Yesssss more Nikon Z videos! This was helped and learned somethings I didn't know, like the awkward changing iso mode move haha. Glad I wasn't the only one doing that.
Hi Omar - the a10 low light function only works in AF-S so turning it off, or on, if you only shoot AF-C is irrelevant. As such, I would leave it on, so that if you do opt to switch to AF-S you can have the benefit of this feature - which essentially jacks up the ISO for a quick moment to that the camera can obtain focus. I recently found out (@FramesTM on RUclips pointed this out) that if you turn off the Live View function and shoot the camera without Live View that the camera will focus much better in low light scenarios in AF-C mode. Essentially, the viewfinder is constantly boosting ISO to give a bright image in the EVF and as such the AF system is able to easily lock on. Of course, you have to shoot like the DSLR days where you watch the meter because you have no idea about exposure simply by looking as you would when Live View is on, however, for those of us that have been shooting for decades this is not a problem and the low light AF is significantly better. Addendum: I just saw the end of the video where you mention this last point. I am leaving the comment in there so that others might understand exactly what you mean, but in my experience lately the camera does focus much better in low light when the Live View is off and the camera is shot like a DSLR. Good video - thanks :) -B
I'm on a fuji xt20 but I have been constantly thinking about upgrading to either an xt4 or the nikon z6ii. Still don't know but I am very intrigued by both cameras.
Hi Omar, your videos always interesting and brought with humor! Very interested in more of your Nikon experience. I have linked the zoom function on my Z7 to the 'video record' button and the AF to a function button (fn 2, fn 1 I put at tracking - may swap these). Couple of reasons, in particular easier to use both front and back dials to change AF mode and cycle through C-S-M modes without finger gymnastics. And checking focus with zoom is one of the final things you would do before taking the picture so your finger only needs to travel a very small distance and it is the same finger that will push the shutter release. Looking forward to see your AF settings video. I find it very useful that in AF-C modus while keeping the back button pressed you can see the peaking color move if you change focus (also when zoomed in but that is not really necessary)
I am so excited by the Z30. I came to Fuji for its size to quality ratio more than anything. And now here's Nikon with the Z30, Sony with the A7C, and even the Canon EOS R is lighter and smaller than the X-T4, plus they have the RF mount M6II coming. I'm very ready to switch. No idea who's getting my money yet. 😂
Great video Omar! Keep the Z tutorials coming, please! I'm taking your recommendation and going for the used Z6ii to start my transition. You are so funny!
Keep them coming Omar. I listened to yours and Moe's latest podcast episode about your decision to stick with Nikon and I found it so relatable. I've darted between brands for a few years now but the Z5 was my first entry into full frame and the image quality blows me away. The Z5 is a bit sluggish for tracking my kids and it hasn't been super reliable in eye-detect mode. I bought an A7C for the subject tracking and it's so so reliable at capturing the shot, but having had the chance to use it side by side with the Nikon, I'm really struggling to let go of the Z5, especially with the Z 85mm 1.8 on the front of it. Makes me want to master the camera rather than going with the easy choice and these videos will definitely help. And hopefully Nikon are only a camera body/firmware update away from having their AF usability refined!
Same here, I love the image quality Nikon cameras and lenses produce! I think they are a firmware or camera away from matching and beating the competition's :)
Omar I found that there is a tool to make Nikon Picture control changes, if you ever have the time it would be awesome to see a video on how to make Fujifilm simulations for Nikon. Nikon full frame with Fujifilm simulations, Perfect Camera.
Thanks for your video Omar. Really clear and informative. I come from the old Nikon D700 and all the new setting on these mirrorless cameras are kind of overwhelming, videos like this are gold :)
Cool Video! I have been struggling with my Z50 for settings... I will review this video again and make notes... I recently purchased the Z30, so it will be interesting to see your take on it...
Great to see more Nikon videos here! For me, I like to try different setups, so I don't change the button functions on different brand bodies. The only controls I find difficult to work with (vanilla) are Fujifilm. I'll need to open that user manual one day just to find my way around things. I'm sure there are button shortcuts to change things without having to go to the menu, which is where I spend most of my time when shooting my X-T20!
These videos on settings always teach me something. I’m going to make a habit of going through one major menu section per day from now on. Seems to me, I have missed some options you pointed out today. It must be that after a while, I lose concentration and don’t notice some settings are available and don’t ask myself how I might us the option. So, thanks!
Great video! Love your changes. I really like the idea of the punch in for focus shortcut. Very clever. I'll have to try it out. I also use movie record for AF functions, and I have my dials reversed like you do. (Who uses the front finger while pressing the button? What is this? A yoga class... for fingers?!?!) My two function buttons are set for depth of field preview (which I found out I needed) and subject tracking. Joystick push in set for AE-Lock. I use the OK button to reset focus point to center. I wish I could reverse the last two, but the OK button can't be set for AE-Lock and it's a feature I use.
Oh there's a lot more you could cover on the menu. It would take you a long time to do so. One thing you didn't mention was customizing the quick menu to have the things in it you want to change. I have my screen brightness, white balance, bracketing, the different focusing modes and a few others. And here's another thing you may or may not know. For the cameras that have the U1, U2, and U3 on the dial, you can set the camera up exactly how you want for a specific type of photography and save it to one of those settings on the dial. I like to take pictures of the milky way. If I want to I can set my ISO, shutter speed and aperture along with single focus point and other things and save it to U1. I can set U2 up for portraits. I could then set U3 for sports or wildlife or set it for landscape settings. You can set up a quick menu for each one of them. You can also set your function buttons differently for each U settings. It gets confusing trying to remember how you set everything up unless you use each one often. That's one thing I love about the z6 II. There's so many ways to configure it. But this is also one reason why I recommend entry level cameras to new photographers. There's so many features and options on the higher end cameras. Just learning the basics can be overwhelming to a new shooter. Basic menus are easier to learn and deal with. Then move up to more complicated cameras later. Good video. That was a really good tip with the zoom in to get the focus and zoom out. I didn't know that. I learned something today.
@@ogonzilla you did a good job on what you did cover. It would probably take an hour or two to show everything. And even then you might miss something.
Hi Omar! Would really like to see one video like these for your Sony A7 setup!!! Always learn something from your videos (even in this case, that i don't own a Nikon camera!)
very helpful. There are so many settings and differences between brands, I don't know how you keep it all straight when you switch form Nikon to Fuji or other brands. 😀
Great news you've got a Z30 to review. I was thinking of buying one as a additional camera to my D750. I tried one in a local camera shop but couldn't get the AF to consistently work. So it'll be interesting seeing how you work with it. I wanted it for a less conspicuous camera, but apart from the AF I really liked the design.
very useful but I think you missed one that has been crucial for me. I dont remember the name of the setting but basically is to tell teh camera not to take photos if there is no memory card installed. more than once I thought I was taking photos just to realized I had forgotten to insert the memory card :)
Great videos Omar. I am a longtime professional photog but this mirrorless focusing system in low light has got me baffled. I end up switching back to my DSLR. Not having the IR beam from my flash in super low light is a major problem. The green light on the Z7II just doesn't cut it. I would love some tips on how you approach events, specifically dark dance floor receptions. Thanks!
Omar you should try auto ISO in Program mode, a lot better control than using A or S. If you're using M, disregard. But give it a try, it'll get you closer to those limits you set but you can also still input exp. comp and it'll raise the iso but go to your shutter speed and dynamically alter between the set shutter speed and iso limit. If you use A, it'll force the camera to shoot as fast as possible b/c the Aperture isn't altered. The camera moves F/stop, SS and ISO. Pretty neat when you figure out how to work it b/c it'll choose apertures in the right scene. I think that's where the claimed 30k images Nikon always advertises.
Omar, please test this for me. The touch AF feature on my Z6II will override the a1 and a2 settings (set to Release on my camera). I use AF-C and single point AF with back button focusing. I can press the shutter release button regardless of the subject being in focus and the camera will take the picture. Once I use the touch AF on the monitor, the shutter release button will refuse to take photos if the target is not in focus. I have to switch the camera off, wait a little time, turn it back on to enable shutter release without the camera being in focus.
I had this happen to me while shooting an event this past weekend. I wonder if that was what was happening. I could not get the camera to focus in low light and it absolutely wouldn't fire unless it was in focus. I ended up switching to my D810 to finish the job.
Hey, this is toitally unrelated to the video's topic, but I've seen your Nikon Df wallpaper for a few videos and I've been wondering if you've been contemplating the fact of getting one? This camera is very much to the D4 what the D700 was to the D3 (with a vintage twist). I know they can get a lil expensive though, do you consider it worth it ?
If you’ve done this video and I’ve missed it I’m sorry but would love to know your thoughts on Z50/ ZFC vs Fuji equivalents. I feel like Fuji release cycles have neglected the lower/ mid range models at the moment and for around £/$1200 fuji a lot of fuji models are discontinued. ZFC is looking pretty good
Thank you, Omar, for your excellent videos. I watch them all the time, and I have learned much from them. I have a Z30; my first Nikon camera in many years. I can't figure out how to get back button focusing. Firmware is 1.11. Does this camera not have it? Thanks!
Hey Omar, isn’t it faster to change to Auto ISO , by pressing Iso and holding the button and turning front wheel and then with back wheel you set the maximum Auto ISO? So you dont have to dive into menu.
Great tips and hacks especially the zoom in where it reverts to AF-S, Omar. 👍 Question: @8min mark you mentioned turning live view off, in that case is the exposure spot on in matrix metering? Because in DSLR mode the exposure metering becomes important.
I've had my Z6ii for a few months and thought I knew everything there was to know about the menu, but I didn't know until now that with Low-light AF on the camera will slow down focusing. And regarding live view exposure, I like seeing the exposure change which I couldn't with my DSLRs. But now I'm rethinking turning it off in low light situations. Is the focusing really that much quicker with this setting turned off? And how did you even figure out these little quirks that slow down focusing?
