The Doobie Brothers are an American musical group from the 1970s, to be counted among the rock genre with blues-funky components. Initially formed in 1969 by Tom Johnston, guitarist and songwriter, and John Hartman, drummer, who were gradually joined by other musicians. The group's name is derived from a slang term for marijuana. During their career, the Doobie Brothers won a large number of Grammy Awards and gold and platinum records.
Their hits include What a Fool Believes, Jesus Is Just Alright, Black Water, China Grove, Listen to the Music and Long Train Runnin'.
The first nucleus of the band was formed in 1969 in San Jose: Tom Johnston (guitar, vocals) and John Hartman (drums) draw their first inspiration from Skip Spence's Moby Grape musical project with whom they had the opportunity to collaborate, choosing themselves as a name Pud, a slang term with an ambiguous meaning. The following year, with the arrival of bassist Dave Shogren and guitarist, singer and songwriter Patrick Simmons, they changed their name to The Doobie Brothers: they will always be known as the Doobies or Doobs. During that time they held numerous concerts throughout California, attracting sympathy and fans among the local Hell's Angels groups and performing regularly in one of the bikers' favorite venues, the Chateau Liberté in the mountainous areas south of San Francisco. The two souls of the group, Johnston's guitar with his R&b and Simmons' guitar with his fingerstyle, are different but compatible and offer a variety of inspiration that ranges between genres.
Early demos landed the Doobs a deal with Warner Bros. Records and the band defined their distinctive sound from the debut with two unison lead guitars, tripartite harmonies and a frenetic soundtrack. The image (leather jackets and motorcycles) was not reflected in the contents of the first self-titled album of 1971 rich instead of acoustic sounds and country influences. The record sold only a few copies among West Coast hippies but the second album Toulouse Street propelled them to success with the songs, now rock classics, Listen to the Music, Rockin' Down the Highway, Jesus Is Just Alright and the arpeggiated, persuasive title track (written by Simmons with a text that takes place in New Orleans), thanks also to the work of producer Ted Templeman, keyboardist Bill Payne (Little Feat) who participated in the making of all the LPs up to Stampede and all 'help of guest musicians on the winds. During the recording bassist Shogren left and was replaced by Tiran Porter who contributed to a funkier sound and added his baritone voice to the rousing backing vocals of Johnston and Simmons. A second drummer, Michael Hossack, was also recruited, and the co-presence of two drummers was always a feature of the Doobies.
A string of Johnston's unforgettable songs followed: Long Train Runnin' and China Grove from the May 1973 LP The Captain and Me, an album that remains a magnificent example of energetic boogie, a cross between The Allman Brothers Band and the more lyrical Crosby & Nash and Eagles. On stage, the choral piece Without You turned into a fiery jam session lasting more than 15 minutes. With another replacement (Keith Knudsen for Hossack on drums) during recording, they released 1974's fourth LP What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits and toured with the addition of Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (ex-Steely Dan) as third guitarist. Baxter had already added his pedal steel guitar to some songs (South City Midnight Lady, Black Water and Tell Me What You Want) and was left without a job after the retirement of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker who wanted to work only in the studio for the future. In March 1975 Black Water (written by Simmons) reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, it is an interesting bluegrass-influenced number with a melodic final chorus sung a capella.During this period and for many future tours the Doobs enlisted the stage and studio presence of legendary brass group The Memphis Horns of the Stax Records label to complement the rich arrangements.
The current lineup includes: Johnston, Simmons, McDonald, McFee and session players John Cowan (bass, vocals and backing vocals), Marc Russo (sax), Marc Quiñones (percussion, backing vocals) and Ed Toth (drums, percussion). LaKind, Shogren, Bumpus, Knudsen, Hossack, Hartman and McCracken have since disappeared.
