If they wanted a system that has close to the F-35A capability they would end up with the Rafale or Typhoon tranche IV not the Gripen. The Typhoon would also be a logistically relevant choice as many countries use it but it would still leave long vulnerable supply lines.
The only thing that the Gripen is a winner in is the price of the C/D. The E/F is very expensive more so than the F-35A. All fourth generation aircraft are as expensive as the F-35A but lack the highest level of new developments.

Your analysis is incomplete, a serious error in the context of this video: they spend much more on defence than Europe. They would have the perspective that if Europe didn't rely on the US for defence and aimed for a similar strength, Europe might have to make painful choices on public services and some on civilian infrastructure. Given the US has already made those choices, they will not appreciate being presented with your argument.
In reality it is more complicated, but this trade-off has to be considered. It is part of what irritates the Americans: 'yes but you enjoy a big 'peace dividend' that's actually partly a 'sponge off the US military' dividend'.

Time will tell if local solution serve our needs better. We have recently been and should continue to go down the right path of producing our own weapons, allowing us to fund our own R&D. We can't continue to let the USA supply weapons to everyone from afar, followed by loans to rebuild what those weapons destroyed. They are the only ones who benefit from world wars and they are all too happy to encourage war to break out as long as it's far from American boarders and at the expense of their "greatest allies" in Europe.

The problem with the US economy is not that the EU is treating them poorly or unfairly in an economic sense. The problem lies in the fact that the Americans have been living beyond their means for decades and have therefore built up astronomical foreign debts. These debts then have to be refinanced and that is actually a vicious circle.
Threatening and blackmailing with high American import tariffs also makes no sense. Products from the EU are only becoming more expensive for American families, while there are no alternatives on the American market. If Europe can no longer sell their products in the USA, the EU will soon tap into new markets in Asia, for example. As a result, the USA will increasingly isolate itself.

US claims about defence spending do not factor in the way European nations use other spending to 'subsidise' what is military spending in the US. National health care deals with military long term health (not veterans' specific facilities on the military payroll), similarly education, civi engineering (no equivalent of the US Corp of Engineers doing national infrastructure programmes), etc. etc. Obviously this cannot be unpicked from US budgets (they would not like that at all). US government subsidies to defence contractors would not be acceptable in European budgets either. It is all bollocks.

It is ironic seeing as the US would not even exist without the aid from other European nations in its war of independence. Most of americans also stem from this part of the world. Their ancestors would surely squirm in their graves if they saw how they treated their brotherfolk today. Greenland has been a part of the Danish kingdom for 800 years - 3 times the age of the USA. Bullying allies trying to annex their territories is insane. Europe stands with the Danes.

    • @artgreen6915
      @artgreen6915 10 дней назад +3

Hmmm. Let's be more specific. The US was aided in its fight for independence, mainly by France, against Britain.
That's fairly neutral overall on Europe and was a long time ago. France did that mainly as a strategic move against Britain. Denmark didn't have a large part to play afaik. This whole dynamic had been moved on from by the time of WW1 now over hundred years ago itself. How time flies.
Europe then had some little problems itself internally that you've glossed over. Then there were some landings in Normandy that I think Europe should be quite grateful for because otherwise it wouldn't have been US/UK forces meeting in the middle with USSR. Then there was a little Marshal Plan thing.
That's a long time ago now also, but significantly more recent than what you're highlighting.
I'm not defending Trump's stance on Greenland, don't misunderstand me. Just trying to rebalance some of the comments. There's no point in alienating the Americans by forgetting the perspectives that they WILL think are justifiable. Or by over emphasising factors the Americans won't care about or see as repaid long ago.
They've disproportionately propped NATO up for decades. They'd say they've long since paid any debt to Europe, if they'd even agree that they ever had one.

@@artgreen6915 Once the USSR was destroyed most European nations started dismantling their military, because the threat was gone, whilst the US willingly continued spending ridiculous amounts of money on their military even when there were no threat. NATO has no say in how much money the US spends on domestic affairs, including its military. To say that the US does this for the benefit of it's European allies is a blatant lie. It's to further increase US power & influence and no other reason. The US spends 7 times that of Russia today on their military. The second country in the world which spends most on it's military is China, and even compared to those the US spends a staggering 3 times their amount. Even in a ratio of 1:1 their strength would be reassured including the rest of its NATO allies. But no, they keep it up and blames the expenditure on their allies.

And much of the remaining money goes into paying Polish workers, who are paying income tax in Poland. The rest of the money will be spend by the factory owners and workers, mostly circulating back into the Polish economy. And the manufacturer will buy many of its components and materials from other suppliers in Poland. Who pay business tax, and their workers pay income tax in Poland.

Yes, but that isn't good enough. Poland isn't the only country in Europe that needs artillery, but none of those benefits apply to any country other than Poland's own vehicle purchases.
The USA has a single MBT. A single tracked 155mm artillery vehicle. A single AFV. Most importantly, the USA produces thousands of each. That leverages economies of scale and massively reduces the cost per unit.
In Europe we have the opposite situation, with a dozen or more designs of each vehicle type and we produce only a handful of units each.
As a result, Americans receive much more material for every dollar spent than Europeans do. Winning wars ultimately boils down to economics. It's about which country can sustain the war effort, and the cost of equipping a military in an attritional war is central to that.
Europe can never overcome this disadvantage without systemic changes. A polish Crab being so much more expensive is a fine national stimulus program. It's an utter failure as a military vehicle that must be mass produced at low cost for defensive purposes.
I don't mean to pick on Poland here. Every European country has this problem. In many cases far worse.

@ this was a answer to this comment ,that was deleted: Europe should first create lasting foundations for economic growth and stop its civilizational decline, and then we will talk about its negotiating power.
Europe's civilizational decline, as you put it, is quite the overstatement. In reality, Europe's foundations for economic growth remain solid. While the USA tends to think of itself as the center of the universe, let's take a deeper look at both continents before making sweeping claims.
First, Europe has a combined GDP that is on par with the U.S. and a population of over 740 million. The EU is the largest trading bloc in the world, and its economic power isn't just based on its size but on its highly developed infrastructure, innovation in fields like green energy, technology, and finance, as well as its dominant role in global trade. While the U.S. is indeed the largest economy on a national scale, its own growth has been increasingly reliant on high levels of debt, while Europe has largely avoided such pitfalls, focusing on sustainability and long-term stability.
Europe may not be growing at the same pace as the U.S. in some areas, but that’s partly due to Europe’s careful, deliberative approach to regulation and progress. European economies tend to focus on quality of life, social programs, and environmental sustainability, which are often sidelined in the U.S. in favor of rapid growth and corporate interests. For instance, Europe’s healthcare and social safety nets might not be perfect, but they’re leagues ahead of the fragmented and often inequitable systems found across the U.S.
As for Europe’s "civilizational decline," that's a term straight out of fearmongering rhetoric. European culture, arts, philosophy, and governance models are still massively influential across the world. Europe has experienced demographic challenges, but many countries have already been tackling these issues through innovation in technology, a focus on immigration and labor market flexibility, and even in fostering homegrown talent in rapidly growing fields like artificial intelligence and green technologies.
The U.S., meanwhile, is struggling with issues of political polarization, income inequality, and an often unsustainable focus on consumption, military spending, and short-term financial gains. The U.S. might be doing well in areas like technology and military power, but let's not pretend that its unchecked capitalism and constant need to expand its influence haven't caused their own problems.
Europe, on the other hand, has a history of being more collaborative-perhaps that’s something the U.S. could learn from. While the U.S. often uses a more aggressive approach in its foreign relations, Europe has been able to maintain peace through diplomacy, even after centuries of conflict. Its international institutions, like the European Union and NATO, show that Europe has built lasting institutions that promote stability-not just for itself but for its neighbors.
So, before dismissing Europe as declining or weak, it’s worth considering that Europe’s strength is in its ability to adapt to the modern world, its social contracts, and its focus on cooperation over dominance. It’s not all about GDP growth or military might. In the long run, quality of life, sustainability, and cooperation could very well be the models the world needs to follow.

I feel many in the EU parliament are causing more problems than they fix and while i certainly want a closer relationship i think we should not rejoin as the EU will want to impose different rules on Britain as punishment for leaving in the first place.

This would be electoral suicide and there is also the factor that most of the representatives from EU nations have near PTSD from all the arguments that came from the Brexit process in the first place meaning that they have no wish to re-open these wounds any time soon. However the UK is already a member of several alliances with NATO members separately from the NATO charter already.

Yet again, even if every country in the world love to make fun of us for no reason, us French were right, we were bullied ( and still are ) when we said that the US lied about Iraq having weapons of mass destruction, turns out we were right, and the same thing happened when we tried to tell everyone about the real motives of the USA and that everyone should work on being independent from them, and again we were right…
Now we are the only country in Europe with a defense sector strong enough the produce everything an army might need by ourselves… I’m sure our defense companies would be glad to help our European allies take their independence from the US but even with a defense industry as strong as ours I don’t know if it would be enough to completely fill the gap.

Well, no, we are no longer capable to produce everything an army need : the FAMAS has been replaced by the HK416, sacrilège !! ;p
It's a bit of shame that we have given up small arms and ammunition production, but I kind of get it : we're not a big country anymore, we can not continue to invest in everything.
I think it's a better move to be specialized in some areas (naval, nuke, arty, jets, light armor) and to buy better items from our european allies.
By doing that, we spread the risk and boost each other industries, but every european must play along and start seeing that the US want vassals and not allies.

Very nicely done. I think we all agree that it is in the European interest to be as self sufficient as possible. The US may not necessarily be there and Europe has all what it takes to depend on itself. Vis a vis Russia, Europe has four times the population and more than ten times the GNP, which means that it is only a question of political will for Europe to withstand Russian agression, if necessary.

    • @andrew3203
      @andrew3203 12 дней назад

The issue of Greenland is deeper than your one line slogan. Starting with the Monroe Doctrine, that Denmark is in breach of, for holding a colony in North America. But worse than that, the incursion of Chinese and Russian ships and other assets into Greenland places America at risk, and I don't see how Denmark could or would defend Greenland against such incursions. A strongly worded letter would not deter a superpower from just taking your stuff.

@@andrew3203An American doctrine from 1823, are you kidding?? It’s not like Denmark signed a deal with the US so it doesn’t matter what unilateral doctrines the US declares. Besides, Greenland has been part of Denmark for 800 years and nowdays have a great deal of autonomy. Greenlanders are EU citizens (Greenland being an EU outermost region), so Trump just threatened the EU, regardless of Greenland’s connection to Denmark.
And as for China: ok, so the dictature China follows international rules and makes peaceful trade deals with Greenland, while the US threatens Greenland with military consequences if they can’t buy it. Not a very pleasant comparison for the US…

Canadian here. Frankly, we have been subjected to these bullying tactics in trade for as long as I can remember (I’m sixty-seven BTW). Softwood lumber, dairy products, automobiles are a few examples.
Trump is just taking it to a higher level in an attempt to dictate to Canada what we should prioritize.
I think that our healthcare system (while far, far from perfect) is an ongoing embarrassment to the US, particularly Republicans, their hospitals, doctors, and pharmaceutical companies. They would like nothing more than for us to abandon our public system and go back to a private system. Tariffs, and threats to spend much more on the border and military are an attempt to influence our spending.
I’ll not argue with anyone whether Canada has lived up to its NATO spending commitments (we haven’t) but that is our choice and I still believe we have been a valuable member of NATO.
Honestly, the only threat Canada faces is from our “ally” to the south, and we can never outspend them.

In fact the EU and western allies have more cutting edge technologies than the US, easily. And a lot of technologies in the American military are from western nations.
Canada is a good example of technologies outside of the US as both NORAD and the five eyes systems were developed by the Canadian government over 50 years ago! And are still cutting edge to this day.
Nordic nations, the UK, France, Germany all have military technologies beyond American technologies.
