  • I have received lots of messages from people wanting to know how to prevent the stain from following the grain or bleeding over. I Prevent bleed-over by simply making a cut along the union with my pocket knife and then placing painters tape along the cut.

Great tip! I have been just cutting and staining separately but this is another tool I can use. Thank you so much for your inspiration for my side business. I always give you credit when asked where I got my ideas.

Great video as usual. After watching all your other videos I kind figured this one out on my own. The groove the knife makes really helps the stain from not transferring over. Keep the videos coming sir!!!

Jeff, thanks so much for all the information on making flags. When I had the idea to make a wooden flag, I found your videos and they were a huge help. I am not making them to sell, but for myself and to give away. I admire your sharing your knowledge and unselfishness in showing others how to do this.
Thank's for all the help and showing your beautiful flags, you are very talented. God Bless.

Put the tape over where the line will be. Then mark the tape and cut the tape along your straight edge. Then remove the excess. Now your have a straight line and a cut line all at once...Ta Da! Good video man... Thanks!

Working on a flag project, Googled how to prevent stain from bleeding. Came across your video which was EXACTLY the part of my project I was working on. Exactly. Cut the groove, taped and stained it, peeled the tape. Voila. Perfect. Thanks for the perfect tip.

I’ve always had good luck with taping the piece like you showed in the video and then taking a utility blade and tapping it in about 1/8-3/16 of an inch. I only usually do it on the face of the piece considering the sides of the lumber at usually butted up against one another and the back is usually up against a wall of some sort

I hammer utility knife razor blades after tracing the union edge from the template on the wood. leave them in while you stain. doing this you can do blue and red or blue white stain from both sides without tape. works like a charm.
