    Thank you for an interesting video. I have been looking around for a new camera. And this aspect ratio cropping on the Z cameras has sort of turned me away from them. So I was looking at maybe getting a Sony a7r II or III version but I read somewhere that you can't shoot square on them at all, is that true or have they fixed that?

      @mattisulanto  Месяц назад

      The Z5 is a really good value unless that aspect ratio is somehow an absolute deal breaker. My A7IV can shoot 1:1 but I don't about the A7RII or the A7RIII.

      @@mattisulanto Thank for a quick reply. I really like the colours out of the Nikon Zs. And there are quite a few cheap primes, the 40mm and 28mm as well as 3rd party lenses. I don't know if the crop of the raw is that deal breaker really. I currenly use a Fuji X-T20 and I mostly shoot jpegs and it is nice to see the composition directly in the EVF. But I suppose I can crop in post.
      I have been looking at a lot of cameras and I am mostly interested in Olympus/OMDS and Nikon and Fuji, the Sonys have been interesting after I learned about the crop on the Zs. I want a weather sealed camera. The MFT seems smartest out of economic stand point alot of cheap 2nd hand lenses. I also like the idea of the live composite and the ability to focus stack in camera, smaller lenses etc. But I am a beginner and I am not sure about how they do in low light especially if I want to freeze movement.
      Since I am a beginner and I have only used the X-T20, I only have 2nd hand knowledge about the differences between the different sensors. Sorry for rambling on 😀.

    I thought you were going to say that they had the A4 paper / A1 poster aspect ratio that Sigma fp cameras have, as I think Hasselblad has added this now, and it makes a lot of sense for printing so I expect the industry to increasingly include it.
    Forums often complain of having to re-activate crops for raw files, so I can understand the decision from Nikon.
    Personally, I'd almost always shoot square with Fuji cameras. I'd often find completely new compositions when I'd go over the file with the in-camera adjustments -- even discovering entirely new subjects off-frame when I'd change the aspect ratio. For that reason, I'd prefer raw to include the whole film canvas. An OPTION to hardcode the crop in raw formats would be useful in some situations, though.
    The Z5 price-to-performance attracted me, too -- primarily as a platform for M lenses or double-adapted SA lenses (to avoid Sony), or to use Voigtlaenders unadapted; but now that L-mount is diversifying (+ PHASE-DETECT!!), and Voigtlaender is making even smaller lenses for Fuji (I still have an X-T2 and X-Pro1), it would not see much use.
    My GAS bursts are pretty much confined to L-mount now (like the exotic Blackmagics and Sigmas) -- at least until an X-Pro4 or some other HybridVF rangefinder appears.
    Thanks!💎🦘

    Hi Matti. I,must admit I have difficulties to understand your point.´if your aim is to be able to reframe a certain aspect ratio… shoot in full frame and put the aspect ratio - where you want it in the frame - in post…

    • @funnybeingme
      @funnybeingme Месяц назад +2

      I don't understand either. For ex, if your intent when photographing a scene is to present it in 16x9, then it doesn't matter what's outside of that ratio. It's like when you take a photo of a scene at 50mm, even tho you have a 28-70mm zoom lens. You commit that outside of that frame, it doesn't matter. Otherwise, one would shot shoot everything at 28mm and crop to whatever field of view you want in post because you fear that you may be missing out.

    I think I know about the aspect ratio problem. I took a photo years ago with my Olympus PEN E-PL2 in 16:9 and the version of Lightroom at the time I could not see the full raw file only the 16:9. There is a old plugin to view the full raw file but I tried it and did not work for me. Years later I opened that raw file with a much newer version of Lightroom and there was the full 4:3 ratio of that photo I took.
    From what I understand about raw files. Companies have to give the keys to Adobe so they can read all the data. A lot of times Adobe has to hack around to open up these raw files. If you look at Sony and Canon they do not share the key with Adobe to view the lens profile. That's why Adobe to to make their own lens profiles for Canon and Nikon.
    From my understanding Olympus aka OM Systems and Panasonic five Adobe full control so the photographer to edit their files very good.

    It makes more sense if you consider that this aspect ratio selection is primarily for switching between full frame (FX) and crop (DX), since when using DX lenses you would just get a lot of heavy vignetting around the frame, making most of the image outside the DX frame pretty much useless. So it makes sense to just throw that away to conserve space and have the ability to take more photos before the internal buffer runs out.

With other cameras, you can use them as a guide and it’ll go back to the original in Post, which means you need to determine which ratio you want when shooting. Well, I don’t think this is a new thing for a Nikon shooter. I shot with several Nikon DSLR models in the past. Nikon's cropped mode always affects the RAW file permanently, and there is no way to restore the original 3:2 size. It seems they implement the RAW file cropping to their mirrorless as well. That’s why when I was still shooting with the Nikon DSLR, I only used 3:2 full size and never used the other aspect ratio. If wanted to crop then did it in Post.

    I didn't believe that I will consider Nikon once again after switching to Fuji 9 years ago. I went through few Fuji Cameras and I will stick to my X-T5 + prime, but I am considering to buy second body just with zoom for travel. In this case I don't need to have another Fuji because it will be just one body and one lens. Fuji offer is worse - mid-level cameras are fine for video but lack of weather sealing, better battery, 2 SD cards and big evf (X-T50), or still lack weather sealing, 2 SD, bigger evf (X-S20). Another X-T5 would cost me more than Nikon Z5 + 24-70/4. Very very hard decision and Nikon has no competition now in this segment. I don't need 8-11 fps, 4k 60fps etc. I just want camera for travel. Fuji benefit is size, weight and colors across my setup, but that is it. 🥲
