As a teacher and a parent, I belive 90% of the misunderstandings and conflict seem to come from prospective. It's not that the teacher is lying or the student is lying (though that does happen from time to time) but that we all see things through a different lens. Most of the time when I have a parent contact me upset, her child has told her the truth as they saw it, but was missing crucial details and when that is cleared up, we are good. Same thing for me as a parent. When my kid comes home telling me craziness, he is not lieing, but he is missing important facts.

As a parent of a kid with autism and an IEP I’d love to hear about educators perspectives on IEPs and 504s. My wife and I are really good about communicating with our child’s teachers but sometimes I worry they feel flustered with the extra questions and work that come with it.

I have a 504 as I was diagnosed with Crohn’s, and IBD when I was eight. Most teachers comply and make accommodations for the student. However, i had one teacher ignore it.
One of my accommodations is that I need nutrition during class, permitting me to eat snacks during instruction. I was in fourth grade, probably about 9 or 10 at the time. I was eating a banana, not even a junk snack. she singled me out And said, “and Kirstin can answer this question once she finishes her banana.” I was mid-bite, and obviously didn’t raise my hand to answer the question. I hurried up to chew and answer the question. I was so embarrassed… I was a really good student and it wasn’t even a noisy or unhealthy snack. My mom told me I was such a people pleaser, that I never said no to anyone until I was 10. When I came home, I ended up crying to my mom because I didn’t mean to upset my teacher. She ended up reporting the incident to the principal, and the teacher owed me a personal apology.
I wish every teacher really respected the 504, but as you progress into middle school and high school, when every one else is getting 504s for mental illnesses, teachers tend to take it less seriously…

I don’t consider students with IEP’s or 504’s to cause extra work for me as a general teacher. They help me better understand my students and give me a guide to help them. I figure this out for every student because they all need different things but it can take more time to tailor learning. Questions show involvement and that makes a teacher’s heart happy!

As someone who had a 504 in middle school and an IEP in high school, My private middle school treated me like shiet lmao, my teacher cornered me and screamed in my face once for “not listening” to her, in high school I had teacher who would blatantly ignore my IEP because I didnt “Look like I needed it”, Im on the spectrum & have a learning disability, but I can pass for Neurotypical on my good days, It took the fact my dad was a Sp.Ed teacher at my high school for most teachers to give me what i needed to succeed (most more time on homework & reports plus the ability to move to a quieter room to do tests & class work) & even attempt to believe I had problems 🤷🏻 In the end I graduated with a low GPA & multiple teachers complaining that I was a “bad student who never did anything I was told on time”

I think most people will be politically correct about this as we deemed anything negative in the school is not something to say out loud. There is a euphemism for everything. For example a disobedient/insubordinate child will be labeled as , strong willed, opinionated, independent, lacking communication skills. Rarely anyone tells the truth because parents get mad over EVERYTHING and our country is very litigation heavy. Even the previous poster before me said she needs to find how to cater/help the kid. That is more work. You can’t put it any other way. So this is called differentiation. Teachers have to teach a lesson but some of the students are GATE/Gifted and need to be challenged, most of the typical students have short attention spans and different learning modalities, then students with IEP/504 have learning disabilities or have harder
access to the curriculum. They may need one on one intervention or the lessons need to be broken up into parts or the expectations are changed (eg do only half or write only 1 paragraph or do an audio/video recording of your opinion instead of writing it all out). So it IS more work, but teachers with good hearts know it comes with the job and we all just try our best to help every student.

You've all made excellent points, but I just want to commend Bri for saying and accepting that kids will eat when they're hungry. I was forced to eat, emotionally abused over it, and also comforted with more food. I'm in my thirties and I'm still dealing with the repercussions. Food is there to satisfy hunger and if there's no more hunger, the eating should stop. And I say that as an adult who doesn't really recognize hunger or lack thereof anymore. I only feel for sure that I'm not hungry when I feel nauseous from overeating. I have to stop before I feel satisfied in any way and coach myself through waiting for what I perceive as hunger to pass. Don't kill the feelings of hunger and fullness in kids!

It is so unique that teaching requires so much unpaid, after hours prep. That is the thing I don’t think people understand. There’s a pressure every day to not only bring your materials and get to work, but to perform and present and bring insight to those materials while also managing the physical and emotional activity of dozens of little crazy people. It’s a big anxiety to think you can’t just come in late or go home early or take a breather. The kids come regardless of whether or not you’re ready! And it all reflects directly on your abilities and yet the outcome is always beyond your control.

I cannot stress the amount of ridiculous excuses and requests I heard from parents to teachers regarding THEIR children being late or absent from school. It was so hard to keep a straight face. One parent in particular wanted the teacher to search the students backpack for excuse notes and blamed the teacher for not having the time to do that. The student was elementary age. I guess being a responsible parent or and the idea of teaching personal responsibility was too much for this parent to comprehend.

I got a letter recently threatened legal action against me for my kindergartners absences.. she was out twice this year for covid (first time bc brother had it so she couldn’t go second bc she got it and dad and I got it) both had notes. Every other time she got sick she had written notes from me or drs notes (mainly dr notes). When I got the letter I was so confused bc I had sent the letters and I was pretty certain the office got them. The secretary in charge of attendance wasn’t inputting them as she got them! She was months behind. Now I get they have other stuff to do, but it seems to me it would be easier to put notes in as you got them..not to stockpile them for months. I spoke to the school and the specific person on multiple occasions and all I ever got was she was ‘behind’ and ‘working on it’. Same story up until the last 2 weeks of school. I have no clue if it has gotten done. I think it’s ridiculous that the school’s policy here is they have 5 days after the absence to turn in notes but they can go months without putting them in the system.
It’s not always the kid not turning in notes, sometimes it’s the employees not doing their job

One of the older boys ( aged 11) said that he had no homework, although a girl in his class who also came to the centre had a load of stuff to do. He was exempt, apparently! It was also an uphill battle for my colleague to get him to do one piece of homework at the start of the year. In the end, he realised it was better to get his work done and be able to spend time doing fun stuff with his parents rather than homework once they picked him up!

When we get a moderate amount of snow, the main roads will be cleared over night, but the back roads will not be attended to. So when school gets canceled because of a seemingly light snow, the parents in the suburbs will complain that they canceled for no reason, and will not listen to the fact that about 70% of the students live in backwoods areas where it would be dangerous for the busses to try to go get them. It happens every year and it's always so annoying

What is what some of these parents? When I was a kid my mom never called a teacher or admin to complain. She would straight up come at me asking why I wasn’t doing what I needed to do. I was the type of kid that school came easy, so I would procrastinate things until the last minute. When I waited until two days before a ten page research paper was due for history she actually told the teacher she understood if he had to be a “tough” grader because I threw the paper together so fast. I’ve never seen a parent so pissed at a 98 percent. Makes me laugh as a parent now. I’m the parent of a special needs child, he has nonverbal autism. His teacher was an absolute angel during quarantine. She would drop off bags of his favorite snacks and activities at our door on a weekly basis. When September came and it was clear they weren’t going to bring all the kids back to school, all the special education teachers in the district stood up and said they would teach their kids. For the entire first semester it was just the special needs classrooms that went to school. It was amazing what they did, they knew how hard it was on the kids and parents not having school and the routine they needed, and they stepped up. I don’t see how anyone could complain about that. They risked themselves because their kids weren’t able to learn virtually. My son’s teacher was there for me in quarantine when I would be in tears trying to manage my 8 year old melting down all day long because he didn’t understand why his rigid routine was suddenly different. Teachers are amazing and they deserve way more money than they get.

As a former student (I graduated) who has high functioning autism I didn’t have a lot of friends and the ones I had were NOT in my classes. That being said, I was more attentive and looked at what was going on around me so I understand how hard it is for teachers with crappy students that wouldn’t listen or would be on their phones and vice versa. It sucks so hard.
When I was in school, college and high school mostly, I would email teachers and leave it until the next morning to look at it again. Only if I was unable to see the teacher in class. If I saw the reply when I looked at it again I would look and reply if needed. If not I would look again in the afternoon. If not then, I would wait until class. It was usually never super important.
One time it was super important though. I had a psychology teacher at the community college who used to work with at risk youth and those with disabilities and understood that sometimes it was just impossible for my brain to do work on time or I got so overwhelmed by the way I mismanaged my time due to time blindness caused by my ADHD and my autism. I see a date but unless I actively count down the days I usually don’t realize how long I actually have left on an assignment until like it’s the day or night before lol. I emailed him. We had to turn in this paper TOMORROW and I was so stressed I couldn’t do it. I had him as my first class that day. We went into the classroom. We were getting ready waiting on students to come in and waiting for class to just start and he got up from his computer and walked over to me and told me the reply in person. I wasn’t even mad at all about it not being replied to that night. I just went in without my paper and hoped I had missed it or I could discuss it with him which I was planning on doing after more people sat down so he wasn’t crowded.
I was usually really good about getting things done but my paper was like 2 pages short of the requirement and the bibliography was unfinished.
People forget that it tells you the time when you emailed them. If a teacher gets mad at you for not emailing them before class or whatever and you did, you can show them the time it was sent. (Never clear your outbox/sent emails folder for that reason) I wasn’t expecting him to see it at about 9 PM when I was in tears writing The email but he saw it the next morning and the first thing he said was “because this email is time and dated for last night I will still honour it because I read it just now” it was my 8 AM class. He was a trooper.
Many teachers unless the deadline for grades is like right quick will level with you if you are polite and if you show them the date and time on the email or they see it themselves will be lenient and not be like “Should have sent this sooner” unless it was after the deadline for something or whatever. Don’t be pushy. Don’t expect a reply ASAP if you’re up at 10 PM and just remember to email the teacher yourself. Parents who work don’t normally check work emails at home, why should their child’s teacher have to?

What is your ideally starting salary for a first year teacher? What do you think a teacher should be paid after five years or with a master's degree or PhD or a doctor degree salary?

    • @thomasmitchell4128
      @thomasmitchell4128 2 года назад

That can depend on the area the teacher starts working in.
I can only speak on teaching in the United States.
What the ideal starting salary is will depend on the state you're working in, the village/town/city you're working in, as well as the specific type of school even. Certain states don't give a crap about their students or teachers and their education system in general. Speaking mostly of the southern states such as Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia just for examples. Living in these states you can expect to need to get a second job most of the time. I say that because all our teachers (yes, all of them) had second jobs.
It depends on the state and also the area of the school. Is it rural? You can expect to be paid less if the school is rural as opposed to if the school is urban. Is the school public or is it private? Private schools or magnet type schools usually pay their teachers better.
I'm sorry I can't give you a better answer but at least in America the pay will be so different depending on so many variables. At least in Louisiana where I'm from where education is ranked worst or 2nd worst in the whole country you can expect to not be compensated well (MOST OF THE TIME. IM NOT SPEAKING IN ABSOLUTES SO DONT COME SAYING CRAZY THINGS TO ME ABOUT THIS).
I will say this, though. At least in the southern states of America, education comes second in the schools, it's all about football programs and other sports. If you can coach something and teach you get paid more than if you only taught. Remember, and I mean this sincerely and wholeheartedly, these schools are sport facilities that "teach" as a side hustle.
Also, and I can only speak about the southern states, if you teach in schools in the south be prepared to forget your principles and morales because if there is an athlete who is winning games for the school (just in my experience and the experiences of many, many, others) you're going to have to pass the student regardless of if they do well in class or not. Hell, whether they even show up to class as it is or not you're still going to be made to give them a good or at least passing grade.
I say all of this from experience in the southern states, in more rural areas that there are schools, at least.
If you want to make more money Google which states have good rankings in education and pick one of the top 5 or top 10 states and just apply apply apply. Sorry, I know that's not what you asked but I'm just telling you what I wish I would've done. Good luck out there.

My daughter had one teacher who genuinely did not like her. She was in 3rd grade and had a 504 and a few diagnosis. The teacher would send progress reports with assignments kids are missing. I asked if my daughter could bring the missing assignments home so that we can do the work. Even if it was just for partial credit. That lady told me no my 3rd grader could NOT make up any assignments because they're in an intermediate grade. I emailed her back and asked her how that made sense when high school kids are even able to make up assignments. I asked her why she was so comfortable with my child failing. I never got a response. I took my baby out of that school because the principal was no help either. She told me she had 500 other students and didn't have time to personally tend to me and mine.

I work with a sped. student who had a terrible experience with a teacher this year. Within the first few months they went from extremely excited about school to being withdrawn. They started sharing things with their parents that raised major concerns.
When the parents contacted the teacher with their concerns over what their student was saying, the teacher responded with "rule number don't believe the kids".
Admin and other teachers also over looked the issues because "students lie all the time".
I really respect Admin. for standing up for their teachers but sometimes it hard to navigate these issues. I understand your frustration over parents instantly believing the child but sometimes it's necessary.
I've seen far to many student be hurt by the system because of disbelief but maybe that's because I work mostly with sped. I'm not sure.

    • @SomeoneBeginingWithI
      @SomeoneBeginingWithI 2 года назад

Yep. Telling parents "kids lie all the time, don't believe your kid" is easy to say for them when they are the teachers and know they're not mistreating any of their own students. If parents actually had that attitude, they would be leaving their children completely vulnerable and with no support if their child actually was abused at school.
Listen to your children. Some of the things they say might turn out to be made up or something they didn't have the words to express clearly, but do listen to them and don't immediately dismiss things.

If a doctor tells you that you have some sort of diagnosis,, you go online and you look at all kinds of medical sites to find out what it means. “Do your research before you start attacking the adult in the room! “ Ask more questions, what exactly do they mean, get more information don’t just take what somebody says by the face value.

Oh man... my mom is a teacher and taught when I was a child I had a horror teacher that I had made projected what she thought her faults were on to me because I was chunky; however, trying to give the teacher benefit of the doubt and respect she left it alone. As an adult my mom let me know she had a hard time keeping her cool and not saying anything infront of me about the inappropriate actions. Such as me getting in trouble for talking and disrupting class when the girl beside me was smacking me over and over again with a pencil, or writing on my pants or the pencil with the eraser taken out and the end smashed flat for pencil wars but she was flicking it at my leg during class and actually cut my pants. Then she made me walk around the play ground during recess if she ever saw me sit down and any kids with me at the time also had to walk too. I lost all my friends because after awhile no one even wanted to get near me. We had had construction work to the football field next to the playground so the playgrounds field had gotten messed up from heavy equipment so it was very uneven. The teacher called us and told us if we didn't get there in 3 seconds we wouldn't have any playground for a week .. no one wanted to be the person to get everyone in trouble. So we all went running well I fell and twisted my ankle. The teacher took everyone inside and left me on the playground crying because my ankle hurt. She eventually came back out with a chair and told me oh well it was close to the end of the day I could stay here til my mom came and got me. 3 hours later when my mom came to get me she went to my teachers class because I wasn't waiting for her at the designated pick up zone to find out that I was on the playground no one had contacted her to let her know I was hurt or that she should come get me nothing. I ended up with a splint and crutches, so I then wasn't allowed to go outside to play at all and was made to stay inside by myself. Then got in trouble for the kids stealing my crutches and so she would take my crutches and put them behind her desk and give them back when she deemed appropriate. I happened to come back from lunch one day with another female friend and the teacher and another teacher had had McDonald's for lunch the other little girl said it smelled good and I mentioned they were so lucky to get McDonald's for lunch. Well my teacher litterally gave me a lecture as the kids were coming in that she could see me in her and that she had been chunky and wished a teacher had told her she was fat so she was telling me I was fat and needed to loose weight and basically told me I was going to die. My mom's last straw was coming in the last week of school and I had gotten in trouble for something small and the teacher had sat my desk outside and completely removed me from the classroom. The cherry on top was that we had to take a test to determine where we were placed to go into middle school. So at the end of the day after we had finished standardized testing she told us to get out a sheet of paper and starts rattling off multiplication problems, like before I could put my name and number she was rattling them off ... I didn't even have enough time to write down the multiple digit numbers let alone multiply them. Then my mom got the results and she was like no that's it I'm done went to the middle school principal and complained and asked that I have the test retaken. They gave me an actual test my mom asked me she was like had you seen the test before because it was supposed to be the test we had been given. I was like no I hadn't ever seen it before... now I had been going to gifted and talented math summer centers because my mom taught at them for years so my math skills were pretty good .. I was slow at multiplication but I could do it I just needed a second to think. I got a 100% on the retest. The principal said there was no way, so they bumped me up the next level down from the top. I did great in math in middle school btw lol I am glad that my mom stuck up for me when it came to getting into the appropriate classes, because I would have failed at school due to boredom if not.

Totally agree. If you don’t take in that mindset they’ll take advantage of you. Teachers also shouldn’t spend one red cent on supplies. Part of the reason they get so little money is because admins know they cover it themselves. You get done what you get done with what you have... The big issues really aren’t going to be solved by teachers working themselves to death or spending their own money on supplies. In fact these practices probably exacerbate some issues.

Regarding the comment at about 3:30 that there is a misconception that when teachers call home about a problem, they're "out to get" the kid. Some of the best advice I ever got came my first year of teaching during the week before school started. The biology teacher, Miss J told me, "Call all of your parents early, just to say hello, introduce yourself, and compliment the child *before* there's a problem. They will love you for it, and if there's a problem later in the year, they will work with you to solve it. Try to talk to all of them before the end of the second week of school."
It worked like a dream and actually moved one father to tears. He answered the phone with, "What did she do this time?"
"Uhh, nothing..." Skeptical silence. "Well, actually something, but nothing bad..." More skeptical silence. "She's in my Spanish I class, and I have a child in there whose first language is not English or Spanish. I just wanted to let you know that she was being very kind and thoughtful to help that child keep up. It's nothing that detracts from her own work, just making sure the other student is on the right page or that she clears her desk when we're about to take a quiz; but it's really helpful to me and the other student."
He thanked me for calling and then told me, "I love my daughter, but sooner or later you're going to find out that she's not a very well-adjusted little girl. She will get in trouble for you eventually, but I'm so grateful you called, because I can't remember any teacher ever having anything good to say about her."
That just broke my heart. I could not imagine getting to ninth grade, being fourteen years old, and never having a teacher compliment me to my parents about anything. She was clever, funny, creative, artistic, and most of the time, she was kind, generous, thoughtful, helpful, and very sweet, too. But then she would get into these moods where he was just the Spawn of Satan. I'm in no way qualified to make any kind of diagnosis, but I think she might have had some kind of mood or hormonal disorder because she'd be bright and cheerful and as sweet as sugar candy one day, and then be the Devil's child the next.
She did eventually get in trouble for me, but the fact that she was sometimes difficult didn't negate her good qualities. I am so glad I made that call, because when she did get in trouble, not only were her parents eager to help sort her out, but she also wanted to get back in my good graces.

I missed lots of excellent opportunities. School is a lot of things to many people. To me it was a 12-year penitential sentence for a crime I didn't commit. Which makes it ironic because of a lot of stuff I did in my thirties was geared toward educating children. Even now. In my sixties. I tend to think of how I can use a lot of off-the-shelf stuff. To build educational toys for children.

Thanks so much for this! I just wish teachers were recognized and validated more for their efforts by parents. A single email would be able to make a teacher’s day if these parents knew enough to take some time out to do so.

I had a student whose initials were NHL. His parents were determined he was going to play pro. Last I heard he made it to semipro.

When the school shut down happened it was a rude awaking for parents.. well the ones who was not involved in their children schooling.. Prior to this they acted like it was a teachers responsibility to teach their children and that was it.. but it’s actually teachers and the parents always has been and always will be.. as a parent it is your responsibility to make sure your children are taken care of

Don't most schools have rules that you can't play sports if you have lower grades anyways? Like unless thats a baseball team not correlated with school, you can't play if your grades aren't good

We have a rule where I work that if you're failing a class you can't play, but it's not really even enforced 🤦🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️

Our state ( Illinois ) also closed down all the public schools on March 13, 2020 . Our students didn't have chrome books until Aug. 2020. But virtual was Hell . My grand daughter ( high school student ) would go on line Mon - Fri . for classes but one teacher was never on line . An the teacher would mark her absent every day . Come to find out the teacher was going line one day of the week . and doing all of her classes all at once on Sundays ( During church hours 8am - Noon ) .While my family was at outdoor church services . God comes first in our house . My daughter also worked for the school district ( para ) and had a second job at the time also . The teacher was upset because after my daughter spoke to this very rude teacher she complained about it to the district school board office . Which the board had no clue that is what the teacher was doing at all . So they had to get that teacher to do her job during normal school working hours , All of our restaurants were closed for inside services an only had drive thru (when they had product and workers ) . We had students sitting outside of Taco Bell in the parking lot doing their classes because they had wifi there ( No wifi at home ) . The school buses ran their routes every day to bring out the school meals and drop off /pick up class packets for all the students . ( 90% of all students rode the school bus daily and 100% all the students received Free lunch ) . It doesn't matter if your a parent or a teacher there is always going to be some good some bad and some ugly . An some just stupid LOL . From a past Head Start Teacher .

It's not that we think yall don't do that much work in one day. I know yall be teaching ya'lls heart out! For real! However we aren't teachers, we are not trained or educated in skills you have to have to teach. During quarantine i struggled so much with the amount of work that was expected of my child. Im a nurse who works FT in family med, i was working the front lines during the heat of the pandemic. So it has nothing to do with what you guys can get done, and do get done in a day. It's what can a "non-teacher" do and be successful with their kid/s. What can us Muggles, if you will, do and not become overwhelmed and in result of that, digress in their education. At the end of the day, yall are trained to teach.

I have a question for all of you. What is your opinion on punishing an entire class because of 1-2 students that misbehaved? I don’t know if I don’t understand if because I’m young, but I personally think that only the misbehaved kids should be getting written up.
