    I think you have a very good point. I happen to like that Nikon only records what I ask for because I often crop in camera to get smaller files. It seems like an easy toggle setting to put in the menus "Record Full Frame RAW When Viewing Other Cropped Aspect Ratios \" yes/no Sometimes the little things mean a lot! My pet peeve is no RAW files in pre-capture mode. It seems like they could offer this at a reduced frame rate with simple firmware updates. Oh well, the perfect camera isn't here yet! I think you do a great job with your videos!

      When I chance the aspect ratio in the camera, it is to get smaller file size. Nikon does, others don’t.

    • @metphmet
      @metphmet 4 месяца назад

      @@ivarschiager8529 I am sorry but if you want to reduce the file size it should not affect the composition . This is simply unrelevant.
      Currently Sony cameras offer different sizes for Raw files by changing the resolution without changing the aspect ratio.

      Idk. I don't exactly know how it all works on my Sony, but for sure if you shoot in APSC crop, the raw is APSC size, not full frame. I do all my cropping in post, so I haven't played with anything but standard vs APSC crop.

  • @RFranks
    @RFranks 28 дней назад +1

    They should really have an option in the camera that lets you save the full sensor data or just the crop. It would also be nice to have other aspect ratios like on the X-T5 plus being able to assign changing those ratios to a custom button.

  • @trishf29
    @trishf29 4 месяца назад +7

    Well stated, Matti. I find it a nuisance as I sometimes change my mind with aspect ratios. If I shoot a 1:1, then in Post, realise I should have shot it in another aspect, say 4:3, then I can change it back to the native aspect ratio. I found, with my Nikon, that was not the case, I had to crop. There are many cameras on the market, not just one brand, so cannot understand why some people get upset over one brand. We have a choice, so buy what suits your style of photography. Otherwise Nikon is a great camera!

    This totally makes sense, you'd get cropped JPG and full RAW file, which would be perfect if you shoot both.
    I didn't use crop, since Sony cameras I have are rather limited in this regard, they have 3:2, 16:9, some later add 1:1, but I'd like to shoot more 4:3 for example, from what I've seen Fuji has most options for crop I think, but it would be too much effort to change systems now for different crop factors in camera, plus I'm stupid, so I decide crop afterwards xD
    If I had more client work that would specifically require such aspect rations this would be completely different story.
    Cheers and don't let frustrated people drag you down.

    Not sure what confusion can people have. I for one did not know this, and would consider now to not buy Nikon over it. Imagine if the 61mp sony did this, recomposing those types of shots are definitely useful, specially for action photography where sometimes the thing is at the edge of the frame, and you use crop mode to focus better because the magnifier blows things too close.

    • @rogermuggleton8127
      @rogermuggleton8127 4 месяца назад

      The original LX100 saves a cropped RAW too. I've never noticed this before, perhaps because (on all my cameras) I always shoot the maximum size and crop to a square after taking shots. Back 50+ years ago cameras didn't give an accurate picture in the viewfinder. SLR viewfinders tended to show, say, 95% of the image on the film and rangefinders had their own compromises. My solution back then was to shoot a little wider and crop when printing. I guess I still work the same way.

    I have to admit that I somewhat find the Nikon way better, because I have always wanted camere with square sensor, and now nikon giving me the possibility only save what I see in the picture is nice. The file size is also smaller. If you are photographer that shoots only squares, you don't need to save any extra data in every picture.

I am a recreational photographer with a very recent digital photographic history. My working years had no connection to photography, but even I knew exactly what you were talking about. Note that the possibilities in the Sony bodies have been extended recently. In the past we had only 3/2 and 16/9 with no possibilty to recover the full sensor size if you chose 16/9. Really annoying compared to micro 4/3 which was much more advanced.
    I suppose that the benchmark for Nikon was Sony at the time of the Z5 launch and what it offers is still better than the then competing Sony bodies.
    Micro 4/3 bodies are very advanced in their features. They should be benchmarked and not ignored…..

    The reason is that originally Nikon saw smaller aspect ratios as a means of increasing frame rate and/or reducing file size. Saving the full raw file undermines both of those. There is a tendency for engineers to get ingrained into a practice even after the reason for it has gone.

    • @mattisulanto

    With the greatest respect, Matti, The 3x2 (36x24) aspect ratio has been the full frame standard from the first Leica to use 35mm film. I'm sorry but this is not an issue for anyone else. 36x24 will be the size of a full frame sensor forever. If you want to have a different aspect ratio, it will be slightly cropped and this is the same for all full frame hybrid cameras. If you want to shoot native 16:9 for video, then do as most serious video shooters are doing now, and thats to use a proper video camera. Thats why Canon, Nikon and Panasonic have a dedicated video solution right up to cinema quality products. Its why Nikon bought Red. Canon already has their video platform anyway, so Nikon was catching up, thats all.

    True, most people will simply be using the whole frame. Maybe Nikon wants you to buy two cameras -- one for video work and one for stills. In the USA, when they knock $400 off on the Nikon Z5, you could buy two for the price of one like camera of another brand. Never question the gift! 🤓 I hear what you saying, and you are correct. When out on the street photographing, it has happened many a time where I cropped in so tight, later to find there was more going on, or the photo had no room to breathe, or have negative space, I then realized I was too tight. In much the same way, what you are saying could be a negative. Mostly, people just don't use the different aspect ratios, or when they do, they would simply kick themselves if they realized they needed a little more. Oh well, I bought the camera for under $997 USD, and consider it a good Nikon gift. 🥰
