      I have a fitness program I’ve been giving to friends for free since 2006. One of my friends suggested I present it via RUclips video series. I figure a next step up would be an app. If I can develop it myself, at least sell it to those who have promised to try it. Then it’ll be a marginal success. Whenever someone asks, how do I get and like that? I’ll point them to the app.

      Everyone knows McDonald's. Garbage product. But it doesn't matter because of mass sales
      I think itd be the same with an app.

    I think firstly you have to figure out what you love doing. If you love making money the most then developing apps is not the (only) answer. If you love making awesome apps by yourself, you need to learn other skills like marketing to earn money from doing what you love. Or, you might cooperate with your friend who can do marketing.
    You can be an app millionaire or not but it doesn’t matter. You’ll able to earn enough for living in this industry if you’re really serious

    I'm building my first app and hoping that it will work out ok. It is not something for the general public, instead it is geared towards a specific niche market in which I used to work. If it doesn't sell it is not going to break the bank for me but of course it would be nice if it does well.

  • @w0mblemania
    @w0mblemania 2 года назад +4

    I completely agree.
    It's not enough to code and design. It's not even enough to ship a great app.
    Don't fool yourself that if you build a great app, people will flock to it.
    You're not going to get some huge viral hit based on the intrinsic wonderfulness of your app and word-of-mouth sales. The app store doesn't work that way anymore.
    All those "indie hits" you hear about? They almost always have great marketing and/or social-media connections, usually through major influencers.
    So, you need MARKETING.
    If marketing isn't a CORE part of your app release strategy, then, frankly, you don't have a viable app strategy.
    p.s. I hate marketing, but I had to learn to get over myself, and treat app development as a business instead of a purely creative exercise.

    Great honest video, I published my first paid app just over a month ago. It took me 3 months to make and Ive spent around 80 nzd on marketing it. So far sitting at 55 downloads and $92 nzd revenue. I'm happy with that but for the time and money put in it's a massively low return :( I figure as long as I'm enjoying the development process, it's fine but for anyone thinking it's a get rich scheme it's definitely not.

    • @CodeWithChris
      @CodeWithChris  5 лет назад +6

      So I made the math.... (well, thanks Google!). 80 nzd is $50US.
      Well, the most important part is that you made a return in investment but the biggest return is also what you have learned because this can be priceless to an employer in the future who needs help to build his dream!
      I know only less than 1% of apps make it to the front page (like Flappy Birds and such!).
      Still believe in what you do and code with passion!
      PS: I made $0 on my app! Oh wait.. free and no ads... that's maybe why!

      If making money is what you are after, app development isn't it unless you work for a company. The vast majority if apps will not make a dime. One big reason why is because people think apps are cheap to make, so they value them at $0. Honestly if I knew it was this hard to make money out of, I wouldn't learn it. Not worth it.

    I don't see too much overhead on having the marketing part down. You dont need to be a "marketing master", just segmentate your target correctly when paying for Google Ads: you don't need to be too clever either to know which is your target. If you dont get downloads is because Google Ads system is bad at its own job and not showing the add to the relevant target (or the content of the add is not engaging enough to trigger the download). Am I missing something?

Don't worry though as even just simple apps can earn a lot its just a matter of finding your "niche", it doesn't even have to be in-app purchases as ads can be plenty if it gets popular enough. I'm very familiar with software development, just not phone apps and need to learn another programming language. Not a big deal.
    I have a need for an app myself, so thats motivation enough. I will probably spend a lot of time tweaking it and adding features till is is perfect for me. At that point some folks around me should be using it too. Then it could go to the apps store. Any money it makes would be nice, but not required. I'd be sad if it makes less than the costs of setting it up.

    • @CodeWithChris

      Initial investment, without counting your own time and work would be $99/year.
