I always wondered where the glam cowboy theme of Black Country Rock came from and why that cowboy cartoon album cover. As a young kid in the north of England I had to accompany my mother shopping in this run down fruit and vegetable market when I first saw the high kick cover of The Man Who Sold The World album stacked up on a stall between a load of potatoes and cabbages. Through all the boredom it completely grabbed me amid the awful smell of raw meat that pervaded every part of the indoor market. It was grim. There was always a woman there who wore layers of baggy jumpers and walked around making clucking noises. People spoke about her being tortured during the war. The Chicken Lady they called her. All this I was accustomed to but I remember standing transfixed and just pointing over to the Bowie LP as I asked my mother to buy it for me. It must have cost her more than she could have afforded, but she paid for it. All unlikely, and influential.

That is wonderful. Thank you.
