    That's the great thing about Romance languages. Spanish, Italian, French, and Portuguese share so many similarities when spoken that, in many cases, you can understand many phrases or complete sentences without even knowing anything about the language. 10/10

      Con el frances no es para nada facil entender. Como nativo español te puedo asegurar que el portugues (al menos el de Brasil) y el italiano son muy faciles de comprender sin conocer absolutamente nada del otro idioma. Pero el frances es otra historia. Es muy diferente desde la gramatica hasta la semantica. Hay palabras transparentes, pero no es suficiente para entender.

      @@Albarra91 It's actually much easier when the French is spoken formally without any slang. The thing is, modern French slang is basically 90% English borrowed words 😑. Since English isn't a Romance language, it doesn't translate as easily.

    Fun Fact: In linguistics, mutual intelligibility is a relationship between languages or dialects in which speakers of different but related varieties can readily understand each other without prior familiarity or special effort.
    In the case of French and Italian, the two actually do have mutual intelligibility between each other, though only moderately

    • @kwj_nekko_6320

      In most academic articles "mutually intelligible" is used in much more confined cases. Even French and Occitan (many Frenchmen still ignorantly consider 'dialects of French') are usually described "not mutually intelligible" (thus different and independent).

    • @Caoneman
      @Caoneman Месяц назад +14

      Actually ☝🤓 French and Italian aren't mutually intelligible because the understanding between the two languages is asymmetric. This means French speakers can understand Italian better than Italian speakers can understand French. French is very difficult for Italians to understand, oftentimes being completely unintelligible.
      In contrast, mutually intelligible languages like Italian and Spanish still have an asymmetry (favoring Italian in this case), but it doesn't create a significant communication barrier.

French and Romanian are much more complicated and I understand almost nothing (I guess it is the same for an Italian speaker).
    What they did is normal in Latin America, when we meet Brazilians it is normal to speak in our language and they will understand us (the same for them). There are even places where there is “Portuñol”*, which is a mixture of the two languages, the idea is that you speak in your own language and complement it with the words you know from the other language.

    Although French is often regarded as the odd child of the Latin speaking peoples, they are nearly 90% Lexically Similar to Italian. Which is more than the other Latin Languages when they are compared to Italian. Also, Iberians (Spaniards and Portuguese) and French are genetically the most closely related of all the Latin peoples. The reason why Iberians are most similar to Italians culturally is because they were the most Latinized from Roman influence.

      Keep in mind that these are true only when you define languages and peoples based on existing political borders. For example I'm sure you'll find more similarity and closer genetic ties if you compare Venetian and Florentine, or Catalan and Castillian. They're not seen as separate languages or peoples only because of how borders were drawn.

    • @ravioliformuoli39

      @@commenter4898 Florentine, Venetian, Catalan, Castilian, etc… are all considered as Regional Languages. In regard to Regional History, your point is exactly true. Especially considering that they all had their own history as formerly being separate countries. As well as their genetic influences not being exactly the same. Such as Northern Italians and Spaniards having more in common with the French, than with Southern Italians and Spaniards.
      However, when regarding the major Latin nations of today… Most Spanish and Italians consider themselves like close cousins due to being very culturally and linguistically similar. Whereas, the French are often put off to the side because they’re considered the most different. Now despite that… French is more lexically similar to Italian than Italian is with Spanish; although how French sounds like, doesn’t. Also, Spain and France as a whole share more genetic ancestry together than they do with Italy. Due to sharing Celtic, Roman, Scandinavian (Vikings), North African and Arabic (Islamic Invasions), and Gothic ancestry.
