I always said we live in a social ladder. People will go against they're beliefs to be accepted. Or they will follow the norm or narrative to be included. Conviction vs preference! People say one thing then feeling threatened in some way quickly turn so called conviction to preference. People also tend to follow the sheep. Society will punish you in you don't conform!

Thanks Kenny, deeper dive into this please, I think I smelled a little smoke, and where there's smoke...for me this seems to relate with Melanie Klien's work with children and the stages of development (paranoid/schizoid, depressive etc.) that she identified. I wonder how someone in each of the stages you listed would perceive their own ability to understand and identify their own values and moral judgements about them, and how this relates to "needs" and "wants".
