I grew up in a home full of antiques as both my parents and grandparents were antique dealers. Typically, the hard services (tables etc) were antiques. Upholstered pieces where new or at the least re-upholstered. That's something I've stuck with. While my parents home was "colonial" (think 1960's Ethan Allen) and my grandparents did Victorian, I've found a happy place with traditional shapes in muted colors, "Persian" rugs, and a mix of contemporary and antique art. I made the decision to use a nice white paint on all the trim, moldings, and cabinetry. My husband has built a lot of cabinetry from my designs, plus we've added baseboard, crown, door and window trim. This house had only builder basic baseboard, when we bought it. Going too far into a Colonial or Modern colonial would'n't fit this house (Colorado), but I think it's coming along nicely. It's fun to see more traditional styles coming back around and warmer colors again!!
@@DNAConsultingDetectives It's beautiful. These days, even the "simple" style is expensive, but great deals can be found by bargain hunters especially at estate sales. It beats the pants off of that boring, faux farmhouse look with the gray and white (YUCK) look! Give me a real farmhouse any day.
I have a small Cape Cod style home built in the ‘70s with cheap materials and low ceilings. We did a gut reno in 1990s that added wood floors, painted woodwork, low Colonial and Shaker style elements. iIn New England, this never went out of style. I have to say, though, small kitchens and bathrooms are design challenges. Most often renovations start with “knock out a wall,” or, “borrow” space from this room or that closet. I would love to look at creative solutions that work with the small, quirky spaces we have.
My mother's style was Colonial and my Grandmother's was English Country. And visiting Europe when I was 19 and seeing Ireland and Scotland and England, France, Germany and Italy, the architecture and the homes all made their mark on my young heart. I began collecting in my 20s and never gave up my dream, even though all throughout the 90s and 2000's I was "out of style". People practically paid you to take their antique furniture in the 80s and 90's. Now decor has come full circle and we are back to basics and comforting cozy traditional style. I couldn't be happier!

@@Julia29853 Agree…and sometimes I think that people don’t actually think for themselves but jump on any bandwagon that’s deemed current at the moment. That’s when you can definitely put an expiration date on their “new improved, modern” decor. In a few years all this painted furniture will be like ‘70’s macrame owls, ‘80’s wallpaper, and teal carpet. Better to invest in quality classics and then enjoy them for a lifetime. Lol…some people might totally gag over that but I guess I worship at the alter of words like “patina,” “acquired look,” “chinoiserie,” etc.

Yes, I agree!!! Sick of this "open concept" approach to interior design! I certainly don't care for small, chopped up rooms, however I like the coziness and intimacy that smaller scale rooms provide and their individual personalities we can create within them, so long as the styles and color pallets blend and harmonize with one another. If people want an "open concept" to live in, why don't they just build themselves a barn?!?
I am glad to see Early American/Colonial style is finally coming back; in fact I had been thinking it had to be back soon since every other type of style has been trending for so long. I love the simple styling too.

One can never go wrong sticking with a "classic" style of Colonial architecture or décor. It's timeless and never goes out of style. I've always avoided trends, which can get expensive with having to redecorate with the very latest style "rage"! The Colonial looks is warm, inviting and classy. My favorites are Georgian & Federal, since I'm somewhat of a more formal guy. Also pleased that this love affair with gray is finally becoming passe! I added chair rail to my dining room maybe 3 years ago & my sister in law told me. “It’s out of style & dates my house”. I believe this is a classic style which really never goes out of style. I own a 1934 Colonial Ranch and I absolutely LOVE IT! 18th Century French Rococo is exploding in my interior design scheme throughout my home. Like walking back in time! Even got my black and silver 6 burner gas Elmira stove

I decorate in the cozier, primitive-colonial lane. Thanks for the video! Either lane of colonial style is timeless, so it’s actually one of the smartest ways to decorate; investing in and building an authentic collection that won’t need to be replaced, because its not trendy and never looks outdated-just classic.
I have to giggle a little at, “new colonial” style. This is American history, and has stayed the course for all these years, 247 as of this past 4th of July. Most homes in the Eastern part of the US and into the Midwest and South, enjoy this historic architecture, from Georgian grand to Saltbox simple, with variations based on weather (Florida). I have decorated this way throughout my married life, collecting the furnishings that define this gracious style. Mount Vernon, Williamsburg, Monticello, and other historic locations are national treasures. This style is not appreciated as one moves west, toward California. I recently met a designer who moved from west to east, to our city in NC. She complained about the colonial style of the homes here. She was frustrated by her recent clients rejection of her very modern suggestions. I had to share the historic nature of Colonial with her. Her comment was, “Nobody in the rest of the country is doing this.” This style of architecture and design will endure because it represents the history of our Independence. It is very American, always beautiful and very gracious. Thank you for talking about this, Lisa.
In California, there is Spanish/Mexican colonial architecture, so we don’t necessarily “need” English colonial. It’s part of the heritage of the Southwest, in some places since the late 1500’s. The history is not as known in the rest of the US (for example, vineyards/grapes and cattle/sheep ranching were brought from Mexico, as well as the architecture.) We are just as proud of it as Easterners are of their architecture.
Husband took me to Mt Vernon. The house was huge! The grounds were spectacular! The porches were to die for! The rooms were small & some of the colors were... interesting. Definitely worth a visit ❤
You mean the crazy green dining room? During Washington's time that specific color was extremely expensive. So it wasn't an aesthetic choice as much as it was a flex on his guests.

When we moved into our new build (with 3 young kids) 4 years ago I said, “I can see everyone! I can hear everyone!” And I loved our open layout. Now my kids are older and I say,” I can see everyone! I can hear everyone!” And I see the advantage to having a house with rooms rather than a living room, dining room, kitchen combo.

I begrudgingly bought a colonial style in Canada. I have since grown to appreciate the ornate from the door trim, the shutters, and columns. It is red brick, I have a black door, and am going to paint the shutters black. I'm really enjoying playing up the style now. I've thrown in a couple of modern acce to just to keep it a little current.
These are timeless styles. Symmetry is key, esp for Georgian style. People think mid70s bicentennial kitsch but it’s so much more. Federal & Georgian can blend fairly seamlessly. Embrace moulding and trim!
As a life long New Englander whose family goes back to the 1630's in Massachusetts and into Maine early 1700's, I love the Colonial, and the Cape Cod, and of course the Salt Box! Thank you!!!
Have always loved the colonial decor. Lived in the Northeast for years some of the time in a cape cod and absolutely loved both the simple look and the Georgian. So glad to hear this coming back.
I can't pick a lane so I do both. More formal in my dining room, husbands study/office/foyer/main bedroom. Our family room, kitchen and guest bedrooms more English/French country. We bought out Cape Code last October and have renovated it. Painted the exterior brick White Dove with functional raised panel shutters in Tricorn Black with shutter dogs. Just love the classic look. I've never been a trendy person. I love classic homes, cars and clothes.
This is a fantastic video. I grew up not far from Williamsburg, VA, in a typical colonial style home with colonial blue. In my younger years, I wanted a style as far removed from Colonial as possible. Now that I'm older, I find myself loving it more and more. Thanks for doing this video and showing what a lot of homes on the east coast look like!
My wife and I have been slowly working on this style in our house since our marriage 18 years ago. It's been challenging for us because we live in a suburb of Fort Worth, Texas, and the stores that carry the right merchandise are more to the eastern part of the country. And many times, the style has been modernized. So finding quality, traditional, Colonial Williamsburg type, pieces is quite a scavenger hunt. And because it's now such a niche market, it can really drive up the price. But it's doable; it's just more work and more money than one might initially expect.
Lol I used to live near Williamsburg VA. Now in this season I’m in Fort Worth. Any ideas or store recommendations would be appreciated. Wish Lisa would make a video on suburban architecture, as well, and how to maximize it.
As a girl from Richmond, Va., thanks for recording this video. Not so sure the elements of the new traditional trend are different from the already historical styles. But it is my style with a twist of freshness and added art and accessories! As always, people who love interior design and their homes are really NEVER done decorating. LOL
I'm also in Virginia and my house is colonial (like everyone else's). Great video, but I must agree, I don't see anything different in the "new" colonial from the "old." Around here, it's always in style because it's classic.
I grew up with the colonial style. I love it. It's timeless, tasteful and just so homey and cozy. Thank goodness this is back. Such a relief from the harsh lines of modern furniture. My own home is a mixture of low and high county. I've always loved it and always will! It's just the best ever!!!!!
The old houses in Massachusetts get this style very well. Most of the woods and panelling are wood stained with a natural wood color. But the grand houses you'll find panelling in gray or the same blue that we see in the video.
Thanks for the history of housing, Lisa. I teach Interior Design at the high school level and I always talk about history of housing. It predicates how you decorate your home. Personally I am so happy this is coming back. I'm really tired of the beach or farmhouse look.
I'm in Miami and live in a neighborhood with Key West Colonial type houses. My house is only 1,500 sq ft and I'd love something larger, but I can't part ways with my adorable house. Realtors have come over and told us, "Don't sell this house!" We still have separate kitchen and pantry rooms, while every other house in Miami seems to be open concept. I love the coziness, the colors we've picked, the painted trim.
I grew up in the 60s in a very "colonial" style house -- in other words, Ethan Alan everywhere down to the portrait of a revolutionary colonelon the wall above the dry-sink. Grabbing a coffee because this oughta be good!
Was bound to happen…what goes around comes around…the beauty of vintage, solid, classically styled, gorgeously visual structures will always be appreciated by those who understand US architectural history. I knew keeping my cherry Queen Anne furniture was a good thing..could never ever replace it these days, cuz, you know - $$$$$!!!
Thank you for this video! This is my house-Georgian red brick. I leaned into the formal design elements. I think this particular style has always been outside of trends and therefore dates better.
Love Colonial architecture, especially Georgian, which works well with a Grand Millennial interior as well as the new Colonial interior. Just love the New Colonial look.
This is my style and has been since farmhouse. I love “primitive” colonial. Colors that work are black, brown and white with shades of these throughout. Makes the holiday colors pop ❤
I love my 1800 sq foot traditional Georgian colonial, and Lisa your advice is perfect as alway. A colonial can be so flexible, and I lean towards simplicity, as in the Shaker style decor. Shaker style decor is I think one of the unique American treasures since it combines both the traditional colonial ,but also the uniquely elegant Shaker simplicity. Shaker is a style that looks modern, because it is so simple. But it also uses so much wood so it looks warm, while still being simple and modern. I live in Connecticut, and I am always surprised at how Shaker decor is not known in other parts of America. Shaker kitchen cabinet doors are popular around the country. But there are many other Shaker decor pieces that are not as well known, that are absolute treasures, because they look simple. . That Shaker classic hymn also applies to Shaker decor..."Tis a gift to be simple, tis a gift to be free..." .
I agree that there is a casual and a formal lean to this new traditional style-however, I feel like another approach I see people doing is mixing traditional formal w traditional casual for an eclectic “collected over time” feel…as if you inherited the country manor furniture and moved them into the cottage.
This is a great style for people that want to live sustainably and have a beautiful home, even on a limited budget. There are a great deal of furniture and accessory pieces in this style at garage sales, thrift stores, estate salesand auctions.
I love the Colonial style. I have a simple straight ranch home. sided it in storm gray with board and baton shutters. Painted my deck red. Brought in wood beams to the living room with plaid Chippindale sofa and wing backed chairs, soft yellow tones with golden accents pillows, Put a stone gray in the kitchen and dining area with colonial furniture, and the list goes on and on. timeless. My kids thought I was crazy but they love it now. Hit up the auction houses and antique centers for oil paintings and blue and white pottery. Loved this vlog!!

I love this kind of period content! I searched high and low in my area for a georgian and finally found a fixer upper (it was all modern inside), and is a challenge to design so it doesn't feel "museum"
The white and black remind me of the father of the Bride movie. I loved how that house looked inside and out and the street. It really was the ideal suburban house

This is my style-English Country in particular. I’m an avid thrifter and most of my furniture is vintage/secondhand, so I’m easily able to achieve this look. I also like mixing design styles by going very traditional for the majority of my interior-but using more contemporary/modern artwork.
Not typically into this style, but I love that green room at 3:39! (Unsurprisingly, haha.) I feel like this is something I’d love and appreciate in someone else’s home, but maybe something I wouldn’t integrate into my own space. I have to smile...my home decor, chosen over 40 years ago...front rooms, formal, kitchen and family room less formal. Always comfortable and inviting. Never out of style, colonial decor. And, I've never tired of it!
Excellent because the colonial ranch I bought this summer I have decorated in English country style. I love the fact that a middle-aged mom from Kentucky was ahead of the curve.
I really like this new design lean in homes. I really like to take old furnishings old furniture and give it new life and keep it out of landfills. I feel like this new idea of letting paint lead the way, letting wood lead the way, is really a fabulous reduce reuse recycle mentality. It makes a lot of sense to me because we did the swedish design clean modern coming out of COVID we all wanted to feel a little more sleek new and colonial is the most paired down, clean look, in American design history. I like the earthly feel to it all! Thank you for all you(and your team) do! Love being educated!!!

I’ve always been a huge fan of Federal style (i.e. “colonial”) buildings, and live in a very colonial style house. It’s so convincing that visitors think it’s from the early 1800s, even though it was built in the early 2000s (giving us the bonus of modern day systems). Regardless of the trends, I will always love colonial style and a more traditional decor to go along with it - with small touches of modern to make it interesting and less precious. My decor decisions were guided by the rooms in Colonial Williamsburg. I had NO IDEA that I was being trendy, I just know what I like! 😊
I had no idea that colonial remains the most common home style in the U.S. They also had small windows to retain heat or cool, depending upon the season. People were somewhat smaller and the rooms stayed smaller to fit the folks and retain whatever heat from the fireplace or wood-burning stove was meant to accommodate that room. Gorgeous examples of the architecture types and the rooms that were built using less glass and shorter spans of wooden support. I like the painted moldings. I adored the room with the burgundy chaise longue on the bedroom inside wall near the fireplace, which looked comfortable for sleeping if someone who shared that bedroom was ill and needed to rest nearer the fire and building warmth. I am loving the soft colors, which make a color statement but embrace so much else around them in the room. So helpful.

I’ve been renovating and restoring some old homes in the last couple of years and I just purchase a big colonial home that I’m planing to move in to it from my restored Victorian, and watching this video I know I made all the right design choices. I added chair rail to my dining room maybe 3 years ago & my sister in law told me. “It’s out of style & dates my house”. I believe this is a classic style which really never goes out of style. Either lane of colonial style is timeless, so it’s actually one of the smartest ways to decorate; investing in and building an authentic collection that won’t need to be replaced, because its not trendy and never looks outdated-just classic.
I have to giggle a little at, “new colonial” style. This is American history, and has stayed the course for all these years, 247 as of this past 4th of July. Most homes in the Eastern part of the US and into the Midwest and South, enjoy this historic architecture, from Georgian grand to Saltbox simple, with variations based on weather (Florida). I have decorated this way throughout my married life, collecting the furnishings that define this gracious style. Mount Vernon, Williamsburg, Monticello, and other historic locations are national treasures. This style is not appreciated as one moves west, toward California. I recently met a designer who moved from west to east, to our city in NC. She complained about the colonial style of the homes here. She was frustrated by her recent clients rejection of her very modern suggestions. I had to share the historic nature of Colonial with her. Her comment was, “Nobody in the rest of the country is doing this.” This style of architecture and design will endure because it represents the history of our Independence. It is very American, always beautiful and very gracious. Thank you for talking about this, Lisa.

In California, there is Spanish/Mexican colonial architecture, so we don’t necessarily “need” English colonial. It’s part of the heritage of the Southwest, in some places since the late 1500’s. The history is not as known in the rest of the US (for example, vineyards/grapes and cattle/sheep ranching were brought from Mexico, as well as the architecture.) We are just as proud of it as Easterners are of their architecture.

Husband took me to Mt Vernon. The house was huge! The grounds were spectacular! The porches were to die for! The rooms were small & some of the colors were... interesting. Definitely worth a visit ❤
You mean the crazy green dining room? During Washington's time that specific color was extremely expensive. So it wasn't an aesthetic choice as much as it was a flex on his guests.

Big fan of this timeless, forgiving, easy to pull off style. It can be achieved at so many price points from new reproduction to antiques to consignment finds. Benjamin Moore has a selection of Williamsburg colors, very appealing.

I recently purchased a beautiful and truly elegant 1945 Colonial Revival Home. It is my first and forever Home. I thoroughly appreciate the aesthetic for its classic Americana, symmetry, and timelessness. So glad to have come across this video. 🖤
When we moved into our new build (with 3 young kids) 4 years ago I said, “I can see everyone! I can hear everyone!” And I loved our open layout. Now my kids are older and I say,” I can see everyone! I can hear everyone!” And I see the advantage to having a house with rooms rather than a living room, dining room, kitchen combo.

I begrudgingly bought a colonial style in Canada. I have since grown to appreciate the ornate from the door trim, the shutters, and columns. It is red brick, I have a black door, and am going to paint the shutters black. I'm really enjoying playing up the style now. I've thrown in a couple of modern acce to just to keep it a little current.
These are timeless styles. Symmetry is key, esp for Georgian style. People think mid70s bicentennial kitsch but it’s so much more. Federal & Georgian can blend fairly seamlessly. Embrace moulding and trim!
As a life long New Englander whose family goes back to the 1630's in Massachusetts and into Maine early 1700's, I love the Colonial, and the Cape Cod, and of course the Salt Box! Thank you!!!
Have always loved the colonial decor. Lived in the Northeast for years some of the time in a cape cod and absolutely loved both the simple look and the Georgian. So glad to hear this coming back.

I can't pick a lane so I do both. More formal in my dining room, husbands study/office/foyer/main bedroom. Our family room, kitchen and guest bedrooms more English/French country. We bought out Cape Code last October and have renovated it. Painted the exterior brick White Dove with functional raised panel shutters in Tricorn Black with shutter dogs. Just love the classic look. I've never been a trendy person. I love classic homes, cars and clothes.
This is a fantastic video. I grew up not far from Williamsburg, VA, in a typical colonial style home with colonial blue. In my younger years, I wanted a style as far removed from Colonial as possible. Now that I'm older, I find myself loving it more and more. Thanks for doing this video and showing what a lot of homes on the east coast look like!

My wife and I have been slowly working on this style in our house since our marriage 18 years ago. It's been challenging for us because we live in a suburb of Fort Worth, Texas, and the stores that carry the right merchandise are more to the eastern part of the country. And many times, the style has been modernized. So finding quality, traditional, Colonial Williamsburg type, pieces is quite a scavenger hunt. And because it's now such a niche market, it can really drive up the price. But it's doable; it's just more work and more money than one might initially expect.

I grew up with the colonial style. I love it. It's timeless, tasteful and just so homey and cozy. Thank goodness this is back. Such a relief from the harsh lines of modern furniture. My own home is a mixture of low and high county. I've always loved it and always will! It's just the best ever!!!!!

The old houses in Massachusetts get this style very well.
Most of the woods and panelling are wood stained with a natural wood color. But the grand houses you'll find panelling in gray or the same blue that we see in the video.
Thanks for the history of housing, Lisa. I teach Interior Design at the high school level and I always talk about history of housing. It predicates how you decorate your home. Personally I am so happy this is coming back. I'm really tired of the beach or farmhouse look.

I'm in Miami and live in a neighborhood with Key West Colonial type houses. My house is only 1,500 sq ft and I'd love something larger, but I can't part ways with my adorable house. Realtors have come over and told us, "Don't sell this house!" We still have separate kitchen and pantry rooms, while every other house in Miami seems to be open concept. I love the coziness, the colors we've picked, the painted trim.

This is my style and has been since farmhouse. I love “primitive” colonial. Colors that work are black, brown and white with shades of these throughout. Makes the holiday colors pop ❤

I love my 1800 sq foot traditional Georgian colonial, and Lisa your advice is perfect as alway. A colonial can be so flexible, and I lean towards simplicity, as in the Shaker style decor. Shaker style decor is I think one of the unique American treasures since it combines both the traditional colonial ,but also the uniquely elegant Shaker simplicity. Shaker is a style that looks modern, because it is so simple. But it also uses so much wood so it looks warm, while still being simple and modern. I live in Connecticut, and I am always surprised at how Shaker decor is not known in other parts of America. Shaker kitchen cabinet doors are popular around the country. But there are many other Shaker decor pieces that are not as well known, that are absolute treasures, because they look simple. . That Shaker classic hymn also applies to Shaker decor..."Tis a gift to be simple, tis a gift to be free..." .
Shaker has always been a "thing" here in the Midwest.

I agree that there is a casual and a formal lean to this new traditional style-however, I feel like another approach I see people doing is mixing traditional formal w traditional casual for an eclectic “collected over time” feel…as if you inherited the country manor furniture and moved them into the cottage.

This is a great style for people that want to live sustainably and have a beautiful home, even on a limited budget. There are a great deal of furniture and accessory pieces in this style at garage sales, thrift stores, estate salesand auctions.
I love the Colonial style. I have a simple straight ranch home. sided it in storm gray with board and baton shutters. Painted my deck red. Brought in wood beams to the living room with plaid Chippindale sofa and wing backed chairs, soft yellow tones with golden accents pillows, Put a stone gray in the kitchen and dining area with colonial furniture, and the list goes on and on. timeless. My kids thought I was crazy but they love it now. Hit up the auction houses and antique centers for oil paintings and blue and white pottery. Loved this vlog!!

I love this kind of period content! I searched high and low in my area for a georgian and finally found a fixer upper (it was all modern inside), and is a challenge to design so it doesn't feel "museum"

This is my style-English Country in particular. I’m an avid thrifter and most of my furniture is vintage/secondhand, so I’m easily able to achieve this look. I also like mixing design styles by going very traditional for the majority of my interior-but using more contemporary/modern artwork.

I really like this new design lean in homes. I really like to take old furnishings old furniture and give it new life and keep it out of landfills. I feel like this new idea of letting paint lead the way, letting wood lead the way, is really a fabulous reduce reuse recycle mentality. It makes a lot of sense to me because we did the swedish design clean modern coming out of COVID we all wanted to feel a little more sleek new and colonial is the most paired down, clean look, in American design history.
I like the earthly feel to it all!

LOVE Colonial!!!
I’ve always been a huge fan of Federal style (i.e. “colonial”) buildings, and live in a very colonial style house. It’s so convincing that visitors think it’s from the early 1800s, even though it was built in the early 2000s (giving us the bonus of modern day systems). Regardless of the trends, I will always love colonial style and a more traditional decor to go along with it - with small touches of modern to make it interesting and less precious. My decor decisions were guided by the rooms in Colonial Williamsburg. I had NO IDEA that I was being trendy, I just know what I like! 😊
I had no idea that colonial remains the most common home style in the U.S. They also had small windows to retain heat or cool, depending upon the season. People were somewhat smaller and the rooms stayed smaller to fit the folks and retain whatever heat from the fireplace or wood-burning stove was meant to accommodate that room. Gorgeous examples of the architecture types and the rooms that were built using less glass and shorter spans of wooden support. I like the painted moldings. I adored the room with the burgundy chaise longue on the bedroom inside wall near the fireplace, which looked comfortable for sleeping if someone who shared that bedroom was ill and needed to rest nearer the fire and building warmth. I am loving the soft colors, which make a color statement but embrace so much else around them in the room. So helpful.

I’ve been renovating and restoring some old homes in the last couple of years and I just purchase a big colonial home that I’m planing to move in to it from my restored Victorian, and watching this video I know I made all the right design choices.
