'Like a Dragon: Ishin!' takes one of the most pivotal moments in Japanese history and infuses it with a soap-opera melodrama that only RGG can deliver. Combined with cathartic combat, a brilliant rendition of feudal Kyoto to explore and some timeless open world game design, Ishin is absolutely fantastic and a must-play.

really like that part about the open world. I love how the map in Yakuza games is always rather small, but it is filled with so much content, mystery and suprises that every little corner has something for you. It creates that super huge fun of exploring, without throwing you in a world that is way too big. For me, the Yakuza open world is one of the best out there, ever.
Lol, Yakuza games re-use the same exact kamurucho map over and over in all 7 Yakuza games.. and Judgment.... And you spend most of it running through the same areas to the same places over and over and over. Even if you only do the main quests, you will have countless fetch missions asking for e.g 5 items from 5 different convenience stores. That's not fun, you went to them all before, and now you just mindlessly run between them.
I live in Japan but entering a convenience store in a yakuza game is somehow more realistic than real life. 😂 RGG’s approach to world design reminds me of something Warren Spector once said (I’m paraphrasing here) about his dream game being just a city block. But that city block being as densely designed and accurate to real life as possible. Hence the immersive sim was born.
@@trignite it's ok if you don't like RGG games man , many people enjoy these games for the quirky stories that make us smile , laugh, cry etc. Yeah I might be just going to grab a bento for a homeless guy , but it's the story surrounding it that is engaging , not the activity itself.
I can’t stop to unnotice the cloth around the feet not touching the leg (especially while running) So PS2.
@@trignite well it's the story that surrounds it. It's no longer a shopping list that rewards me with a new flashy item, it rewards me with what I actually want: the progress of this quest.
Now see this: there's a quest which is just dialogue then fight a bunch of people, then dialogue. Sounds boring but hear this: But in this quest, you're fighting naked Men dressed in underwear, acting as babies. Now you're intrigued and want to know why it happened and want to see how it ends. That's the difference between a good and intriguing side quest design that defeats most modern AAA open world side quests. A quest's premise should pull the player in instead of the player having to force themselves to complete it.
That's what makes the Yakuza/LAD games having the best side quests in a game. Period.
dude made me read Norse mythology for god of war and now wants me to read up on Japan's history for this game.
You will not be disappointed. The Shinsengumi is an iconic group of Samurai. Basically the last samurai. Losing against the influence of foreigners, that were delivering guns to fight the emperor. Everyone of them was unique character, with his own goals and dreams.
To be fair the Norse mythology book he recommended I ended up enjoying more than God of War

So this was the first game in the series I played. I was bored with the PS4 library initially and was going through a binge of Kurosawa movies and wanted a badass samurai game. Went online, found this, decided to import it. It was an amazing game and consulting a guide to translate everything made it feel so exotic and unlike anything else I played in my life. My best friend happened to be a Yakuza nerd and told me I should check out the rest of the series. Now I've played them all, and don't plan to stop anytime soon. Thanks Ishin!
Skill Ups reviews are legit the best. 20-30 mins is the perfect amount of time to really grasp what I'm buying
Skill Up and ACG are always top-tier
I'd agree, but the Lost Judgment review was terrible. This is the same guy who said Japanese names are hard to understand in that video (Yagami, Kaito, Kuwana, Sugiura, literally just remember the last name), and also called big strong attacks "untelegraphed" when they clearly are. It was made by the same studio, and literally praised for its combat by its fans. I'm not going to say the best anymore, even if he is as good as when I was in my Warframe fan days.
@@StellaHamms Yeah, that's one review I disagree with too

May have to give this a try. When I was younger I loved Rurouni Kenshin and it got me interested in learning about this time period.
Likewise one of the reasons I was really interested in this. I love this time period of Japan.

I love the way that RGG studio writes the stories in the Yakuza games, because they never put the plot first, but instead put the characters and their own personal dramas first, which ironically enough makes you more invested in the plot because because you actually care about the characters and what happens to them. Also if you want to play another Yakuza game then I'd always recommend Zero as there's so much to love in that game.
That's just traditional story writing, prioritizing characters before the plot and having them drive the plot.
That said, too many Japanese stories do rely on not doing that.
That's something I love about them: they understand unlike a lot of writers in game development at least on the western side of the world (gee, I wonder why... *Sarcasm*), without the Characters, there IS NO story! First and foremost, those who live within a story's world are the most important part, you make the characters likeable or loveable and the antagonist either hateable to the point where you want to see them get ripped to shreds and their plans fall apart or walk that fine line that allows you to both understand why they came to the mindset that they have to be stopped but also understand that you can't allow them to continue with their plans (Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in particular alongside Persona 5 Royal's final antagonist if you go for the True Royal Ending are IMO perfect examples although the Former is a rather slow burn, but in a delightful way since once the story is at it's peak, hoo boy is it damn good!) and you have a solid foundation while making sure that those involved with seeing the story play out are invested due to caring about the characters and the outcome of it all and the impact it will have on said characters.
I’ve been binging RGG studio games and I think what I love most about their games is that they don’t try to be hyper realistic. None of the main characters have superpowers but that doesn’t stop them from having Ryoma shoot beams out of his hands. The fact that they don’t take themselves too seriously is what makes their games so charming

Pretty stoked for this. I have a long weekend and I bought the digital deluxe edition so I can play it all weekend. The 'jank' is also present in the most recent turn-based Like a Dragon game as well. I feel that the 'jankiness' fits pretty well with the slapstick side of RGG games, whether intentional or not. In the times where the game is serious, the jank isn't really there. But in side quests and whatnot, I feel that the some of the jank doesn't detract from that side of the experience.
Can you play early with the deluxe edition ?

Heck yea. This was my first Yakuza and it was great.
Wait I had no idea this released in Japan previously! When I saw the first trailer I was hooked but also I enjoy Yakuza games so this is right down my alley. Also the Shinsengumi are really interesting and has such a grip on Japanese culture. Can't wait to play!
This is a remake of the 2014 Japan release, so it's a somewhat different game and is also being re-released in Japan.

I think they're the same, tried Y0 which is supposedly the best and just couldn't get into it. Mostly gameplay wise, I just don't like the combat and movement at all. Ishin was a tiny bit better since you actually have weapons, but it had the same downsides gameplay wise
@@Walamonga1313 Huh, I personally thought Yakuza 0 was leagues better to play, the combat felt great and impactful. And there are tons are weapons in Yakuza 0, they’re just pick ups, instead of being tied to a specific fighting style.
And in Ishin, having a gun with unlimited ammo just felt cheap and wrong to me. If you’re patient enough, it seems like you can cheese most enemies by just shooting them.

Just wanted to correct one error I heard, Kyo is a rendition of modern day Kyoto. Edo at the time is modern day Tokyo and it's where Ryoma is returning to Tosa from at the beginning of the game.

Great to see fantastic reviews for this one (my favourite game series of all time) and i'm so glad this has finally left Japan and i can actually experience the game properly without having to use a guide, i really hope this sells well so we get a Kenzan remake too :)
FYI Kyo is NOT modern day Tokyo. Kyo was/is Kyoto. Tokyo at the time was called Edo, hence the Edo Period which came before the Meiji Peroid.
When Japan entered the Meiji Period or Meiji Restoration the capital was moved from Kyo (Kyoto) to Edo, which was renamed Tokyo.
Btw. Kyoto was the capital of Japan for over 1.000 years.
If you loved this game, it’s apparently the spiritual successor to a game called Like a Dragon Kenzan, that was also just a Japanese only title. Glad this one finally got localized. Would love to see Kenzan get localized too
Nah I loved it because they sort of brought back yakuza 0/kiwami combat
@Thonato it definitely feels like Yakuza 0 more than the other western released ones.

RGG confirmed that if Ishin does well they will remaster Yakuza Kenzan, a historical spin off that came before Ishin back in 2008 so yeah, fingers crossed for that to happen!
I thought I read that they’d want to do a full remake of Kenzan (as in, completely rewrite the story in some spots) as they don’t feel like it holds up that well.
Hopefully this does *really* well because I feel like it needs to for them to even think about doing it
Hell naw, they are probably going to change the story and I personally don't want that. I'd much rather have KHHSubs finally finish the english patch instead.

Having started playing this last night everything about it just works. I loved Yakuza 8 (the turn based one) and the Judgment spin-offs but the rest while enjoyable never really captivated me due to the combat systems and convoluted, overly long stories. Ishin! However has fantastic combat, it’s varied and fun and surprisingly complex. It’s definitely my second favourite now after 8
18:00 Interestingly, the Eejanaika phenomenon was an actual thing that happened all over Japan during the end of the Edo era, no wonder you found it catchy ;)
And iirc (I may be wrong, it's been a few years since I played this) this was the first RGG game that incorporated different fighting styles and gave them their own skill tree. They then refined the system and included it in Yakuza 0, and all following installments (except Yakuza 7 obv) up to Lost Judgement. This may have been a spin-off but it was a great way for the dev team to test out a new system, and had much further influence than one might expect.
Yep u got it right
I liked the review but ngl this part at 11:45 is actually hilarious. The switch from the fluid LJ gameplay to you just repeatedly shooting an enemy on the ground just goes to show that you just have prejuduce against LJ.

Giving me some Shenmue vibes, with the open world approach. Discovering places and details on that game was such a joy.
Same, both this and Lost judgement have extreme Shenmue vibes. Both top of my list for when I get the ps5.
Im pretty sure the first yakuza was the way it was Becouse of shenmue
The same guy came up with both series
Well yeah, Yakuza and this Game exist because of Shenmue.
*cough* uhh... the Yakuza series pretty much continued where Shenmue left off with the formula it designed. IIRC, a key reason why Shenmue 3 didn't do as well as one would think is because the developers of that game didn't constantly grow as developers, they didn't make all that many games, and wound up pretty much picking up not only in story but in the GAMEPLAY department despite it having been quite some time, at least over one decade, where 2 left off which is... quite honestly, not a good thing as while I love MANY things about the late 90s and first half of the 00s due to BS being at a minimum and games not being gutted cause shareholders and executives want more money while not having any knowledge of games or even play or like them to begin with, there were indeed... growing pains in that era sadly enough. the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series on the other hand and their developers at RGG Studio (basically their name is Like A Dragon in Japanese) have been making game, after game, and even found ways to reuse assets... but in a way that makes perfect sense as they have the talent, something one cannot fake or replicate, to know when to reuse said assets to work smarter, not harder and cut down on dev time and costs while allowing for more stuff to be made. Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami 1 being perfect examples of such, right down to Kiwami 1 having refined 0s battle system... although it'd be nice if they brought it back and refined it even more with the Styles IMO. My point is, the Shenmue devs didn't learn the lessons and skills they needed as they didn't do much work hence why Shenmue 3 seems TMI a bit... dated... in a bad way mind while RGG Studios make sure to get the practice, lessons and the like in. I mean for eff's sake, THEY MADE A DAMN GOOD JRPG IN YAKUZA 7: LIKE A DRAGON ON THEIR FIRST ATTEMPT AT THE GENRE! That is not an easy feat to pull off, I am sure!
sad to hear that your experience with lost judgment didn't stick, I personally loved it. I really feel like I'm exploring a place instead of being in a theme park where the only option is the roller-coaster ride that takes me from point A to point B
Watch Shura No Toki, it’s a period time anime that takes place through japans history and the final arc take place during this timeline and gives you background you need to be invested
I’m sure there are more out there this is just the one that I liked the most
A couple of things:
* The game takes place in a rendition of Kyoto, not Tokyo.
* Eejanaika was a real movement that was essentially a reaction to feelings of powerlessness and apathy around the social and political circumstances of the Bakumatsu period.
Man I have always wanted to love Yakuza games. Shenmue blew my tiny child mind back in the day, and for decades I’ve wanted to love them, but it’s just never clicked.
The real time combat bored me in the mainline games, and I’ve tried to start like a dragon several times, and never made it past the first few hours.
That being said, obv gonna give this a go haha
I'm gonna get this day one. Thank you Skill Up and Austin😁
Gimme a hell yea!
@@dr.loomis4221 HELL YEAH
I'm so happy you and RGG reached an understanding!
I'm increasingly excited for this to come out. I tried the combat demo on my Steam Deck and it kept a solid 60fps on medium with FSR enabled, it could probably even do High if I'm not concerned about battery.
I'd love to hear you get more into the rest of the series, but I'm not sure it would benefit you at this point. The big entry points have been 0, 7, and Judgment, and there's not much use in releasing reviews for those at this point. And it seems like their only realtime brawlers moving forward will be Judgment and surprise remakes like this. I'm also not as keen on the new writers so far, Ishin is from their golden period.
Good news is there's another Like A Dragon game similar to this one. It's called Kenzan! and it was the first Ryu Ga Gotoku game for the PS3 and I was slightly disappointed this one got slightly remade and ported first. Oh well, here's hoping it does eventually if this one does well. There's also a PSP spinoff duology which I'd really like to see ported someday.
My only real problem with your review, is that you embraced the goofiness of Inshin, but took elements of Lost Judgement too seriously.
It's really funny to see all these character models that we know from previous Yakuza games but all here in the same one is really nice for enjoyers of that license. Like a multiverse of awesomeness
And they act in a similar way as Light Motifs. You see Majima and know "Oh they're going to be the crazy psycho character". It's a nice short hand for previous players to kind of get a feel for what they're getting into because they already have basic understanding of the characters.
Thanks man, you guys produce some of the best gaming content around, always concise and... usually well-articulated.
I look forward to trying this out. Back on the PS3 I bought and played the Yakuza "Ryū ga Gotoku Kenzan!" Barely read any Japanese at the time but loved the Vagabond manga and Samurai trilogy I had to play it. So far its the only Yakuza game I've ever played.
I thought that it was Sekiro when I saw a samurai with a gun and the name Ishin.
Funnily enough, if you are a fan of Gintama, you would have a good sense of the story and characters as that manga has lots of characters and historical influence from this period
I sincerely hope you review Atomic Heart, really want to hear your opinion on this one as it really seems hit or miss
Same
This has been a very busy week for skillup
Thankyou again for the content
I am so excited for ridiculous shenanigans
Same!
Yakuza games have been the kings of open worlds since 2005, it's just that people don't know it, they are hidden kings
How’s the combat? Is it skill based at all like Sekiro or is it purely based off how strong your char is?
Bro you are playing a yakuza game
@@aFragDowN i dont play these games, and its because they’re combat looks bad. Like a bad Arkham clome, instead of trying to make the combat more like Nioh or Sekiro which would be better imo
@@n8doggy733 'arkham clone' , Yakuza games exist since the 90s
@@aFragDowN oh , well then Arkham copied them 😂
Skill-up seal of approval is a major factor in all my game decisions NODDERS 👍
Hogwarts legacy review?
scared
@@THEMODAL lol that why he is also called shill up🤣😂
he said he didn't get a code to review it early and once it released he was too busy with other things.
I've been watching your channel for a long time and I didn't realize I wasn't subscribed. This video earned you a subscriber. Welcome to the club. RGG rules.
@Skill Up,. why aren't you reviewing Hogwarts Legacy?
He is afraid of the Twitter crowd.
@@fernandofaria2872 If that is the case that I'm not watching his content anymore. Anyone who bows down to lunatics doesn't deserve my time.
@@FrankAndreasLia Well, to be fair, what he _did_ say is that WB didn't give him a code. But thats obviously a dumb excuse. If you've been to his Twitter then you know he is another leftist loony, like YongYea, Alanah Pearce, etc.
@@fernandofaria2872 I try to actively avoid Twitter since it's usually echo chamber of leftist circle jerking each other and it's toxic. I don't mind someone's political leanings if they don't actively shove it in my face or put it in their entertainment. If as you say that YongYea is leftist, I don't feel it watching his YT-channel at least. He is also not a game reviewer, he does it once it a while unlike Skill Up which is a game reviewer. To make the decision to not review a game as a game reviewer, because of crazy zealot lunatics on Twitter you loose all my respect. JK isn't even transphobe, she is even a hardcore leftist her self, but she believes in biology so that makes her somehow equivalent to the "Fuhrer" to these people...?? It is just beyond stupid and anyone with a modicum of common sense agrees with that sentiment.
@@FrankAndreasLia I agree with you.
Combat in this seems like a welcome breath of fresh air after so many souls games where combat is all about precision, countering and dodging.
Also a new Tenchu game would be most welcome.
I see the name Ishin and see a glock. I'm intrigued
Well to be fair in the time period this game is set, firewarms were WAY more common, only the Samurai that were still stuck in the old ways didn't use them. That is not the case for our main character Sakamoto Ryōma
@@Ashurman666 u do realize he's referencing sekiro right?
Watch Rurouni Kenshin for some more of this era of history (fictional aspects as they may be). The live action films are also pretty decent.
You've redeemed yourself after that Lost Judgment review.
It looks just like a game I played back in the day, although more slow-paced. It was called Way of the Samurai, and even though I played them all, I think 2 was my favorite. Just watching this and seeing that it looks like a faster-paced version of The Way of the Samurai makes me want to try it. I never got into the Yakuza game franchise, but I wanted to. I just found it too comical to play for what I know of the True Yakuza, but another reason I wanted another way of the Samurai. is because I got a lot of joy out of taking on the role of the ancient samurai. Who actually acted like how a samurai should act? My best bet may be to go with what is probably the successor of Way of the Samurai, which would be Ghost of Tsushima.
You should absolutely play the game Pizza Tower. It’s a really odd looking Indie platformer in a newgrounds kinda way, but it is genuinely interesting the most simple fun I have had with a game in a very long time!
Totally forgot about this game. I didn't realize it was coming out so soon. I tend to not finish these games, but maybe this will be the first. Thanks for the unexpected review!
There’s a Podcast by Isaac Meyer named History of Japan and he has a 20 part series on the “Fall of the Samurai” which goes into great detail on this time period. Check it out!
Judging by all your good arguments about the game, it's safe to say that Ralph just discovered the RGG formula. I'm not being ironic, all that sentiment that you put into this ishin review was exactly how I felt when playing Yakuza Kiwami for the first time.
Im so happy we're finally getting this game. I really hope we get Kenzan localized and remade at some point too.
RGG games are some of my most favourites. Can't wait to get my hands on Ishin
I'm more ready for Ichiban next year.
Your review of yakuza like a dragon convinced me to buy it having never played a yakuza game. I absolutely loved it and went on to purchase and play every other yakuza game as well as the judgment series and they became very special games to me. Glad to hear you enjoyed this one too and am looking forward to it myself!
Man I've been on a Samurai movie binge on the last few weeks. I've been eyeing this game for a while as a Bakumatsu setting was very interesting but these beat em ups really do not appeal to me at all. There was another game centered around the Bakumatsu that I forgot the name of that was supposed to be releasing around the same time but the gameplay of that one seemed outrageous to me as well lmao. I might wait for more reviews but I really want to try Ishin out.
I doubt anyone will see this but it runs perfectly on Steam Deck.
I'll admit, this wasn't on my radar until I watched this. Thanks Skill Up 👍
I'm not going to watch this review as I've already ordered the game ages ago , I'm just going to like the video and play it on mute in the background as I dont want to spoil a single minute for myself but I am really glad you enjoyed this and can recomend it to other people who are unfamiliar with RGG studio games
Got 8 hours in and I just started Ch 4. Loving it so far!
Im... 32 hours in and still at chapter 4.... side stuff got me hooked
@@DekaMan I wanted to finish chapter 4 so I can finally change my outfits. I had bought the deluxe edition so I wanted to rock out my shit. I’m not 23 hrs in and I just started Ch 6
Playing this game really makes me wanna replay yakuza 0. I have been playing every Yakuza game starting from 0 to LAD, to then judgement (which is so baaad btw) in just 4 months! Then this baby comes out and i immediately quit judgment, uninstalled and never gonna touch that garbo again.
I want more spin offs with the cast in this game, I love every 1 of them.
Damn you, Skill up, for using that stock picture in the beginning... I'm on the train using my big ass laptop and everyone looked at me funny
I love that you compare this to the golden three open world games. Outer wilds, BOTW, and elden ring. Gets me so exited to try this
Red dead 2 is 10x better than Zelda’s open world
You picked three of the most boring open world games my dude
I imported and played this game 100% back in 2015, so I'm very hesitant in giving this game another play. I can read Japanese so this game stands as my 2nd favorite Yakuza game ever made. I'll probably pick it up on a sale. Great review as always!
I became familiar with the Meiji Era in Japan from my love of the Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story manga. This game sound like something I'd really enjoy and I'm looking forward to it.
I shouldn't be, but I'm impressed SEGA sent him a review code *after* he panned a game from the same franchise... It's sad that most AAA studios/publishers probably wouldn't nowadays...
13:44 Seated right there next to Carnage is none other than Nyanners herself. You have to love the insanity that is the Yakuza series.
Each time i remember the Judgment games i have to actually stop and wonder how RGG fans like them as much as the mainline games. They had none of the interesting story beats or characters, the tone was all over and Yagami paled in comparison to any other mainline protagonist. I played Judgment fresh out of a Y0 rerun and it was a night and day difference between story and characters.
I really just can't wrap my head around it. All the mainline games have so many memorable characters and stories but for the Judgment games all i remember was Yagami being a moralising headass and the apparent 'master manipulator' villain from the Kaito DLC being comically, unbelievably, laughably evil in the final showdown.
Then we get games like this and every character, every moment of the story just oozes intrigue. I do not understand how they can be compared and enjoyed in equal measure
Man please look into bleak faith forsaken, it releases in 3 weeks. Its a passion project of only 3 developers, the release trailer looks awesome. Its like dark souls cyberpunk ish, Bekzinski dark as fuck. It would be great if as much people as possible see it. Maybe include it in your this week in video games. Honestly you would do something incredible for the developers. Keep up the good work :)
There is a fast travel. Just ride the Palanquin. :D
