  • Environmentalists warned that a mine proposed to be built near the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge could damage the swamp’s fragile ecosystem. Supporters argue the mine will invigorate the local economy without impacting the swamp. NBC News’ Priya Sridhar reports. (Correction: An earlier version of this piece mischaracterized part of Twin Pines Minerals’ statement. The company says no mining activity will be conducted below the highest water levels of the Okefenokee. This video has been updated.)

There seems to be an omission of information in this article. What exactly is the mine mining? What kinds of materials need tons of water to get out of the Earth? I can't make informed decisions unless I know what the mine is going to be used for.
Edit 1: I found out they're going to mine Titanium Dioxide at this proposed mine. It's an additive in many things that includes paints, toothpaste, & some food products. The EU banned the stuff as a food additive so with that said I do not approve of this mine going into the swamp anymore.

Money over anything else seems to be the governing rule. I hope Georgia doesn't allow it, especially for a mining product that the FDA has no business authorizing because of its harmful effects on humans.

At the very least an independent ecological study of the proposed mine needs to be conducted. I’m all for preserving the remaining natural habit this beautiful country has.
Considering the concerns about global warming, I think swamps should be one of the last things we mess with

What can actually be done in instances like this? It seems like for the last 60 years that any time people have tried to prevent companies from becoming a detriment to conservation efforts usually go unnoticed in any significantly large way? We don't want to change our ways and habits but also don't want to do anything to protect and save the habitats that affect many different species. So I ask again. What can be done?
