offer the same steady platform to HST and the repair crew as the Shuttle cargo bay and its RMS offered to HST on repair mission one. IDM would have the support capacity to allow two crewmembers to recharge the LSS on their suits, and provide a "shirtsleeve" environment allowing crew shifts to rest on orbit. You now have a working system to repair HST using a succession of long-duration spacewalks. Having crewmembers translate one at a time from Dragon to the IDM remains something of a sticking point. as it will increase mission risk over a short period, barring one-of-a-kind modifications to the Dragon spacecraft itself. Consideration could be given to launching the heavier Dragon spacecraft and the IDM (Not returnable) to the HST using Falcon Heavy to increase margins on consumables and upmass. Reboost for HST could be provided by a small "IUS" PAM-type solid motor attached to the aft end of the IDM. IDM thrusters would also be used to orient the HST properly prior to IDM jettison and destructive re-entry.
You’re talking to a robot voice.

NASA was given by the DOD several Hubble style satellites for free. NASA could quite easily have adapted these satellites to replace Hubble but they chose not to !!
Very wrong. The mirror for the Nancy Roman telescope is one of the 2 mirrors NASA received from NRO. And the 2 were not “satellites” Just the primary mirrors and some frame members which likely aren’t usable.
“Quite easily”? They still had to design, manufacture, test install the entirety of the telescope from scratch.
Right now the budget is around $6 billion dollars and still is a couple of years from launch.
NASA was given shells.... the meat of the spacecraft still had to be built, including the mirrors.

Fund NASA, not Ukraine.
If the Ukrainians don't stop Putin, then NATO will have to, which will be a LOT more expensive for the United States than helping Ukraine do it.
Moreover, if Putin gets away with conquering Ukraine, it will embolden Xi to try to seize Taiwan. *_That_* war would cause a global economic collapse that would make the Great Depression seem like a cloudburst at a Sunday picnic. If it happens, you won't worry about funding Hubble, because you'll be too distracted by worrying about whether you'll be able to find anything for your children to eat next week.
@ncdave4life Ukraine has healthcare for all. The US is paying for that. Let's have that here. Do you think Russia wants to take that on? No way. Also it's the most corrupt nation in all of Europe.

Why not just deorbit the Hubble and build a replacement to launch on a Falcon Heavy?? A new telescope would be technologically more advanced and may last more than 50 years.
The ground based telescopes being built right now will easily outperform Hubble. When they’re ready in a few years they’ll last not 50 years but forever.
NASA is not going to build another Hubble.
The money isn't there to do it.
This sounds like a robot is narrating this with low bitrate audio.. Why? It's irritating to listen to. Why not just narrate it yourself? Saying things like "twenty-three November", versus like a human "23rd November" etc.. Also the script comes off as if it were AI generated. I keep coming across videos like this, long flowery sentences and with wishy washy focus. Overly long script to explain a subject: I mean why a 17 minute video to go over this subject? Why didn't you pair it down to be more succinct? Referring to future years such as 2023 when it's already 2024 and this video was published in 2024; when the events clearly never happened or are going to happen. Badly placed stock footage that I keep see over and over again in videos like this.. Disappointing, could have been well done, voting down.
Probably AI narrating
Or we could send Musk up to fix it. After all, he's a genius. There's probably not another human being alive on the planet who knows as much about manufacturing, so fixing Hubble should be a snap for him. We could even leave him permanently docked there. Should anything else go wrong, he would be right on top of it, and we wouldn't have to waste fuel for another launch.
