I'm not surprised this figure doesn't have the base albino prime figure inside the magnus armor, i mean, i know the white Optimus is a nod to the original Diaclone figure/g1 toy but i don't remember seeing magnus without his armor in the entire cartoon, let alone the movie
As far as I know, the only media he's actually been the white Optimus in is the Dreamweave comics where he's wounded by Shockwave and his armor crumbles off revealing the Albino Prime underneath.
I'm so happy to see this! Ultra is probably one of the 2 main ss/ legacy transformers im getting soon, another is the armada prime and tbh they both are impressive in every way possible!
The fact that his cab can turn separate from the trailer already makes it a huge plus over Siege and Kingdom Magnus. But that this version is also a true car carrier rather than his predecessors (holding 3 Deluxes and a Core class) also makes him the fanciest, funnest car shelf in my collection.
@nujevad28 no it isnt lmao I love the CW magnus but ss86 is wayy heavier, extremely dense, quite a bit bigger, and WAYYYY more complex. Not to mention CW magnus's terrible posing
So looking forward to this guy, I was impressed with Legacy Motormaster when I got him last month and it looks like I will be just as impressed with Magnus when I get him later next month.
I was on the fence about buying this but your video convinced me to pull the trigger. As a fan since the show started in 1984 I'm amazed at the crazy engineering tricks they can pull off these days. It's one of the cleverest transformations I've seen in a while. The way they hid the entire cab is genius.
The head hanging out on the bottom of the vehicle reminds me of how G1 Jetfire’s head formed a rotating gun turret on the bottom side of the plane mode.
Got him this week. Everything I wanted and more. SO glad I didn't buy those overpriced third-party versions. He's the right size and rock solid, no hollow spaces. I finally have my posable Magnus. Could've done without those white hinges on his chest, should've been colored red. Way to go, Hasbro! He's a winner! 🏆
While I was fine with Kingdom Magnus, seeing this reveal at the sdcc tf panel and in action was really something. Magnus is my all time fave TF, so I was willing to spend extra. Glad to see so far across reviews that he’s turned out great with an insane transformation, great alt mode, and clean robot mode with a humorously morbid play feature. Kingdom Magnus isn’t going to go to waste for me either, as I can just make him permanently the white Prime. Once SS86 Magnus shows up, imma display my Legacy Dion, Kingdom White Prime, and SS86 Magnus as part of a character evolution.
@@nujevad28Part of the reason why I didn't nab this guy. I dig the scale from Siege and yeah. Big heccin boy tho. And okay... I see all they did is re-engineer the cab go fold it in on itself since no Minimus. Pretty neat.
I remember telling myself I'd be okay with just the Classics toy with the Fansproject upgrade armor back when I was just starting in the fandom; but here we are.
These videos are great, the information and also the humor and presentation! I got all the Dinobots and used your videos instead of the pretty useless manual to transform them!
I don't mind the wide shoulders. My gripe is the white on the matrix compartment hinges. They could have separated that from the cab part it's attached to and made it red to blend in.
I have the kingdom version and that's my favorite one. When you take off all of his ultra Magnus parts he becomes white Angel Optimus prime. Love it totally. Love seeing Optimus as An Angel Inside of ultra Magnus totally Epic awesome. Much Love Emgo !!! Love this video my friend Epic awesome. Much love my friend.
Fantastic review, Emogo! I can't wait to get my hands on this guy! I've waited over 40+ years for this!! I think he looks fantastic! The wideness does not bother me in the slightest! So much better than Kingdom cow/chicken hauler Magnus!
I am pretty sad that this new Studio Series 86 Ultra Magnus doesn't have the removable cab turn into a white Optimus Prime figure, at least it's a much better figure than the Siege and Kingdom Ultra Magnus figures, now Hasbro and Takara Tomy, if you're reading this, please work on making a Delta Magnus repaint of this!
It really looks like they took the lessons from the Masterpiece MP-22 Ultra Magnus and managed to improve on it a bit. My biggest complaint about MP-22 has always been the lower bed not being filled out - his calves were chunky enough where they could've had an added flap on each to cover up the thighs. I'm so glad they addressed that with this version. Generally, the transformation is improved overall. Yes, the way he transforms does give him a bit of an overly broad-shouldered look, but as this is not a new MP figure, it's not a dealbreaker by any means. And I'll finally get mine in from BigBadToyStore tomorrow (Saturday 9/23)! Though... FedEx apparently decided to take my Magnus for a little trip. All my past BBTS shipments went from the hub in Osseo, MN in the Twin Cities (after being picked up across the Mississippi River from BBTS HQ in Somerset, WI), down I-94 and then I-90 through Rockford, IL, passing through Chicago to then head down the Indiana Toll Road and Ohio Turnpike (I-80/I-90) to Perrysburg, OH south of Toledo, then on to Romulus, MI and the FedEx hub near Detroit Metro Airport before getting delivered to my Southeast Michigan home. But this package... went through Bloomingtion, IL, down I-74 through Indianapolis and to Independence, KY (south of Cincinnati), then BACK UP I-74 to Indy again for a day, before finally reaching the home stretch this evening. (Yes, that's a long way to go to talk about how my toy shipment had a long way to go.)
I find the MP transformation *much* more fun to actually handle, but the SS version definitely produces the better overall result in either mode. I still love the MP one, though, it's so satisfying to do
I skipped Kingdom Ultra Magnus in hopes of getting a better Earth based version and was not disappointed. Kinda unfortunate that I didn’t do the same with both Ironhide and Ratchet but I still got both their Earthrise and SS86 versions because I wanted the improvement. So, either way, I’m still happy with what I got.
My only issue with this figure is that its oversized to the other figures. I mean its that big and large compare to Optimus Prime and Rodimus Prime. Theres no question about its engineering and its transformation. Im really impressed with that. But in my opinion the right scale of Ultra Magnus will be the Kingdom Figure.
good thing your review popped up when it did because amazon canada just reopened up the preorders for this guy and I was able to get one, perfect timing lol
You ain't kidding about the childhood trauma from that movie. It's been 38 yrs and I'm still trying to process it lol. Watching my favorite characters get murdered as a 6yr old was pretty wild. I appreciate that film so much more as an adult. Can't wait til I get my Magnus. He looks great
That is really cool. I still think though the price of the Commander class is out of line. Maybe Jetfire was worth it because of his size, but nothing since.
Mine is delivering tomorrow. Cannot wait. The transformation seems to be a bit like the MP Ultra Magnus or at least some of the elements look the same.
The photo shot of Magnus looks to be the scene where Galvatron was attacking the ruins of Autobot city, and the pose is from when he took shots at Galvatron while he was in Cyclonus
This may be the best Hasbro offering I've seen in a long time. The typical cost cutting "features" that I can't stand are mostly missing. There are a couple of minor things about the alt mode that I don't love, but nothing is a real deal breaker for me. I would've liked to see the smoke stacks and gas tanks get some silver paint, and maybe some sort of design change to make the rig a little more convincing when taken off the trailer.
My brother and I did a direct comparison between this and MP Magnus and it shows how Takara learns and improves upon the MP every time. Ways he SS beats the MP: -butt flap works and is animation accurate - backpack is more animation accurate - face sculpt more accurate, but MP does have swappable plates - waist can SWIVEL - trailer mode effectively covers up most of his legs and crotch area. MP has his full robot thighs and crotch visible Other than that, SS is effectively a scaled down MP as everyone has noted
Holy smoke. This thing blows me away. A mainline with all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a high priced 3rd party. I was staring at the screen with my jaw agape for the transformation. You just don't see that kind of engineering in chug. I am going to have to get this.
Mine just arrived, and he's great. Definitely best looking animation-look figure. I like his legs a lot better than the Siege/Kingdom version, and no weird truck butt!
Probably the best retail Magnus since Combiner Wars. Siege was cool but not very accurate to the original (granted neither was CW, but was still an all-in-one build). Studio series has had some real home runs lately.
I absolutely can't wait to get mine! I've been waiting YEARS for Hasbro to make a proper Ultra Magnus! I refused to buy any of the previous ones because were all pretty much trash but they FINALLY did it! I ordered from Amazon because the day it went up the Pulse site wasn't working smh. But in hindsight I see I should have gotten him from BBTS since they shipped already smh. Just trying to save on shipping though since I have Prime.
Nice review once again Emgo. Do the missile launchers plug into the front of the trailer mode? It seems like the back of the missile launchers has the same odd non-5mm port pattern as the front of the trailer.
@Riley_Mundt - Rodimus was a shit Prime. He was much better as HotRod. He even went back to it in the O.G. cartoon. Fans might've gotten over Optimus if Magnus had gotten the Matrix, proper.
This figure has a lot of familiar cues, mainly in the transformation, from X-Transbots Commander Stack, without a doubt. I only collect MPs so don't collect mainline but I'm going to make an exception for this figure.
@emgo316 how much do you want to bet that someone is going to make an "upgrade kit" for this that will allow you to combine this with your combiner wars figures?
One thing i would love to see is a orion pax repaint labeled as ultra magnus. Im pretty sure early concept art of him would later become orion befor hasbro chose to use the figure we have now
I might get him someday, it's not a bad Magnus, I will however miss the inner Optimus robot cause it makes me think him and Optimus are like brothers but for the sake of accuracy I see why they went with that choice, also I do like the colors compared to the Kingdom one I have, it's less drab and vibrant colors
That comparison shot with Siege Maggie makes the SS'86 one look like a Magnus from an alternative timeline where the Matrix has chosen him to buffen up. Not that I mind the beefiness personally, I think the figure wears it rather handsomely.
Have you experienced any of the parts getting strain marks from transforming? Ive heard a lot of people have and im hoping to avoid it on mine when i pick him up if i can so if you have any tios on how to avoid it would be great

It's a nod to the G1 toy
the albino prime look is originated from Diaclone series back in Japan, way before the US Cartoon started.
why would he have the albino prime in the first place? SS86 line is all about the movie (which Magnus is basically a robot to truck only)
I'm also not surprised but its mostly because I think they said he wouldnt have Albino when they announced him I think if I'm not mistaken
I can imagine Grimlock: "Why Ultra Magnus taller than me Grimlock?"
Just get a bigge Grimlock figure thats all
The engineering on this figure is insane and he's a CHUG. Hasbro has dumped a lot into their Commander Class and I am grateful for it.
I'm so happy to see this! Ultra is probably one of the 2 main ss/ legacy transformers im getting soon, another is the armada prime and tbh they both are impressive in every way possible!
I wonder, does this Magnus come with a 90 day warranty when you put him back together, like the movie one did?
Cock a doodle do
"Or your money back!!"
That's an engineering marvel. Bravo, Hasbro.
The engineers behind these modern Transformers (MP&Chug) are wizards. 😂
The bug wanted to help with the Review😂
Is it just me? Or is Hasbro getting closer to matching that 3rd party quality with each figure they put out?
With the exception of paint apps, they still seem determined to not do that on most mainline figures (looking at you, RotB Bumblebee).
@@ShinGallondang fam thought you were only on reddit 😮

cool piece. It uses the transformation from Masterpiece UM and improves on it. Wonder why no one has made size comparison with the two of them.
I've seen them compared of TFW2005
There's pictures out there. The masterpiece is still massive aside this
