Making an Eastern Woodlands Bow

- In this video I make a replica of the Eastern Woodlands bow from the Catawba Tribe found on page 78 of the "Encyclopedia of Native American Bows, Arrows & Quivers - Northeast, Southeast, and Midwest" by Steve Allely and Jim Hamm.
The Pre-Columbian Catawba territory consisted mainly of present day North and South Carolina, and they were later considered by early colonists to be one of the most powerful tribes in the Southeast.
It seems that many hunters and warriors throughout the Eastern Woodlands favored a similar type of bow ~ the simple, no fuss bendy-handle bow ranging anywhere from about 45 inches to nearly 6 feet long. Hickory and Black Locust were (and still are) choice bow woods for the design, but Osage was also used.
The style is often referred to as the "Cherokee Bow", although many tribes from the area used it. It's the quintessential hunting tool; everything a bow needs, and nothing it doesn't. Most artifacts from the region are without raised handles, grip wraps, tip wraps, or elaborate decorations. There are always exceptions, of course.
The Eastern Woodlands bow is one of my all-time favorite designs. It's versatile, effective, and relatively simple to make.

I live in E TN, Cherokee country. Just two days ago I spoke with a Cherokee bowyer about this very design. You did absolutely every thing he told me about, and I might add, you did it flawlessly. True to form, history and culture. You are a very talented young man, and I am an old man, but a new subscriber !!!
That’s awesome, and welcome aboard! Glad to have you!
Wow, this is just pure art! A lot of attention to detail and time goes into these beauties. Thank you so much for sharing with us all.
Beautiful bow! That osage orange is striking.
You do good work, Correy. Very admirable! Love the eastern woodlands bow!
I've watched this video before, but just now noticed the picture perfect layer sawn grain on the end of that already awesome Osage stave 👍
It was a really pristine stave!
Hands down my favourite channel, subject matter, everything. After owning a few production bows I am chomping at the bit to come across a primitive bow in the flesh or make my own. Love the content!!
Give it a go! If you don’t succeed the first time, don’t lose hope. Start another and apply what you learned from the process.
@@organicarchery So much truth in that. I have a two year old son and want to pass down trades like archery and bowyership. And with getting my first ever deer not six days ago, woodsmanship and hunting will find their way to him as well. Fingers crossed for the next generation.
The eastern woodlands bows are my favourites among the american bows. I like their long and "simple" design.
Impressive as always.
I very much appreciated & enjoyed this video. Have never made a bow from Osage, or one with a bending handle. Now, I might give it a shot. Looking forward to your next video.
Great content. Love it 👌🏼
Very impressive!

Just discovered your channel randomly, binge watching your videos now😂.
Welcome! More to come, and thanks for watching all of them. Helps the channel out a lot!
Same!
Love the work man. You've got a family off grid in Montana watching. My oldest boy is 5 and we shoot our bows together most days. Someday we'll take these lessons you're teaching and build a couple of bows together! Thank you.
Awesome! Wishing you and your family good luck in your bow building adventures! 👊🏼
This such a relaxing video and so easy to watch and follow. Thank you so much for sharing, can't wait for the next creation. From sunny Scotland.
Awesome man.
Glad you enjoyed it 👊🏼
Thank you so much Cory for sharing your talent and journey with us.
My pleasure!
Beautiful bow! Love the hiss of the arrow in flight!
Satisfying! 🌀🏹
Perfect balance, nice work 💯
🙏🏼👊🏼
Sweet work…elegant in its simplicity, a working tool for sure. Very nice! 👍🏼
Everything a bow needs and nothing it doesn’t 👊🏼
Another great bow. I know it takes talent, but you make look so easy. Doing research must be the key for the bow to resemble what Naive Americans used.
Looks very nice. I´m happy you started your RUclips-chanel. A pleasure to see you at work. :) The second book is very nice, too. (If you haven´t read it jet.) ;)
I have the second book as well! Jim was working on a third covering the west coast when he passed away. Shame it might never see a workbench.
Oh, I didn´t know that. Really a shame. There are so much interesting bows in that region, too.@@organicarchery
Beautiful bow. Osage is an amazing wood. Thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it 🤙🏼
Very entertaining and informative. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you for the support! 😁🙏🏼
@@organicarcherythank you for the absolute top tier content and craftsmanship💪🏽💪🏽
A beautiful bow.
Thank you 🙏🏼
Another great looking bow.🏹 Really hope to carve my own viking bow some day.
its amazing how something so simple can be that elegant!
Simple doesn’t have to mean crude! 🏹🌀
@@organicarcheryI always say the same thing about cooking. A tasty, healthy dish does not have to be complicated.
Satisfying and appreciating to see the amount of detail and workmanship in every step of the process. Amazing work!
Glad you enjoyed it! 🏹
Awesome!
Thank you! 🙏🏼
This is cool stuff, really enjoying the content. 👏🏻💯
Glad you like it!
Nice bow making video!
Thank you!
Its not just about the design, what felt more astonishing that such simplistic design, yet those shots are pinpoint accurate and felt very powerful...
It doesn't take very much osage wood to make a respectable bow!
Beautifully executed as always! Love that you’ve got your channel up and running now so we can see your master craftsmanship at work! Would love to see how you make your trade points those things are wicked 🙌🏾
Thank you and welcome aboard. I’ll do a trade point video in the near future. My next big project is an arrow making masterclass. Everything including the shafts, nocks, fletching, and trade points.
I love watching you work. So methodical, relaxed and smooth, I appreciate watching another craftsman at their trade. Thank you for sharing.
Much appreciated! 🙏🏼
Beautiful Osage.....
Precioso trabajo!!! Felicidades, saludos desde Chile!!!
Enjoying your builds tremendously! The one part you left out of this one was building the string, I thought it was very technical and almost as interesting as the bow itself last time, IMO. Amazing work sir.
I’ll be doing a full string building tutorial in the near future!
Awesome bow brother, beautiful piece
Thanks dude! 👊🏼
Love this series! I ordered the referenced encyclopedia too,
Building a like you do has to be great therapy….just making bowstrings puts me in a good place. I can imagine a bow!
I enjoy making strings as well. Therapeutic work for sure!
I’m from the area on the map. Love this. Great job.
Thank you!
Great video. Just found your RUclips channel. Been following on instagram for a long time. Love your attention to historic accuracy.
Welcome aboard! Thank you 👊🏼
Perfect
another great video I started out hunting traditional many many moons ago my wife has been encouraging me to get back to it and your videos have kindled a fire to begin the search for a new Bow, thank you!! Haha that same fly was in your last video
Awesome! Wishing you the best in your future builds and hunts! That one fly is immortal and has permanent residence 🤣
All said and done, this design has always been my favorite, mostly due to it’s simplicity. I use this fully bending design on high crowned wood/staves like saplings.
Great video man. I’m liking the series
Agreed! It works really well with narrow staves and high crowns.
Glad to see you finally on RUclips Correy. 💪🏼 ive followed your Instagram for years now. The care you put into your work is phenomenal 🏹
Welcome aboard and thank you for the sub! 👊🏼
I have never made a self Bow but I have an Osage stave that is very slim and watching this I think that I will try and make this type from what I have. Thanks for sharing.
It takes very little osage to make a formidable bow.
Handsome bow!
Thank you!
Awesome build! Always wanted to build my own but never knew where to start.
There are many great bow building tutorials on RUclips!
Absolutely STUNNING workmanship! I can't believe how silent it shoots and fast! 🏹 Osage is King and you just made a fantastic bow with it. One that I know without a doubt anyone would be proud to own. 🙌
Thank you very much! Looking forward to giving this one away around the New Year. The drawing for the Otzi bow will happen in a couple weeks!
I'm in the process of making a longbow from osage (my first attempt). Your shop setup is amazing and well thought out. I'm using a draw knife and rolled up towel against my hip and it's kicking my ass. Your videos give me inspiration and lots of hope that I can eventually end up with a bow suitable for hunting whitetail here in east texas.
A vise, shave horse, or StavePress is a big help!
Sweet bow!
That’s awesome! The Catawba tribe from which that bow originated from was from actually in the area I grew up. Wow that’s amazing. Awesome job Young man !!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I really love to work with Osage Orange. It's quite unique wood and how it ages through time.
Ages like a fine wine!
Just happened across your channel and glad I did, I’ve always wanted to try my hand at making a bow. That was fun to watch you build, and it seems to shoot great! New subscriber here. God bless!
Thanks for the sub! Glad to have you!
Awesome builds so far, glad the algorithm put you on my feed so I can subscribe. I’ve got an Osage Black Widow PCH that I love to pieces and have always wanted to do a self bow. I’m over in MO, so not too far from you. Gonna start putting away some spare change each month to make it out to one of your classes.
Until then I’ll keep an eye out for new videos, and I suspect you’ll grow rapidly based upon the quality of your first few videos.
There’s nothing quite like the nostalgic primitive selfbow! I hope to see you in a workshop someday 👊🏼
Great video.
Thank you.
Working on my own project.
Some practice attempts, first, see how I fair...
Always wise to practice before diving into a quality stave!
love this channel. Tq for sharing :) from Malaysia
My pleasure. Thank you for watching!
Bow me, brother! Great work!
Beautiful work, thats my favorite style of bow and nocks. Just someone about a simple bend on the handle bow. Elegant and beautiful. I am currently working on a shagbark hickory bow similar to that one. Its 70 inches long though
Hard to beat a good bendy-handle! Many of my personal bows are long. Seventy inches is a great length. The bow I’ve killed the most deer with is 74” long.
Great !
Beautiful bow brother, another fine peace of craftsmanship. With proper care that should last someone quite awhile. I’m currently working on a Comanche inspired bow using Black locust. Blessings!
The Comanche bow is one of my favorites. I’ll film a build someday in the near future!
Awesome work man. As an Asiatic bow guy and big fan of primitive bows I would love to try one of your bows myself.
With a little luck, maybe you’ll win one of the giveaway bows!
Thats my favorite style bow, bendy handle bow eastern style. Just finished a 64” 48#’s@28 fire hardened shagbark hickory bow with asymmetrical nocks lenape style. I like mine a bit longer being 6’1”. For me 62 and up
Right on! I prefer 62-64 for a mid-length hunting bow, too. More forgiving string angle.
Been building Bows since 2010. While Osage (Bodark) is my favorite, I’ve made bows from quite a few “Bow” woods.
Pecan is another wood I like. Having access to Pecan saplings I’ve made quite a few interesting Sapling Bows bows.
While I prefer harvesting and splitting my own staves when ever possible. I’ve traded for staves/woods from all over North America.
Enjoying watching your content!
Cheers! From Southeast Texas!
There’s no shortage of trees that are suitable for bows! Almost everyone has something in their backyard that will do the trick. Glad to hear you’re experimenting with different species. Happy building 👊🏼
I made a bow like this one this last week from an Osage log I cut in Missouri. Mines a bit rougher and primitive but the same idea and length.
You had a realy nice peace of wood to work with. That can be hard with osage, at least where I'm at. It makes for a cleaner end result but knots and wiggles add character and really toast your skill and techniques
Most of the osage I use has a lot of wiggles and knots. Just happened to have a clean shorter piece for this one.
You sir, is a master of that ancient craft.
Much love from the philippines ❤
Hope i could win one of your crafts!
Thank you! Good luck in the giveaways. I'll be drawing for the Walnut Hatchet Bow soon!
